Flash card software for Mac?
Hi, When I was on Windows, I had an awesome piece of software called Supermemo (www.supermemo.com). It was a program that worked kind of like flashcards. Basically you had questions and answers, and you'd rate yourself on how fast you could answer it. It used spaced repetition, so that the ones you got right began to appear less and less frequently, so that you had to work on the harder ones more. I'm not happy that this isn't available for Mac. Or at least, not Mac OS X; it is only available for 9, somehow. So, does anyone know of any similar program? I'd prefer one definitely with spaced repetition if possible, but anything will work. I'm working on learning Spanish better, so this would really be useful right now. Thanks, Brandon -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. adium not working!
Hi all I thought adium was supposed to be accessible to voiceover? After interacting with the toolbar i cannot change my status (online, offline etc) and then when i go into my contact list I cant open a chat conversation. It keeps telling me that its empty. I am sure that i have used adium with voiceover before and it has worked. Can anyone help with this please? Re: reading epub-files on the mac with itext express
What an interesting solution. Is there a paid application for reading epub files on the Mac? There seems to be a menu-item in text express to show a bookmarkslist. I don't know if this are the real bookmarks and also, I see no way to jump toe the text in the file on the place of the bookmark. preview for files?
Hi, Can somebody refresh my memory about how to turn off the feature where you can preview your files as you have them highlighted, please? Somehow, I've managed to turn this on somewhere on my mac, and now I can't figure out how to turn it off! This isn't a big deal, except that when I am going down through a list of mp3 files, they start playing as I go over them! Quite annoying when you're trying to rename them, move them, etc! I've already had a look through the menu bar and system prefs with no luck, but maybe I'm just missing it somehow.. thanks! Introduction a Question
Hello All, My name is CJ I live in Rancho Sahuarita, just outside of Tucson in sunny dry southern Arizona. I have recently begun my switch to a Macbook Pro VoiceOver, after using JAWS on DOS Windows for more than 20-years. I'm enjoying the novelty of Apple's approach to providing accessibility to visually impaired users, with out charging them an arm a leg for the privilege of using their computers. I look forward to reading the postings learning from with you as we go. All of that being said, I'm wondering what some of you are using for bible software on the Mac? I've downloaded the newest version of MacSword--now called Eloquent--but, can't seem to access the bible portion of the screen. I've looked @ tutorials on the I Can Use This Thing web site. However, they all seem to be for earlier versions of the software. Any thoughts advice would be greatly appreciated. Help me get started running Windows on a Mac
Given the accessibility issues with Flash content, Firefox, and the large amount of things I still have on my PC, I've decided to go ahead and try VMWare Fusion on my MacBook Air. However, I'd like to use Windows 7 since my current PC has vista and I don't want to put that on my Mac. I'm leaning toward buying Windows 7 professional due to features like XP mode and Virtual Desktop, but I have a couple of questions. Firstly, can I just download it and use it with VMWare or do I need the actual CD? Also, is there anything I will need to do in order to get JAWS working with it? I want to do this on my own and make it as quick and painless as possible. I'd also like to use my scanner/printer with Kurtzweil. Is there anything special I will need to do for this? Thanks in advance. Eric -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. To post to this group, send email to macvisionaries@googlegroups.com. question about backing up
HI All, Last week I got an external hard drive. I was able to perform the first backup just fine. Now I want to perform another backup since it has been a week. I am not able to do this though. I connected the external drive to my mac and then opened timeMachine. Nothing happened when I opened time-machine. What am I doing wrong? any help would be appreciated. Re: question about backing up
Others might have a different and better method of starting Time Machine backups manually, but I have it so the Time menu will appear in the status bar. If you have this, you just type control-F8 and then right arrow until you come to Time Machine. After that, down arrow and you will come to, start Backup now and just hit enter on that. You can have Time Machine show in the status menu by going into System Preferences and to the Time Machine preferences. There is a checkbox that you need to check if it is not showing up n the status menu. Re: Help me get started running Windows on a Mac
If you can download windows 7, Fusion will install it using an ISO image, that may be the best approach, if you get a disk, you will probably need sighted help to read the product key. Fusion will automate the install of windows for you, so you can do that without sighted help. Once your virtual machine is up and running, you would install your windows screen reader the same way you would for a real PC. Of course, with JFW, you will need to go through the authorization nonsense as well. Yeah the authorization is always fun. I feel like I should be using Window-eyes rather than JAWS at this point when I need to use Windows, and I'll probably end up switching sometime down the road. speed of bootcamp vs vmware vs native windows?
Hi all, Just a quick question. If I win the lottery and get a mac, I will want Windows on it to run things like audio games. I was told that vmware, which seemed like a perfect solution, is slower than native windows and is not a good solution due to its lack of speed. What have people found when running windows via a virtual machine as far as speed? How does it compare to bootcamp, and are there any problems with bootcamp that would make it a less-than-ideal solution? How do both compare to running windows natively? -- Have a great day, Alex (msg sent from GMail website) mehg...@gmail.com; http://www.facebook.com/mehgcap -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Best way to navigate mac visionaries with web item router?

