Re: Adium Weirdness

2011-05-07 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hey everybody. I'm finally back after being sick all week and my Mac was doing
all these weird things. It turns out dumb ass, meaning me, set the year to 2012
rather than 2011 after my Mac Book's battery died. So anyway I fixed the date
and I'm back up.
Anyway to the topic at hand, Mitchel, there's a way to set Adium to read
messages or whatever you want it to read, thus eliminating the need to always
go into the HTML content of Adium. In the preferences, go to the events tab.
Tab to the events table and select the event you want too speak. Press VO+Right
arrow to get to the event description, for example, contact signs off. The item
will be collapsed so expand it with VO+\. Arrow down and you will hear
something like play a sound and so on. Press enter on the option to change.
You'll be in a menu to change the action. There's a pop up button that'll
either say play a sound or whatever so press space on it. You'll get several
options such as play a sound, display a growl notification and speak event so
go to speak event. Press the ok button when you're done. Like I said, this can
be done on pretty much every event so give it a shot.

Shawn

Re: external numer pad

2011-05-07 Thread CJ Daniel
Louie,

I tried one, with my MacBook Pro,, wanting to use the numbpad commander.
Unfortunately, the Mac didn't recognize a lot of the commands with the various
modifiers. So, I gave it up for a bad job & went with the Magic Trackpad. I'd
be interested to find out, also, if anyone else has had better results & with
what external device.

Good luck,

CJ

Yes I do have a Hovercam. At the moment, I am having trouble with the focus

Re: Recovering if you Close all Windows in an App?

2011-05-07 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

You can recover from this in a number of ways:

1. By going under the Window menu and choosing the main window for the app.
works in iTunes, AddressBook and some others.

or...

2. Sometimes you can press key combinations like cmd-1 or cmd-option-1 to
bring up the main menu. these usually have menu items attached as well. As in
Mail, you press cmd-1 to bring up the InBox window but you can also find this
item under the Goto option under the Mailbox menu.

or...

3. There are occasions when you need to press cmd-n or go under the File menu
and choose New or New Window.

There isn't really a "one thing fixes all" for this situation but I've found,
in most cases, there is some sort of option so that you don't need to Quit and
Re-Open the apps.

Later...

Re: Help with cleaning up my ITunes library

2011-05-07 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Krister,

Sorry for the length of this, but I have three options for you. The first
rebuilds your iTunes Library, and the other two use sorting to perform this for
you. I'm not aware of any utility to do this but just because I'm not aware of
it doesn't mean that there isn't something out there.

Option 1:

If you don't mind having to rebuild your Playlists, then the easiest way to do
this would be:

1. Select the Music item from your Source Table.
2. Navigate to the Music Table and Interact with it.
3. Press cmd-a to Select All.
4. Press the Delete or Backspace key.
5. You will be asked if you're sure, press the "r" key on your keyboard and
all items in the Music section of your Library will be removed.
6. iTunes will ask if you wish to move these items to the Trash as well or if
you'd like them to remain in the iTunes Library. Keep them in your Library,
that is, don't move them to the Trash.
7. Don't panic, they're still around.
8. Press cmd-o to add items to your Library.
9. Press cmd-h to bring focus to your Home folder.
10. Navigate to the Music folder and expand it.
11. Select the iTunes folder.
12. Stop Interacting with the list and press the Open button.

Everything will be repopulated into your Library DB. If you have Movies or
other non-music items, iTunes will not re-import them into the Library DB, they
will simply be ignored.

Option 2:

If #1 is not preferable due to the loss of Playlists, then you'd could try the
Display Duplicates item under the File menu. Then sort your Library by the
Song name column, which will place all duplicates beside each other, then go
through the Table deleting what you don't want.

Option 3:

When in the Music Table, sort by the first column by pressing
VO-shift-backslash when VO is focused on the first column. This sort should
place all the "missing linked" items together and then you could quickly delete
all of them which would consequently make your job of getting rid of the other
duplicates a lot faster since those "missing" files would no longer be in the
Library.

Hope this is clear enough.

Later...

Re: Help with cleaning up my ITunes library

2011-05-07 Thread Esther
Hi Krister and John,

I think you might want to look into the "Dupin" app that Doug Adams has on his
"AppleScripts for iTunes" site:
http://dougscripts.com/itunes/itinfo/dupin.php

There's now also a "Dupin Lite" app ($7.99 instead of $15) if you only want to
identify and delete the duplicate tracks (which sounds like the main problem --
false links), instead of also managing them (i.e., also clean up and
consolidate multiple real entries for the same track in your library).

