Re: Looking at the new skype for ios

2014-06-13 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello Guys,

I’m sorry, I couldn’t disagree more. The new app is crap! If I wanted to use a
instant messaging app I’d go and find one. I just want to see my list of
contacts and make a audio or video call.

Why have a recents tab but constantly displaying it. I just want a simple list
of my contacts but tapping people doesn’t do it. I’ve wasted too much time
trying to make it out. It’s a very messy interface. The back button doesn’t
appear in the top left etc. It’s the same on iPad and iPhone.

Hello,

I just don’t have the time to faff about and explain again I don’t do chats. I
just want to make a VOIP phone call. I can’t get rid of my history. Even by
tapping home. If I tap the contacts name in that historical list, I cannot
select call or video call. It’s a great little instant messenger. But not my

Thanks.

Was it this list - Ham software on the Mac?

2014-06-05 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello All,

Not sure if it was this list where someone was asking about rig control via a
Mac? Well I acme across this product, see link below. I guess some people will
not like the price but it just might provide a wonderful solution. Sadly, the
Mac platform seems to be the weakest because of the way in which the Mac deals
with serial interfaces. Basically you buy this linux box and link it to your
radio and an ethernet port of your router. Then you can control it via a number
of platforms including an iPad.

Re: Creating a bel file on the Mac platform?

2014-06-03 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello John,

Thanks for your help. Originally saw a new application called emboss and didn’t
think to look further. After your message I looked and found the actual
application louis. So I am now making progress.

As the embosser works from the braille lite via the parallel port I need to
switch it over to serial connection. I have found from Index a manual for Basic
V1 which sounds like this model. It has a recessed switch low down on the back
panel. Not easy to get at. That I need to switch to serial connection. I
couldn’t reach properly and while it is working with the lite I don’t want to
mess it up yet.

I have been copying files onto a floppy and feeding them to the embosser via
the lite. What I am trying to do is to braille out is track listings for vinyl
records. What I am finding is that louis ignores my carriage returns and
doesn’t keep a list format. Should I be able to do this via Louis? Or do I need
to spend money on an expensive software package?

Your comments are appreciated.

Braille translation

2014-06-02 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello All,

You might see from an earlier posting, I am trying to get an Index Basic
working from my Mac. I’ve found the OSx copy of nfbtrans and I’ve installed
louis. As for nfbtrans it doesn’t want to generate grade 2 braille. The file is
created but is blank. Louis will see the Index connected via the serial USB but
doesn’t respond when I hit the emboss button. Louis doesn’t see the USB
Parallel connection.

The embosser works via the parallel port as I have embossed via my BrailleLite
40. I can transfer files from the computer via floppy disk but I’d just like
the Mac talking direct to the embosser.

Any help please?

Can my mac manage a parallel port for embossing?

2014-06-02 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello All,

I’m trying to get an old Index Basic working with my Mac Mini. I have an USB 2
Paralle. I have installed a USB 2 Serial driver to try the serial route. In the
system report; That it sees an IEEE-1284 device and has this listing.

IEEE-1284 Controller:

  Product ID: 0x2305
  Vendor ID:0x067b (Prolific Technology, Inc.)
  Version: 2.00
  Speed:Up to 12 Mb/sec
  Manufacturer: Prolific Technology Inc.
  Location ID: 0x1440 / 2
  Current Available (mA): 500
  Current Required (mA):100

In linux I would now echo something to the /dev listing but I don’t know if it
is listed in /dev. The add printer tool doesn’t allow you to specify USB or
Parallel connection. What on earth does it mean by offering fax, ip and window?

Does anyone use an old parallel or serial on a new Mac? If so, how did you
configure it?

Hello,

Well dd is not really that bad. If you look at the Rasberry Pie communities
you’ll see what utils are available for writing raw data to SD Cards.

in file equals out file. The SD Card must not be mounted.

