Re: dictation question

2014-06-11 Thread Gabriele Battaglia

Hi All.

Referring to a iMac27, localized in italian, with Mavericks.

I've never been succesful with dictation. I tried both advanced (used offline
also) and normal (where you must be connected to the net), the second one
gives me some better results but it is absolutely failing compared to the
dictation on iOS.

Anyone else got my some experience? Any tips and tricks to get it better?

Gabriel.

Re: Bluetooth Barcode Scanners and Digit-Eyes

2014-06-11 Thread Mike Busboom
Hi, Erik,

It is great to know that Digit-Eyes developers realised that some people would
prefer using a barcode scanner as opposed to the iPhone camera. To your
knowledge, can this scanner be successfully used for other purposes, or is it
strictly limited to barcode scanning applications?

Your input has been very helpful to me; thank you!

Most other bar code readers act as a HID device. That means the I device
treats them as a bluetooth keyboard. The digit-eyes web site can use them,
but HID devices are not intergrated into the digit-eyes app.

I have only one issue with the kdc and that is it frequently has to be
repared with the I device. I had planned to work on this, but I haven't had
the time and now I'm going to lose access to the equipment.

 Hi Mike,

The one you need is the kiamtac kdc410I. You can have it on amazon for
about 330 bucks. There are two versions of this scanner. Make sure you get
the I version. The standard version pares with the iphone, but only as a
HID device. Essentially it acts like a keyboard and that is it. The I
version is fully intergrated with digit-eyes. They are the same price too.

I have a sheet here that lets you adjust the scan time which I can send you
once you have your kdc. Default is two seconds and for me, I've found that
I need a bit mor time than that usually.

Re: Bluetooth Braille Displays

2014-06-11 Thread Eugenia Firth
I have not had problems with my Mac waking from the Braille Edge. The Focus 14,
if it turns itself off because it has been too long, it has to be turned back
on, and then VoiceOver will connect again automatically. As for updating, the
Braille Edge updates on the Mac fine. You just save out to a SD card and follow
the instructions on the Braille Edge. As for me, when it comes time to update
my Focus 14, I will have to get someone else to do it since I refuse to put
Windows on my Mac just for that. I don't need Windows for anything else.

Re: Bluetooth Braille Displays

2014-06-11 Thread Teresa Cochran
I'm lucky in that respect that my husband uses Windows. I borrow his computer
when I need to update my Focus 40 Blue Classic. This is the only thing I truly
rely on Windows to do.

From what I can gather, the different displays have different firmware
versions from Freedom Scientific. The version number for mine is 4.59, but
this is different from the newer displays.

 Hi there
If I had it to do over again, I would wait a while before getting any of the
focuses. First of all, you have to use Windows to update them. That may not
be a problem for you, but it is a pain for me. Second of all, right now some
of us are experiencing really big problems. Focus display with getting the
focuses to pair with the Mac. I hear that is going to be changed when next
update comes around, and I sure hope so.
I do not have the same problems with my Braille edge 40. I had a problem

Re: a good youtube player for the mac?

I used to use Mactubes, but I then discovered Youview, which is far superior.
The only thing is that it won't let you save videos until you make a donation
to the developer, much like an in-app purchase. You can give only a dollar or
two, though, and that should unlock the feature. Aside from that, it works
wonderfully, and seems more stable and easy to use than Mactubes.

Re: credit card devices that work with the IPhone.

2014-06-11 Thread Alex Hall
You are looking for the Square credit card reader. It is free, and Square takes
a small percentage of every transaction you make as payment. It connects to
your headphone jack, so generally people plug it in, turn VO off, have the
customer swipe their card and then sign their name on the screen, then remove
the card reader and re-enable VO. Unfortunately, there is no headphone jack on
the reader, so there is no way to hear VO while conducting a transaction.

[cfsp key=adsense_336x280]Apple appears to be removing many of the
popular music downloading apps from the iOS App Store, including those
that allowed users to obtain files from third-party file sharing sites,
Richard Padilla reports for MacRumors. The move is likely in an attempt
to push the iTunes Store and iTunes Radio, as well as to clean up the
App Store ahead of an overhaul in iOS 8.

A search for the term 'music download' in the App Store displays a
message inviting users to try out iTunes Radio, Padilla reports.
Previously, the same search would show results for a number of apps
that could download music and audio files from websites such as
Soundcloud and YouTube, with many appearing on the App Store's 'Top
 Charts' section.

Padilla reports, Some developers have also noted that Apple has asked
them to remove audio downloading functionalities from their app, perhaps
 to prevent potential piracy.

