Hi,
can I do this copy and paste deal with the destination as well?

I did try your other trick with the root account, but I got a bunch of stuff
you didn’t mention, so got a little bogged down in all of it For example, I
couldn’t find where to edit things after I clicked on file analysis or whatever
that is after you click join..

sorry, need more coffee..

Thanks!

Good point. Yes, they do sync, I believe. I almost never use saved searches so
can't talk about this in much detail, but I do recall seeing a table of saved
searches alongside the search field when I hit cmd-shift-f to do a global find.

2017-10-14 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

In addition to Alex's comments, you will encounter the same issues you had in
the GUI since the level of authority of the user performing the move action is
still you. You may wish to use the "sudo" command in front of the "mv"
command. Also, a trick you can use to ensure you have the correct path in
Terminal, is to locate the file in the Finder, then use cmd-c to Copy it. When
you paste it into Terminal, it will actually paste the path, not the contents.
So, it might say something lie

sudo mv /volumes/HD-2/Library/My\ Books target_location

You probably want /Volumes (slash before Volumes) instead.

For users of Twitterrific for iOS, this launch means there’s finally a
modern version of their favorite Twitter client for the desktop again. But
even if you’re not yet a Twitterrific user, the interest in the new app

Twitterrific lets you choose between two themes (light and dark), a
handful of fonts including Menlo (shown below), nine text sizes ranging
from Tiny to CHOCK, and three media thumbnail options.

Changing between light and dark theme also changes the window color for
menus even if you’re not using the basic ‘Use dark menu bar and Dock’

For users of Twitterrific for iOS, this launch means there’s finally a
modern version of their favorite Twitter client for the desktop again. But
even if you’re not yet a Twitterrific user, the interest in the new app
existing is both good news for the Mac as a platform as well as the Mac
Twitter client competition (which Twitter tries to prevent without
 maintaining its own app well).

Twitterrific lets you choose between two themes (light and dark), a
handful of fonts including Menlo (shown below), nine text sizes ranging
from Tiny to CHOCK, and three media thumbnail options.

Changing between light and dark theme also changes the window color for
menus even if you’re not using the basic ‘Use dark menu bar and Dock’
preference which is a nice touch, and media opens in a whimsical and fluid
popover with share options and even playback controls for video included.

Twiterrific also includes VoiceOver support for navigating the timeline,
composing tweets, and the option to add a text description to images as a
 fantastic accessibility feature.

Tha's a great idea, thanks! I've set it up, but don't feel like fighting with
File Vault to test it. Still, I'll see if it worked next time I restart. You're
right, though, I see no reason it shouldn't I always forget about this option
to start things on boot, since I have my Mac set to re-open everything I was
doing when I shut it down.

Re: terminal work

2017-10-14 Thread Alex Hall
First, I think you need quotes if you're going to use paths with spaces. Put
each path--origin and destination--in quotes and see if that helps.

Second, if you want to move all the files and folders in origin, use the -R
flag (note that the R is capitalized).

Third, you start with Volumes. Unless you've already changed your directory to
slash, this will look for a folder called Volumes in the location you're in.
You probably want /Volumes (slash before Volumes) instead.

Re: Twitterrific returns to the Mac as a modern Twitter client w/ themes, muffle syncing, more

2017-10-14 Thread Alex Hall
Having happily backed this project, and having used the betas since backers got
them months ago, here are the differences I see.

* If you use Twitterrific for iOS, position syncing via iCloud works nearly
perfectly. Tweet Marker has never worked once for me.

* Night Owl shows only short links in tweets, but Twitterrific shows real URLs,
so you know what you're clicking.

* Press enter on a tweet with an image or video attached to open the media.
Videos play, while, with 10.13, you can use vo-shift-l to get a description of
the image. The app also recognizes image captions the tweet author adds.

* DMs are threaded, meaning no more scanning through tons of messages with one
person to find a message from someone else.

* The company has shown dedication to accessibility through Twitterrific on
iOS, and through making this new app accessible from the start. VO support was
even a stated goal on their initial list when the project was released on
Kickstarter.

* Quoted tweets are supported. You can read them, as well as write them.

* The company is active on Twitter and through email, taking questions and
suggestions.

