Thanks for your comments, Neal! I used to do that too, but I'm prone to
forgetting or even mixing the "small steps," so for me it's important to
automate as much as possible! ;)

Enjoyed reading this, thanks!
1 minor comment: My procedure for inserting graphics is usually to choose
scale to 100% columnwidth (or textwidth) for an article. Usually for beamer
I'll scale to 85% of textheight, unless there's other text on the page, in
which case I'll choose perhaps 75% textheight. I've never used scaling to
fixed dimensions.

Although your procedure to automatically center graphics is more automatic,
I simply choose paragraph setting centered before inserting the graphic (and
if scaled 100% textwidth doesn't matter if it's centered anyway).

Yes, that was what I was asking. I've found that if we make a trac
ticket with a minimal example, it might not receive attenion at the
time, but there's a higher chance that it will be fixed.

Lovely book. I am up to about page 53 and it has remind me of things I have
forgotten and taught me a number of new things.

I second Steve Litt's comment about the language. Very easy to read and
does not--at least so far need any English editing. It would be nice if 90%
of the native English speakers I know wrote as well.

I reported them on this list, many, many times, and was shouted down as
people priortized just-right rendering of Apple Retina Displays over
any sane way of LyX authoring 21st century flowing text books (ePub,
for instance) without repeated human intervention.

I was told that the xhtml and html export mechanisms were "just fine"
for ePub. They use different styles for the first paragraph after a
heading, for gosh sakes. They almost completely converted styles to
inline appearance codes so I couldn't customize my ePubs via CSS. The
HTML they put out wasn't WYSIWYM, it was 100% pure fingerpainting. The
files were therefore HUGE.

Understanding that xhtml/html exports would never be adequate for ePub,
I begged for the transition of LyX's language to well-formed XML to be
completed so I could write my own LyX to ePub converter. No. Too much
work.

After years of begging and pleading, I created Stylz to author both PDF
and ePub. I am writing two different books written in Stylz.
It's not easy for one developer to develop an authoring tool and write
books at the same time, but I'm doing it. Stylz already renders HTML
beautifully, does ePub pretty darn well, but its rendering in PDF is
defective and needs several repairs.

I had given up on LyX, because it's important I be able to have one
document render both PDF and *high quality* ePub, without human
intervention. If lwarp can *correctly and semantically* export LyX to
HTML5 *as XML*, I might write the HTML5 to ePub converter and return to
the LyX fold.

But if you're asking me to report the inadequacies of LyX' html and
xhtml exports for the purpose of ePub, I've done my time. And nobody
cared. And I've moved on.

Have you reported bugs for this or are all of the bugs covered by

Thanks, Steve! I'll do! But it will take time, something I'm pretty short

Ricardo,

Please keep us all apprised of your work using lwarp to convert
LyX-derived LaTeX to ePub (and then to Kindle if required). I don't
have a whole lot of time but I might be able to help. I once built a
LyX-derived xhtml to ePub converter, but LyX' html and xhtml exporters
export pidgeon xhtml and html that requires all sorts of human
intervention and garbage removal. They convert styles to appearances
way too early.

I have a fairly complete Stylz to ePub converter that works pretty well.

So if lwarp's special ePub version of HTML is semantically sound, this
might be a possibility. See chapter 10 of
http://ctan.math.washington.edu/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/lwarp/lwarp.pdf

Very, very nice! I wish this book had been available in 2001 --- it
would have made my entry into LyX much easier. Today, I know
everything, having written 8 books in LyX, so I don't need to read your
book.

Well, except for the entirety of your Chapter 8, which today I know
nothing about, but in a few days will be an expert in thanks to your
book. And 4.1.4, Math, which will improve my very shaky LyX math
skills. And OpenType, which I didn't know existed until skimming your
book.

The book is aesthetically beautiful, something I usually don't care
about. But in the case of your book, it proves you eat your own dog
food (American idiom for using what you claim authority over), and do
it well.

Speaking of American idioms, the fact that you're a non-native English
speaker was almost impossible to detect. In no place did I find text
that was ambiguous, unclear, or not understandable. The very few places
where your non-English origins showed through made the book more
interesting and kept me on my toes, so I didn't start skipping over
huge sections of text. I'd recommend you not try to Anglicize the book
further: It's very readable to a monolingual American, and I'd imagine
Brits and Aussies and Canadians and New Zealanders and South Africans
and Liberians and people from Belize would have the same opinion.

The book's layout and organization make it appropriate for those new to
LyX to read straight through, while LyX cognoscenti can skip around to
grab what they haven't learned yet.

Because the document is not public.

I ended up replacing all text manually with "t". To my surprise, the
common double-click to select a word and drag to select further entire
words does not work in lyx. It would be nice if it is the same as in
other editors.

