Re: changing tab group in java preferences using Voiceover

2012-07-24 Thread Esther
Hi Dónal,

You have my permission to use any of my text, and you can also link to the
discussions here using the Mail Archive site. This post doesn't cover the
other issue about not being able to interact with and check/uncheck items in
the tables on the Java Preferences tabs. As Paula also reported, VoiceOver
announces empty table. I really want to emphasize that university and
college students who are using Blackboard are likely to have to use the Java
Preferences utility when certificates expire or need to be fixed, so if Apple
wants to continue maintaining its presence in the field of higher education,
and also support accessibility there, this has to be fixed. It's another one
of those items that was reported to them previously, but is becoming more of an
issue.

Thanks,

Esther

2012-07-24 Thread Diane Bomar
This used to happen to me, quite frequently, especially after having the
phone on a music dock, then taking it off. Hasn't happened under ios 5.1.1,
though. My solution was to call the phone from another line, and raise the
volume while the call was live. Sometimes that meant pressing the home
button, so that the call screen was not in the foreground.

There is a rotor option for volume, but difficult to use that when VO is not
speaking. Actually, I had not thought about this problem for a while, but
have not experienced it on my 4s. It used to happen when I was using a 4,
though. Don't know if the problem went away, or if a hardware or software
upgrade fixed it.

Glad to know you got it working, for now.

How to use a remote disk drive?

2012-07-24 Thread Eric Caron
Hello Listers,

I've seen several references to people using a remote disc drive on
another Mac with their Mac Book Air or Mini. And, this will be used more often
with the new mac Book Pro that has no CD drive. Can someone familiar with this
process describe the steps needed? In my case I have a mini and a mac book. I
will also eventually have another mac and it would be helpful to be able to
leave the superdrive connected to one computer or just use the one on the mac
book for all the computers.

Thanks for your tips.

Re: iA Writer writing app for iPad and iPhone updates

2012-07-24 Thread Esther
Hello Mary,
• It sounds, from your description of the IA writer app, that you are actually
using the iPad to type texts. I've been using an Apple bt keyboard to
accomplish this if I have to write anything of length, because I find it so
much faster to type that way without having to wait for vo feedback for each
letter typed. So I'm curious, as I assume you're not using a bt keyboard in
conjunction with this app, as moving your hands from the keyboard to the iPad
would be inefficient, and you have all the access to keys or key combinations
on the external keyboard that this app supplies. I get the convenience factor
of not having to have two pieces of gear if you use this app. Just wondering
about the efficiency hit.

For any extensive text inputting on the iPad I use a Bluetooth keyboard. And I
generally use the Apple keyboard because I touch type and also make use of all
the standard shortcut keys for editing and selecting. However, I don't always
carry along a Bluetooth keyboard with my iPad, and I really like the fact that
you can make editing corrections and modifications with the iA Writer app. So,
for example, if needed to excerpt part of a document that I placed in my
Dropbox, make a few modifications, and send it in a mail message, it's fairly
easy to do this in the iA Writer app without a keyboard.

• Also, I have an iPad 1, so if you're on the newer model, perhaps there is
less lag between touching letters and vo announcement?
The iPad 1 definitely shows more lag in terms of keyboard responsiveness than
with the iPad 2 if I'm running VoiceOver and also if I have other apps in the
App Switcher. I also have to clear the Safari cache out in some instances to
see better performance -- I think Emrah mentioned this about the iPad on this
list quite a while ago, and I found this to be true in my experience.

I recently received the TouchFire keyboard for the iPad. I haven't had much
opportunity to play with it, as recently there seem to have been lots of other
distractions *smile*. The TouchFire keyboard is a Kickstarter project to
design a very lightweight keyboard that rests on top of the iPad and that can
be carried/held against the back of the magnetic smart covers that are used
with the iPad 2 and 3, and folded out of the way when you don't want the
keyboard between you and the screen.

