New Delhi police have arrested 63 suspects in the last two months working
and operating 26 call centers that were engaging in tech support scams,
posing as tech support staff at Microsoft, Google, Apple, and other major
tech companies. The raids on Delhi-based call centers have taken place
over the last two months, Microsoft said. Police first raided 10 call
centers and arrested 24 people in October, and then raided 16 other call
centers and made 39 more arrests this week.
>>>
Microsoft said its staff received over 7,000 victim reports associated
with the 16 call centers raided this week, from over 15 countries. Users
reported paying between $100 and $500 for unnecessary tech support
services and products. The raids resulted in the seizure of substantial
evidence including call scripts, live chats, voice call recordings and
customer records from tech support fraud operations, Microsoft said. The
Delhi police's crackdown on tech support call centers came after Microsoft
filed legal complaints earlier this year. Microsoft has been collecting
customer complaints about tech support scams since 2014, via its "Report a
 technical support scam" portal.

If you remember, by clicking on the “text” icon to the far left of the URL
address the text is presented in a readable format as below….

 PastedGraphic-4.png

Now I want to introduce another option with this text.

If you would like to read later while on public transit or other areas where
you would have NO internet connection simply highlight the text you wish to
save….right click on the highlighted text and you will be presented with
 several choices…..

 PastedGraphic-6.png

The last is “add to reading list” , click on this and the article is now
 saved for reading later….

Also, if you have time during your day either in transit or on break where
you would like the article to be “READ” to you note the second choice, “Add
to iTunes as a Spoken Track . Now the article, or articles will be saved to
iTunes. The written text is converted to audio on the import and you can
save to a folder of your choosing. Sync your iPhone, iPod, or iPad and you
can listen directly from the device or sync these with your car using it’s
 speakers.

Apple’s “Alex” is a very good digitized voice, it’s not like listening to
Barry White, but it will certainly do.

 Food for thought indeed.

 One final thought…..

Searching PDF files for pertinent information is not difficult, there are
programs available that allow very in-depth definitions to hone our
searches….but what if you not only wanted to “Search” for text but highlight
AND save text of great importance?

Even using Adobe’s powerful “Acrobat Pro”, highlighting the important text
within that program and exporting this info. to a separate document is most
difficult….AND Acrobat Pro is not available for the iPhone or iPad, which is
where I do most of my reading….

How do you convert an important PDF to the ePub format Apple uses in iBooks?

Enter “Wondershare”….an awesome program. This will convert a PDF file to
many formats, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Rich text, and ePUB!!

Now I can take a PDF file and have it usable inside iBooks where the
highlighting and saving of exactly what is needed is a breeze, exporting ONLY
the items I have highlighted to be then saved in whatever program I am
 using…..

Pretty cool stuff, right up there with World Peace!

Thought there might be one or two that would find these ideas useful….it
 usually works that way.

Nora,

It's a cord of many threads, we had a major problem in this country with the
politicians saying that we needed to move everyone into home ownership even if
they couldn't afford it. If that was the only part of the meltdown we would
have had some pain but not what the world ended up going through (think the
Savings and Loan Crisis of the late 80's and early 90's). The SL crisis
caused pain in localized areas, the government had to step in and help but it
was NOTHING like what happened in 2008 2009.

The difference were the CDO's, CDS's and Speed bots. (every one of these
completed by Quants)

The CDO's were the combining of thousands of home loans into a package with so
many tranches that each offering (tranch) in the unit represented so many
loans in the AAA class then additional loans were included with ratings all the
way down to the Subprime to complete the security that would be sold to the
public, state municipality retirement funds, mutual funds, etc.

This allowed Moody's, Standard Poor's, and Fitch rating agencies to bless the
offering with a rating almost as pure as a Federal Fund T bill. In reality the
rating agencies had NO idea what was in this mess, the quants were figuring it
all out.

Then the industry began offering CDS's or an insurance policy on these CDO
instruments, these could be purchased for around 1% of the value of the
obligation, dirt cheap.