I tried this and it still errors out, but it prints a different error
related to a separate pdf used as an image in the document.

Re: Finding the cause of a failed lyx->pdf conversion

2017-03-07 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse
It runs PDFLaTeX repeatedly hence the repeated error messages.

What I do in these cases is

lyx -f -e pdflatex file.lyx

Then run

pdflatex file.tex

(preferably from TexTmate2 on the Mac with Command-R) and go to the
lines generating the error messages.

If I can figure out how to make it compile without error I try to
figure out how to fix this in LyX.

If all fails, remove EVERYTHING (text before and after, formatting and
loaded packages) step by step, until the error goes away. then generate
a very small file (Minimal Working Example) that produces the error and
post this here.

No you should never ignore the exit code from any command. A non-zero
exit code means an error.

I think the general advice is only to pay attention to the first LaTeX
error.

I don't understand. Why not? If there is a word in section 2.2.3 and LyX
exports with error with it and with no error without it, then the MWE
would include the word and in your description you would state "when I
remove the word abc, the error goes away". For more information, see:

I think there is a LaTeX package. Alternatively, in LyX in the outline
you can view labels and references. just filter for "BROKEN" and you
will see the current ones that are broken.

Finding the cause of a failed lyx->pdf conversion

2017-03-06 Thread Alexandru Băluț
I'm converting a LYX file to PDF from the command line and the conversion
apparently fails, the exit code of the process is 1:
$ lyx -e pdf2 docs/myfile.lyx -dbg latex

The process reports failure even though it did actually create a PDF file
which seems to be complete and usable. Is it safe to ignore the exit code
in case it managed to create the PDF?

When I do the export to PDF from the UI, I get the errors below. Why do
they appear twice?
LaTeX Error: \begin{document} ended by \end{thenomenclature}.
Extra \endgroup.
LaTeX Error: \begin{document} ended by \end{thenomenclature}.
Extra \endgroup.

The same errors appear like this when starting the conversion in the
console:
LaTeX.cpp (658): Log line: [3] (./myfile.nls
LaTeX.cpp (658): Log line:
LaTeX.cpp (658): Log line: ! LaTeX Error: \begin{document} ended by
\end{thenomenclature}.
LaTeX.cpp (848): line: 8
Desc: LaTeX Error: \begin{document} ended by \end{thenomenclature}.
Text:  \end{thenomenclature}

Your command was ignored.
Type Ito replace it with another command,
orto continue without it.

LaTeX.cpp (658): Log line: ! Extra \endgroup.
LaTeX.cpp (848): line: 8
Desc: Extra \endgroup.
Text:  \end{thenomenclature}

Things are pretty mixed up, but I think the worst is over.

LaTeX.cpp (658): Log line: ) [4]

Since the usage of the nomenclature elements in the document is pretty
straight-forward, meaning I have no idea how to change or fix the document
to fix this error, I tried to manually remove parts of the lyx document to
get to a minimal example.lyx which has this problem, to report a bug.

I kept removing stuff and I got to a point where I have a section 2.2.3
containing some simple text and if I remove its text leaving the section
empty (only the title), exporting to PDF succeeds with no errors, whereas
before it failed. I don't see how I could minimize the lyx file to be able
to report the bug. Any suggestions?

Side question: Removing paragraphs led to broken refs: "BROKEN: Ref: ...".
To me these seem important, one would not want the final document to
contain them, but maybe I'm missing something. Why are these errors ignored
when exporting to PDF? Is there a way to validate a lyx file from the
command line, and in such a way that these errors are not ignored? I
searched for "compile lyx file" but did not find much.

Thanks,
Alex

Glad you got it figured out! Indeed, it can take some time to narrow
down the issue, but it sounds like you got to the bottom of it.

For your curiosity, it's true that LyX changed to now report BibTeX
errors. See

  http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX.NewInLyX22

or Help > About LyX > Release Notes:

BibTeX errors are now processed and cause LyX to show the errors dialog.
Before, these errors were ignored, which means that it may happen that
documents that compiled without error with a previous version now
compile with error. However, because now in 2.2.x users can click on the
"Show Output Anyway" button, the document can still be viewed.

Hey Scott et al.,

Thank you for your patience -- and in fact that seemingly simple process
led me to the discovery of the problem. Apparently the new version of lyx
treated some technical errors in my bib file that were not creating or
showing a problem before, but these errors are obviously still wrong. My
bib file is ~560 pages, so I went through and discovered were they are --
and now it seems to work, great!

Can you send a minimal example to the list? In this case it would be a
.lyx file and a .bib file. For more information, see

Hey Lyx Users,

Thank you very much for the reply. I actually didn't receive a reply
earlier and I checked my spam, so perhaps also copy my gmail (
christos.a.makri...@gmail.com) as well.

