Re: new mac books

2019-06-03 Thread 'Shawn Krasniuk' via MacVisionaries
Hi Janina. In Mojave, the 2017 models did make the startup chime. I'm currently
beta testing Catalina which is 10.15 so I can't say if it's still there or not.

Yeah I was kind of sad when I heard they got rid of that. I don't
think there was a good reason for this.

RE: new mac books

2019-06-03 Thread Simon Fogarty
Don't know why they removed something that has been part f the apple computer
world for many many years,

It use to indicate that all services were functioning correctly.
Oh and that wally was charging but whether that still fits I can't be sure.

Yes, I'm not surprised. I'm just not recalling exactly when it was removed from
what models, and whether or not it's now too late to pick up any that still
have it unused.

As to why, I suspect it's as simple as most sighted computer users, perhaps I
should say many sighted users have a strong aversion to automated sounds from
their machines, even at the boot stage.

However, what is not understandable is why this can't be a configurable option
those of us who rely on it might choose to invoke in ou machine profiles.

I think someone filed a bug, but I also think it was a bug too restricted by
machine model. I could be wrong.

Trying to figure out if the problem is on Apple's end, or due to our lousy

I can not be sure,

Hi,

Hmmm, I'm not sure that access to an Apple Store is really a consideration up
here. The nearest one is about 500 km south of here. I guess that if you
don't have any at all in NZ, then you're doing better, but not a factor in my

Hi,

I've not heard of such a thing and I really doubt that it will ever be an
option. They may design a new non-butterfly option at some point, but I
believe, from history, that once they move forward with something like the new
design, you're out of luck with them going back.

Apart from only being able to have 16GB ram in them it’s an ok machine if

However what I’m really wondering is if it’s really possible for apple to put

I’ve been using a mac book pro 2018 for almost a year and I still can’t get use

Preferring my 11” MBA keyboard.
Does anyone know if there is such a customize option for the mac book line?

2019-06-03 Thread Simon Fogarty
It's now 1:09PM Tuesday here in NZ and it's still not available on the web or
apple tv.

I've been trying to play it for a few hours and it's just a message saying that
it will be available soon.
The web just gives links to the different sections of the presentation

Re: Voice Over and annotations in pages.

2019-06-03 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
That might well be true, as long as Pages supports all of the necessary
features of the original Microsoft Word document. When I last read a review,
Pages didn’t support everything. My impression is that LibreOffice is more
comprehensive in its feature support, but that isn’t accessible on the Mac. (It
is somewhat under Linux, but not including comments and change tracking.)

Hi,

If you use pages it will convert a word doc with comments into pages and when
you export back to word it retains comments so it is easier, I think to do all
this kind of editing in pages.

My experience is that comments and change tracking can crash Microsoft Word and

This is also an area in which Microsoft Word for Mac could benefit from
accessibility improvements, although, on the positive side, it doesn’t seem to
crash as its Windows counterpart does.

I tend to avoid word processors when writing my own documents, but I sometimes
need to collaborate on Microsoft Word files, or to submit documents in that
format.

Hi,

Well I am grateful as well for this feature: I mean it is fantastic. Yesterday
I was trying to make comments and reply in a word document, but neither jaws or
n v d a were working as expected in office 365. It might have been that there
were so many comments and insertions that both screen readers crushed out.
Therefore, I turned on my mac and everything was smooth sailing from that point
on. The only thing that I find a bit annoying is that when I want to read the
document with no distractions, voice over keeps verbalizing the first comment
in an annotation, but I guess I just will have to copy the text on textedit and
turn back to pages each time I want to make a new comment or reply to a
previous one.

Hello everyone,

My question is simple:

How to stop voice over from reading comments and annotations on pages?

I’ve tried checking all the options related to hiding comments under the view
menu, but nothing seems to work. I use low verbosity level as the default
verbosity for voice over, and I’ve already looked for something in voice over
utilities that can be related to comments or annotations but I haven’t found
anything.

Does someone know how to do this?

Can Grub be installed on a recent Mac? If so, it might be your solution.

I know their UEFI implementation is non-standard, but it's still a worthwhile
question.

I note that grub offers the option of playing sound. If one wants sound

Your sucky internet service. Stream was fine for me.

Sorry Donna, but, you kind of described it that way.

Re: Dragging and dropping on the Mac

2019-06-03 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries
I don't know what was going on but after all the TM files were
copied to the new location, it still kept doing something. I had to stop
the process and found that at least 100gigs was added.

