Re: problem with itunes when importing custom ring tones
Hi Falcon and Ray, Well you solved my problem. Problem was that I did not take into account the length of the ring tones. The itunes issue, not importing them into the right source table, is resolved by hitting vo space inside finder on each ringtone to import. Works like a charm. Thanks a lot guys. Simply importing the m4r files from within itunes by hitting command plus o did not work, so just have itunes set as the default m4r player, which is by default on the mac, and then when itunes sees the file, it imports it as a ringtone and it then lands into the correct table. Thanks again. Paul. On Jan 21, 2012, at 4:46 PM, Red.Falcon wrote: Hi there! I'll only add if you like! Re: problem with itunes when importing custom ring tones
Hi Ricardo, Fortunately, that was not the problem. I.e.: itunes imports just fine if you simply hit vo space on each individual ring tone you want imported. As Falcon and Ray said, it should be 30 seconds or less. If you don't take care of that, then the ring tone will import just fine, but it won't synch to the iphone, saying there were errors because the new ring tones won't play on the phone. Amadeus has a preset file type to export to an iphone ring tone, which is m4r in one simple go. It works now. Thanks for thinking along. Paul. Re: Lion Server
Hi, I agree. Static IP is the way to go. It's far more reliable and much less hassle in the long run. With respect to MCX preferences and such, I've found it much easier to use WGM than Terminal. I'm just not good enough at the Terminal to dig as deep as needed to perform these tasks using Terminal. Once you get past the initial accessibility issues in the Preferences tab of WGM, the rest is very accessible and very powerful. Just my opinion, of course and, you will probably not need this functionality anyway. Later... So, let me explain a bit about what I'm trying to do. I will keep this pretty short, but essentially I wanted to look at the possibility of setting up a VPN that I could access using my iOS devices etc. when at a location with an open WiFI, which of course there are just some things you would not do in that environment unless you had a VPN. SO, I heard a podcast where these guys explained how they did this using Lion Server and DYNDNS.org. However, the problem I had to resolve is setting up my network so I could access the VPN. Of course this means I have to get Lion Server, but also means I have to totally reconfigure things. I have a SMC gateway from COmcast and apparently the only way I can pull this off is to move my Time Capsule or AirPort Extreme into the DNZ. SO, I'd setup my AirPort in the DMZ and move all the machines behind that APple router which is how I had things setup in the past. This way I can totally bypass the SMC since I cannot put it in bridge mode unless I want to spend $15 a month for one static IP and I think not. Then I can use DYDNS or possibly the one free domain COmcast gives me as a part of my business-class acount and use that as the means to get back to my network via the VPN. Oh and the gent who set all this up is a IT security professional. So, this aut to be quite interesting. ALthough it sounds like Lion Server might add some other functionality that would be handy like updating the other Macs in the house instead of me running around updating stuff by hand. More long-term is the ability to manage iOS devices and the like as well. What would be really interesting is if I setup an iCal server and hooked everyone to that in the house, how that plays with iCloud. H, this is all quite interesting. Hi Yuma. I haven't noticed that server prefs wasn't accessible but maybe we're talking about different server prefs. Re: Lion Server
Hey TIm, THanks for the reply and that is a very curious problem. The only reason why I wanted to know about waking machines up via the ethernet port is if we were gone for longer periods of time or if I wanted to update machines on the network that may not be awake. I was also curious because this feature seemed to always be in the OS, but did not always seem to work correctly and in particular with wireless clients. Btw, did you see the note I sent you off list? I wonder if you are having any issues getting mail from me, but doubt that would have anything to do with the problem you are seeing on the list. I use ARD for deploying updates and such through my home network which is accumulating macs as i go, great for testing all services out, but you can wake them all either via ethernet or wifi. Good luck on the advanced configurations, but a good place to start is the apple documentation area. Where can I read up on the command line tools I need to access those things not accessible via the GUI. 3. Does the machine wake on requests from inbound connections via the wired interface? I have never seen a Mac wake on lan via the WiFI. As a previous snow leopard server user, the integrated server suite isn't as comprehensive but if you are just looking to deploy standard services over your home network it does the job. It could have some general improvements in the interface, and user preferences aren't accessible though you can workaround it via the unix shell. If you do want more advanced control, you definetely need unix knowhow but having that in tow makes the server pretty damn powerful. There are no power management controls yet which is my main gripe, but it seems to manage it rather well by default as i have quite a few devices hooked to it and they all cycle only when necessary. Hope this gives you an overview. Re: voice over's single thread issue
Yes, as a matter of fact i've laid out a quasi 10 page document on the virtues of multi-threading voice over alongside other feature requests which wouldn't have made it in Lion in any case during testing period. Hopefully these observations and detailed analysis of voice over in regards to its potential and change in daily life, backed with figures, would help process the features faster. I find this a real drag and quite surprising that no multithreading has been yet implemented in voice over. Re: cannot receive Skype voice mail
Yes, I am not receiving any voice mails; and, in answer to the history question. There are no entries showing voice mail at all. With respect, I would not have written about the problem if I had no problem. However, I may have perhaps discovered a work around. According to a Skype post on the tech forum, What I have to do is to set up call forwarding and in the box where you enter the number to be forwarded to, enter your user name. Now, there are three edit areas where one can enter a phone number; area code, prefix and last four digits. Question seems then to be which of these boxes to enter my Skype name in to; and, do I then set up for forwarding or send to Voice mail? A little weird but the ony solution I believe at the moment. I should like to point out that I see posts on that forum suggesting I'm not the only Mac user with this issue and the latest version of Skype beta. Sincerely, The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!!