I have a .IMG file which is the firmware for a device that I need to flash.
The only problem is, it's a .IMG file, not an ISO. And, it's definitely! not
a DMG. The documentation states that I need to burn the .IMG file to a micro
SD card, therefore placing the image on the card, and making it bootable.
Before any of you who may be fairly basic to intermediate mac users say
anything about, just hit command+C on the file, move to your SD card, and hit
command+V to paste, no. That won't work. It's not that easy. I don't need
the actual .IMG file on the SD card. If it was that simple, I'd already have
done it. No, I can't hit command+O on the file in the Finder, extract its
contents then copy the contents to the card. That won't work either. The
card has to be bootable, and that method, though it may get the content
there won't keep it as such. I know how to make the card be formatted Fat32,
and I know how to make the card only have 1 partition. I also know how to m
ake that partition active... I... think, all of which are required. The only
thing I don't! know how to do is get that darn IMG image extracted/burned for
lack of better term, to the SD card itself. I know about the drag and drop
method of Disk Utility. I know that works for ISO's, and I also know it
works for DMG's, obviously, but will it work with IMG's? If so, then, I
should be in business. Yeah, I suppose I could use terminal in combination
with DD, but that's downright a pain in the kneck to do. I'll do it if
there's no other way, but I really don't wanna have to go read man pages to
figure out how the dd command works if I don't have to.

 Any suggestions?

 Chris.

I could be wrong but I believe an ISO image is more or less the same.

Re: Turning Wi-Fi On and Off on My MacBook Pro

Hello,

Don’t worry about it. If there’s a cable in the ethernet port it will use that
connection. With the newer Macbook’s there’s not a physical switch to turn it
off. During the boot up process the ethernet port will be configured very early
whereas, wireless requires a lot more running processes to function.

Re: More On The iDatabase App

2013-12-16 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello Dane,

Many thanks for your investigations. I’m very busy at the moment, so hope to
play once everything has stopped for Christmas. From what I saw iDatabase is a
very slim flat database i.e. not a relational database. Which probably mean
I’ll need to use a open source back end and write php interface. If I want to
use relational features.

Thanks.

The accessibility problem with the Mac App as far as I've found seems to be
when you come to Define a new database or modify the structure of an

you can see what sort of field you can use - that is a numeric field, big or

Re: can programs designed for lenox also be used on OS 10 Maverick

2013-12-11 Thread Georgina Joyce
 Hello,

An interesting point of view. I agree I enjoyed playing with linux from
scratch. It can be fun building yourself. However, with respect. LFS do the
donkey work for you. As does Mac Poorts in respect of dependencies. Sometimes
you have to plough through miles of documentation. When you start with a new
installed system how do you know what libraries etc you need to grab and build?
Just to build one little utility. Macports works for me, I’ve had my time
troubleshooting a failed build on Linux, I don’t want it on my Mac.

Different courses for different horses.

Thanks.

Gena
You wrote:
Now, a little background and explanation.
Most of the macports apps I've seen would take a whole 30 minutes or so to
port properly to the mac. But, because folks are too lazy to do a proper
port, instead they throw in an environment that messes with your paths,
environment shell settings, and library search paths, all to save themselves
from going through the code os some programs and changing library call here,
an include file there, and rewriting a line or two of c/c++ code to adhere to
newer gcc compiler versions. All of which needs to be done anyway eventually
if the program is going to continue running on newer systems as they upgrade
themselves with newer releases of other unix like operating systems.
The whole macports thing is a nice idea, but one of the poorest
implementations I've ever seen of a software emulation layer (which it really
isn't supposed to be, but it gets used as such anyway).
I've taken programs (such as pine and lynx) that were in the macports
library, and compiled osx native versions of the same programs with very
little modifications, and there's no reason it couldn't be done by the
maintainers of said packages if so desired. The problem is, they don't want
to do it, and most folks don't know enough to do the job, so we wind up with
a stop gap measure like macports, and for some unknown reason, it becomes the
defacto distribution for all things mac in the terminal world (go figure).
Sometimes, it's possible to take the same exact source code used by the
macports version, and recompile the source in native osx, and it works w/o
any changes at all. Admittedly, those occasions are few, but it just goes to
show how needless the macports app library truly is.

Now, with all that said, if you truly need the macports environment, then by
all means, use it. But I won't be caught with it on my system, not after it
truly hosed my system the last time I tried using it several years ago. I
now ignore, avoid, and actively discourage all things macports. If you have
the development tools installed, compiling your own versions of programs is
 generally as easy as:

 ./configure
 make
 make install

Of course, this is after changing to the folder containing the source code of
the program in question, and performing the final step as root, which is
usually done via the sudo command, but still, you get the point.

