Re: Any thoughts on the future of MacBook Pros in light of this WWDC?

2021-06-07 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi Kevin,

For your general information, WWDC stands for World wide Developers conference.
Therefore, the primary focus at WEDC is usually on software, not hardware.
That being said, there have been a few instances when hardware was introduced
at WWDC. Just because I love to share useless information along with more
beneficial info, the last few hardware items introduced at WWDC have since been
discontinued. That is, the full-size HomePod, the iMac Pro and the 10.5” iPad
Pro. Basically, that means nothing other than bad luck, although superstitious
people may think otherwise.

All that being said, the MacBook Pro is here to stay for quite a while in my
opinion. If you can afford it, it’s a wonderful machine.

Later…

Re: Any thoughts on the future of MacBook Pros in light of this WWDC?

2021-06-07 Thread maurice mines
Good afternoon, the only thing about this morning's presentation that very much
concerns me is that it appears that Mac OS Monterey it's very much going to be
designed for the M1 chip. This means that if one Hans a Machine based on the
Intel chip that things might not work as intended in the beginning. In other
words if it's the match that's clearly going to be designed for the new
processor. If one is running the owner processor there may be some challenges.

My largest concern however yes how are they going to implement directional
sound to match up with hearing aids didn't use that directional information.
Because right now hearing aid accessibility definitely has something to be
desired. I am curious to see how while this new feature Will help, or hinder
those of us who we are, and must use hearing aids?

The other thing is I thought I read somewhere, that's safari may get some
accessibility improvements. Again Proof must be in the pudding. Another words
beta testing buy blame people this year ABC critical. And I certainly will a
very much involved in this endeavor because of being deafblind, and also having
a written expression disorder," dyslexia of writing”. These are just my
thoughts.

I hope everyone House OK Great rust of the day.

Maurice mines.

PS I have beta tested either the phone, or my MacBook or at least the last five
or six years. One thing I will never do after last year's fiasco, it's better
test new version of watchOS and less Apple pleasures in writing do not remove
voiceover from any better. Finally whenever I mention that I am a braille user
I get the constant comment but we don't no very many people who use braille. My
only thought here is how do they think we read and write? Just some food for
thought. Considering that an education and outside of education they still
think that less than 20% of us actually read and/or right, are used braille.
This is a very sad commentary.

If I’m wrong,… oh well.

While we don’t necessarily think in visual terms about stuff like this. This
list comprises a group of the most Mac savvy people I know and I’d be
interested if you’d be willing to share your opinions on what the future holds
for laptop hardware in Mac land.

I should get around to saying that my wife and I haven’t upgraded our Mac
hardware since we bought a Mac mini for me and a 27 inch iMac for her in 2010.
We haven’t been able to upgrade the OS on that hardware in years, (10.12.6,)
and we just want to avoid buying new hardware that will, itself be frozen in,

All of you may decide not to express an opinion on any of this. But I’D be
grateful for any thoughts you’d be willing to share.

Thanks,

Re: Moving files from old drive to new drive using terminal

2021-06-07 Thread Jonathan Cohn
This is probably easier done with copy/paste in the finder. Generally, the "mv"
command does not work accross partitions, though it is possible that it has
been extended to do that.
If you want to copy the files then use
cp -R source destination
You might want to add the "force" option which if I remember correctly is the
lower case f. BTW, the R for recursion is a upper case R.
Once the copy is confirmed, using rm -R directory1 directory2 directory3
will remove the directories, again the r is capitalized.
If you are moving from one computer to another the rsync command might help.
Note that all of these commands have man pages and that the man pages are
available either on your computer or the web.

Jonathan

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

A key commander can use all 26 letter keys and all numbers if you use the
numpad commmander version.

Re: Moving files from old drive to new drive using terminal

2021-06-07 Thread dan d.

It depends if you want to duplicate the entire drive or just some folders. The
first can be done with one command, the second requires one or
more commands depending on their location and number of folders. It is easily
done in either case; I have done it many times. Use the cp
copy command as it leaves the original files in case there is a problem, the mv
move command erases the source files.

