Another Cool Thing About iOS 9

2015-09-18 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi guys. I don't know if anyone noticed this yet, but in settings you can now
do a search for the specific setting you want to modify. For example, if you
wanted to modify something in Voiceover, you could just type in Voiceover in
the edit field and it'll take you right there if you double tap the search
result. This beats a lot of time going to general, accessibility, and finding
Voiceover that way. To find the search edit box, find the settings heading and
flick right once. Then double tap and you can enter your search result.

Re: Slow speech with voices other than Alex

2015-09-18 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi Mary. What you could do to fix this is go to settings, general,
accessibility, Voiceover, speech, and beside the languages you have in your
rotor there should be a more info button. Double tap that and there should be a
slider that lets you set speech rate inside that language. Do that for any
additional languages you have and you should be good to go. HTH.

Slow speech with voices other than Alex

2015-09-18 Thread Mary Otten
I just upgraded the iPad to iOS 9 and reinstalled the Russian voice. I also
installed the mail Siri enhanced voice. Experimenting around, it would seem
that both of these voices are speaking much more slowly than they should based
on the speech rate that is set invoice over interestingly enough, under iOS 8
and I believe seven as well, the four invoices, such as the Russian one, would
speak at a much faster rate than the default would warrant, based on the
English speech. It seems like they've over corrected. Now, if I want a decent
Russian speech rate, I have to up the speed to more than I would have for
English, which is absurd, since I am far from a native speaker of Russian.

iTunes back up questions

2015-09-18 Thread Mary Otten
I just did a back up of my iPad preparatory to installing iOS 9. When I went to
get the update, it told me I had purchased items which should be transferred,
and did I want to continue anyway? So I canceled out and tried to find a way to
get the purchased items to transfer over. I did a "sink". That didn't do the
job. I found the purchased items in the table of playlist on the Mac. There are
a lot of things in there, and they all have checkboxes checked and dimmed. So,
I am at a loss. Deciding that all this purchased stuff is really already backed
up in iCloud and my purchased list,, I decided to proceed. However, I really
would like to know how to back up these items to my Mac
Before doing this iPad back up, I also did a back up for my iPhone, where I
have bought a very few things. I did not see any sort of warning about my items
needing to be transferred, which now makes me wonder about the integrity of
that back up. It has been a very long time since I used iTunes to back up
anything. Clearly, I'm missing something.

I also cannot type in text fields when quick nav is on. I believe in the
voiceOver Utility under commanders/quick nav, there is a check box that
says "Enable single-key webpage navigation when using Quick Nav.” You can
try unchecking this if you do not like to use single key navigation. This
feature is probably what does not allow you to type in text fields on
webpages. I use single key navigation a ton so I leave this option on.

Re: Scanning text on the MAC

2015-09-18 Thread Alex Hall
The two popular ones are Prizmo ($50--don't bother with the $100 version) or
Abbyy Fine Reader. Both seem to do well, though I haven't compared them side by
side. If you have an iOS device, I have to say that I find the KNFB Reader app
to be more convenient and just as accurate, especially now that it has a stand
mode.

Re: Braille Software for Mac??

Hmm, perhaps I should have mentioned that I’m running the Yosemety version of
Os ... finally got my password issue settled and updated the Os. So will that
Louis Braille program work on my Mac Book? I would like to mostly process my
own documents, but also use the Web Braille books from NLS from time to time

Ok, I can set off the quickness keys on the quicknav section of the

Hi Eileen!
I think it is quite good. I used Kurzweil for windows for more years than i

layout and progression of steps it works just fine for bills and mail. That's
about all I use it for any longer.

work and now that Understand it it is just fine. I don't do a lot of

Why even have code names at all? You're going to have to give the exact version
number at some point anyway, so what's wrong with, say 10.11, or 10.12? I'd
think this would be problematic since a lot of these names are not simple to
pronounce especially if your first language doesn't happen to be the same as
the language of the code name? When 10.10 came out I noticed several people who
use speech exclusively did not know how to spell Yosemite for example. Plus
it's better for consistency since iOS has no code names at all, just a version
number.

Migrating iTunes Library from PC to MacBook Air

2015-09-18 Thread Craig Werner
Greetings to the list.

