RE: Lion 10.72 is now available.
Um.. I don't know how that song got attached to my previous post. Am very, very confused. If it went through, and you like it, I guess that's OK, but I didn't attach anything deliberately. I wonder if my computer is possessed! I'm tripple checking this message, and there definitely are not any attachments at the time I'm hitting send. If another one goes through, then I guess I've got problems I need to investigate once I've had sleep. Anyway, sorry for any confusion; I'm definitely not trying to cause any problems, and even without the song, I stand by my comments about lion. -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Missy Hoppe Sent: Thursday, October 13, 2011 2:31 AM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Lion 10.72 is now available. I agree. I think the com.apple.doc.extra thing may have been resolved, but VO running at start-up seems to be hit or miss now, and I certainly can't find any other improvements that make me want to officially switch to Lion. I also noticed that Pianopub still isn't read accurately under lion while it reads great in snow leopard. In fact, the only thing I like better in lion than snow leopard is the way skype contacts are read. I have no clue what the difference is; so far as I can tell, I'm running the same version of skype under both operating systems, but it just reads slightly better under lion; none of those favorites checkboxes and stuff. Apart from that, though, I still have absolutely no desire to run lion, and will continue using Snow Leopard as long as it works and meets my needs. -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Shawn Krasniuk Sent: Wednesday, October 12, 2011 11:57 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Lion 10.72 is now available. Yeah, it still seems like they're sidestepping a lot of the issues that VO has, such as the freaky pitch changes with the Nuance voices and the annoying Safari busy messages are still there too when doing easy tasks like reading forum posts in Samnet and such. Speaking of Samnet, I know this is OT but, has anybody with Samnet accounts tried using the socializer with Chrome? I'm thinking of giving Chrome another chance and I'm not too happy that I can't change my screen name with Safari. And I say another chance because last time I used Chrome it was completely inaccessible. Since this is off topic, just write me off list about it please and thanks. Hi everyone. I'm attempting to update to iOS5 by means of an IPSW file. Since my Mac is the main computer with which I sync now, I loaded the file onto my harddrive, plugged in my phone, and navigated to it in the sources table in iTunes. I am trying to restore the phone to factory defaults, so once I located the restore button, I pressed vo-command F5 in order to make sure that the mouse pointer was where it should be. VO repeated, Restore button. I then held down the option key, and tapped the lower left hand corner of my magic track pad. My Mac mini emitted a small ding, and nothing else happened. I tried double tapping with the option key held down, and received the same ding in response. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, as this is the first time I have ever tried to perform an option click. It should be noted that I am running Lion 10.72, and iTunes 10.5 which was just released. Any assistance which anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Allison -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Hi John, The program to access ntfs with read write access from a mac, is called ntfs3g. You will need the supplementary program called mac fuse for it to operate. Ntfs3g runs under sl, but not under lion. There is also a commercial version however, and that one works in lion too. Hth, Paul. On Oct 13, 2011, at 6:19 AM, John D. ios5 podcast VoiceOverOn
Dear listers, For anyone interested, I was pleasantly surprised by the arrival of the latest podcast called VoiceOverOn. A few very well informed people, will talk you through what is new in iOS 5, they inform you about iCloud which is also mac related, and because one of the guys is a beta tester, you get sort of an inside report on how Apple handles feedback in the mobile area. If you're interested in ios 5, you plan on updating and want to know what's coming etc, I would recommend giving it a listen. The podcast is well done, clean, and in easy tempo. Very nice to hear, even if your native language is not English. If you want to subscribe to the podcast feed, and you want to hear previous episodes as well, you can subscribe in itunes by putting the source table on podcasts, which is the fifth row, move to the right to the search field, type in VoiceOverOn which is all one word, hit enter, and then in the right pane, verrify that itunes found the podcast, hit subscribe, let it download the latest episode and you can start listening. Re: Anyone else having issues upgrading to IOS5 on their IPhones?