Let me know and I will provide the exact command syntax to use.

No, it’s an external drive. Also, I should’ve specified that I want to move a
few entire folders and their contents. These are going from my dying IMac to
my external drive…

Thanks!

Applescript commander acting strange.

2021-06-07 Thread Jonathan Cohn
=Hello,

I was listening to the communication about Voiceover issues on Saturday and
somebody complained about the difficulty of using VO-command-space to get to
actions on the notifications. OF course one can always add commanders, but
these end up being limited in the keys you can use.
I know that with Automator one can create "quick actions" and then assign
keyboard commands to them in system preferences
So I fired up the automator tool, created a new quick action automation with
just a do AppleScript in it.
I then added in the AppleScript area the following code:
on run
tell application "VoiceOver"
tell commander
perform command "actions"
end tell
end tell
end run

Editor and verifying that this caused the co-command-space functionality.
I pressed compile, pressed the run button and it appeared to work.
So, I saved it as "voiceover actions".
I set up a keyboard shortcut in system preferences keyboard shortcuts services

Now to test it out…
First issue: in notification center, the keystroke just beeped at me. (so
probably a limitation of Notification not accepting keyboard input.
1Then just to make sure my general logic worked, I tried it in text edit.
Second issue: Got an error:
The action “Run AppleScript” encountered an error: “VoiceOver got an error:
"actions" doesn’t understand the “perform command” message.”

Which is quite strange because it should have been sending the "perform
command" message to commander with an argument of "actions".

If anybody wants to play with this code and see if they can get better results
I would be interested.

Jonathan

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: Bluetooth headphone.

2021-06-07 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

It’s not necessarily that they will hear you better. The mic on the AirPods is
fine. It’s how using the mic AirPod mic instead of a different mic affects the
sound quality. For me, when using my AirPods normally, whether just navigating
around the Mac, or on a call, the sound does not change in the AirPods when I’m
on a call as I use an external desk mic. Again, I’m not speaking of mic sound
quality, it’s the ear-piece sound quality that remains consistent.

Well, the mic is not an issue.
Its more that I hear the sound from others coming through headphones quite

Re: Bluetooth headphone.

2021-06-07 Thread Herbie Allen
Like I said, switching the mic source will solve this issue. Maybe not
practical for FaceTime if you are going around the house, but I use this method
quite a bit if I’m listening to a presentation on Zoom.

Switch the Mic to a new default such as your internal or an external desk
mic. It’s the mic specifically that changes the audio quality and when not
engaged, it acts like your only listening and presents things in the
normal quality. I don’t think I got this trick to work on FaceTime though.

Re: New macbook air & accessibility

2021-06-07 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I’m not aware of any accessibility changes with the M1 vs Intel MacBook Airs.
There are some changes in the way you access the recovery system, which have
actually made it more accessible, but no downfalls as far as I am aware.

As Les mentioned, BootCamp is no longer supported in the M1 architecture. I’ve
not done this myself, as I do not bother with Windows on my Macs, This article’
from 9 to 5 Mac outlines how to install Windows on your Mac using Parallels.

https://9to5mac.com/2021/05/03/the-super-easy-guide-for-installing-windows-on-m1-macs-using-parallels-desktop-16-for-mac-video/

Parallels 16.5 claims full compatibility with M1 Macs. Now the accessibility
and use of screen readers in this environment is not mentioned, so I’m not in
the know for that.

Re: Can i use thunderbolt external drive with Macbook air 2017 that has usb ports only?

2021-06-07 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I’m confused. There is a Mini Display port that doubles as a Thunderbolt port
on the right side of the 2017 MacBook Air, so there should be no adaptor
required. On the right side of this model of MacBook Air, there is the SD Card
slot, a third USB A port and the Mini Display/Thunderbolt port. I have seen
situations where that port fails with some displays, but if all is in working
order, then this port will work for you without any adaptor required.

Hi Andrew,

I can answer your second question. Boot Camp no longer exists and the max with
the M1 chip. As far as I know, running windows at this point would be very
difficult to accomplish. That could change in the future, but right now, it’s
my understanding that you really cannot do it.