Presently,my iTunes library lives on my iPhone 5 and my Windows 7 PC. I would
like to put the library on my new MacBook Air. I’m under the impression that
the Windows Migration Assistant is the best way to transfer the library. If I
use this approach, is the software accessible with a Windows screen reader?
Are there other methods of which I should be aware?

Thanks for all help.

Hey everyone, I've been doing some reading on what will be coming in
version 10.11, el Capitan, it does appear as though Apple is getting
more restrictive with each release. In 10.10 they introduced kext
signing which only allows you to install kernel extentions that are
signed by Apple. Now, in 10.11, they are introducing what is called
system integrity protection. In a nutshell, what this does is prevent
any program from accessing or binding to running processes such as the
finder or dock. One program that apparently is affected by this is
dropbox, the finder integration will no longer work. Basically, it
requires all applications to be sandboxed, even those that are
installed from outside the app store. Even if a program requests
elevated permissions where you have to type in your password, that will
no longer matter, the program will no longer have this access.
Fortunately, there will be a way to disable this from the recovery, and
that will be one of the first things I do once I upgrade.

I've got a question for you guys. If you think El Capitan is a stupid name for
an OS, what would you rather have Apple call it? The only reason they called it
El Capitan is to make additions to Yosemite.

Re: How To Downgrade iOS 9.1 Public Beta to to Current iOS 9.0 Release Without Losing Any Data

2015-09-18 Thread gs
Does downgrading from 9.1 to 9.0 affect the availability of betas for
installation? I wouldn't think it should but I still want access to the betas
if I want to try the next one. I'm really tired of 9.1 and would like to use
something more stable for a while.

On Sep 17, 2015, at 2:42 PM, M. Taylor wrote:

Hello Everyone,

I am delighted to inform you that I just successfully downgraded two iPhones
(a 5 S and a Six Plus) from iOS beta 9.1 back to the currently released iOS
9.0 via iTunes without losing any data or without having to first restore
the phones back to their factory defaults. It appears as though Apple has
built a new function into the latest version of iTunes that makes this
process simple and painless.

What a wonderful surprise and convenience for those of us who want to beta
test Apple software while having access to the latest release which, in many
cases, is one version prior to the current beta without having to reset
everything.

The following article, from 9 to 5 Mac, gives the general steps in order to
downgrade, however, the article was written before Apple added this new
functionality into iTunes. There for, I have modified step 5, reflecting
the new available option.

Just so you know, you must use the latest version of iTunes, which, as of
this post, is v12.3, on a computer in order to perform a non-destructive
downgrade to an earlier, non-beta version of iOS.

Remember, this is for those of us who were running iOS beta 9.1 who want to
downgrade our devices to the currently released and more stable version of
iOS 9.0 without first having to erase the phone.

The link to the original article is located at the end of the text.

Good Luck and Enjoy,

How To Downgrade iOS 9.1 Public Beta to to Current iOS 9.0 Release Without
Losing Any Data

iOS 9 marked the first major version of the iPhone and iPad software that
Apple opened up for public beta testing after a similar trial run with iOS
8.3 last year. As many users have noticed, Apple's public beta program is
continuing with the upcoming iOS 9.1 release available as an OTA
(over-the-air) update for non-developer testers, but many users will surely
want to hop off the beta train and onto the stable release cycle with
today's iOS 9.0 release.

Several readers have already asked about downgrading from the iOS 9.1 public
beta to today's iOS 9.0 release, and while it's possible it does come at a
cost: potentially losing some important data. If moving from iOS 9.1 public
or even dev beta to today's official iOS 9.0 release is worth it for you,
read on for a detailed guide for doing just that.

Step 1.
Ensure iCloud Is Backing Up and Syncing

While there doesn't seem to be an official path from iOS 9.1 public beta to
today's iOS 9.0 release that keeps all of your data intact, iCloud is mostly
version-agnostic in that it usually syncs and backs up important data like
contacts and notes for use on older versions of iOS. Using the iOS device
that you plan to downgrade, go to the Settings app then iCloud pane to
ensure important information like Contacts, Reminders, and Notes are all
toggled on if you plan on keeping this information.

