Once you type a URL or a search query into the address field, you then press
enter and then navigate to the web content area, just like you would do in any
other web browser on any other platform/OS.

Re: Not Finding Network in System Preference?

2020-12-05 Thread Dave Carlson
Fazil,
At this point it sounds like you need to tell your Mac the IP address of your
Wi-Fi router. If your other computer and iPHone are able to use that Wi-Fi and
get connected, I don’t know what else to suggest.
Something very basic has not been set up on your Mac.
Under System Preferences, in the Network section, is Wi-Fi showing that it’s
connected? If not, your problem starts there.

Would that turn on quicktime from anywhere? The problems isn’t really starting
play but navigating from zoom to the video player. If quick time or whatever
could be started from zoom that would make it possible to turn off voice over
thereby eliminating the possibility of the system voice interfering with
things.
VLC is a bit easier to manage. For whatever reason, the hot keys in Quicktime

Thanks much, Mr. Cohn.

I followed your instructions. My network was checked and when I hit enter key

Any other suggestions?

Hello,

If you press VO-M twice, you should arrive in the menu extras area of the menu
bar. Now moving right until you hear wifi.

At this point you usually need to press VO-space to activate the menu. Move up
and down the menu until you find the network you want to connect to and then
press return.

At this point the Mac should ask you for any credentials you might need. Note,
if you already have an iPhone, then the iPhone might push the WIFi password to
your computer if bluetooth is on for both systems, and in fact if anybody in
the network has an Apple product running a current OS, it should be able to
push the password to you, I can't remember the exact request process.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

In my experience, it doesn’t matter where on the watch screen you do the
1-finger double tap to activate Taptic time. Anywhere should do it.
Doing a 1-finger double tap will get you the time in hour:minutes, and a
1-finger triple tap will tell you just the minutes of the hour.
It is a nice feature.

I’m pretty sure that Big Sur will run on your late 2013 iMac. I think the
cutoff is 2012 and earlier Macs that won’t take Big Sur.
To find out, go to System Preferences > Software Update, and see if the Big Sur
update is available.

Re: help with mac mail

2020-12-05 Thread Brad Snyder
Jonathan is correct about the recent recipient list. I have experienced this
same thing when replying to messages from this list.
If you type “macvisionaries@googlegroups.com
” in the To field of a new mail
message, then the group address will be in your Mac Mail previous recipients
list going forward.

Hello,
Your first issue is because of "recent recipients". You probably replied to a

contacts and create a contact for the Macvisionaries list with the e-mail
address, then Macintosh Mail should put your Alias name there instead of Donna.

In terms of the Junk folder, in BigSir, they hide the "All Junk" folder by
default. there was a conversation about adding it back in, but I can't
remember the process correctly while testing before sending this message. There
is a area in the mail preferences about what to do with junk mail, but the only
way I can find my Junk folders is to inspect the individual mail address I have
att.

Re: Big Sur has my MacBook Pro hard drive held prisoner

2020-12-05 Thread Jonathan Cohn
BigSir has done things in a different way from all earlier os's. The main
system is a snapshot that is readonly and very hard protected. If you look at
Macintosh HD< you should see two volumes within it, one the system volume and
the other data. I expect you can only change the data one. Also, you might want
to temporarily turn off System Integrity Protection. Do some googling. Or you
might just want to create a new user if it is user settings that are causing
issues.
The other option I can think of is to use a USB or connected external drive
with a BigSir installer on it. I have actually been able to boot my a Macintosh
from a time machine drive to do major work, but that was with Catalina, so
things might have changed.
Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: help with mac mail

2020-12-05 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,
Your first issue is because of "recent recipients". You probably replied to a
message from Donna, and since it actually went to the list, apple added her
name and the macvisionaries address to your recent recipient list. If you open
contacts and create a contact for the Macvisionaries list with the e-mail
address, then Macintosh Mail should put your Alias name there instead of Donna.

