Vlc and eye tv question once again.

2009-04-05 Thread Jesper Holten
Sorry the first posting was without the text intended but here we go again!

Hi all.
Apple states that voiceover supports vlc player, and I recall that vlc player
has been discussed some time ago on this list.
Which versions of vlc player do work with voiceover?

Another question is if any of you have got any experience with Eye tv 3
together with voiceover?
I would be most greatful if any of you have any inputs regarding these
questions.
Best wishes,
Jesper.

Introduction to Smart Playlists in iTunes (long)

2009-04-05 Thread Esther

Hi All,

I'm starting a new thread about smart playlists, but this post is also
in reply to some recent questions about how to efficiently manage
music on devices like the new iPod Shuffle 3G and the iPod Nano 4G.
This is a particularly useful way to select content from a large music
library without having to constantly edit playlists by hand.

Overview

Smart playlists work like regular playlists, but they allow you to
select content by using rules instead of by selecting individual
tracks. For example, to create a playlist consisting of all tracks in
an album, instead of adding tracks one by one to a regular playlist,
or even by using the more efficient means of toggling on the file
browser (Command-B), selecting an entry from the Album column, and
using the "New Playlist from Selection" (Command-Shift-N) shortcut to
make a regular playlist of the tracks in an album, you could make a
smart playlist (Command-Option-N) and use a rule like:
where you set the first two entries of your rule from
pop up buttons to "Album" and "'is", and then type in the name of the
album in a text field. This technique is most powerful when you're
working with multiple albums, artists, etc. and/or multiple rules.
You might have a multi-volume set where the title sometimes has the
name of the series first, and sometimes the name of the individual
album. Then your rule might be: and then "The
Bootleg Series" for the text entry. This would simultaneously select
albums like "No Direction Home: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 7" and "The
Bootleg Series, Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert at Philharmonic
Hall".
You can add a rule to exclude certain tracks. If one of the album
tracks is a music video version that I don't want transferred to my
iPod Shuffle, the second rule might be:
, where I type the word "video" into a text field and set pop
up buttons for the first two conditions.

Smart playlist rules aren't limited to the information assigned to
tags; you can use them to make up playlists according to your
listening habits and preferences. If you rate your music you can apply
rules to only include tracks above a certain star rating. You can
assign rules according to the number of times you've listened to a
track -- to make a favorite tracks playlist. For audiobooks you can
play from a smart playlist and use it to keep your place in the book.
A smart playlist with rules liketo
select the audiobook, and <0> can keep the latest
unplayed track at the top of the playlist and roll off the tracks that
you've listened to as their play count increases and they no longer
match the rule for inclusion in the smart playlist. You can also add
rules based on when you last listened to a track such as
<2> to ensure a new flow of music
listening. Most, but not all, of the iTunes view options (Command-J
to show the menu) can be used to assign smart playlist rules. In
addition, you can build smart playlists out of other playlists with
rules like , where the named
playlist can be either a regular or smart playlist (and can be chosen
from a pop up menu).

Two other features of smart playlists make them particularly useful
for setting up your music on a Nano or iPod Shuffle 3G: you can limit
the size, time length, or number of items in the smart playlist, and
tell iTunes how you want to achieve this in case your smart playlist
is too large, and you can use the "live updating" feature to
dynamically control the contents of your smart playlist. The first
feature means that you can set up a transfer playlist with a condition
like <3.2> and
if the smart playlist that results from applying your rules is larger
than 3.2 GB, it will be cut down in size by giving preference to the
least recently played tracks. Or, you could created a workout
playlist, that lasts exactly 40 minutes for your gym session ( <40> ), or a travel/commuting
playlist that chooses a random sampling of podcasts that fit into your
trip ( <1> ). The second,
dynamical updating, feature means that your rules will continue to be
applied on the iPod, even when you're not connected to your computer.
If you make a smart list containing music that where it's more than 2
months since the track was played and you have the box for live
updating checked, playing a track on your iPod will immediately remove
it from that playlist.

Your smart playlists can be used either as a convenient way to
transfer music to the iPod, or a way to make playlists for playing.
With the Nano 4G, you might want to transfer music with a smart
playlist, to keep sizes down below the maximum, but then you might
want to navigate the menus to play songs by album or artist. With the
iPod Shuffle 3G, you have to navigate by playlist, so you want to use
these not just for transferring music, but also as the main way to
play your music.

Re: Twitter client

2009-04-05 Thread Jessi Rathwell

there's a tweets table. if you interact with that, you'll see all the
incoming messages plus messages that you send. if you go into
settings, you can control exactly which messages you see. sometimes
it's a bit strange and you have to interact with the table several
times, but it usually only takes a couple times before you can arrow
through the messages. or maybe it's just me that's having the strange
multiple interaction problem. when you arrow through, after
interacting, just use the arrows not VO arrows.

