My new Synology NAS. Great product, NASty accessibility 30/05/2014 by Jonathan Mosen http://mosen.org/index.php/author/jmosen/ A chance remark by a friend of mine a few weeks ago saw me embarking on quite a journey. He asked me if I had one of the Synology NAS (network attached storage) devices. When I indicated that not only did I not have one, but I wasn't familiar with that manufacturer, he launched into quite a soliloquy about how incredible they were, and how having one was like having your own Linux-based server in your house. My friend Gordon knows his tech, so I decided to bring myself up to speed. Coincidentally, we had this conversation just as the idea of the Mosen Channel http://mosenexplosion.com/ was crystallising. I've kept a lot of my terrestrial and Internet radio shows over the years, mainly so I can pass them on to subsequent generations of my family. As I was going through the extensive archives, I was reminded about a glaring flaw in my backup strategy. I take backing up very seriously, but one area where my approach fell short was that there was no off-site backup. If my main network drive failed, I have copies of my irreplaceable data in other locations, but all those locations were in my house. Having a backup elsewhere would guard against data loss in the case of some sort of disaster. I'm not so concerned with music I could get again, but it's the personal mementos, not just radio stuff but home recordings of my kids, that I really care about. When researching this question, I finally found a few back-up services that would allow you to back up network attached storage to the cloud. Not many do, and quite a few that do charge a premium for the feature. These services varied widely in their accessibility, and I didn't like having the application running in the background all the time. Some of them impacted quite markedly on system performance. They also demonstrated just how easy it was for the NAS I was using, the Western Digital MyBook Live, to get bogged down. The processor in it is on the old side now, and if a couple of Time Machine backups and another cloud backup package were writing to the drive, it was affecting data access. The Synology Disk Station products are powered by their own operating system, Disk Station Manager (DSM for short). When I started to research the feature set of DSM, I was delighted to learn that by installing a number of packages, which effectively are apps for the OS, Synology Disk Stations can be backed up to a number of cloud services, including Amazon Glacier. Glacier is an extremely cheap form of mass-storage, designed for occasional retrieval, so it's ideal for making a cheap backup of last resort. I was impressed to read glowing reviews of Synology Disk Stations by almost everybody. Many IT people I trust said Synology make the best NAS products on the market, period. Looking at the wide range of models of Disk Station available, it reminded me a bit of Nokia's Symbian days. There are quite a few models with subtle differences and models full of numbers and letters. Synology offers a handy feature on their site where you can indicate what features are important to you, and you get a narrowed down list of products based on your specifications. Having done some reading, I placed my order for my first Synology product last week, and promptly cancelled it. My usual rule of thumb is that after researching a product range and determining what I'll buy, I make the purchase online, and busy myself reading the user guide and doing whatever research I can until the product arrives. Right after placing the order, I stumbled upon a very helpful feature on the Synology website. You can actually log in to one of their NAS devices, and experience the user interface for yourself. Actually what you describe doesn't sound that tedious or complex and would be quite cool if it works, which it obviously does. Do you need to use another program, Sound Flower I think, to also set this whole thing up or is that only if you want to record your Mac's audio as well? No idea why I'd want to do that but just saying. :) Jenine Stanley dragonwalke...@gmail.com On Aug 26, 2014, at 7:47 PM, Jonathan Mosen jmo...@mosen.org wrote: Hi Jenine, if you are going to be doing this sort of thing for broadcast purposes or for anything other than your own archival purposes, I'd highly recommend using Audio Highjack pro to record your Skype calls. You can choose the file format you want to use. This is important, because most file formats are lossy. If you save a Skype call in a lossy format, like MP3 or something compressed, you will eventually have to bring it into a sound editor, where it will get edited, saved, and eventually compressed a second time to a lossy format. The more times you do this, the more artefacts you'll introduce to your recording. You can tell Audio Highjack to save in .aiff format, which is the Mac equivalent of a .wav file and is therefore completely uncompressed.I know you also use Amadeus Pro, so let me talk you through how I use the two together. I set up Audio Highjack so that my voice is on one channel, and the Skype caller's voice is on the other. The advantage of doing this is that you can then bring the file into Amadeus Pro, and put each channel in a separate track. Once that's done, convert each track from a mono to a stereo track, and you have you and the Skype caller in both ears. Because you are both on separate