In terms of the Junk folder, in BigSir, they hide the "All Junk" folder by
default. there was a conversation about adding it back in, but I can't
remember the process correctly while testing before sending this message. There
is a area in the mail preferences about what to do with junk mail, but the only
way I can find my Junk folders is to inspect the individual mail address I have
att.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: VMware and no audio while using windows 10 as the guest operating system. Any suggestions on how I can get audio?

2020-12-05 Thread Jonathan Cohn
In systems newer then Catalina, you need to give VMWare access to several
things in the privacy area. One of these should be sound. The other possibility
is to make sure that you have a virtual sound card enabled on the VM. I have
never started from scratch on creating a VM, but in the settings area, there
are places to create virtual networks, disk drives and other I/O devices.
But again, first make sure that VMWare has all the permissions enabled in
system settings privacy.

Re: Connecting My Mac to WIfi?

2020-12-05 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,
If you press VO-M twice, you should arrive in the menu extras area of the menu

Preparin for Watch SE arrival.

2020-12-05 Thread Jonathan Cohn
For years while on this list, I have deleted anything with the subject line of
watch. Now because of fall monitoring, and falling down a set of stairs earlier
this year, my wife is presenting me with a Apple Watch for Chanuka.
So, what else can I do reasonably with this besides monitoring my health?
What is this about tapping time feedback.
How do I get just the notifications I want on the watch!
Thanks!

Re: system voice irritation

2020-12-05 Thread Jonathan Cohn
For QuickTime, I am sure I could create an AppleScript that just tells
quicktime to either toggle playing or start playing. I don't know if VLC
accepts apple events, but at least you could create a automation that would
tell VLC to open a file.
In terminal this would be something close to:
open -a vlc myMP3File.mp3
Which could be encapsulated into a AppleScript or Automation with the "do shell
script" command.
Feel free to write me off list if you want details on doing this.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

When you hear voiceOver say “Safari has no windows”, you should do CMD + N, to
open a new Safari window.
Then do CMD + L, to make sure focus is on the address field, and type in
whatever it is you want to do with Safari.

you bring up the google search page?
I believe if you open Safari and the Internet is not available, that a
diagnostic window will be offered. If you can get to Google then you should
probably try running a speed test. I used to use the Apple Network Utility and
recommend pinging 137.39.1.3 but Apple has removed this utility, so if you
want to do network testing, you must open a terminal window.

Since you said that other computers in your house are working, it might be that
your ISP is limiting the number of connected devices.

Hi All,

I was able to solve my Eero VoiceOver accessibility issues by reinstalling the

RE: Not Finding Network in System Preference?

2020-12-05 Thread Fazil
When I open Safari, VoiceOver says:

“Safari has no windows.”

Should I assume that I do not have internet connection on this Mac?

Thanks!

If you have four bars then it is not wifi strength. First things first, can
you bring up the google search page?

I believe if you open Safari and the Internet is not available, that a
diagnostic window will be offered. If you can get to Google then you should
probably try running a speed test. I used to use the Apple Network Utility and
recommend pinging 137.39.1.3 but Apple has removed this utility, so if you
want to do network testing, you must open a terminal window.

Since you said that other computers in your house are working, it might be that
your ISP is limiting the number of connected devices.

Hi,

Do a vo plus m twice. Arrow over to the right and you will find a menu called
wifi. Arrow down to your network’s name and vo space on it. If you have a
password, it will ask for it if you’ve never logged your mac onto your wifi.

2020-12-05 Thread Fazil
Thanks much, Mr. Cohn.

Actually, this is just my third day with Mac, I, therefore, am guessing that
something is fundamentally wrong on my part. I am not doing something right.

What I do is that I press command+spacebar to bring up spotlight and then type
here Youtube and expect the website open but it doesn’t open.

I am doing something wrong, right?

Thanks!

handbrake. That’s my go to app. Get a copy of the video from YouTube using a

Re: Can anyone recommend a router that is more accessible and user friendly than the Netgear Orby?

2020-12-05 Thread Robert Carter
Hi,

I am finding the latest update to the Eero 6 iPhone app much less accessible
with VoiceOver. I am seeing lots of unlabeled buttons and I cannot change to
any of the tabs other than the home tab while VoiceOver is running. Are you
Eero users seeing this as well? I am running iOS 14.2 on an iPhone 12 Pro.