The keyboard is a thin, molded silicon overlay that fits over the bottom part
of the iPad screen, and only weighs a couple of ounces. It's held in place
magnetically on the iPad 2 and 3. Although it can be used with the first
generation iPad, it doesn't automatically lock into the correct position with
the magnetic attachment -- it has to be overlaid on the screen -- so I'm not
sure how easily its position could be tweaked by a blind user. The f and j
keys are flagged, and you can rest your fingers on the keys without activating
the screen/keys.

Even though the lag when typing on later model iPads is less than for the
first generation iPad, I may have to turn VoiceOver off when I type to get real
speed out of this, because you can type faster than the touch typing mode of
VoiceOver can respond. It's also a bit odd in sensation, because the new
keyboards feel slightly sticky. We've been told that's because they come out
of the factory absolutely new, and as soon as a bit of dust of wear gets on the
silcone, the stickiness will go away. Also, the keys have square outlines, but
the surface isn't flat. Each key has four small indentations that support the
key against the iPad screen. You can swipe through the bottom of the silicon
(where the lock screen control is in landscape mode, which is below where the
bottom row of keys would appear) and have the gesture work.

I know that the Touchfire is supposed to support other language keyboards,
including French, but I find that the position of the right hand keys (o,
p, l, m) on the French keyboard is slightly off from the position of the
same keys on the English input keyboard that the Touchfire matches. (I asked
someone to look at this to check, and there is a slight offset with the
virtual keys for those letters being centered slightly to the left of the
corresponding keys on the English input keyboard.

I'm not sure how I like this yet, because I've been doing other things than
just trying to type with it. You can read more about this keyboard in a review
by the Gadgeteer:
• Touchfire Screen-Top Keyboard for iPad Review by Julie on July 11, 2012:
http://the-gadgeteer.com/2012/07/11/touchfire-screen-top-keyboard-for-ipad-review/

This was $45 from Kickstarter, including shipment.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

This is a genuine accessibility issue with Java Preferences. VoiceOver
doesn't see tabs other than the one that is currently selected, so they
don't show up in item chooser menu, and you can't use it, or any of the
other normal ways to navigate to them and select them. I've posted a
complete solution for Paula on how to use Mouse Keys to navigate to any of
the tabs and select them, because you can move vertically down from the
Java Preferences heading in the title bar with Mouse Keys and VoiceOver
will tell you when you have moved over the Network tab if you've set the
verbosity to speak items under the mouse cursor by checking that box in the
announcements tab under VoiceOver Utility. Then you can start moving
horizontally with Mouse Keys either to the left or right to navigate to the
other tabs. It's just that it takes a lot of key presses to move this way
-- I think about 32 presses of the k key to move down to the edge of the
tabs, and about 75 key presses to mov
e across any tab horizontally. It was only about 10 presses of the u key
to move left to the Security tab if you moved down from the heading, but
it would take another 75 or so to move to the edge of the General tab in
order to click it, which you can do by pressing the i key. This will
work every time and go directly to the control you want, but typing out the
explanation of how to set up Mouse Keys and mapping out the number of key
presses takes longer than just moving your cursor with your finger on the
Trackpad, guided by the edge, if you only need to get to one of the tabs.

Incidentally, the VoiceOver reporting behavior when I navigate onto the tab
group with Mouse Keys also tells me there's an accessibility issue with the
setup. I shouldn't hear the tab reported until I'm directly over it, but
somehow, as I move down towards the tab area, VoiceOver starts reporting
the currently selected tab group, and only identifies the individual tab
names, with radio button appended, once I am directly over those tabs.
It's as though the currently selected tab blots out the tab grouping
selection, which is indeed how it appears from the item chooser menu
behavior -- only the currently selected tab, whichever one it is, is
 visible to VoiceOver.

If any list members are working as developers with the Mountain Lion gold
master, please check the behavior of Java Preferences!

