Re: question for those of you who do not use Time Machine to migrate data

2021-05-10 Thread Brad Snyder
Donna,

A folder that is “On My Mac” will not move to a new Mac automatically as I
described.
Only folders and content that is on your email providers server will transfer
this way.
If your provider is for example Gmail, I would suggest you create a folder in
your Gmail account called “Mac Stuff”, or whatever you want to call it, and
move items from the folder on your Mac into that folder. This way, the items
will reside on your email providers server, and will be available in your email
account’s folder hierarchy on your new Mac.

Hi Brad,

I know that's true for mail folders associated with email accounts, but what
about others? For example, I have a folder called Mac Stuff where I save posts,
many from this list, that have instructions for doing things on the Mac that I
think I might need to refer back to some day. That mailbox is listed under On
my Mac. Though most of the mails in that folder are from this mail account,
not all of them are. Will that get moved over as well? If not, how do I move
it? So far, a google search as not proven fruitful.
Cheers,
Donna

Prior to the M1, some VoiceOver users reported serious bugs so I believe that
no OS is perfect.

Sometimes, the fault lies within a particular app.

I don’t know. In the Windows world, there seems to be a steady influx of bugs
that some users experience after each update – even minor updates. Have a look
at
https://www.windowslatest.com

One of my laptops has a Windows 10 installation on it (along with Linux). So
far, I haven’t run into any of the serious bugs reported on the above site, but
it appears that, with each update, some people are encountering issues. That
could encourage them to consider the Mac more closely than they might otherwise
have done. As noted, though, my Windows 10 installation has been stable.
Perhaps I’m lucky. There are accessibility bugs in Windows applications, of
course, but the same is true everywhere.

On the other hand, Microsoft seems to be improving the accessibility of Office
for Mac, so this could also make the Mac increasingly viable for people who
need Microsoft Office and who use screen readers.

The M1 hardware probably attracts some users, too, as you suggest.

Actually, you don't have to use a separate sound card on Windows and can do the
install independently.
The Mac had the accessible installer long before Windows did, however.

Hi I have been a mac user for years. I have an el-braille which of corse uses
windows 10, but I find Mac os to be a much more stable system and you don't
have to pay for SMA'S to keep your screen reader update. Also, if you need to
do a fresh instally don't need a seporate sound card to get sound with
narorator. The *stall can do be done without sited help to do this.

Re: question for those of you who do not use Time Machine to migrate data

2021-05-10 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries

Cheers,
Donna

Hi I have been a mac user for years.  I have an el-braille which of
corse uses windows 10, but I find Mac os to be a much more stable system
and you don't have to pay for SMA'S to keep your screen reader update.
Also, if you need to do a fresh instally don't need a seporate sound
card to get sound with narorator.  The *stall can do be done without
sited help to do this.

If all of the mail is still on the server, it will be downloaded when you access the account on the new machine. Otherwise, I’m sure there is a transfer process that would be best looked up via your favourite Web search engine.. I think Apple Mail can be exported to mbox format, but I haven’t needed it. I keep the mail on the server, and archive it from there, then download the archive files – an advantage of running one’s own mail server. On 5/10/21, 12:48, "'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries" wrote:Hi all, As I have said, my plan with the new M1 Mac is to use Time Machine only to move files. Re: Mac's Appeal to New Switchers?

2021-05-10 Thread Herbie Allen
I originally thought I would be using my 2019 Mac as a Winode’s machine
primarily, but some things have always appealed to me with the Mac that make
me use it a lot more. First, I can use the Siri Voice for VO on the Mac and
phone. I cannot with jaws. Second, iMessaging on the Mac is convenient and I
can paste stuff from it into other documents which has come in handy. The Mac
has improved sound quality even compared to Window’s on Bootcamp. Mac Mail is

Navigate to the point where you would like to begin reading.
Then use the command VO + A, to begin continuous reading from the point of
the VoiceOver cursor.

Hi Rebecca,

The following keyboard commands should work in most native Mac text editing
applications:

CMD + Left Arrow - Go to beginning of current line.
CMD + Right Arrow - Go to end of current line.
CMD + Up Arrow - Go to beginning of document.
CMD + Down Arrow - Go to end of document.

I never have needed to use Page Up or Page Down, but you can try using it
and see if it works as expected.

If you are using an Apple Magic Keyboard that does not have a dedicated
Page Up or Page Down key, try holding down the Fn key, and use the Up/Down
arrows keys for these functions.
Likewise, using the Fn key with the Left and Right arrow keys will perform
the Home and End function.

That depends on what you are doing.

These are text editing commands. If you are in an edit field, then they should
perform the function described.

That depends on what you are doing.
These are text editing commands. If you are in an edit field, then they should
perform the function described.

If you are using an Apple Magic Keyboard that does not have a dedicated Page Up

Likewise, using the Fn key with the Left and Right arrow keys will perform the
Home and End function.

Re: I have a VMware fusion question, please read below.

2021-05-10 Thread Brett Lewis
Hi,
I don't know if you figured this out, but there is the snapshots menu item,
which is part of the virtual machine menu.
You have a list of all your saved snapshots which you can delete by using
the shortcut menu on a snapshot and selecting it. The delete button then
should become available and you can delete it.
This process is a little bit inconsistent but does work.
In that dialog there is also an auto protect button which lets you specify
the number of snapshots to keep.
HTH,
Brett

2021-05-10 Thread skipper8218
I am not a Windows switcher so to speak.
I will continue to use both operating systems, but I was interested in the
ability to use IOS apps on the Mac.
Sadly, there are not as many as I'd like, but I can at least play swift
playgrounds and enjoy a consistent interface, a responsive system, and great
VoiceOver support for native apps.
Catalyst apps leave a lot to be desired.
Curiosity got me into the Mac world.
