RE: Using Google docs, etc., on mac with voiceover

2016-12-28 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Mary,

Our sales people for these things no less than I do which is why I have fun
with their computers,

On the funny side I set one of their mac book pro machines to a greak
keyboard and Spanish display languages it appears they reset it back to
factory defaults.

Anyway

What is the Samsung tv model you have with the accessibility features?

I asked the sale guy about accessibility in the samsungs but he couldn’t find
anything in the models they had in store,

I’m not really a sony fan so if I could stay with Smsung then I’d prefer to.

The fact the android OS was fully accessible was the reason I was starting to
look at that more than anything else.

Hi Simon, all I can say is I hope you check out Samsung TVs before you decide
to buy a Sony. I say that because in my experience, the Samsung I just
purchased was a lot cheaper than a Sony I have recently Seen discussed on an
android list. They both have excess ability. I paid $219 US for a Samsung TV 32
inches with excess ability. There is an android Sony TV probably the one you
have been talking about, which is twice that if not more. But I don't see any
point. Sure, you may have to get a little bit of cited help start out with the
Samsung TV. But I am just not convinced that the android thing is worth it on
the TV. I could take the money I saved I'm not buying that Sony and spend it on
a really awesome pair of headphones, which I did. And I think I'll be ahead.
But to each their own.

I use and recommend ChromeVox on mac:

It provides a lot better experience with G Suite.

skype and ios weirdness

2016-12-28 Thread jean parker
Hello All:

I have several skype accounts and today when I signed out of one and attempted
to sign into another of my accounts the app wouldn't let me sign in. I enter
the password and hit the sign in button but instead of opening the account it
goes to a page where it is asking for date of birth, location etc, as if it
thinks I want to open a new account. I have tried to sign in on two different
accounts and get the same behavior each time. So I tried reinstalling skype to
see if that helped but there was no change. The accounts are intact as I can
sign in and out of them with no trouble on my computer.

Has anyone else had this happen and if so, how did you fix it?

As always, thank you in advance for any ideas or suggestions,

Re: Using Google docs, etc., on mac with voiceover

2016-12-28 Thread Donna Goodin
I agree with Mary completely, here. Google seems to think it's fine to ignore
standard conventions, and make blind users learn their system. I don't
consider that acceptable. While it's true that different OSes have different
key commands, Google refuses to utilize the existing structure of the OS,
making users learn a whole new set of commands to accommodate them. For as
long as I have the choice to do so, I will refuse to use Google for that reason
alone. I realize that they don't care about my small protest, but I will do it
anyway, and will continue to mark them down for accessibility.
Cheers,
Donna

I use and recommend ChromeVox on mac:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chromevox/kgejglhpjiefppelpmljglcjbhoiplfn
It provides a lot better experience with G Suite.

2016-12-28 Thread Mary Otten
There is no cost. And I can't talk about how good it is or isn't. Frankly, I
resented chrome box from the beginning. Because I thought the Google should
play along with the screen readers and not expect people to learn a specific
Screenwitter just so they can access their stuff. I mean after all, we have
lots of standards. Why did google have to do something weird and different?
HTML is HTML. But not if your Google. So I have a bias against chrome box. But
I can't speak to how good it is or is not. I think Google should've played with
the standards that existed already in HTML and not expected blind people to
learn a whole different system just because they can..

RE: bluetooth headphone strangeness

2016-12-28 Thread Simon Fogarty
And on this,

I got myself the Plantronics voyager 5200 today, that’s the 5220 but without
the car charger, as soon as I paired it with my iPhone 7+ the Plantronics hub
popped up and let me know there was a firmware update,

It also let me install it with the headset running and connected to the phone,

My edge doesn’t let me do this or at least hasn’t given that option.

The Jawbone Plantronics and blue ant devices also have a software package for
each that allow you to update firmware from your computer.

Hi Scott,

Do you know how I can update firmware on LG HBS-1100?

I tried Googling, but cannot find a utility, release notes, or if this is even
possible.

Hoping you're able to help :)

HI Ray, so most modern headsets have a firmware component and a settings

headset updater, the jawbone uses the jawbone update tool and so forth. It’s
very likely your manufacturer has a set of tools or both updating your headset
and configuring it. Firmware updates are important, just like operating system
updates you get bug fixes and added features. You will want to google your
headset name and model and something like firmware or settings. That should
help you activate and disable the features you want. Let me know if you have
any further questions.

Thanks

Hey Ray, about the call quality issue, I have some ideas that may help you.

I’m not sure the carrier you use, if you use T-Mobile you’re set for this out
of the box, if you use Verizon you need to activate advanced calling features
on your phone, you can do that through the web portal or by calling customer
service. It’s a free feature. If you use AT same deal, Sprint is hit or
miss.
On your iPhone select settings, cellular, insure cellular data is enabled and
under the cellular options make sure that both voice and data are enabled for
LTE. If all these things are set you should get a call that sounds much more
like FaceTime or Skype if you call someone who supports the high bandwidth
calling. Also, if you have a configuration too for your new headset insure
that wide band calling is enabled. Even with out wide band calling enabling
this tends to make the audio a little less crunchy.

Good luck

RE: command for turning on VO on the new Macs?

2016-12-28 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Donna,

But does that depend on what state the touch bar is in at the time you try to
turn on voiceover?

I mean the touch bar can be used with different apps and have different roles
so is it changing the state of the F5 key if you have say Safari open and
active at the time you try to enabled / disable voiceover?

Just to add to this, one thing I figured out is that if you orient by the
number keys, it is possible to find a certain function key on the touch bar.
For example, F5 is just above the number five key.

RE: command for turning on VO on the new Macs?

2016-12-28 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi David and List,

I just had a play with the 15inchMBP in a store here and managed to some how
put my finger on the siri button on the right hand end of the touch bar, or
possibly it was the power button but anyway tapping this 3 times and saying
"Turn Voiceover On" started voiceover up.

Then sliding my finger across the touch bar slowly spoke out all the buttons
on the bar, crazy enough it didn't tell me volume up / down but did give
Mute as the option directly to the left of siri.

I still think this needs work myself but it's very doable with multiple options
 to start voiceover up.

This will sound strange, but I got it to work. If one knows where the f5 key is
on the touch bar, pressing fn (the key in the lower left corner) command, f5
will start and stop voiceover on the new macbook with touch bar.

Re: bluetooth headphone strangeness

Hi Scott,

Do you know how I can update firmware on LG HBS-1100?

I tried Googling, but cannot find a utility, release notes, or if this is
even possible.

Hoping you're able to help :)

Problems using AVCLabs Audiobook Convertor

2016-12-28 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

I wonder if anybody on the list uses AVCLabs Audiobook Convertor to convert
audiobooks purchased via itunes or from Audible into mp3 format which one can
play on any player. I've used this app successfully for a number of years and
never had problems. All of a sudden, as soon as I launch it - which also
launches itunes in the background - Voiceover begins to stutter and after a few
minutes it crashes. Any similar experiences everyone?

Also, if I can't make this app work again, what do you use to convert
audiobooks bought via itunes or Audible to strip the protection and convert to
mp3 format?

Many thanks for any comments

Andrew

Re: command for turning on VO on the new Macs?

2016-12-28 Thread Donna Goodin
Just to add to this, one thing I figured out is that if you orient by the
number keys, it is possible to find a certain function key on the touch bar.
For example, F5 is just above the number five key.
