lousy web page

2014-04-10 Thread Jim Gatteys
Hi all!
I am trying to use my supermarket's web page to read the current weekly ad
specials. Just wondered if somebody would take a look at this page to see if
you have any ideas.
Just general feedback would be good as well. I think its a pretty poorly
designed web page and I've talked to the store several times with no success.
I can find popup buttons with the departments listed such as dairy, produce and
the like but once there there is an image and truncated text info. Sometimes
if I mouse over the information I can get it to read a better description.
This is not always reliable. Any ideas would be very helpful.

Hi Jim,

I've just visited the page of your supermarket. I'm afraid you are right: I
was able to choose the department but thereafter things get complicated. I too
can read only a part of the text label for an item. I wonder whether the
labels are also truncated for a sighted user who probably has an advantage over
you because they can see the image of the product. I had trouble selecting
further pages unless of course it was because there was no more than one page
of products. I visited bakery department.

I tried to set Safari to imitate a different browser under develop menu but
that did not seem to improve matters. I have no more suggestions.

more on my keychain problem

2014-04-10 Thread Caitlyn and Maggie
Hi,
Last week I wrote in with a problem with my keychain.

On my MBA, somehow my keychains got out of synch. I got suggestions from this
list on how to fix this, and I thought it was fixed, but yesterday it started
happening again. I got security alerts asking me to enter the keychain
password for both local items and for log ins.

Sooo, I googled the problem and got directed to an apple help page on fixing it.

What I had to do is to go into the system library, find the keychains folder,
and then delete a file with a very long file name that is particular to each
mac. In my case, this was the only file with this long string of letters, so
it was easy to find. After that, you immediately have to restart the mac.

After this, to fix the log in keychain, open the keychain access app in the
utils folder of your applications folder. here, go into preferences and under
general, pick the option for resetting your log in keychain. After that, yuou
can pick your password and then hit ok. This will create a whole new keychain.
 Leave the app.

Now you can enter all your keychain info when prompted and everything should be
hunky dory.

I hope this wasn't too confusing and that I didn't leave out steps.

Cait

two pages questions

2014-04-10 Thread Jim Gatteys
Hi all!
I have a situation in pages where I have a line of text and part of it needs to
be at the left margin and part needs to be aligned flush right. When I select
the text that I need to align right it moves the entire line.
Any ideas? Maybe with tabs? I have not figured out how to set a tab stop at
the right margin.

My second question is regarding using the business card templates with pages.
Has anybody successfully used the templates to create printable cards? I have
a lot of perforated card stock that I need to use.
I may have already asked this question here but can't remember.
Thanks,
Jim

Nick,

You have to build custom tokens that will match on what you are looking for.
Its easy once you Grok what is going on but a bear until you do. I probably

the amount payable? Surely in any bill there are a whole bunch of dollar

is just a subtotal or minimum payment or some other figure?

Same goes for dates. How does Hazel know which is the due date, which is the
 issued date etcetera.

Re: statusbar in 10.9.2 mavericks

2014-04-10 Thread Doug Lawlor
Hello all:
I'm getting the same problem here as well. I've got two third party items in my
status bar. The first is the dropbox icon and the second is the icon for
1Password Mini. If I Vo+Space on Dropbox I get the window opening sound and
hear the word app which is then cut off. The window closes too fast for the
screen reader to render the message. If I press Vo+Space on the 1Password Mini
icon I get the 1Password dialog where I can enter my master password. So it
seems like the problem is with the DropBox application and not with the OS.

Re: Styles context menu in pages - assigning shortcuts

2014-04-10 Thread Phil Halton
Thanks Anne, What threw me off was that the styles are called buttons, which
doesn't usually indicate an element that one can interact with. (I've been
coming across a lot of these non-standard naming of elements lately). This
makes getting to that context menu a lot easier than my method.
As to these general notes you spoke of, are they part of your Pages training
materials? I think I'd be interested in learning more about them and purchasing
the training materials if available.
I'm trying to make the transition from MS-Word to Pages and I think your
materials would make that possible. I've already transitioned from Excel to
Numbers and am favorably impressed with Numbers vs Excel. I'd like to get to
that same place with Pages. I don't want to be locked into using only one
product for what I need to do on computers.
Thanks again.

 Hello Phil,

You seem to be making life hard for yourself.

First of all, I would recommend that you have your mouse set to ignore the
other cursors. Then, set the delay to zero for speaking what's under the
 mouse.

Now for working with paragraph styles. Here's an exerpt from my general notes
 on Pages.

Renaming, deleting or setting short cuts for paragraph styles

 * Press VO-Space on the Paragraph styles button.
 * Navigate to the styles table.
 * Interact and find the style you wish to delete, rename, or for which you
want to set a short cut.
 * Interact once more and navigate right once.
 * Bring the mouse.
 * If you hear menu button, press VO-Space to open the menu.
 * Otherwise, scoot the mouse away somewhere by swiping a finger across the
trackpad and bring the mouse again.
 * This time you should hear menu button, so press VO-Space.
 * Select the appropriate action from the menu and press Return.
 * If you are renaming the style, just type the new name.
 * If you are deleting the style it will be deleted.
 * If you're adding a short cut, choose the one you want from the submenu and
 press Return.