I had tried taking out the comma from the citation that Scott mentioned
from the earlier post, but it doesn't solve the problem. I repeated it
again and am including the error message. Just to be clear, the bib file
was working fine on the earlier lyx version -- it's just the most recent
one creating the problem.

I have four LyX v. 2.1 documents that differ only by the citation
styles: oscola, apa, chicago, jurabib and all use the same bibtex
generated bibliography.
When I started using the document(s) in LyX v. 2.2.1 compilation of the
first three went fine as before but the one with jurabib threw the error
in discussion.

After many aimless attempts I could not resolve the problem and decided
to ask the list when I saw Jürgens advice.

The culprit in my case quite similarly was the wrong syntax of the
author list of one single entry in the KBibTeX database

Changing the author list
from
author = {{Cole, Peter} and {Hermon, Gebriella}},
to
author = {Cole, Peter and Hermon, Gabriella},
did it.

Thank you Jürgen and cheers,

Could you supply the references as you have it in your reference list?

You should have something like

Hey Lyx Community,

First time emailing the general list, so apologies if there's something I
am overlooking. I am a PhD candidate at Stanford working in economics and a
big fan of Lyx because of how easy it makes editing while still retaining
the flexibility and beautiful typesetting inherent in Latex.

The recent 2.2.2 version seems to produce a problem with my .bib file. In
particular, when I PDF my document, it gives a series of errors (see below).

I have spent quite a bit of time diagnosing the errors. First, I want to
note in case it is not clear that these errors never arise in previous
versions -- and I am still using 1.2.2 now because this newer version isn't
working for me. Second, it appears that one of the problems is when the
word "and" is in the citation; then double braces can partially remedy the
problem. I am not sure about the first three errors that came up though.

Just to give an example of one of my citations, see below.

@article{JaimovichSiu:highskilled,

title={{High-skilled immigration, STEM employment, and non-routine-biased
technical change}},

author={Jaimovich, Nir, and Siu, Henry E.},

journal={NBER working paper},

year={2017},

volume={},

number={},

pages={},

}

Does anyone know what the source of the problem is and/or a remedy?

Thank you for your time and interest!

The error means that pdflatex is not working on your PC. To fix this, please
1. open an Internet connection if not already)
2. open LyX and use the menu Tools->Reconfigure

LOL, silly me. I thought maybe I'd help him, clicked on the attachment,
the default was mupdf (I guess I configured wrong, bad user!), and
nothing happened. So I said "shine it" and went on to other things.

Sillier me: When showing text error messages, I put them on the
web with a pastebin app, and when they're graphical, I either copy the
text part and pastebin it, or post the graphic on a website under my
control, or if I've made it tiny (in filesize), I attach it AS AN
IMAGE. Some people post it to imgur.com.

I was always taught that, when asking questions, I should make it
trivially convenient for others to understand and answer.

Oh well, it could be worse. About 5 years ago a guy posted a ~ 1MB
"minimum working example" to the list, wrapped up i an RAR file :-)

In any case we would be better served with the text output of

There press the button that says "Go to next error" and see what is shows.

If I want to copy the word from the document into a text editor, all
German umlaute are broken. (Bucher or Danemark)

This is strange. It works very nice here with the LyX default (T1) font

I also tried some of the font encoding options like utf8 or utf8x, but

These are not *font* encodings but the encoding of the LaTeX input (the
*.tex source file).

Does anybody know a solution to this problem?

Try to figure out how to set the font encoding to T1 (e.g. in

Tables' numbers lyx-PDF file

2009-12-23 Thread murdock85

Hello everybody

I have a problem with lyx. when i draw a numbered table lyx works and gives
it a correct number. the same for the next table. But when i view the lyx
file as PDF file and take a look to the tables' numbers i notice that all
the tables, of a same chapter, get the same number. I mean that when i write
in lyx chapter 4-section 3(for istance) and put 2 tables that are numbered
automatically as table 6 and table 7, then when i update the PDF, i
notice that the 2 tables get the same number like table 4.2. i cannot
understand the reason. can anyone help me?? it very important. i am using it
for my Thesis.

You've sent your message two times.

Please try to save and close your lyx document. Then open it again and
click View PDF (pdflatex) to get whole document compiled again. If
your problem is related to number of latex executions, it may help.

Then report if your problem persists, giving us your platform and LyX

LyX, PDF Output and Image Quality

2009-11-10 Thread Rob Oakes
Hi Stefano,

Since I've been playing with this for the past few days, I thought I would
offer my findings so far.

SVG can also be used to wrap bitmap images, but I wouldn't recommend it.

