Actually, I just checked, and it seems that UTF8 encoding is automatically
selected when you choose XeTeX as a backend.
So my diagnosis was wrong. I would try this to try to determine if the
error comes from LyX or from your LaTeX installation.
Could you send me the tex file that the LyX command FileExport
Latex(XeTeX) produces?
I'll compare it with what I get here and try to find out if there is a
LyX-related difference.

It seems to me you are not use the utf8 encoding (which you should, with
Xetex). Try compiling the file I sent you and let me know what happens.




Actually, I just checked, and it seems that UTF8 encoding is automatically
selected when you choose XeTeX as a backend.
So my diagnosis was wrong. I would try this to try to determine if the
error comes from LyX or from your LaTeX installation.
Could you send me the tex file that the LyX command File>>Export
Latex(XeTeX) produces?

I tried compiling Lyx's help file on lilypond with xetex and libertine

it works fine. I even scattered a few umlaute at random with no
problems.
So it looks like there are no issues preventing lilypond to work with

font. Which system are you on (Mac/Linux (if so which distro)?Windows)?

It seems to work fine with Libertine and XeTeX (see enclosed pdf) . I don't
have Tex Gyre Bonum installed, so I could not try it with that font. But I
would expect errors similar to what you got if I try compilation with an
uninstalled font.

So the question is: Are you sure you have TeX Gyre Bonum installed? Can you
try to open another application (e.g. Libreoffice or Microsoft Word) and
check whether you can select if as a font? If not, then you have to install
those fonts for your platform (instructions will vary from platform to
platfor and even from distro to distro, for Unix).

In Debian the way that I Installed Libertine fonts and others, this way:

Downloaded the fonts from here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/linuxlibertine/files/linuxlibertine/5.3.0/

I have a directory in: /usr/share/fonts as my-fonts, but you don't
need your own directory, It's just that I use a lot of fonts.

Put the unzipped [if they are zipped] somewhere in /usr/share/fonts

Then as root: fc-cache

or, if that doesn't work as root: fc-cache -fv

You may have to close down and start LyX again, but those fonts should
be seen in every word processor, text editor and LyX of course.

These are the same error messages I got when I tried the TexGyreBonum 
fonts.
Stefano, could you kindly send me your lyx-file, you used to produce the 
pdf lilypond output or tell me,
what your document settings Latex preamble looks like? Apparently I 
miss something there; in fact, my is empty

I tried the file you sent and it shows the same error I had reported.
Were is utf8 encoding set in LyX? Could not find it in the diverse help files;
in the User's Guide it says, Lyx is always UTF8 encoded.

would expect errors similar to what you got if I try compilation with an
uninstalled font.

So the question is: Are you sure you have TeX Gyre Bonum installed? Can you
try to open another application (e.g. Libreoffice or Microsoft Word) and
check whether you can select if as a font? If not, then you have to install
those fonts for your platform (instructions will vary from platform to
platfor and even from distro to distro, for Unix).

In Debian the way that I Installed Libertine fonts and others, this way:

Downloaded the fonts from here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/linuxlibertine/files/linuxlibertine/5.3.0/

I have a directory in: /usr/share/fonts as my-fonts, but you don't
need your own directory, It's just that I use a lot of fonts.

Put the unzipped [if they are zipped] somewhere in /usr/share/fonts

Then as root: fc-cache

or, if that doesn't work as root: fc-cache -fv

You may have to close down and start LyX again, but those fonts should
be seen in every word processor, text editor and LyX of course.

It seems to me you are not use the utf8 encoding (which you should, with
Xetex). Try compiling the file I sent you and let me know what happens.

I tried the file you sent and it shows the same error I had reported.
Were is utf8 encoding set in LyX? Could not find it in the diverse help files;
in the User's Guide it says, Lyx is always UTF8 encoded.

situation is now worse than before and I do not know why.

could you send a minimal example showing your problem?

I tried compiling Lyx's help file on lilypond with xetex and libertine and
it works fine. I even scattered a few umlaute at random with no problems.
So it looks like there are no issues preventing lilypond to work with
either system fonts and xetex.