Some folks began studying what these CDO's really were realized there was a
monumental problem, they began purchasing CDS's by the trainload. This game
went on for several years but when the Subprime began to crack it was finally
realized by all that it was a rouse and then the quants programs using the
speed bot trading (millions of shares traded in nanoseconds) and we had a
meltdown overnight.

There was a horrific contagion problem, Goldman Sachs alone had over a MILLION
counter-party transactions. When Buffett bought General Re there were a
quarter million counter-party transactions which he unwound immediately. The
same with Merrill, Morgan Stanley, Lehman, AGI, Bear Stearns, Royal Bank Of
Scotland, Deutsche Bank, and on and on and on this went around the globe.

When it began to unwind the possibilities of what would happen if these CDS
transactions could not be honored were unimaginable, The government had to step
in to prop up the system, few of us realize just how close we came to a true
financial holocaust. The shotgun marriages were just that, the Treasury, under
Hank Paulson, TOLD the firms what had to be done, the only major mistake was
the letting Lehman go down, that was more of a shock to the system than
Paulson, Bernanke or Tim Geithner (Tim at that time was head of the New York
Fed involved every step of the way in the 30 or 72 hr. marathons with no
sleep) had any idea would affect the markets so severely.

I personally feel that Paulson had it in for Richard Fuld (the head of Lehman)
as Paulson had previously been the head of Goldman and I think there was bad
blood between the two, maybe not, but the government saved everybody of any
importance by buying the toxic assets or arranging marriages and handing out
money like candy.. EXCEPT Lehman.

Anyway, it was the perfect storm all created by guys known as quants that
thought they had it all figured out, each step, every segment was their
brainchild and the world was their oyster.

I know there are as many political solutions to this as there are people but I
for one would not have wanted to see what life would be like now and for for
decades to come if this wasn't underpinned by the powers..now we have
another problem that no quant will be able to solve, it will be solved by
utilizing the energy solutions we have within our countrythis will get us
out of the humongous debt we have if we can only get our leaders to see the
small light still giving us hope.

I know, this isn't exactly MAC stuff but Harry ask a great question and it
really involves a large answer if you understand how important Quantitative
Analysts (Quants) have become in our everyday lives.

John

I'm asking because earlier this week, for the first time, I connected my Mac
while it was running to an Epson LCD on stand-by. The MacBook's resolution
automatically changed (as it should); same in reverse (put LCD on stand-by,
disconnected, resolution adjusted). Everything seemed happy. I have a 15
unibody MacBook Pro (OS 10.6.4). Just want to know if it's safe to do this,
or if I was risking zapping the MBP's logic board or something else scary…

I use various projectors with my Macbook Pro nearly every day. I never shut the
Mac down. It doesn't seem to hurt anything. Just to be sure I wasn't just being
lucky, I checked the manual that came with the machine. This is from page 70
concerning VGA connections.

1 Turn on the external display or projector.

2 Make sure the display cable is connected to the external projector or
display.

3 Connect the DVI to VGA adapter that came with your MacBook Pro to the VGA
connector of the external display or projector, and then connect the adapter to
your MacBook Pro. Your MacBook Pro automatically detects the external display.

4 Adjust the resolution on the external display by using the Displays pane of
System Preferences or the Displays icon in the menu bar, if necessary.

Apparently Apple assumes you should keep the Mac turned on.

I never turn my machines off. I have the hard drives set to sleep when
possible and the monitors blank out after 15 minutes. With desktop machines, I
just get up and walk away after I'm done working. With laptops, I usually close
the lid. The only time my machines are rebooted is when it's required by a
software or hardware upgrade, or (infrequently) by a crash.

The old advice that you should leave your machine on to do housekeeping during
the wee hours is no longer valid. With Snow Leopard, Apple switched from cron
to launchd for scheduled tasks. It is now smart enough to do the housekeeping
the next time it gets the chance, if it's sleeping or off during the normally
scheduled time.