 Cheers,

 Anne

I spent some time today trying to figure out the styles procedures in Pages.
After reading the help files extensively, I tried to locate the context menu
for the styles in the paragraph styles table of the styles popup and here's
 what I found.

by setting VO to speak text under the mouse with a short delay, I routed the
mouse to the style button, then slowly moved the mouse right until I found
menu. that's the context menu and clicking it brings up the menu where I
could rename, delete, update the style etc and also assign shortcuts.
It's tricky though, I found that hiding all other apps first helps. Also,
routing the mouse the something like the title style, and then slowly
dragging down, I could find each style in the style list, and then drag
right from the style I wanted.
Sometimes I had to go a long way right and even went off the window, then
slowly back left I would hear popup and then a little further left I'd
 find the menu button.

It appears that, visually speaking, it is a list with the style name and an
arrow/submenu symbol at the far right of the menu item. so dragging exactly
straight is necessary so as not to slip down or up onto another styles menu
button. If in doubt, I simply moved left until I heard the style name, then
straight right again onto the associated menu button.

with some practice I was able to reliably find the context menu button for
any style and assign a shortcut (F1 thru F8).

For all I know, this is old hat to all you Pages veterans, but it's a
discovery for me. I also found how jumping to the formatter will deselect
any text in the body area unless you turn off cursor tracking. I don't know
the full significance and implications of this yet, but I have at least
discovered the deselecting problem and can account for it.

Does anyone care to elaborate on any of this stuff for a new Pages user,
and potential convert from MS Word?
 Thanks,

BTW: I have a 1 hour Pages one to one training session coming up in a few
weeks and I'm going to put that Apple store trainer through his paces. in
particular, I going to grill him on working the whole styles question. I
have found that it is a big help to have a pair of eyes supposedly
well-versed in the software looking on and commenting as I try to work this
 thing.

Re: statusbar in 10.9.2 mavericks

2014-04-10 Thread Teresa Cochran
Yes, it seems to go away when I move VO focus away from it. I wonder if this is
a specific VO feature? It's interesting that sometimes when I use
vO-shift-space to activate the Dropbox window, VO announces: interacting with
tray popup. This is a special interface, and most likely has been made
specifically accessible in this case.

Re: Accessible Packet Sniffers?

2014-04-10 Thread Doug Lawlor
Hi Alex,
I don't know of a Mac specific utility, but I used to use a console utility
called mmap quite a few years ago when I was doing a lot of experimenting
with Linux. I don't have the links handy but do a search for a package called
home-brew. It is a packaging system for Mac OS that will allow you to install a
huge list of unix utilities that Apple does not provide. Nmap may be among the
list of packages available through Homebrew. You can find Homebrew through
Github.

Re: getting started with garageband

Interact with it VO-Arrow to fro between the Bar, Beats, Tics. Set each
one, as desired, by arrowing up down. Remember, if you play the track again,
you change all of this. I've made this easier by setting some hot spots, which
are very stable in this version of VoiceOver GarageBand.

With your loops, just find the one you want, copy it to the clipboard with
Command-C, move to the Regions area, paste with Command-V. No need for all
that dragging dropping. It works, for me, every time.

Hope this helps,

CJ

Hello Jim,

This was a hard nut to crack but here's how to sort out the alignment.

* Type the text you want to have at the left then jump to the Formatter.
* Select layout and interact with the scroll area.
* Go down to Tab stops and expand it with VO-Space.
* Click the Add tab stop button and interact with the table.
* Bring the mouse to the field showing the position of the tab stop and
Double-click using VO-Shift-Space.
* Type in either 16 for centimeters or 4.5 for inches.
* Interact with the field that says Alignment Left and bring the mouse.
* Turn on Mouse keys.
* Move the mouse right by pressing the letter o on a laptop or the 6 key on an
extended keyboard 52 times then click with the letter i or the 5.
* Move the mouse down the way with either k or 2 until you hear Right then
click with i or 5.
* You should now turn Mouse keys off again.
Back in your document, navigate to the end of your line and press the Tab key.
* You can now enter the second part of your line and the new text will be right
aligned.

It took my husband and me over an hour to figure this one out and I need to
report it to Apple.

Cheers,

2014-04-10 Thread Jim Gatteys
Hey Anne!
thanks a lot for taking the time to figure that out. I got as far as setting
the position of the tab stop but couldn't do the alignment part.
I have emailed apple accessibility as well to tell them that this really would
be a good thing to fix.
Thanks again,
Jim

Hi Jim
Maybe I missed something or I'm off base or something, but have you used the VO
v command to turn on VoiceOver's announcing attributes. When I check this, I
turn two things on. I first turn on where it says When Status Changes--right
now mine is set to do nothing, but if I use the up and down arrows I can get
play tone or speak. I usually use speak. The other thing I change when I want
to check format is Text Attributes; it has the same choices. Then I press
ESCAPE to get out. I set both of these options to check for format.

Family Trees

2014-04-10 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all,

Has anyone researched their family tree and used any Mac apps to build your
tree?

I'm doing a lot of googling, ancestry .com, family search org. I'd like an
easy to use program to actually type in the information and build my family
tree. I have it going on ancestry right now, but I don't find it easy to read
 follow.

Thanks so much,
Traci

Re: iSee - eBook on how to use Apple products from a blind perspective

2014-04-10 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi,
Coming late to this, but I absolutely agree. It's the worst example of iBook
accessibility I've ever seen. Pity, because it's a great book but really very
difficult to read with VO. Personally, I would not have released it in this
state. Sorry if that sounds blunt, but it's how I feel.
