Re: problem with itunes when importing custom ring tones

2012-01-22 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Falcon and Ray,

Well you solved my problem. Problem was that I did not take into account the
length of the ring tones. The itunes issue, not importing them into the right
source table, is resolved by hitting vo space inside finder on each ringtone to
import. Works like a charm. Thanks a lot guys. Simply importing the m4r files
from within itunes by hitting command plus o did not work, so just have itunes
set as the default m4r player, which is by default on the mac, and then when
itunes sees the file, it imports it as a ringtone and it then lands into the
correct table. Thanks again.

Paul.

when you go to the Iphone column on the table, you want to make sure you are

 1. Given a bunch of files from my old Nokia, being mp3 files, I use Amadeus
pro to batch convert them into m4r. Amadeus has a simple choice for its
destination file format, where export as iphone ringtone is its name, and
it produces m4r files. From what I understand, m4r is just m4a with another
 filename extension.

 2. Given these new m4r files, I open itunes, hit command o, browse to the
m4r files, select them all, and I hit open. Itunes imports them.

 3. Even though the files are m4r, they will still import into my music
library. So I go into the itunes music table, I select all my ring tones, I
go to the itunes source list and select ring tones there. Then I paste into
the ring tones table. This works, because the files are there, even after
 closing and reopening iTunes.

However, after synching my iphone, nothing has been added to the ring tones
on the phone. I open a contact from contacts on the phone, edit it, and
want to assign a new ring tone that I just sent to the iPhone, but only the
standard stuff is there. What am I doing wrong?

Note: while editing metadata of the ring tones once they appear in the
itunes ring tone table, I can choose to set the genre to ring tone, but
that does not help. In another combo box, where you can tell itunes that
this is music, a podcast, a tv show etc, you cannot tell itunes to make it
 of type ring tone.

What am I doing wrong here? The problem is in iTunes where I go wrong I
guess, because m4r creation seems to work in Amadeus.

Re: problem with itunes when importing custom ring tones

2012-01-22 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Ricardo,

Fortunately, that was not the problem. I.e.: itunes imports just fine if you
simply hit vo space on each individual ring tone you want imported. As Falcon
and Ray said, it should be 30 seconds or less. If you don't take care of that,
then the ring tone will import just fine, but it won't synch to the iphone,
saying there were errors because the new ring tones won't play on the phone.
Amadeus has a preset file type to export to an iphone ring tone, which is m4r
in one simple go. It works now. Thanks for thinking along.

Paul.

Re: Lion Server

2012-01-22 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I agree. Static IP is the way to go. It's far more reliable and much less
hassle in the long run. With respect to MCX preferences and such, I've found
it much easier to use WGM than Terminal. I'm just not good enough at the
Terminal to dig as deep as needed to perform these tasks using Terminal. Once
you get past the initial accessibility issues in the Preferences tab of WGM,
the rest is very accessible and very powerful.

Just my opinion, of course and, you will probably not need this functionality
anyway.

find a dynamic ip solution around the web which itself costs money or go for
the static ip route, whichever might be most cost effective, but if you

So, let me explain a bit about what I'm trying to do. I will keep this
pretty short, but essentially I wanted to look at the possibility of setting
up a VPN that I could access using my iOS devices etc. when at a location
with an open WiFI, which of course there are just some things you would not
do in that environment unless you had a VPN.
SO, I heard a podcast where these guys explained how they did this using
Lion Server and DYNDNS.org. However, the problem I had to resolve is setting
up my network so I could access the VPN. Of course this means I have to get
Lion Server, but also means I have to totally reconfigure things.
I have a SMC gateway from COmcast and apparently the only way I can pull
this off is to move my Time Capsule or AirPort Extreme into the DNZ. SO, I'd
setup my AirPort in the DMZ and move all the machines behind that APple
router which is how I had things setup in the past. This way I can totally
bypass the SMC since I cannot put it in bridge mode unless I want to spend
$15 a month for one static IP and I think not. Then I can use DYDNS or
possibly the one free domain COmcast gives me as a part of my business-class
acount and use that as the means to get back to my network via the VPN. Oh
and the gent who set all this up is a IT security professional. So, this aut
to be quite interesting. ALthough it sounds like Lion Server might add some
other functionality that would be handy like updating the other Macs in the
house instead of me running around updating stuff by hand. More long-term is
the ability to manage iOS devices and the like as well.
What would be really interesting is if I setup an iCal server and hooked
everyone to that in the house, how that plays with iCloud. H, this is
 all quite interesting.

 THanks,

the User/Group/Computer management is very accessible. The Preference
Management controls aren't initially visible to VO in WGM but I have worked
around this for the most part though using mouse keys. Once you navigate
to the correct spot on the screen using mouse keys, you click the mouse

OCR programs for the scanner and a printer question

2012-01-22 Thread Becky Knaub
Hi all,
I just got my wireless printer hooked up and ready to go, It came with my Mac
but I needed sighted assistance since its wireless. It is a printer scanner
combo. I want to know if there are any affordable apps that do the same or
similar to Kurzwiel does.

I aslo want to know how to move around the printer screen since some of it
doesn't appear to be accessible. I have never printed with a mac before so
today was the first time. My Dad had to click with the trackpad since VO wasn't
cooperating. Thanks

No there is only one account as far as I know. I could be wrong though. I'm
still very new to the mac. On the users folder it only has one name. Does
that answer if there is only none account? Hmmm.

