Mark on Echo

2018-02-19 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Well, today I went over to Best Buy and purchased an Amazon Echo Plus. Of
course, I got the black-on-black-on-black, model. (smile).

I must say that this device is a blast.

The iOS Alexa app was a breeze to configure and I was up and running in a
matter of minutes.

Thanks to all of you who replied to my free music iOS app question.

>From the App Store, I downloaded and created both a free Pandora and iHeart
Radio account. From within the iOS Alexa app, I linked these two accounts
to my Echo and wow! They work marvelously well. I have exactly what I want
with amazing voice control over both. Alexa is truly incredible. I love
the fact that I can create custom radio stations with my voice, only, via my
Echo as the iOS app is not needed.

As I stated in my previous post, I have decided to use HomePod for personal
contacts, tasks, reminders, etc. but, at this time, I'll be using Alexa for
fun and random music playback, while using HomePod to play my own personal
music collection.

Would you believe it? After demonstrating my new Echo Plus to some friends
who had never seen Alexa in action, we went to Best Buy and each of them
purchased an Echo Dot. I setup three Dots, today. So that's 4 Echoes I
worked with in one day. (big Smile). I'm definitely on my way to becoming
an Echo guru!!! (Big Smile).

How wonderful it is that we have such a marvelously accessible platform
such as iOS from which to explore so many new and wonderful devices. Long
live Apple Inc and its incredible developers. Also, kudos to the Amazon
Alexa development team, as well.

Mark

No, what the OP wanted was to stop or resume VO speaking, which is
not the same as muting it. So the 2 finger tap is correct.

Re: How do you edit markup? e.g. html?

2018-02-19 Thread Jonathan Cohn
If my memory is correct Transmit and Coda are both written by Panic. My quick
look at Coda seemed to indicate that it could access remote repositories and
for editing.

So, to hear you indicate that Transmit has an editor, it sounds like there is a
bit of overlap between the two products. Can you describe the differences
between these two pieces of software?

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

iPhones and VMNO providers

2018-02-19 Thread Sarai Bucciarelli
  Hi all:

Went to get an iPhone today, and it was a bust from AT&T. *sigh* I'm
thinking about doing one of the MVNO providers that runs off the AT&T
network.

Anyone tried them? Rumors are they can throdle the network speeds and not
all iphone features work.

Re: How do you edit markup? e.g. html?

2018-02-19 Thread Alex Hall
Sorry in advance for this answer, but you never specified a platform. For
serious coding, I honestly prefer NVDA on Windows with the Notepad Plus Plus
text editor. Here's why.

* NVDA can indicate indentation with tones, making it easy and not disruptive
or chatty to know where I am in terms of levels.
* NVDA lets me customize punctuation level, so I can hear the symbols I need
to. In the latest macOS, the "most" punctuation level is missing, which was the
only good one for dealing with code.
* Notepad Plus Plus will auto-indent, has advanced find/replace options, and
has other features I find useful. I haven't found anything comparable on the
Mac, and even if I did, my previous points would make its use less than ideal.

Sorry again for the heresy, but that's what I've come to be comfortable with
and what I find works best. For Markdown specifically, an app called Multi
Markdown Composer works well on the Mac. It's free to try, but to open multiple
documents you'll have to pay to unlock it. I like it because I can vo-j between
my text and a live updating HTML view of what my Markdown will look like as
HTML.

Re: UEB and other commands using the Focus new Gen on the I phone.

2018-02-19 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I find this surprising, generally I find interpretation of these patterns are
related to the Screen Reader and not the braille display. Though I suppose
that it is possible that VO is not recognizing the Focus but in that case I
would expect more extreme issues.

Did you verify everything is configured right in the Braille section of the VO
Utility?

Re: How do you edit markup? e.g. html?

2018-02-19 Thread Brandon A. Olivares
I usually use Textedit, though I'll also sometimes use the editor in Transmit,
just because it's simple and I like it. Coda is also great.

Re: How do you edit markup? e.g. html?

2018-02-19 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I usually just use TextEdit in text mode, which probably doesn't help you much.
Most of the text apps weren't particularly accessible in the past, so I just
got used to making due. I'm not in the HTML coding environment enough lately
to need anything else, but that's just my use-case environment.

Re: How do you edit markup? e.g. html?

2018-02-19 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I have been using textedit on the Macintosh which provides very little support.

I started looking at Panic's coda editor because it appears to have been
installed on my work computer. I was able to review Markup code but I didn't
really get a chance to experiment.

I have also heard somebody recommend Visual Studio Code from Microsoft, which
is supposed to run on Mac, Linux and Windows. I have no idea how large VSCode
is but they certainly have documentation on how to access functionality with
the keyboard.

I also once talked with the developers of Ulysses for Mac
they indicated the application appeared to work fine with VoiceOver. I believe
it uses subscription based pricing after the first two weeks of use.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

It has been my experience that a two finger touch performs exactly like the tab
of a control key for both IOS and Macintosh Trackpad commander.

Re: using Vo-space inside Safari

2018-02-19 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,

Control-tab should switch between tabs. I am not sure exactly what you are
describing for the safari links, but certainly when bringing up the contextual
menu and selecting open in new tab or window, I find that I need to stop
interacting to review the rest of the page again. Or are you asking how to
click back within a web page?