Re: Huge Problem with Keys

2009-04-05 Thread Scott Howell

Ah yeah ALex, she has until December 2009 to get it done and in fact
if it was a little past that, I am sure Apple would still cover it,
but not much beyond 30 days I'm sure. So, yep, get it done before
December and in fact, sooner than later is best.

You know this as others has pointed out makes little sense. As a
matter of fact, there is a possibility Apple will come out with a
netbook in the next year or so. If they do, it will be by far better
than any netbook out there. I heard a podcast where this fellow was
running Linux as a VM on his XP Home netbook and it was painful to
listen too. It was slow and he says he will be putting Leopard on it
soon and I wouldn't have said that for all the world to hear. :) I

 No
need to worry about parallel cables and adapters just use a serial
cable with a null modem adapter or a null modem cable. Se the Romeo
 to
communicate via serial and you should be set to go.

Re: Re_ITunes Un-resolved...

2009-04-05 Thread Alex Jurgensen

Hi,

Apple Canada is no longer at there old number. This was really
frustrating for me. They have joined forces with Apple US and have way
better support now. It is just the way the calls are routed. You still
can get the Canada Call Center or the American one, depending on who
is busier. The new number is the one on the site. 1-800-myapple or
1-800692-7753.

Thanks,
Alex,

Re: Installing Leopard on a Netbook

2009-04-05 Thread Alex Jurgensen

Hi,

I may buy one for my parents. How cheap can I get one to run Linux. I
want Ubuntu so that I can administer it from the comfort of my Mac and
Voiceover. Of course I'd build it from scratch. Anyone looking for a
Mac Mini, the tutorial will be out on how to control your TV with it.

Thanks,

Hi,

Not true. If you bought Apple Care it is a three year warenty from the
time of purchase of the Mac. AC extends the already one year support
to three years adding two years to it.

 1. Boot off the DVD

Then you should be abel to proceed on your own.

Re: Romeo 50 and Louis with Duxberry

Hi,
Greg.

Even the SErial to Parallel adapter won't work. My VD may let me
configure it to do serial if I can proove that I can configure the
desktop which runs Duxbury to work easily with serial as I know the
desktop does indeed have a serial terminal on it.

Thanks,

 Hello,

First, if you've got the Keyspan USB device, you really just need
 a 9
pin serial cable and most importantly, a null-modem adaptor. The
adaptor can be purchased at a Radio Shack along with the serial
 cable.
Don't worry, it is super cheap. If you want cheaper, find a local
computer junk retailer, they for sure have serial cables. Be
 careful
about the null-modem adaptor though, they are usually not labeled
 well.

On your Romeo 50, consult the manual to choose the correct menu.
 You
want the PC menu, ignore their Mac instructions. They are about a
decade out of date at this point, and refer to Macs with older
 built-
in serial and Mac OS 9 or earlier. The PC menu works fine, you'll
 want
to use the default communication settings.

Now, use your favorite program to generate your braille file. I
 like
Louis, but at the end of generating, don't send the file to the
embosser direct. You have that option, but you'll end up with
 braille
that shoots out about two pages of blank paper at the end. Instead,
send the file over to the embosser yourself. Open the Terminal and
 type the following:

cat ~/Documents/yourdoc.brl > /dev/cu.Ke (press tab to finish
 device
 selection)

I don't know the device name exactly, thus why I told you to do /
 dev/
cu.K (capitol K I believe). Your device will fill out, press
 return.

Your embosser should come to life right away. If not, I had a real
nasty time configuring one of these, but I finally did get it to
 work.
The crazy part is that I helped a friend who's son is blind, and
 she
embosses many things for school that he needs. It took us weeks to
figure it out, and in the end, the correct USB to serial device and
espacially the null-modem adaptor made the difference. You really
 do
need the null-modem adaptor, you honestly can't get away with
 anything
else. I find it lame that the USB device is incapable of
 reassigning
and crossing its own internal pins on the fly, but that's what
 makes
the market for adaptors I guess.

If all else fails, Skype is pretty cool, maybe I could help you
 out.
I'd connect you with the one other person I know who has a Romeo
 50,
but since I set it up for her, she wouldn't be much help.

 Good luck,
 Ryan

2009-04-05 Thread Ryan Dour

Hello,

AppleCare has a local German number. Visit Apple's support website,
and you will find a local AppleCare number for Germany. In Europe it
is less common to get a service plan, as many turn out to be plans
that underdeliver. But, for anyone that has used AppleCare, it is
really worth it.

Re_ITunes Un-resolved...

2009-04-05 Thread Mike

Hi Esther and list:

This mess started due to my mis_interpidation of an iTunes feature of
the iTunes DJ option. Once I enabled the iTunes Dj and began playing
around the probs occured.
The funny thing is, the removal of all the releated key list files,
later the iTunes application + a re_install of the app should have
fixed it.
My complete Leopard re_build was the last resourt and that didn't fix
things either.
So a call to Apple Canada may not be a bad root to take. I don't even
see a section of the preferences where I could turn off the dj
function, just to not show it. LOL
I'm even thinking that I could have allot of currupted audio, perhaps
even infected and iTunes might be protecting, or the OX, it self.
Know my library isn't pointing to an external source and no mod keys
have been used to launch the ap. So I probably will give the Orchard a
call, LOL and see what the tell me. I do have the 3 year apple care
program and there is a certified apple repair shop here in St. John's
NL.
Will certainly advise the list because this might be a serious bug
that just haven't popped up yet for others.

Cheers:

I think the reason that Mike downloaded version 8.1 of iTunes was
because of the iTunes DJ feature. There was some confusion about
this, because iTunes DJ is supposed to let people who are running
Apple's Remote app for the iPhone or iPod Touch to send in selections
for the next tracks to be played at parties, I believe that Mike was
thinking about using the Infrared Apple Remote to control iTunes
playback. That's certainly possible, and you can queue up tracks to
be played on the fly using PartyShuffle, but this is a different setup
from iTunes DJ. You would need to use the Remote App on the iPhone to
(visually) select and navigate entries on the iTunes library. I think
the idea is that guests with iPhones running the Apple Remote app
could be allowed to browse the library's music on their iPhone and
send in requests for the next tracks to play. This is only based on
the descriptions I've read.

HTH

Cheers,

Esther

I remember a whole bunch of people were complaining about this version

download the prior version. That's what I did and it works much much

Mike is in Germany, and is not located anywhere near the one Apple
Store that opened (in Munich). I did wonder about how he was
launching iTunes since he's a new Mac user. Based on his post, it
sounded as though he didn't have problems starting iTunes 8.1 until he
added the DJ option, but I couldn't tell whether this was an issue
arising from the way he started iTunes, the update to iTunes 8.1, or
his configuration -- e.g. if he's trying to store all his music on an
external hard drive but hasn't set up any information about that in
his preferences. (That would certainly make iTunes ask him what
library to use, if it can't find anything on his local hard drive.)
There's very different advice on what to try based on what was or was
not working before. This requires some semi-interactive posts to the
list to troubleshoot. (Re-installing the OS and iTunes 8.1 seems
rather extreme; I expected him to come back with more questions if the
suggestions didn't work.) I'm a little hampered in this since I
haven't upgraded to iTunes 8.1.

>>

>>

I think this is more work than sorting iTunes, but here's a link to
VersionTracker for Stuffit Expander:

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/182

This points to the page for Stuffit Expander 13.0.2 (2008-11-06).
There's a new (different) page for 13.0.3 (2009-01-06) but as far as I
can tell from the comments it still points to the download for version
13.0.2. Plus, it doesn't give you the download, but first takes you
to the Smith-Micro page where you fill out your Name, Address, etc.
(In the past, other users have said this has been a major source of
unwanted email and spamming advertisements, so I've never used this
route myself). The link I've given will allow you to directly
download Stuffit Expander (without giving your contact information).
(I actually prefer Stuffit Expander version 12, which doesn't have an
installer, but the Allume FTP site for that (which still worked in
December) is no longer active, and you have to go through the web
pages of the present company that acquired the product, Smith-Micro.

The only reason for pointing you to Stuffit Expander is that SITX
(with the "X" at the end) is a proprietary format that requires
Stuffit. Otherwise, nearly everything you would use Stuffit for is
better handled by "the Unarchiver" at:

http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver.html

This includes regular .sit (Stuffit) files and .rar files, as well as
many other formats that Stuffit does not support. As I said, I would
try (many) other things before trying to install win media player, but
I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Esther

Hello,

Why not try taking your Mac to an Apple Store and let a Genius try to
figure out why iTunes is misbehaving for you? That, or actually try
calling Apple if you're covered with the AppleCare Protection Program.
If iTunes is asking for a library, you may be holding down a modifier

Re: Romeo 50 and Louis with Duxberry

2009-04-05 Thread Greg Kearney

Unfortunately you will not get the embosser to work with a mac without
the ability to configure it to work with serial communications. Mac
have never supported Parallel interfaces even in the pre OS X days.
The Romeo 50 can only work on one interface at a time.

The only solution that even might work, and I have never tried it is
to find the very rare and very expensive Bluetooth to Parallel adapter
and connect it to the Romeo 50 and then direct your output to the
Mac's Bluetooth serial port which would have to be paired to the
adapter. I have never tried this because I don't have one of the
adapters and it is so much simpler to use serial cables.

Sorry I can not be any more help.

Not anymore.

There are a number of different brands now making netbook devices.

MSI is one of the better ones.

a net book is in the size range of 7 to 10 inch screen size.

Very small and light. Also tending to have limitted system resources
the first ones came out with 4gig of flash memory as the hd / drive for

Very goodmachine if you run linux. Not great for windows.