Yep, that's a good indication. Also, at the log-on screen, you're placed in a
list of all the accounts on your computer you can log in to, which you could
use the arrow keys to go through, and if you press the down arrow a few times
and only hear one name, yours, that's another way to tell you're the only
account on the computer. Anyway, sounds like you got it fixed, so all's well.

You can close the text window before you quit the application, or, if you
forget and it opens with that document again, just do a command-n to start a
new document. You can also quit with option-command-q to clear all of the
document windows as well.

Re: Lion Server

2012-01-22 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi Yuma.
I haven't noticed that server prefs wasn't accessible but maybe we're talking
about different server prefs.
There is an icon on my dock for server preferences and when opened, it'll allow
me access to the more basic settings such as the server firewall, basic file
sharing settings, server status, iCal server, etc, etc.
Is this what you are referring too when you mention server preferences? Like I
said previously, it works over here on my Mac Mini server.
Thanks for any clarifications.
Matthew Campbell.

managed preferences window is inaccessible since i first started using mac

command in terminal with all its flags. It's pretty complex as you need to
make sure open directory is running properly which usually demands a robust
DNS structure amongst all your macs and especially the server, as well as
good knowledge of the unix environment.

2- Most commands help can be braught up with man followed by the command
name, in this instance mcx or mcxquery as well as checking all manifest files
that you may need apart from the os default apps available in
/system/library/coreservices/ManagedClient bundle which you open and explore
with x-code's plist editor. If you're really bent on using command line only,
 use the defaults command.

Sometimes you will also need to refresh your mcx for the preferences to take
 effect.

3- Yes there is a wake on LAN feature in system preferences which takes care
 of that.

I use ARD for deploying updates and such through my home network which is
accumulating macs as i go, great for testing all services out, but you can
wake them all either via ethernet or wifi.

Re: Lion Server

2012-01-22 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Scott,

For #3, I never let my servers go to sleep anyway. I'm pretty sure that this
is the default behaviour as well but I'm not positive. I simply make sure that
the computer never goes to sleep and that the display sleeps in a specific
amount of time, thus, there's always quick and reliable access to the server.

BTW, this is very odd, I seem to see all the messages that Yuma posts, but the
original and follow-up posts from yourself seem to be missing. I've looked at
all my settings both at workstation and ISP level and you shouldn't
automatically be eliminated. Oh well, my problem to figure out.

Have a good one.

Hello Sarai,

If you would prefer your apps to close all the windows when you quit them, go
into System Preferences and select the General pane. Look for Restore windows
when quitting and re-opening apps and uncheck the check box. That will get rid
of your problem once and for all.

THanks for the reply and that is a very curious problem.
The only reason why I wanted to know about waking machines up via the ethernet

that the computer never goes to sleep and that the display sleeps in a
specific amount of time, thus, there's always quick and reliable access to
 the server.

BTW, this is very odd, I seem to see all the messages that Yuma posts, but

Let me try to answer them as precisely as can be:

1- User preferences as in managed preferences via the MCX compositor, or
more commonly known as the workgroup manager's user preferences. All of the
managed preferences window is inaccessible since i first started using mac
servers on the snow leopard front. The only workaround is to dig into mcx
command in terminal with all its flags. It's pretty complex as you need to
make sure open directory is running properly which usually demands a robust
DNS structure amongst all your macs and especially the server, as well as
good knowledge of the unix environment.

2- Most commands help can be braught up with man followed by the command
name, in this instance mcx or mcxquery as well as checking all manifest
files that you may need apart from the os default apps available in
/system/library/coreservices/ManagedClient bundle which you open and explore
with x-code's plist editor. If you're really bent on using command line
 only, use the defaults command.

Yes, as a matter of fact i've laid out a quasi 10 page document on the virtues
of multi-threading voice over alongside other feature requests which wouldn't

2012-01-22 Thread ezzie bueno

Hi,

Are you sure you're not receiving any voicemails? Have you tried
looking through your Skype history for any potential voice mails?

Hey, y'all,
Are any of y'all out there able to receive y'all's Skype voice
mail messages? If so, how did you do it? I have Skype voice
mail for a little over a month and cannot receive my Skype voice
mails at all. I cannot even tell who at Skype to contact
regarding this. Gee, thanks Microsoft.

Sincerely,

to do this.
 can anyone help me out?
it should be possible without any firther kosts and, so was told, with that
Amarican i.d. the film would play correctly.
Hope to hear from you. And sorry for my english Writing, its not my mothers

Re: cannot receive Skype voice mail

2012-01-22 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Yes, I am not receiving any voice mails; and, in answer to the history
question. There are no entries showing voice mail at all. With respect, I
would not have written about the problem if I had no problem. However, I may
have perhaps discovered a work around. According to a Skype post on the tech
forum, What I have to do is to set up call forwarding and in the box where you
enter the number to be forwarded to, enter your user name. Now, there are
three edit areas where one can enter a phone number; area code, prefix and last
four digits. Question seems then to be which of these boxes to enter my Skype
name in to; and, do I then set up for forwarding or send to Voice mail? A
little weird but the ony solution I believe at the moment. I should like to
point out that I see posts on that forum suggesting I'm not the only Mac user
with this issue and the latest version of Skype beta.

Sincerely,
The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!!

Re: cannot receive Skype voice mail

2012-01-22 Thread ezzie bueno
That's interesting. I never had to set up call forwarding in
order to get Voicemail to work. It has always worked for me
without me having to do much.