* Muffle syncing means anything you mute on iOS or macOS syncs to the other
platform automatically.

* The auto-complete feature for usernames actually works, whereas on Night Owl
it either doesn't work or freezes everything.

* More I'm forgetting.

The things Night Owl has over Twitterrific that I can think of:

* Built-in support for read later services. On Twitterrific, you have to open a
link and use your browser to save the page, rather than just a keystroke like
in Night Owl.

* You can't create saved searches in Twitterrific, though the company says that
feature is coming soon.

* Again, I'm probably forgetting some.

Hi,
so I’ve been trying to move files from one place to another with the terminal.
I am screwing this up royally, so any help would be great. Here’s what I’ve
been typing:

mv Volumes/Library Disk /Volumes/My Book/books

What am I doing wrong, please? This is trying to move files from one external

Thanks!

Why you need to upgrade from this older version of Windows 10 - CNET

Why you need to upgrade from this older version of Windows 10 - CNET
If you have refused Microsoft's Windows 10 updates for the past couple of
years, it's now time to upgrade. Microsoft announced that it is no longer
rolling out security and quality updates to Windows 10 version 1511, which
was released nearly two years ago in November 2015.
What's a quality update?
There are two types of Microsoft updates: feature updates and quality
updates. Feature updates add new features and functionality and are
generally released twice a year. Quality updates provide security and
reliability fixes and are released monthly -- typically on what is known as
Patch Tuesday, the second Tuesday of every month. When Microsoft says that
Windows 10 version 1511 will no longer receive security and quality updates,
it's just being redundant; security fixes come by way of quality updates.
Does it matter if I'm running Windows 10 Home or Pro?
It does not. The end of service for Windows 10 version 1511 affects not only
both Windows 10 Home and Pro editions but also Windows 10 Education and
Enterprise editions.
How do I check which version of Window 10 I have?
In the search box on the taskbar, type winver and hit Enter. This opens the
About Windows window that tells you which version of Windows 10 you are
running. If it listed as Version 1511 (or, gasp!, earlier), then it's time
to update.
How do I update?
Open the Settings app and choose Update & security. Next, choose Windows
Update from the left column and then click the Check for updates button. Or,
if an update is sitting there waiting for you, click the Restart now button
to restart your PC and install the update. Alternatively, you could wait
until next week and install Windows 10 Fall Creators Update when it's
released on October 17.

Now Playing: Watch this: 10 quick ways to speed up Windows 10
3:27
And if I refuse?
Well, your computer will continue to work but you will no longer receive
updates to patch up any holes that might leave you open to future security
vulnerabilities. You will be operating, as they say, without a net.

RE: Off-list inquiry about a perhaps questionable topic

2017-10-14 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I am posting this to let you all know that I replied to Mike’s very kind and
gracious email, off-list.

In my private response, I informed him that requests for app/application
recommendations do not violate any list policies.

As a side note, I truly do appreciate the extremely kind replies you all
contributed to this thread.

Sincerely,

Well Mike, I enjoyed learning about you and your life.

There is a program called codex that will do what you want. I use it for my
Kindle books because I want to read them in Voice Dream. I convert them to
EPub, but there are choices. I don't have a link to it, but I'm sure if you
google it, it will come up. It is free, though you can contribute. There
is a version for windows and one for Mac.

Good luck with it, and be sure to read the instructions before using.

Take care,
Lois

Thanks for answering my question, Sandy. This is very embarrassing because
I thought I was posting a private message to the list owner. I don’t even
know if it is permissible to discuss this topic on the list.

However, thanks for your input, and all the best. By the way, I don’t want
to go the scanner route, because I have already purchased Kindle editions,
and I don’t want to have to pay a second time for a book when I may only use
one or two sentences for quotation purposes out of it.

Your thought about copying is one that I have had as well, Tim, and it
sometimes works okay.

