Re: Interested in purchasing a Macbook Air

2021-08-21 Thread Terri Stimmel

Hello everyone,

First of all, I would like to say thank you to all of you who took the
time to try and help me out. I really appreciate all the great
information, and thoughts. It has really helped me to understand things,
when it comes to Macbooks.

Karen asked if I would like to explain my goals. I appreciate this,
because I think that could be helpful. I think it might help me figure
out what exactly I might need.

So my main goal is to be able to purchase a device, such as a Mac, or an
iPad, so that I can record audio. I am huge into collecting audio
described content. We have Spectrum cable. Some of the channels that
carry audio described content that I would like to capture, don't carry
the audio description over my cable box.

However, I can get it, using the Spectrum App.

So I would like to be able to use a program like audio hijack, and
capture the streaming audio. I want to go to the Spectrum site, and
stream the channel I want, and capture the audio description.

That is the main thing I am hoping to do. I could use my windows laptop.
But in order to do this, I would have to go through many steps to make
this happen. Including purchasing a sound card.

But then I would not be able to easily access my laptop for other
things. Such as checking mail, and all the other things that I do.

These are my thoughts. What do you all think?

I would consider purchasing an iPad. I am open to doing this. But when I
had one years ago, the main thing I didn't care for, was how the screen
would sometimes be in colomns. There didn't seem a way to make this
optional. Or stop it from happening. I found this to be rather
frustrating, and chalenging for me.

But also, does the audio hijack program even work on an iPad?

Thank you, and I look forward to hearing what you all might have to say.

I did a similar check with my MacBook Air from 2015 and was offered 300$ for

Re: Interested in purchasing a Macbook Air

2021-08-21 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Terri,
I think you have received excellent advice and recommendations here. While I
agree with not purchasing that particular unit, I think you are wise to look
for a Mac while not spending as much as you would on a new unit. There is
certainly something to be said for evaluating the Mac, as it is much different
than Windows. I can tell you that when I purchased my first Mac several years
ago, I became disenchanted with its performance. Perhaps an Apple Store
representative could have assisted, but at the time, I just didn’t do it and
really preferred Windows. Now, I am very happy with the MacBook Air with the M1
chip. Fortunately, I paid a lot less than I did when I purchased my first Mac.
With the new models, I was happy to get what I wanted, a robust machine for
about what it would have cost to purchase a Windows machine, perhaps even less.
Anyway, good luck with your search, I’m confident you will find something worth
buying.
Best Regards,

Les

Especially since you want it for recording.

I can tell you about my 2014 era 11 inch Airbook. I have 8 gigs RAM and
512 Gb HD. I checked what Apple would give me for it as a trade in when
I bought a Mac Mini last year. They offered me $160. I didn't take the
$160, so I still have it. It's on it's last round of OS upgrades, i.e.
Big Sur.

Not sure what I'll do with the hardware with the next major OS upgrade.
I just know I won't be keeping this old Airbook once running around the
planet becomes normal again.

RE: For Brad Re: Interested in purchasing a Macbook Air

2021-08-21 Thread skipper8218
I apologize for being part of the confusion here.

I can’t keep up with all the mac models and didn’t realize that the Pro line
still had Intel chips.

However, the technical details are not what is important here.

The important thing here is to consider why a person wants a Mac and what they
are going to do with it.

Is the Mac the I right option or would an iPad work just as well.

I wanted a Mac so I could eventually learn to code and also play with Swift
Playgrounds.

I love the Mac’s consistent user interface, but I wish more apps from IOS could
work on the machine and had high hopes for the catalyst project.

Hi Brad,

Yes, you are correct. I apologize if my note came across as a correction to
you. The original response stated information about both the MacBook Air and
the MacBook Pro lines. I was just trying to clarify that your information was
correct, but in addition, the information regarding the MacBook Pro line was
not valid.

Again, my apologies if my response offended you.

I agree with Brad with respect to the 4 Gb of RAM While they may work, your
performance is limited when you only have the 4 Gb of RAM. The newer MacOS’s
like Big Sur have a lot going on in the background and limiting the computer to
4 Gb of RAM will not give you as pleasant, or robust of an experience as when
it’s running 8 Gb or more. The M1 Macs run just great with 8 Gb of RAM and due
to the workings of the processor and bus speeds, 8 Gb does great for most
tasks. Even those more intensive tasks like rendering graphics and video.

Tery,

Youmight be able to get something from apple that is closer to want. Apple
sometimes has refurbished devices on the apple store with better ram and
storage as well as a more mother and could still get at least a couple of
updates at least. HTH.

This is correct.
New MacBook Airs from Apple are available only with the new M1 processor.
Intel MacBook Airs may be available from the refurbished store on Apple.com

Re: For Brad Re: Interested in purchasing a Macbook Air

2021-08-21 Thread Brad Snyder
Because, these are the minimum specs currently available from Apple.
Also, I have had a MacBook Air 2013, with 4 GB RAM and 128 SSD HD.
While you can get by with only 4 GB of RAM, the 128 GB SSD is too small and
will quickly fill with apps and data, leaving no wiggle room for updating, or
anything else.

If you are interested in good deals on Macs, check out the refurbished Macs on
the Apple Store, or you can look at the B Photo website.

Hello Brad,

I was wondering, why do you recommend that if I choose a Mac Air, that I make
sure it has at least 8 gigs of Ram, and at least a 256 Gig drive?

I am just curious as to your reasons.

Thank you,

Terri