Likely due to privacy concerns, Apple has not enabled syncing data from
the Health and Activity apps through iCloud so expect to lose this
information if downgrading. Backing up to iCloud does preserve Health and
Activity, but you won't be able to restore to iOS 9.0 using your iOS 9.1
backup unfortunately. Still, I recommend creating a full iCloud backup just
in case you have second thoughts after moving down to iOS 9.0 and want to
recover your data with iOS 9.1. While connected to power and on a Wi-Fi
Internet connection, go to Settings > iCloud > Backup and ensure iCloud
Backup is toggled on. Then tap Back Up Now to begin a full backup to iCloud.

Step 2.
Disable Find My iPhone/iPad/iPod touch

While you're in Settings > iCloud, you'll want to disable Activation Lock in
iOS 9.1 to save some time when restoring to iOS 9.0. Do this by going to
Settings > iCloud > Find My iPhone/iPad/iPod touch (depending on which
device you're using) and toggling off Find My iPhone/iPad/iPod touch which
should prompt you for your Apple ID and password used for iCloud.

Note: this may differ from your App Store password if you use a separate
account for iCloud and purchases.

Step 3.
Backup Purchases and Data to iTunes

Now that we have a few safety nets in place, it's time to connect your iOS
device to iTunes on your Mac or PC using your charging cable and put up a
few more before downgrading from iOS 9.1 to iOS 9.0. After plugging in your
iOS device, you may have to give your computer and device permission to
"trust" each other, then click the icon in the top left corner of iTunes for
managing your device.

>From here you can create a local backup to iTunes and transfer any purchases
not already saved to your computer. Even if your device is set to backup to
iCloud, you can still choose to do a manual backup her

Hey everyone, I've been doing some reading on what will be coming in
version 10.11, el Capitan, it does appear as though Apple is getting more
restrictive with each release. In 10.10 they introduced kext signing which
only allows you to install kernel extentions that are signed by Apple.
Now, in 10.11, they are introducing what is called system integrity
protection. In a nutshell, what this does is prevent any program from
accessing or binding to running processes such as the finder or dock. One
program that apparently is affected by this is dropbox, the finder
integration will no longer work. Basically, it requires all applications
to be sandboxed, even those that are installed from outside the app store.
Even if a program requests elevated permissions where you have to type in
your password, that will no longer matter, the program will no longer have
this access. Fortunately, there will be a way to disable this from the
recovery, and that will be one of the first things I do once I upgrade.

The question is then, would the “reconstructed you” really be you or only a

Re: system integrity protection

2015-09-18 Thread Mike Arrigo
I plan on turning it off, I don't want someone else deciding what I can
and cannot do with my computers. Of course, each user must decide if
they want to do this, but for me it will definitely be disabled.

Original message:
I would be careful before turning this off. I believe that dropbox will
still work, but just in a different integration with the finder. These
solutions are designed to make the Macintosh more secure by only
allowing applications with a specific internal flag set to have access
to the essential parts of the Operating System. Apple knows that
Dropbox / One Drive / Google Docs are essential functions of the modern
computer user and will not block them entirely. What they are doing is
preventing programs from saying for example Hey I'll replace the open
dialogs available in all applications with a new one. So, it will be
that much more difficult for applications to take read and write to
every file and peripheral on the computer without permission from the kernel.

I underestand the default folder X application that power users use to
re-route certain files to a different spot in more hampered than dropbox.

Ifyou want details on this security option, there was a very
interesting talk given at WWDC which I think is available on Youtube on
the enhanced security of 10.11, and all of my opioons expressed above
are based on this tak.

Re: Anyone know how to play all songs by an artist on an iPod or iPhone?

2015-09-18 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Alan,

Well, it took me a while, but I finally had time to test this out. You were
right. Siri is a very easy way to do this. However, it is different from
using the procedure George described. Siri just shuffles the songs, whereas if
you do it the other way, one album is played then another then another. Nice
to have both options.
Cheers,

 Hi all,

so if you have multiple albums by a given artist, how do you get your

I hear this a lot from people in regards to the autonomous car reality and
"what if the computer crashed". Well, what if the driver you just passed
crashed? It's a risk a person takes when he gets on the road, and from
observations and research, computers crash less than humans do.