tracks, you can apply different effects as appropriate. For example, normalise each track separately so you are both sounding similar in volume. If the Skype caller sounds too bright or too dull, you can apply equalisation just to the caller, and not to you. Finally, if you wish, you can pan each track to get a stereo effect. Then when you're done getting things sounding just how you want, mix it all down back onto one stereo track. It sounds a bit complicated writing it down, but i do this all the time and now it's just a routine. The other advantage of Audio Highjack is that it isn't specific to Skype. I use it to record FaceTime Audio calls and calls from more obscure chat programmes where appropriate, so it's a very powerful tool that doesn't lock you in. And finally, while I am not testing Yosemite, I would think Audio Hijack will work with the new continuity features of iOS 8 and Yosemite. This means you can make a call on your iPhone, and record it on your Mac with Audio Hijack. If you have a carrier that offers HD Voice for instance, then you'll get brilliant sound doing that. Hope that's of some help. Audio Hijack is one of the coolest things about a Mac I reckon. VMWare has an article about how to manually uninstall. Generally you put the app in the trash and then check the numerous preference folders/files to delete any lurking leftovers. http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_UScmd=displayKCexternalId=1017838 CB On 8/26/14, 4:36 PM, Kawal Gucukoglu wrote: It's best to forget about Windows if you are using the Mac. I normally use a full sized Apple keyboard while at the office with a numeric keypad on the right. So, this means that the caps lock key doesn't play a role here for the most part and everything works well for me using the JAWS desktop layout. I have found that if I use the insert key on the numeric keypad or the caps lock key while in Laptop mode that none of the keys past the J key work. Meaning, I can do things like insert-t, caps lock plus s, etc., etc. but anything on the right-hand side of the keyboard doesn't work. Something interesting to note is that the laptop keys don't work whether using caps lock or the insert key on the numeric keypad past the letter J. Has anyone run into this issue at all? If so your advice is hugely appreciated. I am wondering if the newer versions of Karabiner or Seil have broken something here? Re: Service battery?
There's an app called Battery Health that can give you a ton of info about your battery, including the general health of your battery based on the number of charge cycles it's gone through, the max charge it can take, etc. I just found it yesterday when it was mentioned on a podcast. This app exposes a lot of the battery metrics you can't get to with the built-in battery/charge menu. Re: Service battery?
My wife's ancient 7 year old MacBook gives this as it hardly lasts an hour on battery. I'm hoping the tape continues to hold it together until we can afford to replace it with a new one. That said, from terminal you can find out the stats on your battery by copying and pasting the following line: ioreg -l | grep -i Capacity You should get back something like this: | | MaxCapacity = 6716 | | CurrentCapacity = 6648 | | LegacyBatteryInfo = {Amperage=415,Flags=7,Capacity=6716,Current=6648,Voltage=12575,Cycle Count=197} | | DesignCapacity = 6900 which if you skip through all the Vertical Line junk you'll find the Max Capacity (in mA), Current Capacity and Design Capacity. The above is from my fairly new MacBook Pro. Re: recording Skype calls
Hi Chris, How do you convert files to mp3 using itunes? Do you mind running me through the steps? Many thanks. It's in the file menu, open with, and then there's a bunch of different options to choose from. This does create a rather huge mp3 file which I then compress using mp3 converter. I found that if I skip this step and used mp3 converter directly on the .mov file, only one side of the conversation got converted. I don't understand why this is. I would rather not have to use two steps, but it works for me and until I get some mental space to find another solution it does the job. I got mp3 converter from the app store, but there are many other apps like it out there. Cheers Lisette On 25/08/2014, at 10:34 am, Jenine Stanley dragonwalke...@gmail.com wrote: Thanks much. It makes a .mov file (even if you choose not to record the video), which is quite a large file. I convert this to mp3 and then compress it some. The mov file plays fine in quick look (press space on the file to open). Definitely money well spent for me. I know people will say they use audio highjack pro, but I can't get my head around that programme I'm afraid. This literally records all the voices without you having to turn anything on at the start of the call. I find using headphones ensures my voice is recorded better than if I use the speaker on the mac. Good luck. Re: how to change a page document to a word document on the mack using voice over
Becky, In Pages, this is easy. Go to File menu Select Export From the submenu, choose Word... You'll be prompted again for the format you wish to export to, Word will be selected, but to double check, VO arrow to the Word option and confirm. You'll be presented with the typical save dialog box. Choose the location, change the name if desired and press return. Your file will be saved as a .doc file. Has anyone ever used Band Camp?