Generally expanding anything in Mail, tree views, or message conversation
threads, is simply a question of pressing the right cursor key. This does
not always work if you have quick nav on, in which case I find that using

I don't recall making changes to the settings.
Also, it may not be related, but last night while I was streaming some radio

The volume was all the way down, so I quickly figured that out and just

Re: More on Mouse keys

2012-07-24 Thread David Griffith
There is a slight drawback that I have found in having Mouse keys in the
background when Num pad commander is on.
It appears that num pad commander does not retain command of the 5 key. You
will therefore lose focus when you think you are using 5 to deliver the of vo
space you will in fact be delivering a mouse click.

The only way around this I have found is to turn mouse keys off BY pressing the
option key 5 times until VO announces mouse keys off. Then you can recommence
num pad commander as normal.
Still usable, but not so convenient.

What I did was the following.
I went to Universal Access preferences and turned Mouse Keys on under the
 Mouse / Trackpad tab.

Mouse Keys will not work whilst you have Num Pad commander on.
but If you press VO Clear to turn NumPad commander off you will gain
instant access to mouse keys. I found the movement of the mouse pointer
rather slow so I will probably speed this up. Turn num pad commander on again
with VO clear once you are finished with Mouse keys.
This is very useful as I find control with the trackpad extremely difficult.

time not being announced

2012-07-24 Thread Glenn
Hi All,
On the time not being spoken when I press the lock button, which I wrote in
about earlier;
I have not cleared my app switcher in about 3 or 4 weeks, so I did that, and
that was not fixing it, so I did the reset with pressing the lock button 5
times, and it booted back and now it says the time as it should, when I
press the lock switch.
Also, I don't know if it fixed the problem of the volume going down when
listening to Pandora when I get a phone call, I'll post on that if I get a
call again while listening to music.

Finder Busy Complex question

2012-07-24 Thread Timothy J. Meloy
Hello all,

The situation:

Mac Mini running 10.6.8; 8 gigs ram and rather proficient Mac user. The
computer ran fine until a couple months ago when the user abruptly disconnected
the monitor which has not been used since. From that time, the computer has
run very sluggishly anytime you activate any finder windows; run applications;
or in general, attempt to use the machine. Today, the user backed the system
up using Carbon Copy Cloner to an external drive. Upon completion of said
backup, the user attempted to boot from the drive to test its bootability. The
user discovered that not only did it boot wel, but that it was possible to
navigate in finder windows without any kind of delay.

Is there anyone who can shed any light on this scenario? At first the user
believed it might be the missing monitor, and I mentioned this as a
possibility, as I recall there have been some discussions on the necessity (or
not) of the connection to a monitor for the mini to run smoothly. Yet, if this
were the problem, what would booting from an external rather than the internal
have anything to do with monitors (or lack thereof) as to make it usable in a
normal way when booted from the external while still unusable when booted from
the internal if there were no monitor present during either booting?

Any and all suggestions and insights would be much appreciated.

Basically, the user is willing to do a clean install if that is truly
necessary, but of course would rather it weren't. Someone please advise.
Thank you,

T.J.

I think there is some links to Training resources on the main Mac-Access

My temperamental iPhone!

2012-07-24 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Hi all,

this is very bizarre. Here are several scenarios:

1. voiceover is turned on. no sound whatsoever from the phone. No voice, no
background beeps; nothing.

2. someone rings. voiceover behaves perfectly.

3. voiceover is turned off. Phone behaves perfectly.

I am confused. very very very confused! help!

cheers :)

Will -- Which exact model do you have and what results did you get when you

brailliant and one of the first hits was Apple's own document titled
Humanware Brailliant: Device keys for VoiceOver navigation which includes a
table that seems to cover a lot of IOS commands for this device.

skim with voiceover.

2012-07-24 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Hi all,

well I'm still looking for a decent PDF reader on the mac. Sadly Skim still
isn't doing it for me. In essence, it works well enough. However I find I get
very stilted reading. for example I might get a sentence like:

s ee f igure 1.