I called my original posting an off-list inquiry because at the bottom of every
message on this list, we are told how to reach the list owners. I did not know
that when I used that e-mail address, it would go out to the entire list.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback, and have a great weekend,

Content Caching

2017-10-14 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Content caching is now a part of High Sierra. Content Caching used to be
available only through MacOS X Server but has now been integrated into the
regular MacOS experience. What does this do, you ask? Basically, it can
considerably speed up downloads of certain updates and content from Apple, as
well as reduce data usage. What happens is that if Content Caching is enabled
on your Mac, when it or another device requests an update or related content
from Apple, that content is downloaded to the Content Caching computer and
distributed to the devices that request it. Therefore, the first time the
content is requested, the speed is no different than any normal update or
content access request, but any future requests for that same item no longer
need to be downloaded from an Apple server as they are stored locally on a Mac
in your home. This means that if you have a slower internet connection, or
data limits from your ISP, the data is actually only downloaded once then
redistributed locally from then on. If you have a fast, robust internal
network, then the speed for updates and accessing other iCloud kinds of content
is greatly increased.

The service is found in System Preferences, Sharing under Content Caching.
There are some settings and other factors to be aware of. If the Mac that you
enable Content Caching on is not on when the request is made, then the download
will still need to come from Apple or some other Content Caching computer that
is on your network. Also, these updates and other content are stored locally
on the Mac, so if your Mac does not have a lot of space, this option may not be
desirable. There are also settings that allow content to be cached across
multiple subnets with the same public IP and the ability to share the load
between multiple caching computers.

In my case, I have a MacPro that is always left on in my house that is also
connected via ethernet, so, all these updates are passed through it. I also
use this service at work where I have multiple subnets and hundreds to
thousands of devices wanting updates. It does an excellent job at reducing the
bottleneck at the portal to the outside world.

Check it out if you wish.

Re: apple tv 4K

2017-10-14 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Simon,

I'm certainly not a lawyer but believe that this sort of thing is not totally
the fault of Apple or any other provider. Different regulations within each
country, different levels of tax levels and such cause things to be priced much
different in each area. We, in Canada, also pay more than our southern
neighbours for things, and I know for sure that we often don't get full
availability of features the same as the States either. For example, somewhere
between our government and the big Telecom providers, we are not able to have
access to the yearly upgrade program that Apple offers to iPhone users in the
US. Things like iTunes Match and Apple Music tend to come to us behind its
release in the US. Netflix costs more and we don't get the same amount of
content either. So, I guess that my point is that we can't totally blame Apple
or the other tech providers for these inflated costs, there's usually a bunch
of other things that contribute to this inflation of costs.

Re: Off-list inquiry about a perhaps questionable topic

2017-10-14 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I'm wondering if the "Copy Last Phrase to the Clipboard" would work for small
passages in this situation. Let's say that VO read a paragraph, then you
stopped it, then press VO-shift-c to copy the last phrase uttered by VO, then
pasted that phrase in into a TexEdit document, if that would do the trick for
you. I'm not sure if copy protection algorithms would stop this, but I doubt
it. The other limitation is the amount of stuff that VO copies at a time. I
guess that this could depend on how long of passage you need.

Just a thought.

Not always possible, and memorizing several sentences and then writing them
precisely, including punctuation, isn’t always easy. That is why copy and
paste functions exist.

Re: problems copying files

2017-10-14 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

There's likely either a permission error or some other error with specific
files within the folder that is causing them to appear "in use" to the system.
Yes, you could go one by one, or two by two in attempts to finish things and
determine the culprit or culprits, but that would indeed be tedious at best.
Usually, the root user can bypass these sorts of issues. There is also ways in
the Terminal whereby we could copy things over, but lets go with the root user
method since it uses the GUI. We will enable the root user, then disable it
after you're done so that your computer doesn't have a vulnerability with root
enabled.

1. Go to System Prefs to the Users & Groups pane.
2. Click the padlock to unlock it. You'll need to enter your Admin password.
3. In the table of users, go to the bottom to the Login Options item.
4. Find the Join button and press it.
5. In the new dialog, press the Open Directory Utility button.
6. Click the padlock to unlock again.
7. Up to the Edit menu and down to Enable Root User.
8. You'll need to enter and confirm a password for the root user. Don't make
it the same as your Admin though.

You can quit everything now and logout of your current user. In the Login
window, VO-space on the Other user then enter "root" in the username field and
your password in the password field. It will probably go through some setup
steps, don't set up any iCloud stuff or Siri stuff here, just tell it to "Don't
Sign in" and/or Skip depending on the dialog. You'll also need to turn VO on
in this user as it won't do it automatically.