I haven't used either of these apps, but I've used numerous other of his
AppleScripts for iTunes -- particularly back in the days when iTunes was less
accessible and a lot of these scripts supplied the functionality that wasn't
yet in iTunes. Some list members have used his "Corral All Dupes" scripts.
These are quite helpful, but don't address the issue of automatically handling
dozens or hundreds of dupe entries after they are identified, which is what
Dupin is designed to do. The assumption behind the other scripts (which work
better than the iTunes options for duplicate identification) is that you won't
have so many that you can't easily clean this up manually with the info. Dupin
is designed for people who feel that the problem really got out of hand for
simple manual clean ups assisted with the scripts. (That's also why I've never
had to use Dupin.) Try reading up on the description, and then you can purchase
either Dupin Lite or Dupin from the Mac App store.

I did a quick Google search for other products, because I was curious about
whether we'd get a similar question for iTunes on Windows from the viphone
list, and I found a recent Ars Technica review article that reviewed "Rinse" (a
Real Networks product with both Windows and Mac versions) as "good, not great"
-- especially when stacked up against alternatives that included the less
expensive and more effective Dupin on the Mac side:
"Hands on: RealNetworks' Rinse for iTunes is good, not great" By Jacqui Cheng
April 26, 2011
http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2011/04/hands-on-realnetworks-rinse-for-itunes-is-good-not-great.ars

"If Real is going to ask real customers (ba-dum...) to pay $40 apiece for its
software, it could put a little effort into getting the details right.…

It's for this reason that we hesitate to recommend Rinse when there are a
handful of other options available. For example, Windows users can use
meta-iPod to remove duplicates, add album art, compare your metadata against
verified sources, and even assign track ratings. Mac users can use Doug's
AppleScripts for iTunes in order to manage their music (with a script for
pretty much any task you would dream up), or simply use the$15 Dupin app to
remove duplicates. And there's always TuneUp for Mac and Windows, which can
also fix song info, remove duplicates, and add missing cover art for $39.95 per
year or $49.95 for a lifetime subscription."

Check the end of the Ars Technica that I linked above if you want links to any
of the other products that were mentioned. As I said, I've never used Dupin,
but Doug Adams sets the standards for high-quality AppleScripts for iTunes.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Another advantage to a bluetooth keyboard over the touchscreen is that
you don't have to wait to hear each letter as you type it. Even though
the IPad screen is much easier to type on in a manner that at least
resembles "real typing" I find it still a lot slower than a real
keyboard, because I do have to hear every letter to make sure I didn't
mess up. I don't do that with regular keyboards; in fact, I find typing
echo generally distracting under normal, non-touchscreen circumstances.

Re: Bringing email over from windows

2011-05-07 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi, It's tough to explain, but if you log into your gmail account on the web,
then click settings,
then click forwarding and pop/imap,
Enable Imap, and then you use the Imap server settings instead of the pop
server settings.

This allows you to manage all of your email on the server, so that a change
made on one computer takes place across all devices that you use to check email.

Once you have added the IMap account to windows mail, you can then select
messages and press control shift V to move them. You then choose your IMap
folder and the messages are uploaded to the server. Then when you put the
settings into a new device such as apple mail on your mac, the messages are
downloaded to the new computer but managed on the server. So, your new mac and
your old windows machine will have exactly the same mailboxes and a change made
on one takes place on the other.

Just remember to remove the pop account or set it to stop checking or it will
grab all of the messages and try to delete them from the server and just make a
huge mess.
If you are really intimidated by all of this and you just want some one to sit
with you over the phone and do it, check http://www.erik-burggraaf.com and feel
free to give me a call. I charge, but you will have the peace of mind knowing
that it will be taken care of just the way you want. Or you can follow the
steps above and just keep emailing the list with questions as you go. We're

