Here is a page with thesis templates for LyX
https://wiki.lyx.org/Examples/Thesis

If your university has a latex template, you can usually adapt that to LyX with
some combination of using the Document->Settings->Preamble and the LyX layout
file.

This is an unfortunately known bug under Ventura.

There is a thread on it starting here
http://lists.lyx.org/pipermail/lyx-users/2023-January/004830.html

which includes some tips on copying and pasting the full path and file name
using right-click and option key in the finder
http://lists.lyx.org/pipermail/lyx-users/2023-January/004871.html

I am not sure if the developers have a fix in the works.

Best of luck,

No idea. I have been using an automator script for this for the last 5 years or
so. (Highly doubt it was there from OS X day one.)
In general if one “copies” or “drags" a file from Finder into a text based
application (eg Terminal) you get the path and file name. Even works using the
little icon in title bar of most apps (eg Preview). This has worked for on the
order of 10 years.

For those of you facing this issue, here are two other ways to copy the full
path and file name, which I think are fewer mouse clicks than opening the Get
Info..

1) In the Finder, right click on the file to bring up the contextual menu. Then
press the option key. You will then see Copy “my file.pdf” change to Copy “my
file.pdf” as Pathname. Paste into LyX Insert Graphics file field. Includes full
path and file name.

2) Make an Automator script for the above, so it shows up in the “Services”
contextual menu. Described here for an earlier version of MacOS
https://automationpanda.com/2017/09/07/copying-file-paths-from-finder-in-macos/

Then you can just right click and select your automation script without the
need to press the option key.

(I am not on Ventura yet, so I am assuming these still work in Ventura).

Yes, you can fully customize the toolbars
https://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/UserInterface

It’s been a long time since I have done it, but I recall it was just editing
some text files.
I have even made my own toolbar icons for functions that I use a lot, but that
were not included in the default set.

If your operating system is able to search on content (ie spotlight on MacOS),
the following once worked for me to locate the personal dictionary...
1) add an intentionally misspelled to your personal dictionary via LyX
2) update content search database
3) search for mis-spelled word

Thanks for the help. I will create an MWE and post here in the next few days. I
also plan to look in the temp directory and see what the actual png files that
LyX is creating to do the on screen preview look like.

Graphics clipping in LyX 2.3.6

2022-01-12 Thread Stephen Buonopane via lyx-users
Ever since I upgraded to LyX 2.3.6.2 (on Mac OS X 10.15.7) I have been having
issues when I use “clip to coordinates” in the LyX: Graphics window.
The bounding box of the on-screen LyX preview is different than the pdf output
(using pdflatex). This worked fine when I was in LyX 2.3.5.2

I am using an external pdf file which gets converted to on-screen PNG with the
following command in the converters for PDF (graphics) -> PNG
sips --resampleWidth 600 --setProperty format png $$i --out $$o

Below are two snippets from the Code Preview Pane for the exact same LyX file
opened in each version. The same clipping coordinates are being converted to
different values of the viewport parameter by the two different versions of LyX

LyX 2.3.6.2 Does NOT output correct pdf file
\begin{enumerate*}
\item \textbf{Shear and Moment Diagrams}\\
For the simply-supported beam shown below: \\
\includegraphics[viewport=0bp 340bp 200bp 440bp,clip]{images/hw1_2022}
\end{enumerate*}

LyX 2.3.5.2 DOES output correct pdf file
\begin{enumerate*}
\item \textbf{Shear and Moment Diagrams}\\
For the simply-supported beam shown below: \\
\includegraphics[viewport=0bp 316.965bp 186.bp
410.19bp,clip]{images/hw1_2022}
\end{enumerate*}

I looked at the release notes for 2.3.6 and the only possibly related item I
could find was
"- Fix clipping of vector images and when exporting from command line
(follow-up to bug 11180).”
but I could not find bug 11180 in the bug tracker, so not sure if this is
related.

Any ideas?
For now I will revert to LyX 2.3.5.2.

Thanks,
Steve

Yes LyX creates a PNG file for the on-screen preview within LyX (It also does
this for the math preview)
If you dig into the LyX temp directory you will find all of the PNG files.

I recall that an older version of LyX (on Mac) did not use PNG for on-screen
previews, in which case it may be possible to revert to the older behavior even
in 2.3.X?

I believe that you will need to use commands from the titlesec package in ERT
and/or the preamble.
I don’t think there is anyway to do it directly with LyX commands or menus.

Re: Templates on Mac OS X

2014-07-16 Thread Stephen Buonopane
On the Mac installation, they get buried inside of the app package.

Find LyX.app in your applications folder
Right click on it and select show package contents
Then go to Contents - Resources - templates

On my installation of LyX,
File - New from Template goes to /Library/ApplicationSupport/LyX/templates
so that may be a more convenient place for the templates to be placed.

Is anybody aware that templates are not installed when installing Lyx on OS

should run some configuration tool after installation, but this tool is
nowhere to be found in Lyx 2.1.1.

In LyX you can do this with Insert - File - External Material - PDFPages

 Hello!