So I reckon that given some of you are using it pretty successfully there must
be a reason; some setting or config option I've set differently.

Would anyone mind sharing how they have the display, pdf and other relevant
options set? Ar there any special tweaks which I need to make?

Sincere thanks for any help I really don't want to have to crank up my windows
machine just to read a PDF.

Yes, we're running that version of Bento but our OS is slightly different.

1. Can you tell if it's trying to open any particular database upon launch?
Perhhaps there's a corruption issue with that particular database. I think you
can try launching the app while holding down the Option key if you want to
change the startup default database.

No. It hasn't ever been used on this machine before. So there should be no
database issues.

• 2. Is it a trial version whose time has expired? Some Apps will pop a
reminder dialog over top of the main window to nag you for payment.

No, it's one which we bought and downloaded from the FileMaker online store.

3. Is it set to display database items in grid view? Grid view is not
accessible to VO, so I'd suggest using either table view (command+1) or Form
view (command+4).

As I say we cannot change the views with VoiceOver running but I will check to
see what it's set too by default.

Thanks for your input.

Re: Merge Utility and VM Fusion

2012-07-24 Thread Bryan Jones
Eric --A few thoughts:
1. Regarding a utility named Merge -- Might you perhaps be referring to
Apple's utility named Migration Assistant? If you really are using a program
named Merge, could you provide some more details about it, such as where you
found this utility, what it is supposed to do, what version you are running?
2. Did you completely power down the VM before beginning the process of moving
it to the new mac? VMWare specifically warns against copying virtual machines
that are in sleep, suspend or hibernation mode.
3. What model mac are you copying from / to? They will likely have different
hardware components which means the VMs will likely require different device
drivers, thus possibly requiring a re-run of the VM Tools utility on the new
mac.
4. Did you use this Merge utility to move the VMWare Fusion Application from
your old mac to the new? I'm referring to the Fusion application itself, not
just the virtual machine. Perhaps you might try installing Fusion from scratch
on the new machine and, if you are considering upgrading to version 4 as you
mentioned, maybe don't even bother installing your current version, just go
with the trial of version 4, which you can download from VMWare.com. It'll
import your existing VMs and you'll be able to get a feel for the new version
before deciding whether you want to upgrade.

HTH,
Bryan

you're taken to the web site, but I don't think the login name with a hyphen

Re: Profiles on iOS

Hi Sarah

No, I don't mean either of those things actually. Let me explain. As part of
the job I may be in line for shortly, it will be my duty to configure and
maintain iPads for a bunch of students in an academy. What I wanted to do was
to disable certain functions on the iPad, such as the iTunes App Store. Since
these devices will be the property of the academy, we would only require
school-related software and content to be installed. Thus, my query regarding
a profile which we could lock, in order to prevent such activities as app and
music installation.

This has nothing whatever to do with beta testing software. I actually know
how that's done as it happens.

Re: iA Writer writing app for iPad and iPhone updates

2012-07-24 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Esther,
It sounds, from your description of the IA writer app, that you are actually
using the iPad to type texts.
Also, I have an iPad 1, so if you're on the newer
model, perhaps there is less lag between touching letters and vo announcement?

Migration Assistant is what I used. Sorry for the name confusion.

 2. Did you completely power down the VM before beginning the process of
moving it to the new mac? VMWare specifically warns against copying virtual
machines that are in sleep, suspend or hibernation mode.
yes, it was completely shut down.

 3. What model mac are you copying from / to? They will likely have different
hardware components which means the VMs will likely require

different device drivers, thus possibly requiring a re-run of the VM Tools
 utility on the new mac.

old computer 2009 mac book

When I try to start the VM it just says VM fusion has no windows. When I try
to start the VM all the choices are dimmed.

when I tried to import I did find a message that said the configuration file is
corrupt.

