get it from the App Store then I may even buy it over Pages which I also
bought a while back.

I frankly find Preview totally worthless unless you just want to hear
your file as a data dump. I usually need to read more carefully and
don't want to just hear a text string with no ability to start and
stop, spell words etc. PDF has been one of the most annoying aspects
of the Mac.

Nisus Writer Pro and shortcut key command was Adobe for Mac

2014-10-05 Thread Colin Matthews
Hi!
Ok just in case someone finds this useful!
If you already got Nisus Writer Pro or get it!
You can set up your own keyboard shortcut to open a new document in Nisus in
the shortcut section in the Keyboard pref's in system pref's!
If you got Nisus already the option will be in the table of shortcuts and you
might have to check the checkbox as well as setting your own key combination!
Their are other shortcuts ready to use by either checking them on or giving
them a key combination like open in text edit] if someone finds that useful!

Re: adobe reader for the mac

2014-10-05 Thread David Griffith
Just to be clear ,what happens is that Nisus Writer Pro opens the PDF
document and automatically renders it into rtf assuming there is text
encoded into the PDF and it is not graphics based. This means that as
far as I am aware the vast majority of formatting options in the
originating pdf document is carried across. Then Nisus will save any
editing to rtf format but when you are finished editing you go to the
file menu and select save to pdf which reverts the document into PDF
format again for you.

I have not tried it with any forms. I am happy to test this out if
somebody can send one to daj.griff...@gmail.comn for me to test out.

Nisus is not great with tables the last time I tried so it may be a problem.

Re: A real clean install

2014-10-05 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

do you use something other than the usual system sound when you use your Mac
normally? If so, that device may not properly activate when booting from an
external source. Is it possible that your volume is simply too low to be heard
when VO turns on? When you startup from the USB source, wait the appropriate
amount of time, anywhere from one to 3 minutes depending on the sped of your
Mac and the speed of the external media connection. If you've waited that
time, press cmd-f5 and wait again for about 10 seconds. Sometimes, VO takes a
bit to pipe up if things are going on in the background. If you still don't
hear any VO speech, try pressing VO-cmd-left arrow three times then press
VO-cmd-up arrow which should turn up the volume. VO is a part of the Mac base
system, so, it should be available to you during all aspects of the
installation. I've used VO in this manner booting from a USB stick, an
external HD and even from a network installer without issues. Another option
to ensure that your volume is at a normal level is to reset your PRAM. To do
this, restart your Mac, then as the Startup Chime is sounding, hold down your
command, Option, p and r keys all at the same time. Continue holding this key
combination down, your Mac will make the Startup Chime noise again. Allow it
to make three extra Startup Chime noises, then release. Let your Mac start up
then restart it again with your bootable USB device and see if VO can be heard.

Re: adobe reader for the mac

2014-10-05 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Navigating line by line, word by word and even character by character is
totally doable in Preview. As long as you Interact with the text area, all
this is possible. It works the same as in most things like TextEdit and Pages,
Interact with the area to be read, VO-left/right reads word by word,
VO-shift-left/right reads character by character and VO-up/down reads line by
line. The key here is to actually Interact with the area and use VO
navigation, if you simply navigate to the area and let VO read, then you have
no control. If you use arrow key navigation without holding down your VO-keys,
then you don't have the same control.

If you do choose to use another pdf reader because your more comfortable with
it or that it meets your needs better, then all the power to you, but, know
that Preview does do the things that people are claiming it does not.

Re: A real clean install

2014-10-05 Thread The Believer

Hi Tim,
Thanks. I use a wired headset. I did not think of unplugging it but
once I got past the startup manager, tho volume was low, I finished the
clean install. I did not want to be pressing too many keys so struggled
along.

Boot up is much improved but still not there. Just before I did the
clean install, I did hear finder busy. I will run Activity Montor and
see if I can fix things with that.

Migration Assistant was good, I did not have to make many changes
that I did in Mountain Lion after the last backup.

Hi,

do you use something other than the usual system sound when you use your Mac
Another option
to e

nsure that your volume is at a normal level is to reset your PRAM. To do this,
restart your Mac, then as the Startup Chime is sounding, hold down your
command, Option, p and r keys all at the same time. Continue holding this key
combination down, your Mac will make the Startup Chime noise again. Allow it
to make three extra Startup Chime noises, then release. Let your Mac start up
then restart it again with your bootable USB device and see if VO can be heard.