For the professional writing book, I've been experimenting with support for
the different formats and trying to see which one offers the best output
(for both screen and print). (Since there's an entire chapter dedicated to
images and exchanging data between programs, I've had plenty of time to
play.) So far, the leader seems to be PDF (with EPS running a close second
place), at least when using pdflatex. I've experienced occasional weirdness
when processing with XeTeX and still haven't been able to determine why.

Unfortunately, SVG doesn't fare so well. At least on my Ubuntu 9.10 box,
LyX has a hard time converting the images for preview and LaTeX will produce
all kinds of strange output. Especially if the SVG makes use of unsupported
tags.

And of course, both Inkscape and Adobe Illustrator will produce SVG with
tags that other applications don't recognize. (And just because it is SVG
doesn't mean that another SVG editor will be able to read it. See
http://www.oak-tree.us/blog/index.php/2008/12/13/wpf-svg-xaml-part1 for
more.) Luckily, however, Inkscape has FANTASTIC support for exporting to
PDF. (I only discovered this the other day and Inkscape has now become my
new favorite program.) It can import PDF files from Adobe CS3 and other
programs (while maintaining full support for text and other elements),
resize the document boundaries and then export back to PDF seamlessly. It
also handles technical drawings created in Dia and Kivio (native file
formats for both programs). I've even had good luck with material from
Visio (if it's first been exported to PDF).

For raster images, it seems like PNG works the best (though most of the
raster images I've been using are screenshots). A friend who does
layout/design has suggested that I spend some time with PDF raster images,
but I haven't yet seen the need.

Hope this is of some help.

LyX, PDF Output and Image Quality

Booksurge wants you to emded all fonts in your pdf. Sometimes, the 14 basic
fonts are not embed. You can see what fonts are embed in a pdf file with
Acrobat Reader, KPDF or the command line program pdfinfo

If you produce your pdf with pdflatex, the option to look is the

If you produce you pdf with xetex, there is a -E option for xdvipdfmx that
will try to embed all fonts.

I don't know about Booksurge but here are a few thoughts.

1. If you publish via Lulu there is no upfront fee. You only pay for
proof copies you order.

2. Lulu has the same requirement for Adobe-created pdf but, in practice,
the Lyx version created with ps2pdf seems to work without problems.

3. For Lulu, I generally upload the file as ps, and Lulu then convert it
themselves. I don't know whether Booksurge accepts ps. (Actually, Lulu
doesn't list ps as a possibility in their FAQ but you can use it.)

5. Moral of the story: have a look at Lulu before paying money upfront
to Booksurge. It might be worth searching the forums at Lulu for
opinions by people who have tried both.

Hope this is some use,

Anthony

I tend to agree with this. I have used LyX to publish two books through
Lulu. I went straight to pdflatex and had no problem at all. One of the
books was a cookbook with a lot of scanned hand drawings that required
LyX to use a lot of boxes. Both used LyX 1.4.something on Debian Etch.

As Anthony says, you can avoid pdf glitches by letting them convert a
ps file.

I had the impression that all these outfits used the same printing
facilities, but I can't verify that.

There are Lulu forum entries that compare different DIY publishing
possibilities. I never found them too helpful, but that may because I
never had the stamina to read to the end of the very, very long
threads.

Alan

Anthony

   1. If you have self published through Booksurge, please answer
whether Booksurge accepts LyX generated pdfs.

I will soon be self-publishing a book, preferably through Booksurge.
Booksurge accepts PDF files, but only if they meet Booksurge
specifications. However, they do not explain their specifications.
Instead, they only explain the steps to save/print the PDF from
  various versions of adobe acrobat.

In order to find out whether my pdf will meet their requirements
they require full payment of their up-front fee. They will not
provide any additional assistance in determining whether a LyX pdf
  meets their requirements.

  2. Most of their specifications do not apply to me since this
will be a black-and-white, no images, text only book. But one area
is of more concern. They instruct:
   *Under the fonts tab*
  **
  * Deselect the subset embedded fonts option.*
  **
  * Select ALL of the fonts under Font Source and add them to
  Always Embed.*

These instructions are found here for acrobat version 8
   http://www.booksurgepages.com/Downloads/TwoStepstoPDFv8.pdf

In my Lyx generated PDF document under Properties the Fonts
tab shows a long list of fonts and following each font is
written:(embedded subset) type 1, encoding: custom.

Booksurge claims they could not answer whether (embedded subset)
type 1, encoding: custom meets their requirements. Any opinions?

I don't know about Booksurge but here are a few thoughts.

 1. If you publish via Lulu there is no upfront fee. You only pay for
 proof copies you order.

 2. Lulu has the same requirement for Adobe-created pdf but, in
practice, the Lyx version created with ps2pdf seems to work without
 problems.

 3. For Lulu, I generally upload the file as ps, and Lulu then convert

I never found them too helpful, but that may because I
never had the stamina to read to the end of the very, very long
threads.
