Mark on AirPods Pro

2020-12-29 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I recently purchased AirPods Pro. Until now, I have only ever used the
original AirPods.

I have to say that I am, to my surprise, impressed. I'm not sure how but,
for whatever reason, the sound is better in the Pro model than it is on the
original. The best part is that there is not too much bass; always a
concern to me as I have no hearing loss in the lower registry of the sound
spectrum.

The transparency mode is the absolute best.

Now I paired my Pro model with my beloved 8 Plus which is running iOS 13.07;
so I realize that I do not have all of the functionality that comes with iOS
14. Still, the AirPods Pro is impressive.

It would appear that, in order to have VoiceOver switch between iPhone and
Watch OS, one must invoke Siri on the target device.

Not perfect but, at least, not horrible. I wish the Pro model could pair to
multiple devices as this would, in theory, allow one to hear sounds from two
separate devices which, again in theory, would allow VoiceOver to remain
active from any paired device.

Special thanks to list member Ed for taking my calls and helping me learn
how to switch out the ear tips.

Mark

Re: additional voices?

2020-12-29 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I'm not sure about frequency, I believe tmost of these voices are the same as
what JAWS offers.
Karen, Samantha.
One thing with the Apple voice setting area, one can adjust both
pitch and intonation.
My understanding of intonation is how flat the voice will b.

Re: Recovering data from iPads

2020-12-29 Thread 'Eileen Scrivani' via MacVisionaries
Michael,

I am not sure what your solution might be, but you have one thing on your side
which is you at least know the Apple Id. If you try doing a reset on either the
password or passcode the device might send a text message to confirm the
change. The question is where will it send that code – if its one of the locked
devices then you’re still in the same problem. Have you tried calling Apple
accessibility to see what they might suggest.

Apple was helpful to me when my husband passed, but then I knew the codes to
his Apple stuff.

Subject: Recovering data from iPads

Hello everyone,

Recently a very close friend of mine died, and I inherited two iPads that he
and his wife owned. One of the iPads is three years old, and the other is five
or six years old. On one of the iPads, there are apparently a lot of pictures
that family members would like to have, provided I can gain access to them and
send them.

Here are my problems and questions:

Although I have the Apple user IDs for the iPads, I do not have the passwords
or unlock codes. Since I didn’t know that I would one day be getting the
iPads, I never asked for them, prior to my friend’s death Is there any way for
me to recover their pictures?

If there is no way to gain access to the content of these iPads, how do I do a
complete reset and start setting them up for my own personal use, using my
current Apple ID? I have never done a complete restore to an iPad, but I do
back up my iPhone to the Cloud regularly. If someone can refer me to a podcast
that addresses these issues, that’d be great.

With gratitude for any thoughts and best wishes for 2021,

Mike

Night hawk app on the I Phone.

2020-12-29 Thread 'Kawal Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
Hello.

Tomorrow it’s good bye to my AirPort Extreme as I have just acquired the
Nighthawk Tri-Band AX12 12-Stream AX WiFi Router.

I downloaded the Night Hawk app on my I phone and turned on the screen
recognition to try and check the box for the terms and conditions but the box
is not checking.

When I turn on the screen recognition, it plays havoc with all the apps on my I
phone and I can’t use the phone unless I turn that screen recognition off.

I called Apple Accessibility and they are not convinced that the screen
recognition is doing this as they say that can’t be so.They just say turn
the Recognition off.

I have no idea how I will use the Night Hawk app if I can’t get it to work.

Kawal.

Using checklists in notes on iPhone

2020-12-29 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

Has anyone tried using checklists in the notes app in iOS? I just tried to do
it and have I’m having all kinds of weird problems. When I tried to add an item
to my checklist, instead of adding an item it marked the last item as completed
which it was not. Also, it appears that some items in my note are part of the
checklist but others are not, and I don’t seem to be able to just make the
whole thing one checklist. Does anyone know how this is supposed to work?
Thanks,
Donna

I'll try it the next time it happens. For now, an easy solution is that
I deleted a folder of old backups under another name. Trash is now
emptying. Slowly.

Re: additional voices?

2020-12-29 Thread Karen Lewellen

Hi Shawn,
Thanks for that information.
My personal situation is that, due to experiencing a rather unique
secondary disability, I have yet to find a safe voice to use. One that
does not at best stimulate my brain's dizzy centres, or at worst create
something a bit like a Cesar.
My last try, in March, involved a siri voice on an Iphone, which made me
rather sick
indeed.
for the moment Hardware, gosh I wish someone had saved the digital
dectalk voices, as I use a hardware decktalk voice now, seems safer than
software strict like Ios...believe me its complex even for my medical
team.
What I hoped for from the list was frequency related information anything
that might hint at quality before I try.
I would not be using a strict 64 bit edition of Macos regardless for
other reasons. Still, I imagine there are at least 20 or more options
just in the regular non-siri voices.

