Fwd: I don't understand this
Thanks Daniel, this was very helpful. I suppose that if I took the time to slog through the LaTeX manual, the explanation would be in it somewhere. Now suppose I want the set whose members are all countable subsets of the real numbers. This is typically denoted as R_\aleph_0 (where by "R" I don't mean the ordinary letter capital R, I mean the symbol $\mathbb{R}$ that is used to denote the set of real numbers, which I can get in math mode from the "del" (inverted triangle) menu. In other words, it's "R" with subscript "aleph null". Here's the part I don't understand. If I put in the "R" followed by _\aleph_0, the R and the aleph show up correctly, but the zero (the subscript of the aleph) shows up as a different character (I think it's the character that's used in formal logic to mean something like "is not a proof of"). Could someone please explain to me what is going on here? I can't make any sense out of it. I do not know why it is showing different symbols. But the solution is to enter the \aleph_0 *outside* of the \mathbb. This is not LyX specific but the case in LaTeX in general. Do do so in LyX you need to first step out of the \mathbb inset (indicated by two pink corners). For example: 1. Write your R so that it shows as desired as symbol for the real numbers (you are now inside the \mathbb inset) 2. Press the right arrow key (to move out of the \mathbb inset) 3. Type \aleph_0 I hope this helps! Daniel -- lyx-users mailing list lyx-users@lists.lyx.org http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users

Re: LyX for Mac
I don't know how to adjust the cursor blink rate in Apple Mail, Thunderbird, Safari, etc. (if anyone does, please tell me!) but since I'm not spending a lot of time typing text into a window when I use a web browser, it isn't that much of an issue. When composing email, I usually type my text into an emacs buffer (which does allow me to turn off the blink) and then paste it into the mail client. In Windows you can turn off the blink via Control Panel -> Keyboard Properties. Regarding the blinking cursor… it is quite common to have a blinking cursor. I agree it might be desirable to adjust the frequency or turn it off - but at a system wide level. I don’t know of a setting to read this parameter from. How do you adjust the cursor in Apple Mail or Safari? How do you adjust it with the Windows version? Not sure what the problems are there but, for the record, I use the LyX 2.3.6.2 binaries from lyx.org on both my MacBook Pro (M1 chip) and a Windows laptop and the functionality is pretty much identical. It does appear that you are stuck with a blinking cursor (since that’s an OS level thing), but I have no problem changing the background color (did you uncheck “Use system colors”?), and cursor movement keys and other shortcuts work identically in both versions. (Maybe you mean something more by “hotkeys”?) I doubt another MacOS binary would solve your problem but one thing you could try is to install Parallels or VMWare Fusion and run Linux in a VM. I installed the ARM version of Ubuntu on my MBP (kind of for kicks) and compiled LyX 2.3.6.2 on it and found that it is actually significantly faster than the MacOS version (presumably because the latter is not compiled for Apple Silicon and hence uses Rosetta 2). Chris Menzel Yes, I meant keyboard shortcuts. E.g. to bring up the "Insert" menu, alt-i just inserts an unwanted character into the text. How do I uncheck "Use system colors"? Is that somewhere in System Preferences? -- lyx-users mailing list lyx-users@lists.lyx.org http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users

question about "itemize"
Suppose I have an itemized list like paragraph 1 - paragraph 2 paragraph 3 where paragraph 2 is nested. If I enter this by choosing the "itemize" environment, then typing paragraph 1 paragraph 2 paragraph 3 LyX creates paragraph 3 as a new item. Is there a way to have paragraph 3 not be a new item? For example, if I enter paragraph 3 in the "Quote" environment, it will look like I want it to on the left (i.e. it will have the same indentation as paragraph 1 without the large dot that indicates a new item) but if it's a long paragraph it will also be indented on the right, which I don't want. In other words, I would like it to have the same indentation (both right and left) as if paragraph 3 were a new item, but without the dot preceding paragraph 3. Hope this makes sense. -- lyx-users mailing list lyx-users@lists.lyx.org http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users
