Adium and an Ipod question

2011-05-22 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hey all. The topic says it all. First, in Adium, is there a way to display
contacts that are offline as well as online? And lastly, yesterday I bought a
5th generation Ipod Nanno. I didn't realize at first that it was touch screen,
but whatever. I think I've nailed the touch screen stuff with Voice Over. My
question is, will it harm the battery if I have it plugged in to the USB port
on my Mac? I know it won't effect the battery on the Mac because I have it
plugged in. Thanks.

Re: mac book

2011-05-22 Thread Tony Hernandez
Hi Gerry.

I'm a jaws user as well as a Mac user. I find that the ease of web navigation
on the mac with Voiceover depends on your needs. its' different from the jaws
method, but how good or easy it is is strictly a matter of opinion. there are
certain times when I'm using a Mac that I wish Voiceover would navigate the web
in the same way as jaws or window eyes, but that's rare and usually pertains to
reading and handling programming code. I and others have written to Apple about
this style of navigation and asked for it as one of the options/methods of
getting around a web page. Apple' accessibility division seems to be pretty
receptive to feedback, so I wouldn't be shocked to see this implemented in the
future.

2011-05-22 Thread Ronald McEwan
Hi,

As I am typing this response on my Mac Air, it has been three months since I
took the plunge and bought it. I am a committed Jaws user since the early
days. I use Jaws at work exclusively.

I find the navigation of Safari somewhat less than that of Jaws. However, with
time I have come to navigate web sites quicker and with more confidence. I am
able to move through a site with the same ability as in Jaws.

Hi there, For me it was the most difficult part of my switching experience, but
like with everything else my difficulties arose from the fact that I expected

Mobile FAcebook Friends Page

You can search for your friends by typing in their name. However, when I did

Anyone else seen this?

I've heard the regular FB site works with WebKit, but I haven't tested this

Re: opening documents with attachments

2011-05-22 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

If you've saved the actual eMail to the Documents folder, then when the eMail
is opened in TextEdit, simply navigate to the area of the document where the
imbedded file is announced and then VO-space on it. This will open the
attachment.

Otherwise, you'll need to save the attachments prior to saving the actual
eMail message. In this case the attachments will thus be outside the eMail
message and easier to locate.

Hey. Thanks to the person that replied last night, I've got the Adium thing

it. My next question for that is can you have it set to display email addresses
after each contact, for example, my MSN address which is
bigbigshawn@gmail.com? If not that's ok.
And finally, thanks for correcting me about the Ipod Nanno. I didn't realize
that it was the 6th gen that I had until you told me that the 6th gens have the
touch screen. And also, I meant to say, will it hurt the battery if I left it
plugged in for a long time after it's charged? Obviously I was either day
dreaming or half asleep when I wrote that question, lol. Thanks a lot, you've
all been great.

Re: Percentage of CPU for VoiceOver?

2011-05-22 Thread Jon Cohn
1. Generally the ID you mention is called the PID, to distinguish it from the
UID or GID or PPID.
2. The Percent of CPU is percentage of a single processor. It is calculated by
dividing the CPU used by a process by the time change since when the CPU was
last checked, or the Process Start time. It can be greater then 100 percent if
two conditions are met.
1. If your computer has multiple processors or cores.
2. The process has multiple threads. A thread is one way for a computer
program to divide a task into distinct tasks. Voice Over probably has one
thread for speech output one thread for receiving keyboard input , one thread
for understanding a windows elements.

1. If your computer has multiple processors or cores.

Re: mac book

2011-05-22 Thread Mike Arrigo
I would not say it's more difficult, but it is a bit different. You navigate
more by item than by line, if you've used the web on the iphone, it's very
similar to that. Personally, I enjoy surfing the web on the mac. The only time
there is a problem is if you need to access flash content, and that's Adobe's
fault. I think voiceover is the best screen reader for handling dynamic web
pages, these are pages that change their content when you click a link, but it
doesn't load an entire new page. In Windows, system access seems to handle this
the best.

Re: Adium and an Ipod question

2011-05-22 Thread Mike Arrigo
With lithium ion batteries, they will not overcharge. When the charge is done,
the charge circuit turns off. It's not necessary to totally discharge these
batteries, actually they prefer to be recharged at around 40 percent or so. The
one time you may want to do this is to reset the battery gauge, but you should
only need to do that once every few months.

Re: Hurray for GarageBand!

2011-05-22 Thread Chris Snyder
Hi Jes,
Thanks for the kind words. The instruments provided with GB and those also
provided with Logic are samples of actual instruments. I dug around and found
the aiff files of the various instrument samples, and it appears Apple went to
a lot of trouble to get really nice samples. Even though I find logic to be
terribly inaccessible, I'm glad I bought it if only for all the new instruments
it provided GarageBand. I use an MAudio Key Studio 49 USB keyboard to interact
with the instruments.

Re: Percentage of CPU for VoiceOver?

2011-05-22 Thread Doug Lawlor
Hi Chris and all:
Just took another look at the Activity Monitor and VoiceOVer is running at
about 9 and 11 % and has 20 threads running. The number of threads seem to be
based on how many windows are open at once. I conducted the following test. I
have three programs running at the moment; Mail, Activity Monitor, and
finder plus other services which are running in the background. The number of
threads that VoiceOver is using at the moment is 20. In Mail I did a
Shift+Command+a to open the address panel and took another look at the Activity
Monitor. The number of threads increased to 21. So the results I am seeing here
seem to show that a VoiceOver thread is opened for every window opened on the
system. This makes sense since VoiceOver has to interact with every window that
is presented by an application.