I did call and report this to Eero tech support.

Please everyone report these bugs & similar to apple including screen

youTube to Mp3

2020-12-05 Thread Christina
Greetings,

Can someone please either tell me how to or recommend an accessible Mac or iOS
app to turn a video on youTube into an audio only Mp3.

Thanks so much because this video isn't something I can purchase anywhere and I
only need the audio since I can't see the video.

Re: Can anyone recommend a router that is more accessible and user friendly than the Netgear Orby?

2020-12-05 Thread jeff `greene
Hi Donna,
I recently picked up a TP-Link AX6000 wifi 6 router. You set it up
with the tp-link tether app on the iphone. It is really easy to setup
and I've had no problems with the router. My last router was the
Gryphon Unhackable router and its setup is really easy too.
Hope this helps! Jeff

VMware and no audio while using windows 10 as the guest operating system. Any suggestions on how I can get audio?

2020-12-05 Thread maurice Mines
Good afternoon my subject line put in much states my problem. The only access
that I have to my virtual machine it is an older brilliant 40 Braille display.
When I woke and the notification area the message appears no audio output
device installed. Just for the record I am running vmware fusion Version 12
which of course is running. Mac OS Big Sur. This is running on a 2020 MacBook
Pro 13 inch. If I can't come up with a good solution to this problem, i'll have
to pay VMware $30 for tech-support. From what I've been able to read it doing
some research it appears to be a known issue but the solution does not appear
to be rattle at hand. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am pretty much open
to anything. Hopefully someone else on the list has had this situation and
hopefully has found a solution for it?

Sincerely Maurice Mines.

Re: Not Finding Network in System Preference?

2020-12-05 Thread Jonathan Cohn
If you have four bars then it is not wifi strength. First things first, can
you bring up the google search page?
I believe if you open Safari and the Internet is not available, that a
diagnostic window will be offered. If you can get to Google then you should
probably try running a speed test. I used to use the Apple Network Utility and
recommend pinging 137.39.1.3 but Apple has removed this utility, so if you
want to do network testing, you must open a terminal window.

Since you said that other computers in your house are working, it might be that
your ISP is limiting the number of connected devices.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: How do I go to a specific page in a Pages document?

2020-12-05 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Well, if this is not working then you can open up the view menu and go down to
the Goto menu. The last item in this sub menu is goto page.

Best wishes,

mac OS big sur: alex compact and local voice playing one after the other

2020-12-05 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi List,

Here's a funny but very annoying bug on mac OS big sur.

I restarted voice over, and now when I change interaction in whatever app I'm
in, such as a change of line, change of cell in numbers, going through Vo
elements across mail, or any of these types of actions, voice over keeps
switching me between alex compact (which I chose as default, as well as all
other interaction settings, with all of them at same rates) and the local
rachel speech synth which sounds very weird because the rate is set to low for
alex, which reflects on this system voice.

Now I'm having to listen to 2 different voices across my work. Anyone fixed
this?

thanks

Re: Can anyone recommend a router that is more accessible and user friendly than the Netgear Orby?

2020-12-05 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
It sounds really attractive, but right now I don't have the time or the
inclination to take on that learning curve.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Can anyone recommend a router that is more accessible and user friendly than the Netgear Orby?

2020-12-05 Thread 'KliphnShari Miller' via MacVisionaries
Well, there is no learning curve with Eero, it works out of the box, no QR
code’s to scan, and your up and running in less than 10 minutes. I don’t know
what people SSH is necessary for, but this router option even makes port
forwarding easy. JMO

OpenWRT is the most accessible/flexible option, but the learning curve is steep.
SSH access is wonderful but you need some background to effectively use it.

Interesting. I’ll keep an eye on those developments, but right now, I want an
easy, low-maintenance solution. :) The Eero is sounding really good. Thanks for
this info, though.
Cheers,
Donna

This is really, really, helpful. Thank you, Kliph. My saga with the Orby
yesterday was so obnoxious that I felt like I was in that old sixties comedy
skit where the guy was trying to make a phone call and the operator was being
utterly unhelpful. I don’t ever want to see another Netgear product in my life!
Lol

I think we’ll be picking up an Eero.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Can anyone recommend a router that is more accessible and user friendly than the Netgear Orby?