 4. Did you use this Merge utility to move the VMWare Fusion Application
from your old mac to the new? I'm referring to the Fusion application itself,
not just the virtual machine. Perhaps you might try installing Fusion from
scratch on the new machine and, if you are considering upgrading to version 4
as you mentioned, maybe don't even bother installing your current version,
just go with the trial of version 4, which you can download from VMWare.com.
It'll import your existing VMs and you'll be able to get a feel for the new
version before deciding whether you want to upgrade.
Yes I moved it using migration Assistant
I was hoping it would just work with version 3.1 for awhile as I am afraid to
use up the darn jAWS keys

I had tried some time ago to upgrade to VM fusion 4 and the VM did not work
correctly that is JAWS didn't and I wasted several authorizations.. . the
next time I upgrade I plan to just start from scratch with a new install of the
VM 4 and win 7 and jaws.

I may use this as a opportunity to do a updated podcast on the process. though
it may take a long time as I expect i'll make many mistakes.
But a updated walk through would probably be helpful to many mac users.

Perhaps I'll just let the vM update to version 4 as it keeps asking me. and
then from there do a completely new install.

these tips and thoughts are very helpful and appreciated.

You might be able to use the iPhone configuration utility to do this. I don't
use it in that fashion but from what i understand you can create specific
profiles for specific things, for example to connect to a wifi network and all
you do is email someone that profile and when they get to your destination.
They just install said profile and away they go. You might be able to find it
at http://Apple.Com/downloads

Here's an article that explains what this tool does and how you might the able
to benefit from it.

good luck.

This is a genuine accessibility issue with Java Preferences. VoiceOver doesn't

navigate to them and select them. I've posted a complete solution for Paula on
how to use Mouse Keys to navigate to any of the tabs and select them, because
you can move vertically down from the Java Preferences heading in the title
bar with Mouse Keys and VoiceOver will tell you when you have moved over the
Network tab if you've set the verbosity to speak items under the mouse cursor
by checking that box in the announcements tab under VoiceOver Utility. Then you
can start moving horizontally with Mouse Keys either to the left or right to
navigate to the other tabs. It's just that it takes a lot of key presses to
move this way -- I think about 32 presses of the k key to move down to the
edge of the tabs, and about 75 key presses to mov
e across any tab horizontally. It was only about 10 presses of the u key to
move left to the Security tab if you moved down from the heading, but it
would take another 75 or so to move to the edge of the General tab in order
to click it, which you can do by pressing the i key. This will work every
time and go directly to the control you want, but typing out the explanation of
how to set up Mouse Keys and mapping out the number of key presses takes longer
than just moving your cursor with your finger on the Trackpad, guided by the
edge, if you only need to get to one of the tabs.

Incidentally, the VoiceOver reporting behavior when I navigate onto the tab
group with Mouse Keys also tells me there's an accessibility issue with the
setup. I shouldn't hear the tab reported until I'm directly over it, but
somehow, as I move down towards the tab area, VoiceOver starts reporting the
currently selected tab group, and only identifies the individual tab names,
with radio button appended, once I am directly over those tabs. It's as
though the currently selected tab blots out the tab grouping selection, which
is indeed how it appears from the item chooser menu behavior -- only the
currently selected tab, whichever one it is, is visible to VoiceOver.

If any list members are working as developers with the Mountain Lion gold
master, please check the behavior of Java Preferences!

Hi Zack

Yes, I knew about that but the point is you cannot lock those options down.
For instance, a student could simply go into the restrictions area and undo
what I did.

Re: crash plan questions, and some issues with said software

2012-07-24 Thread Sarah Alawami
Actually that didn't work. I had to turn off vo and then click it with the
mouse. But you are supposed to be able to change settings like bandwidth speed
and priority according to the wonderfully written faq i read all of and
practically memorized. Except the settings part is no ware in the app. And now
when i woke up this morning i got Cache: Queued in the status window. It's
been like that for who knows how long. I hope it's not going to stay that way
all day.