Hi Scott, Well, I took in the baseball playoffs, took a nap and then started the upgrade at around 10:30 last night. All went well, no errors, and apps were restored. The only thing I found rather odd was that a number of my apps had to be updated from the App Store. Some of them went back to April, May and June of this year. They were all current before. Not a big deal, it just took some time to re-update some of my apps. Going to try my BrailleConnect to see how well that remains paired. RE: Moving iLife Back To Snow Leopard
Hi, They stopped including DVD's with the 2011 models in all countries, unfortunately. The good news is, when you reformat your mac, your iLife purchase are tied to your app store account, so you can just redownload them again, unless you're going back to snow leopard for some unexplainable reason. -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Gavin Sent: Thursday, October 13, 2011 8:27 AM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Moving iLife Back To Snow Leopard Hi Ricardo, I've just double-checked my Mac's box. There appears to be a disk-sized sleeve included, but it has no disk in it. Whether this is because I have a 2011 MacBook Pro, or because the DVD's aren't included with Macs in South Africa, or even because of an error on the part of the company I ordered this machine from, I do not know. Re: trying to create a me.com email account
Hi Donna, As far as I can tell, your password for iCloud mail is just the password for your apple ID. I'm just making a semi-educated guess, but I think It's just a part of your iCloud account and probably can't have a different password for technical reasons. If you look in the mail app, you'll probably have a message welcoming you to iCloud mail. This means you are all set. I also had the same problem with sending a test message to my new address. I don't know what is causing it, but when I went to twitter and changed my email address with them, I received the verification message from twitter just fine. I did some investigating and it seems that there is a problem with my current email provider. the undeliverable error message came from them, not from the iCloud server. I'm wondering if the same kind of thing is happening here. Sorry I couldn't be any more help. On Oct 13, 2011, at 9:20 AM, Goodin, Donna wrote: Hi all, Can anyone help with this? I kept getting the cannot restore error message. Then I had a thought. I went into my app switcher and made sure to close everything. Then my iPhone upgraded just fine. I should have done that to begin with but sometimes I forget about it. I felt dumb for not doing that to begin with even if it was purely by chance that closing my apps in the app switcher fixed the problem. Re: IOS 5 update questions
It took a good 30 minutes which kind of surprised me. Apparently it fully wipes and reloads the phone OS and then restores all your apps and data from the iTunes backup. This restore runs in the background so you can keep the phone tethered and use it while the rest of your media comes back. I don't recall previous updates wiping everything out like this. I just ran Software Update and installed Itunes 10.5. Now, when I try to open Itunes, it says This version of Itunes has not been correctly configured, and quits when I hit the okay button, which is the only choice. No information about how to fix it, or what. I'm running Snow Leopard on a MBP15 with 4G RAM I had successfully been using Itunes 10.3 until I upgraded, and now I have Itunes nothing point nothing. Thanks, Dan. It looks like it's been accepted, i.e. when I go into my icloud account, it shows up as an email address, but I can't send any mail to it. I've tried from two different addresses, and both messages come back as undeliverable. Also, when I open Mail on my phone, I get an error message that says that either the user name or password is incorrect, and I'm certain that this is not the case. Among other things, I've re-entered it several times just to be sure. any thoughts? Thanks, Donna On Oct 13, 2011, at 4:45 PM, Dan wrote: Hello, You do not need a MobileMe account. Re: trying to create a me.com email account
Hello, See if you can remove the iCloud account. It's the last option in the settings menu where you set all that stuff up. Just make sure it's the iCloud account. HTH. Dan On Oct 13, 2011, at 1:53 PM, Goodin, Donna wrote: Thanks, Dan. Also, when I open Mail on my phone, I get an error message that says that either the user name or password is incorrect, and I'm certain that this is not the case. I found this out accidentally, so I don't know if it's documented anywhere. If you're using the preview pane, and you want to navigate from mailbox list to message list to message content, use control-tab. Re: Can I stop the backup and begin it later without likelihood of a problem?
Hi, Its probably too late now, but no, I really wouldn't do that if I were you. iTunes isn't always 100% truethfull about what its doing what stage its at in the process - e.g. It says its restoring the firmware when its actually upgrading it, so I really wouldn't feel confident enough to remove the device half way through an upgrade. You could be lucky though, but if not, you'll probably have a broken phone until you can restore again. Cheers, Ben. Re: Lion 10.72 is now available.
Talking about restarting, after I upgraded last night, I was putting on my headphones so as not to disturb anyone and my machine did a really weird thing that I thought a Mac would never do. When I put the headphones on, I experienced my sounds and voice over skipping like a broken record or scratched CD. I thought for sure it was gonna crash, so I ended up restarting and sounds and Voice Over was normal again. Anyone have any ideas of what's happening? RE: I can't seem to move my contacts and Mobile data to I Cloud.
Hello Kawal, et al. I decided to move all of my Contacts, Calendar Appointments, etc from my beloved Mobile Me account to the iCloud earlier today. Instead of using either my Mac, PC, or IOS device, I launched my browser of choice, Internet Explorer 8 (Windows 7), and pointed it to: http://me.com/move I simply followed the on-screen prompts and all went perfectly. For those of us who wish to use iCloud data with Outlook 2007 or 2010, we must install the iCloud Control Panel. While it is not necessary to remove the Mobile Me Control Panel from Windows 7, I suggest that you do so after successfully configuring the iCloud Control Panel for Windows 7. Also, I helped a friend make the move from Mobile Me to iCloud; I used VoiceOver with Safari on her Mac to move her account. Re: program my husband wrote
Well Python is cross-platform and is easy to use. Tell him from me that: Python is object-oriented, using functions and classes. In Python, absolutely everything is an object, even methods. I could therefore have an array of function names and call one by using funcs[2](args). This is very powerful once you get used to it. It is also scripted and loosely typed. This is valid: a=5 a=hello Note the lack of semicolons? A semicolon is used to split a line into multiple commands, like: print(a); return False Python is also indentation-based and does not use braces. If you always indent code anyway, this actually saves a step. Learn more than you ever wanted to know at http://www.python.org. On 10/13/11, Eugenia Firth gigifi...@sbcglobal.net wrote: Hi Paul. RE: Navigation in Mail Change with Lion 10.7.2
You are absolutely correct, Theresa; and what a disappointing failure of 7.2. The breaking of the Tab key as a navigation key in Mail was well documented before the release. RE: Navigation in Mail Change with Lion 10.7.2
The problem with using the VO+J command, Alex, as far as I am concerned, is that it, in many cases, causes you to automatically interact with the text of the message; if this is all you wish to do then fine; but, if you merely want to hear the contents of the message then quickly skim other messages in the thread, you need to stop interacting with the current message no less then twice. RE: I can't seem to move my contacts and Mobile data to I Cloud.