Now, you should be able to do the copying without problems. Once finished, log
out of the root user, log back in as yourself and go through the steps listed
above to get into Directory Utility. In Directory Utility, choose Disable Root
user and quit things.

You should be good to go now.

Later...

I have the seven, and I performed the update this morning. Seeing some
improvement in Maps. It’s better, but still not as good as it was under iOS 10.
However on our last outing, it did get us where we needed to go, which is
definitely an improvement.

Re: Auto-mount DMG on boot?

2017-10-14 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I don't see why this wouldn't work. Go into System Prefs, Users & Groups.
Make sure that you've unlocked the padlock and that your user is selected in
the Users, Groups & Login Options table. Select the Login Items tab, then
press the Add button. In the Open dialog, press cmd-shift-i to access your
iCloud Drive and navigate to the dmg file and add it. Make sure that the dmg
file is not mounted and this process should mount it. This won't automatically
activate the VO Prefs, but should at least auto mount the dmg for you.

Hi all,
For quite a while now, I've kept my VO preferences on a DMG stored in my iCloud
Drive. This makes it very easy to use my prefs on beta drives or if I switch
Macs. The only problem is that I lose my prefs on boot until I mount the DMG.

It's only a few steps (Finder, cmd-shift-i, type v o I to get to my disk,
cmd-o). Still, I'd like to automate this if I can, so the Mac mounts the disk
image on its own when it boots. I've had a look online, but the only thing I
found was about network drives or SMB shares, which I don't want. This is just
a locally stored DMG that I want to force to mount on boot. Any thoughts or
suggestions? Thanks.

Re: Hello all:

Hi,

To add to Simon's comments, if you don't hear VO when in the Recovery
partition, you can use VO-cmd-left or three times, then VO-cmd-up to raise the
volume. Don't know for sure if this rotor command has changed in the High
Sierra version of the Recovery partition. If so, then you'll need to add the
shift key to the combination.

As for how this works on the new machines, I can't say as haven't got one to

Not always possible, and memorizing several sentences and then writing them
precisely, including punctuation, isn’t always easy. That is why copy and

Thanks for answering my question, Sandy. This is very embarrassing because I
thought I was posting a private message to the list owner. I don’t even know
if it is permissible to discuss this topic on the list.

However, thanks for your input, and all the best. By the way, I don’t want to
go the scanner route, because I have already purchased Kindle editions, and I
don’t want to have to pay a second time for a book when I may only use one or
two sentences for quotation purposes out of it.

Hi, lets start with your question, obviously if your friend can remove DRM from
a book you should be able to do it , too.
Find out how he do it , and we can take it from there.
I too am educated a RN, registered nurse, so me and all sorts of aids in that
regard is really close.
I live in Europe Denmark, Jutland, when I’m not working i use an insanely
amount of time on music.
Too be more specific I’m a Clasiccal Keytar player.
Another thing that might work for you, it takes more time, is to get a paper
book, scan the relevant part in, and use that, i have had to scan whole medical
books in, me being 5.5 and 100 pound that was a bit of a task.
But what dont we do to reach our goals?

If you have

Off-list inquiry about a perhaps questionable topic

2017-10-14 Thread Michael Busboom
Hello Mark,

I hope that wherever you live, and wherever you are, you are having a nice
weekend.

Before asking my question, please let me once again tell you how much I enjoy
many of your postings on the list. I believe that they perform a real service
to all of us.

So here’s my question: You may have seen my recent posting on the list about
the Kindle app and how one might copy text from a Kindle book into a document
that I am creating. Since I am team-teaching a course, I sometimes need to
site short passages from a book that we are discussing.

Thus far, I haven’t received any feedback, and that is okay. However, the
matter is somewhat urgent for me. If you are familiar with Voice Dream Reader,
you will know that performing such an operation is reasonably readily
accomplished. In the past, after I have purchased books from the Amazon store,
I have asked a friend to remove the DRM so that I could import the books into
Voice Dream Reader. While my friend doesn’t at all mind helping me, he isn’t
always available when I need material. I have no desire to pirate material,
nor do I wish to act irresponsibly. I have only had the DRM removed from books
which I myself have purchased, and I do not share these books with other people.