Thanks,
Karen

Mac. We can now use Siri voices. They added those voices in Catalina and they
can be used in Big Sur as well.

There are approximately, 285 voices that are available as downloads from Apple. If you

Pressing this brings up a dialog with a table of voices. Each voice has a
checkbox next to it to determine if if it will be enabled for use in VoiceOver.
After the list of voices is a play, cancel, and a OK button. The Play button

Re: Time Machine Doesn't Purge Old Backups

2020-12-29 Thread Steve Matzura
In my message, I clearly did say "other than trashing it." So why did
you give me the answer I specifically requested not be given? What a
ridiculous notion--my drive fills up with perfectly good backups, so
when I can't make any more, I'll just throw 'em all away. What a
fantastically bad idea that is! I hope you never run into a situation
where you need a backup and don't have one. That happened to me once and
only once in the 70's. If one can't learn from one's own experience,
learn from others' counsel. Do the purge yourself. It's more work, but
it'll save you in the end some day.

Re: Setting up "All Inboxes" on IOS

2020-12-29 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
Paul,
My apologies, I thought there was some thing in there for that. But I could not
find it on my current iPhone. Perhaps, this is only available on the Macintosh.
Which is too bad, because on the Mac one can always create smart mailboxes to
pick messages with specific criteria, but there is no way to easily do that on
IOS..

Re: Recovering data from iPads

2020-12-29 Thread Brad Snyder
Yes, it also said the magic words “it may be possible”, which also means it may
not be possible.
There is another possibility that the article doesn’t mention. If you have the
original receipt from when the device in question was purchased, then Apple can
help access a locked device. Again, this isn’t much help if the individual is
already deceased and the receipt is not available.

Maybe, reselect the disk again and see if that causes it to start removing
oldest backups? I’ve not encountered this. I usually start deleting old

Re: Recovering data from iPads

2020-12-29 Thread Brad Snyder
This article pretty much says that if you don’t have the deceased individual's
AppleID password or device passcode, you can’t access anything.
The rest of the article is full of “it may be possible” and other filler that

Believe it or not, there’s an article about this. Unfortunately, it’s from a

Setting up "All Inboxes" on IOS

2020-12-29 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello Jonathan,
Alas I do not see an “All Junk” mail box while editing mail boxes on my iPhone.
I do see and have selected All Inboxes, All Archive, All Drafts, and All
Rubbish. On my iMac running the latest Bigsur I do see an “all Junk” mail box.
Do I need to do anything in the IOS Settings for Mail to get the All Junk mail
box? Can any other listers see an “
all Junk” mail box in IOS?
Best … Paul Hopewell

I like Tom also. I have a hearing impairment and find his deep voice the
most intelligible.

I find alex a bother, too cute by far with those distracting attempts to sound
human but missing the mark.

I use tom which has none of the alex faults but perfectly intelligible and does
not draw attention to itself; like most of the other voices.

That is one of the novelty voices that add sound effects. That one makes each
sylable sound like the overtones of a bell ringing. There
about 4 of them. One I don't recall sings the text. Easily found on googlee
using os10 novelty voices.

Recovering data from iPads

2020-12-29 Thread Michael Busboom
Hello everyone,

Recently a very close friend of mine died, and I inherited two iPads that he
and his wife owned. One of the iPads is three years old, and the other is five
or six years old. On one of the iPads, there are apparently a lot of pictures
that family members would like to have, provided I can gain access to them and
send them.

Here are my problems and questions:

Although I have the Apple user IDs for the iPads, I do not have the passwords
or unlock codes. Since I didn’t know that I would one day be getting the
iPads, I never asked for them, prior to my friend’s death. Is there any way
for me to recover their pictures?

If there is no way to gain access to the content of these iPads, how do I do a
complete reset and start setting them up for my own personal use, using my
current Apple ID? I have never done a complete restore to an iPad, but I do
back up my iPhone to the Cloud regularly. If someone can refer me to a podcast
that addresses these issues, that’d be great.

With gratitude for any thoughts and best wishes for 2021,

Mike

Re: additional voices?

2020-12-29 Thread 'Shawn Krasniuk' via MacVisionaries
Hi Karen. Some voices on the Mac are used for novelty purposes. Bells basically
talks, or in this case, sings like a grandfather clock. There are other novelty
voices that I'm not going to get indepth about because it'll take all night to
do so. But I can tell you one voice I'm glad they finally let us use on the
Mac. We can now use Siri voices. They added those voices in Catalina and they
can be used in Big Sur as well.

Regards,
Shawn,

Pressing this brings up a dialog with a table of voices. Each voice has a