Now, I'm specifically talking about pure terminal apps here, not XWindows
apps, or those using quartz, or quicktime libs for graphical output. Those
have their own set of difficulties, and I don't generally bother with such
apps, so their nonfunctionality doesn't affect me. :)

But, to make a long rant short, if you wish to try an opensource app, simply
download the source, and have a whack at compiling it in terminal. Most of
the time it'll work without any changes, but if changes are necessary,
they're generally simple ones that an experienced unix coder can make in a
relatively short period of time. If you're not an experienced unix coder, it
will take you longer, but it can still be done with enough perseverance.
It's not complicated or difficult, merely time consuming looking up the
library versions, and tracking include files.
Of course, sometimes, it's a *lot* more complicated than that, but if that's
the case, then it won't make much difference if you're compiling for macports
or in native mode, since either one is equally likely not to work. :)
Anyway, that's my soapbox speech for the week, hope it helps someone.
And, if not, then at least forewarned is forearmed.

Hello All,

I'm struggling with iDatabase and wondered if anyone could offer a word. I did

Thanks.

Re: XLD under Mavericks

2013-11-02 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello Gordon,

I'm not sure if I understand you right. But a virtual drive is across a
network. Is this wireless or hard wired? Or have you effectively ripped the CD
to a virtual drive. Either way you have data activity that the is bottle
necking somewhere. If wireless, hardwire it. If you are thrashing the SSD by
lifting off the SSD into RAM and back on to SSD, poor disk.

 Hi all

Now that things have settled down under Mavericks, I thought I’d share one
more observation with the group. As many here do, I prefer to use XLD even
though it does not have an ideal user interface, to rip my Cd’s. This is
because it does a much much better job at ripping disks than iTunes does, and
I have yet to find a Mac alternative to XLD which has the same functionality.
For all its little quirks, XLD is still a marvellous application and let us
not forget that it is developed and distributed free of charge.

Anyway, to my point. XLD under the final public build of Mavericks is like
lightening on my MacBook Air, and that is using an Apple Superdrive as the
source. However, if I use a virtual CDRW drive, as is my preference, XLD is,
for some reason, quite a bit slower when it comes to the ripping of
uncompressed formats. This is strange actually, but true. I use
uncompressed FLAC as my preferred ripping format so as to preserve the
original quality. yet if I rip as compressed tracks, MP3 or M4A ACC+ for
example, it’s much faster. Has anybody else noticed this?

 Kind regards

Hello,

Actually, I think it hasn't been that stable before. My Mac Mini running ML
doesn't use the hostname in the prompt. But my Air does. However, both machines

Re: odd behaviour in Mavericks terminal

2013-10-27 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello,

Owch, that don't look good.

I don't know about how the OS X prompt is made up and what certain symbols
mean. I suspect they would be Unix standard. I have just tried to run as root
but I can't. On a Linux system the root user's prompt ends with a number sign.
However, here on OS X, a user promt ends with ~$. So may be your other prompt
is as the admin user. Anyway, such things are specified in either .bashrc
.profile .bash_profile. Either in your home directory or global system wide in
/etc.

I assume you have the box ticked that indicates that you want your windows
reopening on the next restart.

Or does the system have a serious error that requires admin privileges?

The system name used in the prompt is the names associated with each machine on
the network and in ML are set via the sharing options in system prefs.

Hello Dónal Zac,

Well I just picked up on the fact that there was a difference in the
punctuation in the prompts. I knew that punctuation represents the level of
user access on the system.

So why should something as important as the hostname change automatically?

I normally have 2 disks Mac HD which is the hard disk inside the iMac and an

Before trying to install Maverick I unplugged Mac Backup. I did that in case
the install of Maverick damaged the SuperDuper! backup I had just taken to

The choice of disks offered by Maverick was thus only Mac HD but this was

 true!

So I could not install Maverick.

I then plugged in Mac Backup so that Maverick install had the choice of two
disks. It did not like Mac Backup as it claimed that this had no guide
partition, and it did not like Mac HD as it still thought that this was used
 for time machine backups.

Any thoughts on what I should do? Should I perhaps plug Mac Backup in again
and retry the Maverick download and install?