Unfortunately are both ways wrong on my system. Wenn I try the way of Les,
there is no Graphic seen on the PDF, wenn I try the way of Stephen, the Latex

But still I´ve found the GOLDEN WAY, with the tip of Stephen.
Note, that you seems to me like Latex - profis, and I´m a Latex- donkey, I´m
a Lyx- user! And now I´tell you the way for simple lyx users.

This way has a plus and a minus:

+ you don´t need to touch the Latex - priamble, you don´t need Texcode!
 - you have to produce your Graphic as PDF

So, Stephens way ist easyer in Lyx. First you change your graphic in a PDF -
Dokument (it´s easy to export it as PDF from GIMP)

Than you go in your LYX - Dokument on the Side, where you want the Graphic,
may be make an new page and if you want to see the Graphic without topline
and pagenumber, set this in Texcode:

 \thispagestyle{empty}

This is to clean your page, not the command to insert graphic!

And now you insert your graphic:

 - click on: insert - file - extern Material (!)
at the opening window search four your pdf- pic, and insert it
 - under that field you can choose the type of dokument - choose pdf
 - overtake this,

and on the other upper button large and turning click:

 - wide 100 % large

(may be here you can play a little bit with this options, but this works
striktly. And may be, there are some little other names for this options,
cause I use the german surface)

Now I see on Lyx and on my PDF a large Graphic over the entire of the choosen
page - in a realy good quality (zoom it!)

I hope other people can enjoy this simple way now too
and maybe it will be discribed in the Handbooks.

Thank you Les, inadvertently I print out your picture. So I pin it on my wall

Try the solution given here…

It solved a related problem for me in the past where the conversion through eps
subtly changed the graphics dimensions making on screen cropping near
impossible.

2013-12-03 Thread Stephen Buonopane
Try the solution given here…
http://michael.orlitzky.com/articles/fixing_pdf_graphics_in_lyx.php
which creates a direct conversion from pdf to png.

It solved a related problem for me in the past where the conversion through eps
subtly changed the graphics dimensions making on screen cropping near
impossible.

On the Mac installation, they get buried inside of the app package.

Find LyX.app in your applications folder

It might be a good idea to copy the folder to somewhere more convenient outside

I believe LyX just adopts the LaTeX default.

Put the floats where you want them to appear relative to the text, then right
click on the float:Figure or float:Table box and select Settings...Here
Definitely.
Or with the cursor in the float frame select Edit..Float Settings.

pdf cropping

2012-09-19 Thread Stephen Buonopane
I have a pdf file that has /MediaBox [0 0 630 376]
when I ask LyX to get the bounding box from the file it returns [0 0 611 376]
which means the right edge of the image is cut off in both the LyX preview and
the pdf output, unless I change the 611 to 630.

I searched the pdf file in a text editor and cannot find 611 anywhere.
Anyone know where LyX gets the bounding box values from?

Thanks

I have not used it recently, but I get the same error you do.
I copied it from Herbert Voss' tips and tricks page many years ago.
It worked then, but I am not sure what has changed.

Actually…it looks like the /singlespacing command is causing the problem.
Delete that and the centering still works.

I can confirm same behavior on Mac OS X 10.7.4, LyX 2.0.4.
It is possible to dock the window in the main LyX window, so there must be a

Not sure if the can be done from BiBDesk or even LyX Gui,

Try the titlesec package.

You won't see the formatting on the LyX screen but the pdf output will

Are you using \includegraphics in a TeX Code box?
Or through the insert graphics LyX interface?

The former will cause problems because of the way LyX does the Tex
compile in a temporary directory, which is not where your relative
path is pointing.
If you use the LyX interface, it resolves all of the paths before
passing it off to the latex command.

I have the same issue with the \includepdf command and have just
learned to use full path strings.

(Yes I know there is now a LyX dialog for this command)
Or I think you can define a default pathname in the preamble, but it
is kind of messy.

I am a bit puzzled why the behavior switched between 2.0.0 and 2.0.1?
But maybe someone on the dev team can help.

In my lyx document I wish to put the figure approximatively where
they should be in the final document. However, I wish, in a draft
version, to have all the figures coming at the end of the document.
Is there an option to do so ?

Try the endfloat package. In the preamble put
\usepackage{endfloat}

Or if you do not have a lot of figures you could manually select the
float setting and change to Here definitely

Oh, I should have mentioned that I've tried:

pdflatex
ps2pdf
DVI
dvipdfm

So it's something that is either a problem introduced by an update of
Mac OS, or it's an Acrobat problem.

Have you tried reducing the page size with the scale command
for example
\includepdf[pages={-},scale=0.85]{myfile.pdf}

Any thoughts? Could there be some kind of preview still attached?

A few things to try...
1. If you are using pdflatex in LyX, then save the files from Adobe as
pdf instead of eps. I think this will avoid the preview issue
altogether.

2. In Adobe use Print to PDF or Print to Postscript instead of Save As.
3. From the terminal, try eps2eps or ps2ps on your file. This may
strip the preview.

Insert your float and table