Did you do a complete erase of your startup disk? If the clean install (no
migrated parameters of any kind) was completed on a fresh disk, I can't imagine
why there would be any slowness except for hardware issues.

Re: New Mac malware discovered; how to check your Mac for ‘iWorm’ malware

2014-10-05 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
The infection vector turned out to be pirated software, according to The Safe
Mac. That means standard procedure for dealing with it applies: just don't
install dodgy stuff, and always make sure you know what you're entering a
password for. That would, incidentally, make it a trojan, and not a worm.

Still doesn't explain 70k Macs though. Hmm.

Fair enough. I know it's a dog, but if it's been a while, just set everything

VMWare Fusion

2014-10-05 Thread Barry Abbott
Hi all. I seem to be having a problem easily moving between Windows 8.1 and OSX
Maverick. I now know thanks to you wonderful people that Control command
releases the keys so that I can easily move back to the Mac side. However,
when I Command tab back over to VMWare Fusion my keys will often lock up.
Sometimes if I press the tab key I will hear the VMWare Fusion Toolbar choices.
If I stop interacting with the toolbar I get nothing. announcements. Or if I
press the tab I will get nothing at all. Pressing the Alt F4 ( I have the
command key set to alt in windows through VMWare Fusion: I will get the bonk
sound. Control Command does not resolve this issue.

In VMWare fusion VO activity I have set the Numberpad keys to off so that JAWS
can make use of them. I have the full mac keyboard as it gives me more
flexibility on my iMac. I set my windows keys through the VMWare host.

Any ideas as to what could be causing the problem?

Thanks
Barry Abbott

Re: Any free ways to fill out pdf forms

2014-10-05 Thread Nicholas Parsons
I'm not sure that even PDFPen would do what you want it to do (i.e. integrate
with Safari and allow you to fill out the form without first downloading it).
Also, PDFPen only works with properly tagged interactive PDF forms, and there's
no guarantee that your work has properly tagged the PDF forms.

Why don't you try asking for special accommodation/reasonable adjustment to
allow you to submit your timesheet by email?

Sending Messages in iOS 8.0.2

2014-10-05 Thread Nicholas Parsons
In iOS 8.0.2 I am unable to send new messages composed in apps other than Mail
while using VoiceOver. I double tap the send button but nothing happens. This
is regardless of whether I get to the send button by swiping or by explore by
touch. If I locate the send button, turn off VoiceOver and then tap on the send
button, it works, but not with VoiceOver enabled. This only happens when
composing messages from other apps, not when composing a message in the
Messages app itself.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Is it an iOS 8 thing or was this happening
previously? Has it been reported to Apple accessibility?

Complete erase start up disk

2014-10-05 Thread Terje Strømberg
Hi,

How do you actually do a complete erase of the start up disk?

I believed i did do a complete erase a while back, but the boot camp drive is
listed in the command + r during start up - tools. Also here is Macintosh HD
and Base System drive(possible help?). The annoying part is that the Boot Camp
drive is deleted for sure. I believe this is why a new Boot Camp partition is
not possible when using the Boot Camp assistent again. Although the Time
Capsule shows there is no more Boot Camp partition. So, in the real world,
there is no Boot Camp Partition on this drive. Just in the command + r startup
- tools. I believe Boot Camp Assistent seese this false Boot Camp partition
during configuration.

Did not try Disk Maker X. Does this tool erase hard drive completely?

Take care

Erasing The BootCamp Disk and Restoring The Macintosh HD To A Single Disk

2014-10-05 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Helllo,

I have been told that if I erase the bootcamp disk that the memory would go
back into the OS start up disk or my Macintosh HD. I have gone into the disk
utility and I can select the disk to erase, but when I VO-RIGHT arrow or tab to
the target edit field it asks for me to drag and drop from the list on the left
side. Of course, I am unable to visualize where the list exists or if drag and
drop works with VO. I'm about to call Apple support on this, but if others have
gone through the process of putting the allotted GB storage back on to the
start up Macintosh HD, I would appreciate some assistance and instructions on
how to accomplish this task.

Thanks in advance.

Best,
Eileen