Re: [New post] Apple removing music downloading apps from App Store

2014-06-11 Thread Randy george
I usually don't chime in on these sorts of things but had a few
thoughts as I see both sides.

1. Sending multiple emails with short updates does tend to clutter up
an in-box and do take time to delete; especially for those of us who
travel for work and view/remove our email via our iPhone.
2. That being said, the information does tend to be interesting, so
perhaps a compromise can be reached?
3. Would it be possible to place all updates in a daily digest, as
opposed to sending them individually? Or perhaps an apple OS/IOS
update list serve could be created just for this purpose? I do tend
to view this list as a sort of tech-support list for blind users of
Mac products, not a list for every tidbit of potential information.
Remember, much of this information is rhumors, not verified
information.

Thanks,
Randy

Assuming this is true, this is one of my pet peeves about IOS, Apple
decides they no longer want something on their devices, so they remove

Re: [New post] Apple’s Swift is instant hit among top programming languages

2014-06-11 Thread Barry Hadder
One of the things I find fascinating about this is that no one had any clue
that this was coming. They’ve obviously been working on this for years and it
never leaked.

It’s going to be very interesting to see what an impact this has on the
programming community as a whole and not just the apple development community.
Objective C became just a nitch language and never really was adopted outside
of Apple. I’m not sure that’s going to be the case here. As for as I know,
this is the first programming language that acts like a scripting language, but
generates processor native code.
Thanks for the post.

[cfsp key=adsense_336x280]Apple's new Swift language, featuring
modern-day development capabilities for building OS X and iOS
applications, is likely to find swift, high placement in assessments of
programming language popularity, Paul Krill reports for InfoWorld.

Both the Tiobe and PyPL indexes already have plans to accommodate
Swift, Krill reports. 'A preview shows that its first rating will
probably in the top 20 by [the July Tiobe index]. Swift is a natural and
long-awaited next step of Apple,' this month's Tiobe index description
said. The monthly index, which gauges language popularity via a formula
assessing searches on languages on sites like Google, Wikipedia, and
YouTube, has shown Swift's predecessor, the Objective-C language,
ranking not far behind C and Java in language popularity in recent years.

In the rival PyPL index, which looks at how often language tutorials
are searched on in Google, a representative already has done a brief
assessment on Swift, Krill reports. 'Yes, it would come in ninth
position, based on the first week of data since its announcement,' said
Pierre Carbonnelle, who oversees the index... With a 6.6 percent share,
Objective-C ranks eighth on the PyPL index, which notes the language has
 been climbing in popularity.

Partitioning

2014-06-11 Thread Tristan
Hi,

I partitioned my MBA's drive in order to make a partition for betas and
testing purposes. Half way through, I decided to simply use an external
solidstate drive instead, because partitioning an already small SSD (256 GB)
will just hurt my productivity on the main side of things. I removed the 50
GB partition I'd made, then jumped the Macintosh HD partition back up to
250.14 GB (which is how big the drive is). Oddly enough, before I did
partition, the Macintosh HD was showing up as 250.66, not 250.14, so I'm not
entirely sure where the other .52 went.

It did this fine, and I rebooted to ensure my changes had a clean slate to
work on. Here's the weird part though. Before entering this whole
partitioning thing, I had about 57 GB used out of 256 GB. Now, pressing
command+I on the Macintosh HD shows that I have 250.14 GB total, and 175 GB
is used. Checking it a few moments later, it's now at 179 GB used, with only
70 gb free. It's slowly increasing!

What is going on? Something is sucking up my disk space and I can't figure
it out. I've checked activity monitor and any other things I've downloaded,
so I highly doubt it's anything maliscious.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

No. According to several users, it is a rare splitter that works; most don't.
Why this is I have no idea. Bluetooth headphones are similarly ineffective,
since iOS switches to the headphone jack per bluetooth when a device is
connected to the jack.

Re: Question about VM processor and memory allotment

2014-06-11 Thread Mike Arrigo
Usually the default works fine, but, give Windows half of what you
have. So, if you have a quad core processor, set fusion for duel core.
If you have a duel core processor, set it for one core.

Hi.

I have a Mac Mini, i7 with six gig of memory until I can upgrade to 16

four processors? How should I divide them between Windows and Mavericks
for optimum performance? Thanks.

Re: Bluetooth Barcode Scanners and Digit-Eyes

2014-06-11 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi again Mike,

The kdc is only for scanning bar codes. It has a laser scanner that is
exclusively for that purpose.