I've been thinking about setting my machines to sleep overnight in order to
save a little energy, but I run overnight jobs often enough that this seems it
would be a nuisance because I'd always be turning it on and off.

digital. What you need to do is decide what size negatives and photos
you would like to scan, and make certain that the scanner you buy can
handle that size. Most include plates for 35mm slides and negatives,
some include 2 x 2 plates for negatives for old Rolliflex film and
other odd sizes.

Incidentally, as a bonus, my Cannon package included a basic OCR
program that works well enough for causal usage.

no. Many (most?) scanners work fine with both Mac OS and Windows

use an Epson Perfection 4990 scanner connected to a Macintosh G5.
It scans (converts to digital images) photos, slides, negatives,
text ... just about anything you can throw at it. The scanning
software that we use imports the image into Photoshop, from which
it can be altered to one's liking, saved, etc.

Simple answer delete files.

What files would cause this lots of pictures, videos and music files.

Burn them on DVD or transfer to an external hard drive.

I use WhatSize to tell me where the files that are taking up all the
room are.

Always upgrade your hard drive in your computer to a bigger size and
keep a back up copy.

Nora-
I came across these programs mentioned in a column; I'll just cut
paste them in hopes that the links to the programs survives and you
can find them using the links.
It mentioned...

antivirus software, you have several choices. ClamXav is free.
Symantec offers Norton AntiVirus 11 for $50 a year. You can get one
year of avast! antivirus Mac Edition for $40.

You can get anti-spyware programs as well. Check out Internet Cleanup
4.0 from Smith Micro for $30. And MacScan 2.5 from SecureMac goes
for $25. Intego offers an Internet security suite that, among other
things, includes anti-spyware. It is called NetBarrier X4 and sells
for $70.

As far a defrag-ing a Mac, that topic has surfaced here before and I
seem to remember some disagreement about whether a mac needs it.
Perhaps someone with more knownledge can respond.

Re: [MacGroup] multiple startup partitions

On Jan 27, 2008, at 12:15 PM, Bill Rising wrote:

Hey Folks,

I got a brand-spanking new 233GB hard drive [1] for my laptop,
partitioned into two pieces:

178GB for my main stuff w/ Leopard as the OS
55GB w/ Tiger as the OS (for testing stuff my wife might use on
her laptop).

Both partitions were populated by using the new version of Carbon
Copy Cloner [2] to move files from other external drives which
start up just fine under the proper operating system. [3]

For some reason, even if I pick the Tiger partition as the startup
drive, the computer still starts up Leopard. It starts, boings, the
grey screen comes up, goes to black immediately (before the apple
logo shows) and then comes up again, as though it runs into
troubles trying to start Tiger. Leopard then starts up.

If I start up with the option key held down, the only choice for an
operating system is Leopard.

In the past, there used to be limitations as to how far into the
disk a startup partition could be placed. Though I can't find any
references any more, I'm wondering if this could be the problem. In
fact, when googling, I couldn't find anything which would help,
though my googling skills are not the best.

Any ideas?

Bill

[1] A Western Digital '250GB' disk. It arrived unformatted; I
formatted using the disk utility from Leopard.

[2] I used this instead of SuperDuper!, because it gives more
flexibility in what gets copied. I copied everything from an
external disk except some extra folders which held backup
information. When things didn't quite work, I recopied the System
folder to no avail.

[3] Each external drive has a single partition.

Not counting paid up-dates, I have had to buy three (3) full, legal

That is one reason that I like to have all of my mailing list

I can delete it from my machine if I want, and still fire up a web
browser (from any machine) and log into gmail and search and find
 everything.

With over 2 gigabytes of storage, i never need to delete any mail
 messages from online.
and with certain free programs, I can use gmail to store (non-
confidential) documents and such online so that I can access them
anywhere I can find an internet connection.

Let me know if anyone needs a gmail invite (is gmail even still
invite only?) as I have tons of them.