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

You can get it from the app store but be prepaired to pay quite a bit for it.
About $139.95 I think.

How do you edit markup? e.g. html?

2018-02-19 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi All:

Just wondering how people manage editing markup files, html, xml, even
markdown.

What tools and approaches have you found most useful as a screen reader
user?

My personal approach is less than optimal, which is how this question
came forward at this time. I'm personally a died in the wool vim user,
but it can be difficult to understand and properly edit content in the
midst of markup tags, even in a markdown environment. Perhaps there are
vim tricks I could be better at? I'm aware that emacspeak actually
offers some advantages here--but is that the current best practice?

Thanks in advance for sharing your approach.

Janina

Re: VoiceOver friendly application for editing a QuickTime movie?

2018-02-19 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Sorry Chuck, I'm not aware of any tutorials. That doesn't necessarily mean
that there aren't any around, just that I'm not in the know yet. Most of the
editing functions are under the Edit menu, and if there's a keyboard shortcut,
it's indicated beside the menu item. I believe that cmd-y is used to split the
clip and cmd-t to trim.

Re: Smart lights & apple home

2018-02-19 Thread Nickus de Vos
Hi there
As for smart lighting in general, I did some research on this the past few
weeks and it seams Philips Hue is definately the way to go even though it’s not
the cheapest out there.

As for accessibility of the Hue app on iOS, I was actually about to ask the
same question on the list today. I downloaded the app but can’t really test it
without having a Hue device.

However if the app is not accessible, with Voiceover, after initial setup
everything can be controlled by voice if you add a HomePod or Amazon Echo in to
your system, so usability shouldn’t really be a issue even if not accessible.

I think if having a couple of people in the house a smart speaker to be able to
control it by voice will anyway be the way to go.

RE: What you need to know about unlocked phones vs. locked phones - CNET

2018-02-19 Thread Karen Lewellen

Interesting read.
In Canada, the cRTC who regulates wireless services among other things
made it mandatory that mobile providers unlock phones when requested free
of charge as of December. further all new models must be sold unlocked.
goal here is for consumers are not stuck waiting to change, or lose out
on a smartphone investment they wish to keep just because they move
elsewhere.

Unlocked phones vs. locked phones: Why you should care In this edition of Ask
Maggie, CNET's Marguerite Reardon breaks down what you need to know about the
carrier practice of locking phones.

FAQ

Should you get an unlocked phone?
The US wireless market is more competitive than ever, which is great news for
consumers who have lots of choices when it comes choosing a service provider.
But one barrier still exists when trying to switch carriers: the locked
smartphone.

The end of wireless contracts marked a watershed trend for consumers because it
finally opened the door for them to more easily shop around for alternative
wireless carriers. But the software locks that carriers put on phones
restricting its use on other networks still prevent many consumers from having
total freedom when it comes to choosing a provider.

Now Verizon, the only wireless carrier that sold its phones unlocked out of the
box, is reversing course. The company said earlier this week it would begin
locking the phones it sells to consumers for an undetermined period of time,
which will prevent them from using a SIM card from another carrier.
But Verizon promised it would eventually unlock the device after activation.
The company hasn't said how long that period would be.

Verizon said it's doing this to deter criminals from stealing phones, which are
often stolen en route to retail stores or from the stores themselves.
Unlocked phones make attractive targets because they can be resold on the black
market or used overseas with different carriers. That's particularly the case
for iPhones, which are a top target for thieves because of their high resale
value.

Because I get so many questions about the difference between locked versus
unlocked phones and what it means to the average wireless customer, I've put
together this FAQ for my Ask Maggie readers to summarize the basics.

What's the difference between a locked and unlocked phone?
The difference is that a locked phone has a software code on it that prevents
you from using it on another network. An unlocked phone either doesn't have the
software lock on it or someone was able to get a code that unlocks the
software. Once a device is unlocked, you can pop out the SIM card and put in a
different SIM and get service.

What's the benefit of having an unlocked phone?
The biggest benefit of having an unlocked phone is that if you want to switch
wireless operators, you can easily do that. All you have to do is pop in a new
SIM and sign up for service. There's no need to buy a new phone.
This is great because it lets you shop around for the cheapest service instead
of being stuck with a particular carrier because you don't want to buy a new
phone.

This flexibility can also come in handy for people traveling overseas. It's
usually less expensive to use a local wireless service while traveling abroad.
And again, you simply pop out the SIM card in your phone and replace it with
one from a local carrier. And voila! You will have a new local number and it
will be cheaper to make calls in country and access the internet than if you
used a US carrier's service that would require roaming on the foreign network.

Does GSM vs CDMA still matter?
Yes, the voice networks of US wireless carriers still use two fundamentally
different technologies GSM and CDMA. Sprint and Verizon use CDMA, while AT&T
and T-Mobile along with most of the rest of the world use GSM.

The good news is that phones are a bit more compatible and portable among
carriers than they were a few years ago. But phone makers, like Apple, still
tend to make multiple versions of their phones so you need to know which model
you're buying before you can know if you can take it to another carrier.
For instance, Apple sells two versions of the iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus and X.
Unlocked versions of these phones that aren't sold through a carrier are co