For OCR applications such as sorting mail, there are three good products, the
standscan, the justscan, and the scan doc. I can tell you a bit about some of
these in another thread if you are interested.

It is great to know that Digit-Eyes developers realised that some people
would prefer using a barcode scanner as opposed to the iPhone camera. To
your knowledge, can this scanner be successfully used for other purposes, or
is it strictly limited to barcode scanning applications?

Your input has been very helpful to me; thank you!

Hi Mike, It's as I said. The kdc is fully intergrated with digit-eyes.
Once pared it beeps the bar codes and instantly finds the information

Most other bar code readers act as a HID device. That means the I device
treats them as a bluetooth keyboard. The digit-eyes web site can use them,
but HID devices are not intergrated into the digit-eyes app.

I have only one issue with the kdc and that is it frequently has to be
repared with the I device. I had planned to work on this, but I haven't had
the time and now I'm going to lose access to the equipment.

 Hi Mike,

The one you need is the kiamtac kdc410I. You can have it on amazon for
about 330 bucks. There are two versions of this scanner. Make sure you
get the I version. The standard version pares with the iphone, but only as
a HID device.

Hello Cheryl,

That's a lot of useful information. My Basic was purchased as a used machine

I thought about replying within the message but decided that might not work
so well for people who are trying to read fast. So I'll address each point
 here at the top.

 1. My cable came with the Index basic and I didn't have to go find a prolific
driver and cable. Maybe that is part of what the driver and application do
though I do also happen to have prolific cables because of using brltty.
Maybe it's been fixed but from Lion on, sometimes the official prolific
driver caused problems; for instance, unplugging it without killing brltty
first caused spontaneous reboot of my computer and I learned by searching
online that this was not a brltty problem but was related to the prolific
driver's interaction with the OS. And on one of my computers, installing the
prolific driver did not result in a cu.usbserial or any other cu. device in
/dev. So I looked around online and found that somebody had done a driver,
though I had to directly install the kernel extension instead of just running
an installer. The naming ends up being different from what the official
driver did but it does start with a cu prefix. Btw I think that keyspan
cables are no longer useable at all; I have a few of those too. The change in
driver solved both issues. I'll post the links in case anybody needs them.
But because I kind of went down a rabbit trail here let me again say that the
cable that came with the Index Basic I have worked out of the box for me
along with the driver and application.

 2. Actually, I used to compile nfbtrans on my Mac in terminal just as I did
in linux. I didn't actually use it for embossing but it could be done. I
think I had help in doing a patch at one time for the Mac but I don't know if
I still have it or if it would still work - this was a long time ago.

 3. In addition to louis, which was done by Greg Kearney in order to implement
liblouis on the Mac,, there are liblouis and liblouisutdml, which I use on
the command line after compiling and installing. There are a few little
quirks but I was able to install them on the Mac. I also now have them
installed on an old powerpc Mac mini which I have turned into a debian linux
machine. Unless Greg has fixed the problem in louis,, the right tables aren't
being loaded for Spanish - I don't know about other languages. Part of the
problem had to do with UTF8 character sets but I would have to go back and
look at my notes and email exchanges with John Boyer and the related email
lists to really give an accurate explanation. The result was that most of my
accents were not being translated if I tried to use Louis but I would instead
get these codes offset by single quotes if I remember correctly.

 3. I think that somewhere with using liblouis and liblouisutdml and maybe
other components, there is a program for doing rtf but I haven't ever tried
it. While I do use liblouis and company successfully, it is not automatic
conversion by any means. I have to do a lot of formatting within the text
file to get what I want in the braille file and even then I have to do
editing in the braille file too. Some of this may be my ignorance as to the
proper way to do things but just be warned if you use it, there is definitely
 work and problem-solving involved.

 Hth.

 Hello,

I have just got an Index Basic going on my Mac.

Firstly I needed a USB to serial lead. I understand that there are 2
chipsets supported. I was lucky that one that I had for some time was a
supported one. I had to find a Prolific driver and install it. It wasn't
difficult. It generates a /dev/cu.usbserial device which you send the
 braille for embossing.

Not sure if I needed the Index driver too but I installed it.

I had used nfbtrans on a linux command line so grabbed that. However, it was
not going to work on the Mac. There is a Mac patch copy floating about which
I eventually found. This works OK but is limited.

Then there is Louis a GUI accessible program. This works too. However, only
with text files. RTF and HTML etc files just seem to crash and don't work
for me. It does enable the translation of different braille tables.

So check out nfbtrans if you don't mind working from the command line or
Louis if you want a GUI interface.