There were some photos leaked a while back, who knows since they are
rumors but they basically had a pod that had 4 wheels (it’s not a 3
wheeler like some models) and it had no (0) windows. Think about that for
a minute. What it did have were screens and cameras and a ton of
 autonomous driving features.
You’d also be interested in what Google is doing. They have already had
blind folks operating their autonomous vehicles for a while now. I
believe that one of the engineers on the project is blind but I haven’t
been able to come up with a name. I saw a special on CNBC about a year
ago and can’t recall the gentleman’s name they had who was using the car
to get to and from work and to the store etc. It would drop him off in
front of the grocery store door, he’d do his thing and come out and hit a
key fob that would summon the car that had parked it self and it pulled up
 and picked him up.

Give it enough time and there will be some sort of 3-D virtual reality that
will make it feel like the wind is blowing in your face at different levels at
different speeds… Want to put it past him… I think this is an awesome thing!

Re: Apple car, anyone?

2015-09-18 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
I'd love a car which I could use myself. Probably cost a fortune. I could go
to work in my car, or go and see parents in my car or go and get shopping and
fasten my guide dog in the back. She's have a whale of a time as she'd not
have too much work to do. The only scary thing would be that supposing the
computer in the car went wrong and it crashed?

Otherwise, if I stay home, I try my best to try and catch up with important

my mind at the moment, but I can't really think of writing them, as I'm barely

Using LOGITECH Headset for Face Time

2015-09-18 Thread Bill Gallik
I’m using a LogiTech USB headset on my Mac mini; this headset has a mike boom.
When I attempt to make a Face Time phone call the person to whom I’m talking
comes through the internal speaker, how do I direct Face Time to direct
conversation exclusively through the headset - input and output alike?

Re: IOS 9 impressions?

2015-09-18 Thread Eileen Scrivani
I had this exact problem the other day after updating. It was on the screen
where you need to re-enter the passcode after updates are done. It would take
a one finger double tap to put uppercase on a single letter, but could not do
an entire string in caps.

I confess I haven’t had a reason to type and use the caps lock. I’m using an
IPhone 6.

Re: system integrity protection

2015-09-18 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Yeah, that’s perfectly reasonable. Of course I want people to benefit from a
feature if it can; like I said, I probably won’t have cause to turn it off
myself, even. And yes the process for doing so, while it could theoretically
be socially engineered, is probably safe against accidents, given that you need
to take an explicit step and are prompted for confirmation. In fact one dev
was saying that it was easier to use recovery than a command-line equivalent,
though that’s probably a bit of an exaggeration. I often wish you could do
that on iOS too; now that really is a prison without an exit, but if it only
had an “Are you sure, you’re on your own here, no warranty, don’t say you
weren’t warned” prompt, I’m sure most people would get that they were crossing
the sacred threshold, leaving room for innovators to do their thing and,
assuming no clear security holes, proceed safely if they knew what and what not
to do, much as on Mac today.

But what I worry about most—and continue to worry about, despite my love of
Apple products—is Apple’s apparent need to drive this trend. How can they not
have ulterior motives? Steve Jobs always said of the iOS restrictions that
“Our intentions are pure”. He’s convinced devs as much. And honestly, it’s
clear that mobile is the future and that there are real security concerns. But
sandboxing, alternative whitelists, granular permissions, user accounts and
even, now, virtualisation all exist as byproducts of the mobile future, and
don’t need a one true gatekeeper. It’s hard to believe Apple isn’t on this
path for the wrong reasons. The kindest thing to suggest is that they simply
don’t trust their own Mac-using userbase, and prefer a strategy of restriction
over education.

Re: Apple car, anyone?