There is one major bug when you want to set up a folder to back up what ever
you want to back up. I have mine on an external 2 tb drive which is more then
enough space. When you want to select a folder, for some reason vo down arrow
selects multiple rows. I had to hit down arrow which did not speak then hit
vo f6 to see what folder i was on. We'll see if the folder back up works. As of
now and starting about an hour ago it says waiting for back up. All of this
worked until i went to bed last night so i really can't say what happened.
Thank goodness i'm on the unlimited trial for now anyways. I was thinking of
getting this service but as of now since i had all of these problems when i got
up, i'm not so sure.

All in all the software looks pretty good. It's the server end i'm worried
about. Looking at the logs i see no reason why i should have seen that since
who knows when lol! hopefully the software will be improved over time. It's
already there, but it needs just a tad more work.

Take care all and be blessed.

and maintain iPads for a bunch of students in an academy. What I wanted to
do was to disable certain functions on the iPad, such as the iTunes App
Store. Since these devices will be the property of the academy, we would
only require school-related software and content to be installed. Thus, my
query regarding a profile which we could lock, in order to prevent such
activities as app and music installation.

This has nothing whatever to do with beta testing software. I actually
know how that's done as it happens.

Re: command click not working

2012-07-24 Thread Sarah Alawami
Actually it's option click. and the best work around it sot vo cmd f5 not he
restore button, turn off vo and option click the restore button then turn on
vo. You will then choose the ipsw for your restore.

Take care.

If you have a local apple store, see if there is a well-trained,

have found one in Denver.

She is terrific, as she actually uses VO and no monitor!

Hi,

I am relatively new to Macs having used Windows and Jaws for many years.
My employer has only recently updated from snowleopard to lion and this
has thrown me into a little confusion.

I am looking for some, competent, training on lion using voiceover. Any
suggestions?

hello Esther and others,

that was a interesting article. I thought that it was possible that maybe
Dropbox took up more bandwidth then Google Drive causing the busy problem,
but the article seems to imply that The default Dropbox setting is taking up
less.
If I can figure out how to access the Dropbox settings I'll try to play with
them. it would be fun to try to fix the problem.

the Mini is a greg little computer over all. It is very snappy compared to
my 2009 mac book with 4 gigs. this 2011 computer with 8 gigs is deffinately
more responsive.I would be perfectly happy to use it without a screen,
but if unexpected performance problems can be avoided by getting a screen
then that will be my solution.

Now I just need to learn a little about modern computer screens as I have
not looked into that for well over a decade. I don't even know what HDMI
stands for or what the HDMI to DVI converter cable is.

Anyone out there have screen info for me?

Hi Eric,

That's very interesting about being able to use Google Drive. I think the
relevant property about the kind of outside network resources that you
use, and how it might impact your Mac Mini's Finder busy message, is what
happens with the file syncing and updating of information. With Dropbox,
and also with Google Drive, there are advanced menu options for
controlling what you sync and the syncing speeds for upload and download.
I've never experimented with these, but this basically establishes the
amount of network bandwidth you might be using with your various file
operations. I suspect that this is what is contributing to amount of
Finder activity that you're seeing without a monitor. In the meantime,
you've provided a useful piece of information for other Mini users who
want to use a file transfer facility.

I'll give you a link to a recent Lifehacker article that compares Google
Drive and Dropbox, and describes the differences in syncing speed.
There's also an interesting comment about being able to use Google's OCR
capabilities on scanned document files. I'm not sure whether all the
features that are mentioned are accessible.

Hi Esther and others,

the blog post from John is very helpful and makes me feel better that
once I find a monitor I'll have a nicely functioning mini. One
interesting thing about the observation concerning outside network
resources. I have this problem with Dropbox but not with google drive.

This is helpful as I can use google drive as a easy way to transfer files
to and from my mini just like dropbox. i'll do this until I find a
monitor. I do rely on Dropbox so this is only a temporary solution.