 Best regards

Re: Having problems installing Maverick

2013-10-24 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello,

Didn't I read that the installer is removed after the installation. So I don't
see why you should need to redownload. Incidentally, When I do a cmd i on the
installer, the properties report that the Installation.app folder is
5.31Gigabytes. You are getting the hole file?

It wouldn't make sense to remove the installer until the install has been
completed.

found this post that might be useful I am not sure how to clean all the caches

Re: iPhone 5c versus 5s

Hello Paul,

Well the 5S has a 64bit processor. Which is taking mobile activity to a new
higher level. Whether it will make it easier for VO users, I'm not sure.
Certainly, benchmark tests suggest it is a lot faster. But if there are
benefits to us, I don't know. Certainly, it seems logical to me if you are
using apps like look tell, tap tap see, O C R apps etc. The faster processor
and better camera on the 5S will be a worthy long term investment. You need to
ask yourself. What do I currently use a phone for? What might I use a phone for
in the future?

Hello Dónal,

Thanks for your reply. I shall have to look at homebrew. However, disk space
isn't an issue so removal isn't a problem. Therefore, I haven't looked at it
thoroughly. But I understood Macports to install in /opt/local/…. and the
user's .profile adds the path varible. So I don't think that there would be any
dangling symlinks to be left on the system.

There's the issue of ejecting the CD when finished I haven't cracked to
satisfaction yet. We can use:

# drutil tray eject

But I'd rather abcde manages it as it does on GNU Linux.

Happy hacking!

Re: good alternative to iTunes for ripping CDs

2013-10-20 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello Lynnette,

In respect of this program. It is very easy. However, the more you want =
to customise the more it is involved. There is one file that you need to =
edit, if you wish to change anything from the defaults. It's as simple =
as typing abcde.

To Install, providing you have Macports installed:
# sudo port install abcde
Put your CD in the drive and type:
# abcde

This will put a full stop after the number of the track. It will create =
a directory of the artist's name. Inside that directory, will be a sub =
directory of the artist's name. Of the albumn. Being open source =
software the default format is vorbis ogg. It is in q3 mode. All of this =
is changeable within the abcde.conf file. It is very well commented =
file. It can be edited within TextEdit. By default is found in =
/opt/local/etc/abcde.conf.

It is better to leave that one alone and make a copy of it in your own =
home directory. I then copy that one to a file called rip-ogg and =
another called rip-mp3. I then edit both of those rip files with the =
settings I desire for ogg and mp3 files. When I come to rip a disk to =
mp3 I type:

# abcde -c rip-mp3

and for ogg:

# abcde -c rip-ogg.

I have kept the above very simple and such examples may need path =
directives. If you put your customised files in a different place to =
that you give the command.
=20
An example of the default might be from pwd (Present working directory)

Artist Name
inside that
Album Name
Inside that
01.Track_Name.ogg

The only problem I have found is ejecting the CD. I'm having to switch =
to the desktop and ejecting from there.

If you wish to view a abcde.conf which is similar to the default:

=
http://code.google.com/p/abcde/issues/attachmentText?id=3D1aid=3D-1098436=
14078946506name=3Dabcde.conftoken=3Da2f898087a0a3c9f37e4435b187e80c3

VO and Safari seem to take you through 69 numbered links before the =
text. I think it is a method of editing that copy and saving it locally.

Although you want a lovely GUI interface. I would suggest that you look at
abcde. Which stands for a better cd encoder. It's a very light weight set of
scripts run from the terminal. Via Mac Ports. I used to have a couple of the
customised scripts and run them according to the job I wanted to do. i.e.
cd2mp3 or cd2ogg.

 Morning folks,

At present I use XLD to rip my CDs as I avoid iTunes like the plague.
However one thing that irritates me about XLD is that you can't see the
progress and consequently cannot be certain the CD is ripping correctly.
So are there any good alternatives? I'd ideally like something which
enables ripping and storing of the converted tracks according to a naming
 convention.

 Thoughts welcome,

Hello,

Sorry, I don't understand. You install it by:

sudo port install abcde

Providing you have macports installed. I guess if you have a build env, you can
build from source.

It comes with a sample abcde.comf and you edit it as you wish. So by making
several copies with different configurations makes it easy to cater for
different situations.