All of this having been said, I am wondering about the appropriateness of
asking list members if they know of an accessible program that removes DRM from
eBooks, not Audible or other audio books. Perhaps there is a Unix utility or
something like that.

I would appreciate your thoughts, and understandably, I will abide with
whatever you decide is appropriate. The last thing I want to do is ask a
question and get preached at by someone on the list who sees him or herself as
a pillar of moral rectitude, if you get my drift.

On a totally different subject, I am wondering where you live and what you do
for a living. As for me, I grew up on a farm near Chicago, was mainstreamed
into the local school system, got a degree in German at the University of
Illinois, came to Austria, where I have lived since 1976. For better or worse,
I’m starting to become an old, yet very lively, geezer. Professionally, I have
worked with several companies and organizations in the blindness field, and I
have also been a freelance translator and interpreter.

I have three daughters, all of whom are in their 20s, and I am married to
Regina, who is a registered nurse at a private hospital here in Vienna. Our
three children and one grandchild are all bilingual. Regina and I always speak
German with one another, but we each speak our mother tongue with the kids.

Well, Mark, that’s probably more information than you might have wanted, but
since we occasionally interact through the list, I wanted you to know just a
little bit more about me.

My very best to you with thanks in advance,

Mike

Auto-mount DMG on boot?

2017-10-14 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
For quite a while now, I've kept my VO preferences on a DMG stored in my iCloud

Thanks.

Hi Sandie,

I’m glad to hear that you have never seen such behavior in maps, it gives me
hope that my problem might be solvable someday. :-)

That was what really weirded me out. Having it on turn by turn didn’t help. I’m
about to install the update to 1103, so hopefully that will fix the problem. If
not I’ll try what Mark suggested.
Cheers,

Clean Install

2017-10-14 Thread Lee Jones
Dear List I want to do a clean install of High Sierra. I have never done one
before, which is embarrassing as I have been using a mac for years. Can you do
a clean install direct from the recovery partition without an external drive.
On apple support it gives instructions for how to wipe your mac prior to sale,
boot into the recovery partition, erase Macintosh HD, and then use the
reinstall utility etc. Is this a clean install. I would be grateful for any
advice you can give me.

Kind Regards, Lee

problems copying files

2017-10-14 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi,
So, after going through my computer coughing and spluttering, I now have it
back and it’s working great!

I am having problems copying a folder of files from one external to another,
though. when I try and copy the entire folder, I get an error that says the
operation can’t be completed because one or more files are in use. they are
not in use. If I copy smaller chunks, I can, but I still am often getting the
same message as above, about the files being in use.

I really really want all my books in one place, and am trying to free a drive
for time machine back ups.

I have done a disk utility on the disk where the books folder resieds, and
supposedly everything is fine and dandy..

Any help? I can copy things one by one, two by two, but that’s gonna take ages!

Thanks
Cait

RE: Hello all:

2017-10-14 Thread Simon Fogarty
Yes using command R at start up to get into the recovery console / utilities
you can use vo

Note though that you have to make sure you have the alert volume up
So that means if someone has muted the start up tone on your machine then you
wont hear the tones, you also wont hear the vo speech at the recovery utilities.

As for how this works on the new machines, I can't say as haven't got one to
try, but I know on older machines it works fine as I do this for work all the
time.

iPod touch fifth gen

2017-10-14 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi List,

I thought I'd ask this here as there are some that might have tried what I'm
thinking.

I have a 5th gen iPod touch that the battery is starting to die on,

I wondered if anyone has taken one apart to replace the battery themselves?

And I thought while I'm taking the battery out to change,
Is it possible to remove / replace the flash storage in the device?

I thought if it used an M.2 Flash SSD device for storage I could put a larger
size in and increase the storage space!

130 US dollars from ali express is a cheap 500 gig iPod touch.

Re: Maps is positively useless under iOS 11.

2017-10-14 Thread sandi sørensen
Donna, maybe this is a really stupid question, but, if , for example you are in
a car, your husband is driving , why, not just have it on turn by turn? I
realize this does not solve your problem, but might it work for the time you
are traveling?
I have absolutely never ever heard about such behavior in maps, and i use it ,
lots...