This error message actually shows that either you do not have lilypond
installed on your system (I just ran into the same problem a few minutes
ago, solved with Vincent's help), or you have it isntalled, but somehow LyX
cannto find it.
So, first make sure that lilypond is actually availaible: try typing
lilypond or lilipond-book at a promp. If nothing happens, reinstall
lilypond
Then, reconfigure LyX, quit, restart LyX, and try opening the lilypond help
manual again. The error should be gone.

used jedit for it.

However, inserting the text in the ERT of my lilypond lyx file did not help:
The Umlaute (diacritics) e.g. ü = ue are not shown in the pdf output; 
instead the vowel is not shown at all, no space:

Hügel (Huegel) is shown as Hgel.

Another method recommended is to cut the UTF8 coded Umlaut and paste it 
in the text. That did not help either (same as above).

Wolfgang, are you sure you are using a font that in fact includes the
proper glyph for the UTF8-addressed umlaut? If the pdf simply skips it,
there are a good chances it is a font-related issue.

Have you tried Libertine? The font itself is not great, but it has a pretty
good coverage. You may also want to try the  the TeX Gyre fonts (TG Termes,
etc).
Which backend are you using? pdflatex or XeLaTeX/LuaTeX?

Linux Libertine should be on your system already if you use texlive. If you
are on ubuntu, it may be in some texlive-extra package. If you are on
Windows or Mac... then I don't know. You may have to ask again on the list
on how to install (if at all) Libertine on such systems. Notice however
that standard system fonts on either Windows or Mac should give you plenty
of coverage for unicode. So, you could try the step below and just choose
the  Windows- or Mac- standard fonts (I can't give you names, becaue I
don't use either syste,. I am referring to the default fonts they use).

Using XeLaTeX should be trivial. As Guenter says, you just select non-TeX
fonts in DocumentsSettingsFonts and then choose the font you want from
the dropdown menus.

Whether LilyPond will work with Xetex is another issue. I have never used
Lilypond and cannot tell you if there would be problems in that case.

Another method recommended is to cut the UTF8 coded Umlaut and paste it 
in the text. That did not help either (same as above).


including \u in the tex inset of the lyx file gave:

An error occurred while running:

lilypond-book --safe --pdf --latex-program=pdflatex --lily-output-dir=ly-pdf

Sakura-LilyUTF8NN.lytex


Unfortunately in the lilypond help file of lyx I could not find any note 
on this issue.


Anybody who knows what one could do?

Linux Libertine should be on your system already if you use texlive. If you
are on ubuntu, it may be in some texlive-extra package. If you are on

Recommended is to use a text editor which changes the coding to UTF8. I
used jedit for it.
However, inserting the text in the ERT of my lilypond lyx file did not
help:
The Umlaute (diacritics) e.g. ü = ue are not shown in the pdf output;
instead the vowel is not shown at all, no space:
Hügel (Huegel) is shown as Hgel.



Wolfgang, are you sure you are using a font that in fact includes the
proper glyph for the UTF8-addressed umlaut? If the pdf simply skips it,
there are a good chances it is a font-related issue.

( tried AE Palatino Bitstream Bookman Utopia Zapf .. )

but there are others not yet available. Which one would be suitable?

Have you tried Libertine? The font itself is not great, but it has a pretty
good coverage. You may also want to try the  the TeX Gyre fonts (TG Termes,
etc).
Which backend are you using? pdflatex or XeLaTeX/LuaTeX?

I use pdflatex. So I have to install Libertine and use XeLaTex? Never 
used it. Is it tricky to use?

Linux Libertine should be on your system already if you use texlive. If you
are on ubuntu, it may be in some texlive-extra package. If you are on
Windows or Mac... then I don't know. You may have to ask again on the list
on how to install (if at all) Libertine on such systems. Notice however
that standard system fonts on either Windows or Mac should give you plenty
of coverage for unicode. So, you could try the step below and just choose
the  Windows- or Mac- standard fonts (I can't give you names, becaue I
don't use either syste,. I am referring to the default fonts they use).

Using XeLaTeX "should" be trivial. As Guenter says, you just select non-TeX
fonts in Documents>>Settings>>Fonts and then choose the font you want from
the dropdown menus.

Whether LilyPond will work with Xetex is another issue. I have never used
Lilypond and cannot tell you if there would be problems in that case.