Hello, It's been saying moving data for over 8 hours/ OK: 1. Assuming that you initiated the move from the web via Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, etc, closing the browser would make no difference as all of this takes place at Apple's end of the proverbial connection so, if you have not done so, go ahead and close all your devices down, including your computer. 2. Restart your computer of choice and then point your browser of choice to www.icloud.com and login with your username and password. You should then see any data was transferred from your Mobile Me account. 3. Assuming the following 2 steps go well, then begin logging into that same account on your various devices. If you would like to move an application to the doc, open the app, find it on the doc, use VO shift M to bring up a menu, open the options submenu and select add to doc. If you want to have a folder on the doc, highlight the folder and use command shift T to add it. Brett C. Re: Navigation in Mail Change with Lion 10.7.2
Hi Anne. This Mac newbee discovered something that those of you who know what you're doing may not have discovered because I don't think you would mess around on the keyboard with as much I guess desperation. I discovered that although the tab doesn't work like it did before, it does in fact go from message to message once you have gotten into the message list. In fact I got frustrated because it kept going to the next one, and I was very glad to discover the VO J command or the return would get into the message. I also, and I don't know if this is new or not, found a way to control how many lines to hear in a message preview. So, it sounds like you could do what you want by going into the preferences and setting the number of lines you want to hear for a message preview and use the tab key to go from message to message without interacting with the VO J key unless you want to. You may discover that what I am saying is not completely true, and if you do, please let me know. Regards, Gigi On Oct 13, 2011, at 8:26 PM, M. Re: Navigation in Mail Change with Lion 10.7.2
Hi Guys. I think this Mac newbee may have discovered something you experienced guys might not have thought of because you experienced guys would be less likely to mess around on the keyboard in desperation. I found that, although the tab didn't work like it did before, I could go from message to message with it. Also, I found that I could set how many lines I would hear in a preview. I went to preferences, I think it was. This means that, if I wanted to, I could get a quick review of the message before pressing VO J. I was glad to discover that VO J worked and that return would also take you into the message. I discovered all this by accident in my messing around on the keyboard trying to get to where I wanted to go. Regards, Gigi On Oct 13, 2011, at 9:26 PM, Ray Foret Jr wrote: All right. Re: Navigation in Mail Change with Lion 10.7.2
Sorry guys for sending information twice, but I did not know the first one got sent. Let me tell you guys that this Mac new bee just discovered another way to crash Mail. don't do what I did, or you might crash yours. I went into Trash because I decided to reply to a message I had just deleted. I've done this before and it was ok. However, this time, when I wrote the reply and pressed Send, Mail locked up., sort of I couldn't get it to send any messages, and I had no windows in Mail once I pressed Send. I could read messages. I finally shut down the computer, and I had to press the power key to do that. When I shut it down, Mail sent the messages right away, minus one of them that I thought was lost. Taylor wrote: The problem with using the VO+J command, Alex, as far as I am concerned, is that it, in many cases, causes you to automatically interact with the text of the message; if this is all you wish to do then fine; but, if you merely want to hear the contents of the message then quickly skim other messages in the thread, you need to stop interacting with the current message no less then twice. Too many unnecessary keystrokes in my and several others' opinion. Mac for college
Hello. i am planning on purchasing a mac for my first year of college next year. i am currently learning voiceover and I prefer it to the PC screenreaders available. I have a few questions that hopefully you kind folks can answer to help me make a more informed purchase. 1. What macbook would fit my needs? i will need to watch a lot of videos, do reasearch, write long papers, and create spreadsheets or powerpoints. 2. I heard that microsoft office is not accesible on the Mac. Is this a true statement? 3. What equivalent mac softwares are available for powerpoint, word, and excell? Thanks for your help, Louis -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. To post to this group, send email to macvisionaries@googlegroups.com. Re: Mac for college
Hi Louis, It sounds like a MacBook Air would be your best bet, though I don't know what kind of specs it has. I've also heard that the MacBook Air has a similar price to the 13 inch MacBook Pro, which you could also try. If you don't want to spend too much, you could also go for the ordinary MacBook model which, if my memory serves me correctly, is made out of a kind of plastic as opposed to the MacBook Pro, which is aluminium. As far as equivalent software to Microsoft Office goes, Apple has a productivity suite called iWork that contains 3 applications. Pages, for word processing, Numbers, for spreadsheets, and Keynote, for creating presentations. It's very accessible with VoiceOver. Hope this info heaps. Re: Mac for college
Yes, this is very useful information. I am leaning more towards the macbook Pro. Are there reasons why the pro is better than the air or vice versa?