Here's a sample of how the script is written.

# be selected as '--preset standard --another-option' etc.
LAMEOPTS='--preset extreme'

# Output type for MP3.
OUTPUTTYPE=mp3

# The cd ripping program to use. There are a few choices here: cdda2wav,
# dagrab, cddafs (Mac OS X only) and flac.
CDROMREADERSYNTAX=cdparanoia

# Give the location of the ripping program and pass any extra options:
CDPARANOIA=cdparanoia
CDPARANOIAOPTS=--never-skip=40

# Give the location of the CD identification program:
CDDISCID=cd-discid

# Give the base location here for the encoded music files.
OUTPUTDIR=$HOME/music/

# Decide here how you want the tracks labelled for a standard 'single-artist',
# multi-track encode and also for a multi-track, 'various-artist' encode:
OUTPUTFORMAT='${OUTPUT}/${ARTISTFILE}-${ALBUMFILE}/${TRACKNUM}.${TRACKFILE}'
VAOUTPUTFORMAT='${OUTPUT}/Various-${ALBUMFILE}/${TRACKNUM}.${ARTISTFILE}-${TRACKFILE}'

Re: Finding an unread email message

2013-09-10 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello Andy,

Have you thought of setting up a smart mailbox? I have set a smart mail box and
I keep my focus in the unread smart mailbox. I then have set up mail rules to
automatically put posts into specific folders. So if I have a new message from
my bank or from this list while they have the unread flag set they can be
accessed from the unread smart mailbox.

 TextEdit fulfills all these requirements.

You can also set paragraph reading on rota so just pressing up or down arrow

I see that most people prefer VM Ware Fusion and that you can use Virtual Box

Why does it appear that people would rather purchase VM software rather than

Thanks.

Re: OS X Mountain Lion: What is the Library folder?

2013-08-04 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello,

I don't know what it is you are trying to achieve. Yes the Library directory is
hidden. The instruction to access it via finder appears difficult and I don't
understand it. However, I can access my Library directory via the terminal.
From utilities run terminal. Then you can use the change directory command cd'
i.e.:

cd Library

Then press enter / return. You then will need to cd into the downcast folder. I
don't have downcast installed so I don't know what path you require.

You may want to unhide the Library directory which will make finder navigation
easier but has security issues. Or I guess that is why Apple decided to make it
hidden by default.

Good luck

Re: General Help With Numbers

2013-07-26 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello Carol Andy,

Numbers is a very powerful application. It depends upon what you wish to do
with it. I guess it would be useful if you stated what you would like to
achieve with it. I've just been using my 1 to 1 sessions on numbers. Did either
of you buy 1 to 1 training with your new Mac's?

If you open a new document. Numbers puts focus into the 1 table provided. You
can use the arrow keys to navigate and VO announces column and row coordinates.
In this respect I personally find it too verbose but knowing the VO utility.
Such verbosity can be controlled. Like pages, it has a very powerful pallet of
controls called an inspector. Achieved by option plus command plus (i). This is
a toggle i.e. hiding it and giving it focus. It reminds me of iTunes. When you
bring the inspector to the front. You have a series of radio buttons. So if you
wish to manipulate the rows or columns simply select the table radio button.
Then VO right arrow and explore the controls. When you have made your changes
just press option + cmd + i and you are returned to your document.

As I have an understanding of XL, other than the inspector. I don't feel
numbers is too different. A spread sheet is a spread sheet.

Re: General Help With Numbers

2013-07-26 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello Carol,

I'm guessing you needed to interact with the table. Numbers has layers. It
maybe that the file opened at the lowest level. On top of the outline and
toolbars is the layer with your table. If you stepped up to that level. You
would have been navigating around the cells of the table.

I'm sorry, there's no shortcut to learning a new screen reader. Each screen
reader can only guess what defaults suit most people. As our screen readers are
the most important method of access we all want to dive in with the apps. But
we gain far more by exploring our screen reader. Because when we open a new
app. We are armed with different screen reader moves to gain an understanding
of the controls and layout of the app. This concept of interacting with areas.
Or as I see it. Stepping up to the next level. Is quite Aileen to Windows users
in the beginning. But soon you will accommodate these differences. Or at least,
I'm getting there myself.

Good luck.