2020-12-05 Thread 'KliphnShari Miller' via MacVisionaries
I 2nd the Eero! It is 100 percent accessible. I have the eero pro 6, mainly
because my house is 3000 square feet, 3 people work from home, and the reviews
are 2nd to non. It’s accessible from phone and iPad, you can block specific
websites, even have categories like social media blocked. My kids are doing
distance learning, so I can block YouTube, twitter, facebook on there school
devices, but on there personal ones I allow YouTube and instagram. You can
pause and resume internet access, and you can access the device even when not
at home. Can’t say enough about there customer service also. I had a unit
that was defective, they overnighted the replacement. The pro is a bit spendy
but the home version is affordable. 129 for 1, and there is a discount if you
buy the 3 pack. HTH

Re: Reseting NVRAM on a Mac with a windows installed via bootcamp

2020-12-05 Thread 'Robert Cole' via MacVisionaries
Hi,
I did this last week on my 2015 iMac with Boot camp.
There were no problems.
As the Mac started and the chime sounded, I pressed and held down
R+P+Command+Option until a second chime sounded.

Re: Visiting YouTube Via Mac?

2020-12-05 Thread Muhammad Fayed
In following two links from Apple support, you can find a little explanation
for them. In that explanation, they don’t mention wi-fi related settings, but
it did the trick for me. According to my info as a Computer and Communication
Engineering graduate, I think it contains hardware managing settings related to
sound, … (and other things they mentioned in the articles). They just won’t
explain it more because most Apple users are not computer engineers. Plus,
their hardware differs from its competitors.

looking to sell my 2018 macbook pro to anyone living in Australia on list.

2020-12-05 Thread Michael Marshall
hey all,
I am selling my 2018 macbook pro 15 inch.
I'm looking to upgrade to the new m1 mac so unfortunately I need to part with
this.
I have done a lot of sound editing with this unit and it has never failed me.
Here are the specs.
Memory: 16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4
Storage: 512 gig SSD.
Processor, 2.9 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i9
Display: Retner.
Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB
USBC ports: 4.
Touch Bar and Touch ID included.
Battery cycles used: 12.
I'm selling the unit for 2600 Plus postage. or courier.
Also comes with original charger and cord.
I'm really sorry that I can't send international but it's just too difficult at
the moment.
I realise the price is steep but the specs were very good and it cost nearly 4
grand to get brand-new.
If anyone is interested, send a message to mightymaggie...@gmail.com

Re: Can anyone recommend a router that is more accessible and user friendly than the Netgear Orby?

2020-12-05 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Absolutely, but in my experience, best means the operating system that
runs on the hardware, not the hardware itself.

If you want maximum accessibility, you'd be hard pressed to do better
than Open WRT whose web page is:

http://openwrt.org

Currently, I'm using the Linksys WRT1900AC which comes with pretty awful
software by default, so it may take some sighted assistance to flash the
OpenWRT firmware onto it. But, the flashing task is actually quite
straight forward. And, once accomplished, you've a highly accessible
router/switch/WAP all in one. You can drive it via the web browser of
your choice, or from a command line via ssh from your Mac terminal. Your
choice.

PS: I spent some time last weekend looking at where things have gotten
to vis a vis the next generation of these devices, those which conform
to 802.11AX also branded as wifi6. There are some compelling hardware
choices, but OpenWRT support is still in fairly early development, so
I'm staying away for the forseeable future. But, I expect the day will
come when a device like the Linksys MR9600 or the Netgear Nighthawk MK63
will support OpenWRT. When that day dawns, I'll be a buyer and a
flasher.

I have had the exact same issue after waking my MBP from sleep or after a
starting it. I have solved it by reseting the NVRAM/PRAM.

Check the following steps depending on the kind of Mac you have:
https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT204063

You may need to reset the SMC as well:
