I am sorry to say that you're mistaken. I've searched on boath the iPod and
the computer just in case of typing error, and no go, neither searching for
chess wise, chess-wise or Marcel Nijman braught any desirable results.

I think resorting to my technicaly non legal american account is the thing
to do in this case.

If you having difficulty locating the games, try searching for Marcel Nijman
, which is the developer's name. He informed me that he checked since
someone else was having trouble locating them and he said they are available
in the South African store.

Colin,

I have no idea, but it is unlikely. Converting an iOS app to run on the
Mac platform is not impossible perhaps, but would not be trivial by any
stretch since your talking about a complete change to the interface as far
as how you would interact with it. In other words, going from a
touch-screen to a keyboard or other input method. There is an accessible
chess app on the Mac in the APplications folder. You can choose to have
the application speak the moves of the computer.

The right or wrong is stated in the top message bar. I will check this

these. You would not know this necessarily, but Marcel took a game that
was not completely accessible and especially with regard to the game
board and made it fully accessible (game board primarily) within two
weeks or so. So, there will be issues yet and any feedback is
appreciated and please share with Marcel, via this list, or send
directly to me, and I will see your issues are presented. Marcel has
done something that no one else has and I tried working with another
developer of a chess app that cost twice what Chess-Wise Pro costs and
he has yet to make his game accessible. Marcel's enthusiasm and interest
in making his games accessible speaks volumes about him and his
commitment to a quality experience. Now so I don't sound like a

support his efforts and is appreciated. :)

It is 108 gigs. I watn it to be about 70 gigs. I don't need all that space as

Quoting from their web page "gparted is developed on Linux using

So, it is possible that gparted my be accessible using a linux screen

Re: iWOrk: VoiceOver Falls Short

2011-02-04 Thread f10r14n
Hello y' all,

As a matter of fact, I agree with both sides on some account. Before
you shoot me for it let me explain.
First, Kevin's side. He has been trying to transition to the mac, for
example for his school needs I think. For this, he has tried and
failed to do the tasks he could do on Windows. Of course this could be
due to infamiliarity with the mac system, however Mac is supposed to
be intuitive and easy to use. Then, why is it so hard to do what he is
trying to do?
Look, I understand that knowing a system is required before you can
actually claim it doesn't work the right way, but I think that six
months is a lot of time to learn voiceOver and I happen to know he has
been at this for hours before even considering doing the episode.
The way I see it on this thread is that he is requesting aid in fixing
his supposed inexperience , but all he gets back is flames about him
critisizing voiceOver without knowing it. If there's something that
scares away a newbie, it is that imnsho.

If i knew how to fix these issues, I would write them up. But
apparently noone here knows a foolproof solution to the issues
described both above and in the podcast. If i am wrong kindly correct
me but this is my current view on the situation.

Regards,
Florian

If you having difficulty locating the games, try searching for Marcel Nijman ,
which is the developer's name. He informed me that he checked since someone
else was having trouble locating them and he said they are available in the
South African store.

Re: router issues...

2011-02-04 Thread Ed Worrell
Thanks Scott.

Those where the first things that I tried. I am connected and airport is on. I
just can't see the router or anything else on the network. I have a hard drive
hooked up to the router and now I can't use the drive. The wierd thing is my
wifes computer can't see my laptop either. I am using a mac book pro if that
helps. Is there some setting that I am missing that I need to change to be seen
on the netork. I have sharing turned on and a public folder set to be visible.

So I am not sure what the issue is.

Thanks again ED

Re: router issues...

2011-02-04 Thread Scott Granados
Ed, make sure your airport device is turned on.

Then use the list of networks and make sure you can pick up your SSID or
network name, it should appear in the list.

If you see this network pick it and press enter. If you're required you'll
have to enter your password also known as a key.

If the key is already known or the router is insecure you will not be prompted.
If you don't see your network listed then plug in directly to the router with
a cable and see if that works. Use the process of illimination to rule out
issues.

Thanks
Scott

Colin,

I have no idea, but it is unlikely. Converting an iOS app to run on the Mac
platform is not impossible perhaps, but would not be trivial by any stretch
since your talking about a complete change to the interface as far as how
you would interact with it. In other words, going from a touch-screen to a
keyboard or other input method. There is an accessible chess app on the Mac
in the APplications folder. You can choose to have the application speak the

Hi Kevin,

I spent some time listening to your suggested podcast and am a little
annoyed with your approach and attitude presented within it. While your
comments below suggest a welcomeness to constructive comments and/or
workarounds, your tone within the podcast itself is very critical of VO.
Much of this criticism, in my opinion, is due to a lack of experience with
the product itself. You and your partner appear well versed in the use of
JAWS and are using that wealth of experience to attempt a comparison with
a product that you do not have the same familiarity with. Therefore, your
conclusions seem rather tilted.

Now, I do appreciate your efforts in providing the podcast episodes, as
such comparisons are useful. Simply to eliminate the judgemental comments
would make them more palatable from my prospective. As I've noticed from
much of the suggestions supplied by Anne Robertson, much of what you
criticized with respect to VO is actually doable. I might also add, that
many of these are not necessarily "workarounds", but really just a
different way of approaching things. For the most part, we all have to
realize that VO and the MacOS is not Windows, nor do I want it to be, so
if we must do things a little differently, then so be it.

Now for some specifics:

• In Numbers, you made fun of Numbers saying "B4" with the word "Cell" and
quipped about not needing to hear the word "Cell" since you knew that you
were in a spreadsheet. You also mentioned that there was no way that you
could stop it from saying the word "Cell". In this case, you are
inaccurate, simply set your default verbosity to "Low" and VO will not say
the word "Cell" anymore.

I will readily admit that JAWS handles MS products very well and I'm not
trying to say that VO handles iWork just as well, my objections are with
your perceived expertise with VO during the comparison and your
over-critical tone. Your obvious comfort level with JAWS allows for the
ease of use whereas that same level of comfort is not apparent for VO.
These inconsistencies are brought home considerably when I read the
comments/suggestions from Anne.

Maybe, instead of making such judgements, you could preface your comments
with phrases like, "In my experience with VO thus far", or " I haven't
figured out how to do whatever yet, but there may be someone who's more
familiar than me with it". I feel that this would give your podcast a
more professional tone and consequently, add validity to it. In it's
current state, I would not be inclined to listen to further episodes.

Just my thoughts.

Re: Numbers still speaking last column

2011-02-04 Thread John André Netland
Hi,

Did you try the menu option in Numbers where you can check/uncheck the first
column to be a header column? I think I mentioned that in a previous message.
VO will always announce the vertical and horizontal header column/row, unless
you make a spreadsheet that does not have headers. You may also try the setting
in the VoiceOver Utility app/verbocity/announcements for heading feedback when
navigating tables.

Take care,
John André

Hi Marc.

I'm sorry if this mail has been answered before. When this happens, you can
choose the caller window by bringing up the window chooser in the skype window.
When you get a call, a new window pops up and this window won't always be at
the front which means it's hidden behind the Skype main window. Therefore you
can find it using the window chooser.
Hope that helps and explain why it doesn't work all the time.

Numbers still speaking last column

2011-02-04 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi all,

Is there any way to get Numbers to stop speaking the first column every time
i'm attempting to read the spread sheet? I did what Ann suggested, and it still
reads the balance in the first column along with the rest of the information. I
also set the verbosity to low and this didn't help either. I know there is a
way to do this I must be missing it. Can anyone help? THank you in advance for
any assistance you can provide.

Sincerely,
Allison

Re: VO accessible Chess, Checkers, Draughts and Xaingqi games released for iPhone, iPad & iTouch

2011-02-04 Thread Colin M
Hi Scott!
I knew about the chess on the Mac!
It's the other games I was interested in!
Ok making them keyboard friendly might be hard but those using track pads
either on there mbp's or magic track pads could use the same gestures as the I
pad!
Or have I got that wrong!
I know that some people would like it keyboard friendly as well and I really do
not know how hard it is to reprogram software, but there is already somethings
you can do only with a track pad and not on the keyboard!
And I do not know how many people would like mbp's Imac versions but the track
pad might be the way to go!
I did say if possible! :]
All the best!

when in the edit box of the conversation that you want to add someone too
just press command shift and letter A, this will bring up the same dialog from

her try turning off Zoom and using the method you described as well. Thank you
so much for your response.

Best,

Re: VO accessible Chess, Checkers, Draughts and Xaingqi games released for iPhone, iPad & iTouch

2011-02-04 Thread Scott Howell
Colin,

I have no idea, but it is unlikely. Converting an iOS app to run on the Mac
platform is not impossible perhaps, but would not be trivial by any stretch
since your talking about a complete change to the interface as far as how you
would interact with it. In other words, going from a touch-screen to a keyboard
or other input method. There is an accessible chess app on the Mac in the
APplications folder. You can choose to have the application speak the moves of
the computer.

 Greetings All,

Today Apple approved and released the accessible versions of Marcel
Nijman's Chess-wise Apps! In addition, Marcel modified three of his other
game apps to make them VO accessible. Those Apps are: Checker-wise,
Draughts-wise and Xiangqi-wise. These apps are all now available worldwide
in the App Store and in the following languages: English, Spanish,
Russian, German and Dutch. Marcel hopes to add Polish, Czech and French
translations in the next update. The viphone mailing list, Scott Howell
and Geoff Waller in particular, were instrumental in providing input,
feedback and other information to Marcel during this process.

Each of these four Apps is a universal App, which means they will run
correctly on the iPhone, iTouch and iPad. WHile there is a free version of
the Chess-wise App, I would urge you to consider purchasing the Pro
version to support Marcel's work. The price is only US $2.99 for the Chess
and Checker Apps, and only US $1.99 for the Draughts and Xiangqi Apps. I
believe Marcel is the kind of developer who deserves our support one
 hundred percent.

I've not tried the 3 other games yet, but I can tell you the Chessboard
and Chess pieces are now recognized and read aloud by VO. You can navigate
the board using a one-finger swipe, or you can just slide one finger
around the board and VO will announce the coordinates and the name of a
piece if one occupies that square. To make a move, use one finger to
locate the piece you want to move, then double-tap. VO will announce
"Selected." Now use one finger again to locate the destination square and
double-tap again. Please note that this is considered a first version of
this game in it's accessible form. While Marcel has made the heart of the
App accessible, it is a very feature-rich App which will require
additional coding to make it fully accessible. Marcel has asked that those
of us who use the Apps provide feedback to him so he can continue to
refine and update the accessibility features.

Hi Scott!
Could Marcel possibly make those Imac apps as well?
Do not want to cause them more headaches but would be interested if at all
possible!

Re: VO accessible Chess, Checkers, Draughts and Xaingqi games released for iPhone, iPad & iTouch

2011-02-04 Thread Scott Howell
Hi Jim,

ALthough several of us have been working with Marcel, I have not had a chance
to really dig into the games myself, although I did purchase them all. :) I
understand the exercises is for player 2 to win in one move. The right or wrong
is stated in the top message bar. I will check this out, but Marcel is aware of
an issue or two and will be working on these. You would not know this
necessarily, but Marcel took a game that was not completely accessible and
especially with regard to the game board and made it fully accessible (game
board primarily) within two weeks or so. So, there will be issues yet and any
feedback is appreciated and please share with Marcel, via this list, or send
directly to me, and I will see your issues are presented. Marcel has done
something that no one else has and I tried working with another developer of a
chess app that cost twice what Chess-Wise Pro costs and he has yet to make his
game accessible. Marcel's enthusiasm and interest in making his games
accessible speaks volumes about him and his commitment to a quality
experience. Now so I don't sound like a salesman, I did purchase these games, I
got no free codes or any such thing. However, purchasing any or all of his
accessible games will support his efforts and is appreciated. :)

Thanks,
Scott