My main reason for wanting to use numbers is to deal with one spreadsheet
which I have to issue each week. This requires that I change a few columns
and occasionally have to change the header at the top of the sheet. Apart
from this, I don't any longer need to use spreadsheets in my life!

I therefore took an XL spreadsheet and loaded it directly into numbers hoping
that I can read it and make a few alterations. Well, with my little knowledge
of the Mac so far, I was not really able to get to read it at all. I found
all the settings, and went in and out and round and round about them, but I
didn't do much else! Once I can read the spreadsheet itself, presumably then
I may stand more chance of getting to edit it.

I guess I'll have to start at the beginning, but I don't want a long learning
curve just for this, so I'm hoping that I can bypass a good deal of what one
would have to learn if I needed to create spreadsheets from scratch.

Perhaps this gives you a better idea where I'm coming from. I basically
needed to move some of the computer equipment in my home and in order to do
this, I do need another way to produce my spreadsheets!

 Hello Gena, Sarah, and Others,

The default output file format for the say command is AIFF, which is the
Mac equivalent of WAVE, and using lower case still will not work. An AIFF
file is the default audio format you get on a Mac when you import an audio CD
with no compression. It may be the fact that by default we're running 64-bit
operating systems on the newer Intel Macs that impacts how some system
utilities that used to work in earlier versions of Mac OS X now operate.
(This might explain why the man page descriptions of the say command are
not necessarily accurate in this instance -- by default, earlier operating
systems ran under a 32-bit architecture.)

As for the error code, it shows up as an invalid property value under the
Apple Developer documents for Audio Unit Component Services..
 kAudioUnitErr_InvalidPropertyValue

This URL will probably wrap, but here's the source, and 10851 is listed under
the Result Codes. Also, this documents core audio codes under iOS. Apple is
in the process of merging functionality of OS X with iOS.
 http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/AudioUnit/Reference/AUComponentServicesReference/Reference/reference.html

One of the reasons that mp3 and wave formats might not now be legitimate
products of the say command, is that since Tiger (OS X 10.3, the first to
support VoiceOver) Apple started to completely overhaul their Core Audio
format. Many audio files actually have the structure of video files with
just the audio components. They also wanted the audio formats to be written
to new standards that were not limited by the older file format definitions.
MP3 file standards were established a long time ago, and nobody thought that
you'd want to listen to single files that were longer than 13 hours (e.g.
audiobooks). The system sound files all have .caf extensions (standing for
core audio file), and the time counters don't turn over at 2 billion
samples (basically, the maximum number that can be represented with a 32 bit
unsigned integer as a header keyword), so you could listen to audio content
with hundreds of hours (in theory) in a single file.

This is all part of future-proofing the media standards. I don't think the
error code is permissions related. You could always try using old voices
like fred. He does sound a bit like a duck quacking when you speed him up,
but remains pretty intelligible at fairly high speaking rates.

Most list users will probably prefer to create audio files of text using the
service menu option Add to iTunes as a spoken track. For Gena, since she is
comfortable with the Terminal command line, using the say command is a
reasonable choice, and has some advantages:
 1. She's transferring the file to an Audio CD, so the default AIFF format of
the say command makes sense. Using the service menu option would create an
AAC file in her iTunes library, which is smaller if she wants to store and
listen to it on her computer, but which would take additional processing by
her system to compress the file, and is not necessary, since when she writes
the file out as an Audio CD she'd have to expand it again, anyway.
 2. If she uses the Terminal command line she can create the file as a
background process. Again, this uses less of her system's resources, and
will minimize instances of busy messages.
 3. She can set the speaking rate as an argument in her command. If she were
using the service menu option to create a spoken track in iTunes she would
have to edit the file to insert an embedded command to set the speaking rate
at the start of the file. (It would have the format of two left brackets,
followed by the word rate, followed by a space, followed by a number like
300 -- written without the quotation marks -- followed by two right
 brackets.)

Embedded speech commands let you do things like alter pitch or volume, change
speaking rates, speak acronyms letter by letter, or speak phone numbers digit
by digit, and a whole lot more. You can test them out with the say command
in Terminal by embedding them into phrases enclosed within quotation marks.
Some of them, like speaking rate, can alternatively be set as a switch in
the command (e.g., in Sarah's example, this would be the - r 250).