And now since I had rebooted, the troublesome partition is not
mountable. As soon as it mounts I will format it and test it a while
before I out it to use again.

Hi,

Sorry, I led you astray.  I missed a command in the instructions.  Too
much going on here, I guess.  Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to
it.  Try these instructions instead:

1.  Make sure that the app window where you wish to drop is open.
2.  Navigate to the Applications folder.
3.  Navigate to the app you wish to drag.
4.  press VO-cmd-f5 (add FN if on a laptop) to make sure that the mouse
is where VO is announcing.

5.  Press VO-cmd-shift-space to pick it up.  VO will announce "Mouse down".
6.  Use App Chooser to get to the app where you plan to drop.
7.  Navigate to the drop location, press VO-cmd-f5 (add FN if on a
laptop) to bring the mouse to VO.

For #7, make sure that you've interacted with the area where you're
supposed to drop if it is a table, scroll area or some other special
element.

8.  Press VO-cmd-shift-space to drop.  VO will announce "Mouse up" to
let you know that it was released.

That's what I get for being in a hurry and not checking over my
instructions.  Hope this works better for you.

Hi,

That version of Drag & Drop does not normally work in the situation
you're outlining.  Try using the original Drag & Drop method.  Make
sure that the app window where you wish to drop is open.  Navigate to
the Applications folder, navigate to the app you wish to drag, press
VO-cmd-f5 (add FN if on a laptop) to pick it up.  VO will announce

Sometimes, even this method will not work.  Drag Drop is an awkward
method for these sorts of actions, but it appears that many developers
like to use it for the sighted world.

Hi list,

What are your experiences with dragging and dropping on the Mac? I
probably never managed to succesfully do it when I tried it and have
tried it it for the last two days, without succes again.

This is what I am trying to do and how I do it:

I want to drag an app onto another app. I open the app on which the
other app has to be dropped.
Then I open up the Application folder, select the desired app and then
press vo+comma  to mark it for dragging.
After that I switch with command+tab to the destinated app and press
vo+period. I hear some moving sound, but get the message that it could
not be dropped.
I have been thinking that its perhaps only possible when both app and
Finder windows are visible, but have no idea if this is the case and
how to get it done if possible.

Copying and pasting doesn’t work either.

Anyone have some advice or ideas?

Lots of thanks in advance!

Ronald

I note that grub offers the option of playing sound. If one wants sound
in a grub mediated boot, one is able to add a directive to provide that.

Re: new mac books

2019-06-03 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Yes, I'm not surprised. I'm just not recalling exactly when it was
removed from what models, and whether or not it's now too late to pick
up any that still have it unused.

As to why, I suspect it's as simple as most sighted computer users,
perhaps I should say many sighted users have a strong aversion to
automated sounds from their machines, even at the boot stage.

However, what is not understandable is why this can't be a configurable
option those of us who rely on it might choose to invoke in ou machine
profiles.

I think someone filed a bug, but I also think it was a bug too
restricted by machine model. I could be wrong.

Hi,

I'm not sure why they removed it either. I've made my noise to some Apple
System Engineers, but really haven't got any traction. There's probably some
firmware level security reason, but I'm not smart enough to know it.

The MBP models no longer have the Boot Chime. I have the 2017 model and it
does not have the Boot Chime. I'm pretty sure that all the new release models

Re: Buying a mac: back to the drawing board

2019-06-03 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Absolutely agree with getting the more powerful system. It will remain
your friend far longer that way.

I also agree with Simon's point that you might want more storage.

PS: Anymore I personally consider 32Gb RAM a minimal system. I prefer as
much RAM as I can afford, with my second priority being a more capable
CPU. I would note that I also look for CPU with significant L2 cache.

So, more storage is third in my personal priorities. Yes, you probably
should go to 512, but you can always add storage via USB 3.x ports.
That's not a bad option given this is not a portable system intended for
use on an airplane tray table.

Best,

Janina

Hi,

If you use pages it will convert a word doc with comments into pages and when
you export back to word it retains comments so it is easier, I think to do all
this kind of editing in pages.

Re: Voice Over and annotations in pages.

2019-06-03 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
My experience is that comments and change tracking can crash Microsoft Word and
both JAWS and NVDA, in the Windows environment. I’ve lost work as a result.

Re: Voice Over and annotations in pages.

2019-06-03 Thread Anne Robertson

What I do when reading through a translation with change tracking on, is to
select all and paste into a TextEdit document. That way, I can read through the
whole thing as it would appear with all the changes accepted.
Cheers,

Anne