Re: bluetooth keyboard forward-delete redux

2011-05-07 Thread Esther
Hi Barry and Colin,

Barry wants to forward delete on the iPad 2 using the Apple Wireless keyboard.
Colin, Fn+Delete only works for Mac computers, since the Fn key is not active
for iOS functions. The way to forward delete letters (or words, lines, etc.)
using either the Apple Wireless keyboard or the iPad Keyboard Dock is to hold
down the Shift key while you tap the Right arrow key to select the next
character, then press the Delete key to delete your selection. Note that this
method also works to forward delete words, lines, etc. and that you can extend
the range of your selected text as long as you continue to keep the Shift key
pressed while you tap the movement key. For example, you can forward delete
the next 2, 3, or more letters by continuing to hold down the Shift key while
you tap the Right arrow key to extend your selection range before pressing
delete. If you realize that you really want to forward delete everything from
that letter to the end of the word, just continue to press the Shift key, then
also press the "Option" key and tap the Right arrow key to move your selection
forward by words, and then press the delete key. You can press the "Option"
key on either the left or right sides of the space bar to change to movement by
words, depending on your preferences. You might find it easier to think of the
Option key together with the arrow keys just beside it (when you use the Right
Option key). I'm used to typing on the Mac laptops, with the Control, Command,
and Option keyboard shortcuts, so I usually press the Left Option key while
tapping the arrow keys for navigation. Note that for one-handed use (Brandt
and others) since there are no sticky keys or user definable "Commanders" for
VoiceOver and general shortcuts on the iOS side as there are for Mac OS X on
your regular computer, you should press the Shift and arrow key combinations on
the right side of the keyboard. I find it possible to press Shift and tap the
arrow keys with one hand to move selection by line or word (either moving
selection forwards with Right arrow and Down arrow, or backwards with Left
arrow and Up arrow ), all on the right side of the keyboard, and then, once I
release the Shift key, to delete all the selection by pressing the "Delete"
key. This is not the way I'm used to doing this, since I touch type with both
hands, and usually press the "Shift" key on the left side of the keyboard while
I tap the arrow keys on the right, but it's possible to do one-handed. List
users who are not familiar with using selection and movement on the Mac, may
find it easier to think of using the word movement command combinations
(Option+Right arrow to move to next word and Option+Left arrow to move to
previous word) by associating this with the Right Option key (next to the arrow
keys). Again, I press the Left Option key along with continuing to hold down
the left Shift key when I want to change to selection by words, and then tap
the arrow keys, but others learning this may find it easier to keep the action
of holding down the "Shift" key for selection separate from changing the
combinations for units of movement (hold down an "Option" key and tap the Right
or Left arrow keys to move forwards or backwards by words) separate, and use
the "Option" key on the Right side of the keyboard (next to the Left arrow key).

I've mentioned before, but will repeat this here: selecting text from your
current insertion point can be made in either the forward or backward direction
depending on whether you press the Left or Right arrow keys (or the Up or Down
arrow keys if selecting by lines instead of words). Selections can also be
extended, as long as you continue to keep the Shift key pressed while you type
your movement key combinations. But that means that your selection covers
everything from your current insertion point position to the point you've
finally moved to, and you can undo selected text by moving backwards.
Specifically, if I press the Shift key to start selection, then tap the Right
arrow key, I select the next letter. If I continue to press the Shift key, but
then tap the Left arrow key twice, the first tap of the Left arrow key undoes
my previous selection, and the next tap moves my selection to the letter before
my starting insertion point. If I now press the "Delete" key I will delete the
character before my insertion point. Also, when I move my selection forwards
or backwards by lines (Up or Down arrow keys) while I am in the middle of a
line, then end of my selection will likely be in the middle of a word on that
line. If I want to make that selection extend to the rest of the word, I need
to press the Option key and tap the right arrow key (while continuing to press
the Shift key). If I want to make that selection extend to the rest of the
line, I need to press the Command key and tap the right arrow key to move to
the end of the line, while a

Did you try fn+delete!
the fn key is the most bottom left key next to control!
And you can forward delete words with fn+option+delete!

Btw, by "link" in this case i mean database entry such as title or artist.

Not only that, but, as the article states, not until people started blogging
about it publically did Skype feel the need to issue a patch. However,
apparently, the patch has not been pushed out to users. The article provides a

Re: repairing permissions

2011-05-07 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Carolyn,

When you repair permissions from the Disk utility in your Utilities folder,
there will always be certain items that cannot be repaired because they are in
use. Some people, therefore, use the Disk Utility from their installation disk,
which will do a more thorough job, but for most purposes, it isn't really
necessary.

So don't worry about that message.

Cheers,

Anne