 Here are a few examples:
Here's the command to get Fred instead of Alex, speaking fast at slightly
boosted volume, with the say command. Open up Terminal, paste the string
in, and press return to hear the results:
 say -v Fred [[rate 400

Re: Using the say command?

Hello,

Yes, coming from a linux background I need to get some information over to a
blind friend who doesn't like or use computers. Therefore, simply passing a
text file through say should give me an audio version of the text. Which can be
then burnt to disk and he can play it.

But I'm getting the error:

MTBEAudioUnitSoundOutput::PropagateProperty Error -10851
MTBEAudioUnitSoundOutput::PropagateProperty Error -10851

Hence my question. Should have mentioned using 2013 13 MacBook Pro running ML.

conversation and VO will read the latest in the conversation. If you have no
interest in that conversation, just hit the backspace and a large number of
messages can be deleted.

What's the quickest way of reading through messages? It looks like VO + J
from message list to message text for reading, then VO + J back to message
list to delete, move, copy etc, is about the best you can do.
I'm used to staying in message view and having commands to move to
next/previous messages, as well as taking action on each message without
alot of moving back and forth from this list to that.

Any keyboard shortcuts I should know about to make quick work of reading
 large volumes of messages?
Thanks, I'll take any and all suggestions that'll help.

Re: Using the say command?

2013-07-23 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello,

Well, it is an interesting one. Yes, if I had plunged straight in. It would
have worked. But as I like to start with the most simplest form then expand. I
crashed into this bug. I can't get the --file-format=WAVVE to work but m4af
does. That's interesting too. The inconsistency of the upper case and lower
case of the format options. I'll have to check to see if wave will work if I
enter it lower case. Usually man pages are accurate regarding such issues.

It all adds to the learning experience. So it looks like I'll be now exploring
how to write the file to a compact disk as an audio disk. To make it easy on
myself. I'll put all the documents in one file. Lucky for him, there's only
about 3 pages of text in total.

BTW: I understand that there is an Apple support document that expands error
codes. So I might spend a little time in seeking the meaning of error 10851.
It's beginning to should like it's a typical Unix problem of something not
being given the correct privileges or permissions.

Thanks to everyone who contributed.

 Hi Sarah,

I've seen queries to the Apple Discussion forums, reporting that error
message comes up even if you don't designate an output file for the say
command -- even if your command is:
 say hello
with no output file arguments. It seems to be a bug in the latest update of
Mountain Lion, and shows up when you use downloaded or updated voices as the
default voice or for the voice argument. In some cases when you switch to
another account the command works. But I think that in many of those cases
the reason may be that these are test accounts, where they only have the
standard voices available, or have not updated them.

 Hi Gena,

Sarah's answer should do what you want. You can do a short test file, and
Quick Look it (with the space bar). Just out of curiosity, are you getting
that error message only with voices that you downloaded and updated?
Because I think that's a bug that has been reported in 10.8.4 (not just
with the say command). Try using a different voice. I don't have any
problems with the say command. I think that if you had tried your test in
earlier versions of the OS, you wouldn't have gotten that error message.

Try this. Convert your file to text and then save it on your desk top.
Now copy the file to the clip board.

 1. launch terminal

 2 enter

say -f (paste in file name here) --progress -voice tom -r 250 -o
 filename.aiff

You can change the voice but I personally use tom but you can use samantha
as well or any of the other voices that are on your mac.

 Hello,

Yes, coming from a linux background I need to get some information over

passing a text file through say should give me an audio version of the

 But I'm getting the error:

 MTBEAudioUnitSoundOutput::PropagateProperty Error -10851
 MTBEAudioUnitSoundOutput::PropagateProperty Error -10851

Hence my question. Should have mentioned using 2013 13 MacBook Pro
 running ML.

The Braven 650 system is supposed to be far better than the Jawbone Jambox
and that product wasn't bad except for its absolutely dreadful hands free
speaker phone feature, the other fact that stopped me using it was its
Bluetooth compatibility, the Jambox isn't - as far as I know - compatible
with Bluetooth 4.0 devices such as the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy etc,
Bluetooth 4.0 provides superior bandwidth to previous Bluetooth versions and
it can be used without problems for dictation, Siri and the like.