2015-09-18 Thread Denise Barajas
This certainly would be very interesting. I haven't really heard or read very
much of anything, due to the fact that I myself find myself extremely occupied
more or less on the daily basis. When I'm not going to school, I kind of just
chill out and try to either run my own errands out of the house and usually
when I'm in the public transit system, I like to get lost in my favorite music.
Otherwise, if I stay home, I try my best to try and catch up with important
email, or I just play my mud client game. It certainly does think a few
questions though. How safe and how credible could a project like this be
especially for those of us with no vision? There are many more that can come to
my mind at the moment, but I can't really think of writing them, as I'm barely
starting my day myself. Either way though, I have posted this on various places
and if they do turn out to be well equipped and well established, I might
consider going to try one of them myself. I hope these thoughts don't sound too
general or two simple. Blessings to all of you

Re: system integrity protection

2015-09-18 Thread Scott Granados
I’m torn on this. On one hand I’m glad that companies are taking security more
seriously and are taking steps. On the other hand, you make a great point do
we need our hands held? My gut says this could get overbearing and way to
restrictive but then I see posts from people who probably don’t understand the
ramifications asking for step by step directions how to turn off a feature that
may not need disabling. No harm in asking I just get concerned if someone
doesn’t have a full understanding of the impact of what they are doing and does
it and then infects others. Maybe the way to go is the way it’s being done.
Enable the feature, have a means to disable it but make the means to disable
tricky enough that it requires some reading first where one could be informed
of the risks. I don’t know. I’m the first to say don’t tell me what to do
with my own hardware but I also see on a daily basis how much malware traffic
is out there and it’s a massive amount. As in many things, it sounds like a
balancing act.

It’s a trend. I don’t think it’s a good trend, in much the same way that I
don’t think it would be a good trend for kitchen knives to be blunted because
you can do accidental or deliberate harm with them. But eh, I get it. I can’t

Re: Apple car, anyone?

2015-09-18 Thread Scott Granados
Oh I think sited users will do just fine. There are screens where the windows
would be so they will still be able to see outside. It’s just now they will
have night vision and infrared as well as the regular optical spectrum.
Depends on how good the screens are I guess. I used to work next to Dolby labs
and got a tour once. They had a demonstration of a window that looked outside
and then a screen mounted in the wall that looked exactly the same shape / size
as the real window and the demonstration was you had to guess which one was
real and which was a screen. Most people couldn’t tell the difference. So if
they have technology like that probably sited users won’t mind if it’s a glass
screen instead of a glass window. Only difference is you can’t roll it down.
That being said though the car would be much safer because it doesn’t have all
the cutout spots for windows and viewing areas. You can use solid metal panels
and have a lot more rigidity and structural stability with out the window so
crashes should be safer.

that if this list develops the strict rule that we can only talk about the
Mac, then sorry to say, I'll be doing the same as others have and or will
do and take my talents elsewhere. I'm subscribed to three other lists that
let people talk about Mac and iPhone in one list, one list, Peel The
Apple, has an off topic weekend where people can talk about anything,
Windows, Android, even Jaws. The other two are Joseph Hudson's Blind
Apples list and John P's Mac For The Blind list. So as you can see I have
a lot of resources at my disposal. One more thing, the sad day will be
when I do unsubscribe because I share Kawal's sentiments in that I've met
a ton of awesome people and I even have some of you on Skype and social

Re: No Apple Watch update.

2015-09-18 Thread Scott Granados
Well, let’s be realistic, Code Factory is a tiny company of what 6 or 10
people? I understand tight resources there more than Apple who has hundreds of
thousands of employees, the most cash on hand of any company in history and no
excuses in my mind for cutting corners. Steve wouldn’t have let some of this
software out the door. Remember the maps snafu? What about the buggy IOS 8
that was so bad I went out and bought a Samsung phone instead of an iPhone on
opening day. Although on that note, 9 is far far better bugs wise on day 1
than 8 was. What about that software release that lasted all of 2 hours when
they bricked everyone’s phone who installed and made them not able to connect
to a network. Tim Cook needs to get a handle on QA. I think he’s making
ground but the #1 company in the world in terms of valuation aught to be able
to do better in my mind.

Re: system integrity protection

2015-09-18 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
I would be careful before turning this off. I believe that dropbox will still
work, but just in a different integration with the finder. These solutions are
designed to make the Macintosh more secure by only allowing applications with a
specific internal flag set to have access to the essential parts of the
Operating System. Apple knows that Dropbox / One Drive / Google Docs are
essential functions of the modern computer user and will not block them
entirely. What they are doing is preventing programs from saying for example
Hey I'll replace the open dialogs available in all applications with a new
one. So, it will be that much more difficult for applications to take read and
write to every file and peripheral on the computer without permission from the
kernel.

