You will find the 64 bit version at: at http://www.getdeb.net/release/3592.

It seems that they have only the 386 version. Since I am running a 64
bit Kubuntu (8.10), can I still use it?

Well - it is not only 94 bit -
It is also Hardy (8.04) for which only 1.6.0 rc3 is available (And I
would prefer not to compile from source).

Is there a chance to build the binaries for all the most recent Ubuntu
releases and possibly even create a repository for those which could
be added in apt? That would really be brilliant and make it much
easier for normal users to use the newest versions of LyX.

AFAIK Ubuntu provides a backport repository for some of the older
releases. That would be the place where you should ask about adding
the recent LyX releases.

Beside that there shouldn't be any technical problems with recompiling
the source package on older Ubuntu releases.

Maybe one should note that the latest math manual requires a TeX styles
that is not part of Debian and so I would guess it's also not part
of Ubuntu. That's not a major showstopper for most people but might be
against some kind of backporting policy.

That is true - but only packages which are in the newer versions of

Bad idea. That's a TeX issue und should be managed with the TeX people.

Ideally those missing styles should be distributed with texlive but some

Well - it is not only 94 bit -
It is also Hardy (8.04) for which only 1.6.0 rc3 is available (And I
would prefer not to compile from source).

Is there a chance to build the binaries for all the most recent Ubuntu
releases and possibly even create a repository for those which could
be added in apt? That would really be brilliant and make it much
easier for normal users to use the newest versions of LyX.