Re: speed of bootcamp vs vmware vs native windows?
Hi Alex I am now running windows 7 through vmware on a 2008 iMac. I don't think that it is very slow at all. The reason I went with the vmware fusion route was because I wanted to be able to access my mac at the same time. I have often wondered about whether it would be more snappy to go with the bootcamp option but I havent gotten around to testing it because i have never had any instances where vmware was too slow. I do things like work on publisher documents and OCR scanning in windows. I've never played games tho so i cannot comment on how good that is in vmware. I don't believe voiceover works in vmware so you would need to install jaws or whatever software you prefer, within the windows area. cleaning out mac hard drive?
Hi all, Can anyone recommend some free utilities to defragment a hard drive and clear out registry? Here is how little I know about macs: do they even use a registry? Does the file system fragment like Windows' ntfs? I am asking on behalf of a friend who has an older mac with 10.4. Re: speed of bootcamp vs vmware vs native windows?
Hi Alex, What you might want to understand is that Bootcamp is, for all intents and purposes, running Windows natively. All the Bootcamp Assistant does for you is repartition your hard drive and install a boot manager so you can pick which system you want to use at any given time, and then you literally install Windows on that empty partition, like you would on a regular PC. The issue with Bootcamp's installation is that it isn't automated. You could create an unattended installation disk to handle that for you, but the process is not trivial. VmWare has a method of automating things so you can just put your WIndows CD in, type in your product key and twenty or twenty five minutes later you have a working Windows system with sound and everything. I've not done the Bootcamp thing myself, so others who have feel free to speak to how it performs. My VmWare machine runs quite happily though, and I've not noticed a speed drop. Admittedly, I'm not doing anything really intensive on the VM, but on new hardware the speed degradation shouldn't be a problem for most people. I think the accessibility issues with Bootcamp make VmWare a very attractive solution. Best, Zack. On Apr 2, 2011, at 5:05 PM, Alex Hall wrote: Hi all, Just a quick question. I see. I am fine with grabbing a sighted person to do that sort of thing, provided I get a working windows install out of the deal. Is bootcamp standard on all 10.6 systems, or only on certain ones? I have a bn apex and iPod, so I would get a Mini rather than a laptop since the apex/iPod already handle my mobile needs. Re: speed of bootcamp vs vmware vs native windows?
Hi Alex, As I said, I recommend VmWare myself, but Bootcamp is standard on all 10.6 systems. I just think VmWare makes more sense because you will ultimately get a working standard WIndows install, with the added benefit of being able to use Mac software at the same time. More over, you won't need sighted assistance with the process, beyond reading the product key so you can copy it down somewhere. These are just my thoughts, of course, and someone feel free to correct me. Best, Zack. On Apr 2, 2011, at 7:23 PM, Alex Hall wrote: I see. Moving the partition slider in bootcamp using VO?
Hi guys. The subject pretty much says it all. I decided last night to install Windows on to Mac so I could use things like VST. However, when it got to the point of partitioning my Hard Drive, I found that I could not in any way shape or form move the slider with VO. I can get sighted assistance if needed, but I'd like to think there is some sorta work around for this. :) If anyone knows how to do this, any help would be greatly appreciated. changes may cause english and lit profs to gnash their teeth
Cheree Heppe here: The article below, taken from Will Smith's compilations, reports changes to the Oxford dictionary that may have teachers tearing their hair. OMG! LOL: Internet Slang Added to Oxford English Dictionary By Daniel Ionescu, PCWorldMar 26, 2011 5:59 AM Time-saving online abbreviations like LOL, OMG, and IMHO are now part of the official English language. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) [80]announced the addition of several acronyms to its dictionary, adding some interesting trivia behind the origins of these Internet-associated expressions. OED explained that although initialisms like [81]OMG (Oh My God), [82]LOL (Laughing Out Loud) and IMHO (In My Humble/Honest Opinion) are strongly associated with the language of electronic communications, their origins are surprisingly predating the Internet era. For example, OED found a quotation for OMG in a personal letter from 1917, and [83]FYI (For Your Information) originated in the language of memoranda in 1941. Also, apparently the LOL expression had a previous life, starting in 1960, denoting an elderly woman (Little Old Lady). OED notes that some expressions like OMG and LOL are used outside electronic communication contexts as well, including print and spoken use, in the form of more than a simple abbreviation: The intention is usually to signal an informal, gossipy mode of expression, and perhaps parody the level of unreflective enthusiasm or overstatement that can sometimes appear in online discourse, while at the same time marking oneself as an `insider' au fait with the forms of expression associated with the latest technology. If you're not familiar with the online slang, you can always check out this [84]Internet slang dictionary and translator. Just enter the text slang you want to translate and you're done.