I underestand the default folder X application that power users use to re-route
certain files to a different spot in more hampered than dropbox.

Ifyou want details on this security option, there was a very interesting talk
given at WWDC which I think is available on Youtube on the enhanced security of
10.11, and all of my opioons expressed above are based on this tak.

Cannon Scanner and Mac Mini

2015-09-18 Thread 'Jim Fettgather' via MacVisionaries
Hello, I have a Macbook Air and a Mac Mini both running Yosemite.
When I connect the Cannon scanner to the Macbook Air, , and go to printers and
faxes, I can add it with no problem and it works beautifully.
However, on the Mac Mini, it just literally does not show up at all, I have
tried all available USB ports.
The scanner has no on/off button, and I made certain that it was unlocked.
It’s just not showing up at all.
Any suggestions would sure be appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: El Kapitan.

2015-09-18 Thread Scott Granados
Kawal, the recent naming convention is places in California. El Capitan is the
tallest peek in Yosemite national park which is an amazing outdoor space in
California that has been reserved as a national park. Mavericks is a place off
the Northern California coast not far from Santa Cruz or San Francisco where
one of the worlds most difficult and dangerous surfing competitions takes
place. It’s set up where surfers around the world get 24 hours notice to
travel to mavericks and then compete. Wave heights can be over 60 feet and
have broken 80 or more. More than not there’s at least one death during the
competition because the conditions are so extreme. Even spectators have been
washed out to sea which caused the observation area to be moved way back but
you used to be able to get right there on the water’s edge.
Yosemite as you know is the park I mentioned. So you can see these
names are California based. Still, I think El Capitan is the worst name for an
operating system ever.:)

I haven't--I never realized it was there. Do you know if there's a way to use

10.11 is still under NDA, but the option you described has been available since
at least 10.9. When you use it, you can also use VoiceOver to sort the columns

Re: Apple car, anyone?

2015-09-18 Thread Scott Granados
Dona, has anyone described to you what this prototype car looks like? There
were some photos leaked a while back, who knows since they are rumors but they
basically had a pod that had 4 wheels (it’s not a 3 wheeler like some models)
and it had no (0) windows. Think about that for a minute. What it did have
were screens and cameras and a ton of autonomous driving features.
You’d also be interested in what Google is doing. They have already
had blind folks operating their autonomous vehicles for a while now. I believe
that one of the engineers on the project is blind but I haven’t been able to
come up with a name. I saw a special on CNBC about a year ago and can’t recall
the gentleman’s name they had who was using the car to get to and from work and
to the store etc. It would drop him off in front of the grocery store door,
he’d do his thing and come out and hit a key fob that would summon the car that
had parked it self and it pulled up and picked him up.

Never thought I’d see it in my lifetime, shocks me how far along they actually
are. Google has made massive steps forward in machine vision.

I don’t have anything for your damsel in distress, but I can only concur with

works excellently. Neither are VoiceOver, of course.

Re: system integrity protection

2015-09-18 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
System Integrity Protection will in theory not be a problem for you, if you
don’t happen to need to step on its toes. The biggest issue I see is that the
bless command-line tool will no longer function, which is a real meh, since
System Preferences often doesn’t show the Windows partition. Other than that,
OS file immutability is actually a nice harness for the avoidance of crappy
software. Still a worrying and unhealthy trend, though. Very worrying …

SIP has nothing whatsoever to do with sandboxing. It only protects system
files and prevents you from doing various code injection tricks. Dropbox can
use the new APIs provided to show file status indicators instead of injecting
into the Finder. (Apparently the irony is lost on Apple that Dropbox, and
hence iCloud Drive and the entire API, would not exist if not for the lack of
such protections …)

system integrity protection. In a nutshell, what this does is
prevent any program from accessing or binding to running processes
such as the finder or dock. One program that apparently is affected
by this is dropbox, the finder integration will no longer work.
Basically, it requires all applications to be sandboxed, even those
that are installed from outside the app store. Even if a program
requests elevated permissions where you have to type in your
password, that will no longer matter, the program will no longer
have this access. Fortunately, there will be a way to disable this
from the recovery, and that will be one of the first things I do
once I upgrade.