Good day/night all. A friend sent me a link to his music on a site called band camp. There is an app, but it looks like it cannot be used until one has an account, and one does not get an account until one purchases music from the site. I attempted to purchase a song or two of his, but though the buttons are clearly labeled: buy now and add to cart nothing appears to be happening. I cannot find the cart after adding to it, and check out is not giving me anything either. I have read their support materials, but unless I am missing something, I am not finding a way to purchase the items. Could this be a VoiceOver issue, even though all buttons appear to be labeled? Has anyone ever used this who can provide me with assistance? I cannot locate any contact links for getting to an actual human for assistance. http://www.bandcamp.com Christine -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. The only thing I think I can say I don't like about Apple Maps, is that if you want it to announce turn-by-turn directions, unless there's something I'm missing, you have to have it running in the foreground, which is a serious inconvenience, considering the fact that most people multi-task with their phones. Re: Has anyone ever used Band Camp?
I once bought an album from there and once a single song, both times using safari on my Mac. I don't remember having a particular problem with it so I can't really tell you anything special I did. The app was accessible for playing my songs though you can also download the song to your computer from the website once you purchase and purchasing as I recall does not require an acount but using the app does; then you can see your collections on the website and in the app. . At first there was an issue with the back button not being seen in voiceover on my i-devices so I would be stuck in an album and not be able to go back and see the single song I had bought that was not in the album. I emailed them about the problem. they did reply. and I don't where whether this happened as a result or not, but shortly after the app was updated and the back button became accessible. If I get time I will go back and pretend I am going to purchase something to see if there are any special instructions you should have. -- Cheryl I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf. I was able to use an email address to report the problem with the app as I recall but again, I don't now remember the process so it must not have seemed difficult to me at the time. -- Cheryl I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf. Re: Has anyone ever used Band Camp?
You don't specify if you were trying to buy a song on an i-device or on a Mac computer. Here's what I did on my Mac with Safari. I'm writing down the steps as I do them. I searched for the artist I wanted and then went to the link for the album and then the individual song (there was a buy now for the whole album too). I found the buy button but actually I interacted because there were four items, so I interacted to make sure I specifically did vo-space on the button. It brought up a dialog where I could pick my price ($1 being the default but even if the default is your choice you still have to put that in the blank; otherwse you won't go to your shopping cart and you may not see the reminder to put it in a price; that may be what you left out.) and where I could put in a a discount code or ask to be emailed when the artist releases new music. I found the checkout now button and further on an add to cart button with various choice about checking out now or later etc. I did vo-space on add to cart; I could have just bought but I wanted to check everything for you. Then I found my shopping cart and did vo-space on the checkout button and found myself at the paypal options (you don't have to have a paypal account to do this). From there you should be okay. I suspect that you just assumed you didn't need to type a price in the field if you were going to pay the default. If you still have problems, post again more specifically. If you did this from your i-device instead of your Mac, I can probably take a look at that approach for you too. Of course you had a direct link so didn't have to do the searching steps. Hope this helps. -- Cheryl I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf. I got crumpled wads of tear-stained paper thrown in the trash! Need a Tip for the new Garage-BAnd.
Hi all! First of all, thanks hugely to the dude who gave me the tip a while back about using the comma nd period to do what the arrow-keys used to do even though VO doesn't speak it. That totally got me back up and going, and was a huge help! But now I'm kind of stuck again, and I'm hoping some one can help? So I've got a loop that extends beyond where I want the end of my song to be (it didn't before, but it does since I imported it into GB10.whatever it is now and started working on it there). And I used to be able to fix that by just resizing the loop or region, but resizing doesn't seem to quite work the same way now! I mean, the VO command seems to be the same, VO+shift+accent, but the resize function itself doesn't seem to do quite the same thing as it used to. And I can't detect any other way to make my loop cut off at the end of my song. :-( What am I missing? :-( And, since they seem to have changed what a lot of functions are called, I couldn't quite figure out where to look in the help files either! :-) Thanks! RE: Help Needed on Uninstalling An Application from my Mac Running Maverick
This is exceelent, Chris. Thank you so much. It worked like acharm. Fortunately for me, I had version 3.x of VM Ware. Believe it or not, I've never uninstalled a single app. On the other hand, I've only installed 5 third party apps and use all but VM Ware Fusion. So I guess that's a good average, eh? (smile) I know that Apple states that all one need do to uninstall an app is to simply put it into the Trash but I have heard through the years that one must do more than this to really uninstall it. I'll be honest, my fear of uninstalling incompletely or incorrectly comes from my many years of working with Windows which, as many of you may know, can turn ugly with just the click of a mouse. In years gone by, if one didn't uninstall something correctly, it could cause major startup problems. While I'm certain this is not the case in OSX, some fears are difficult to dispel.
