How to Reduce Delay Between Successive Keypresses on Mac

2022-01-19 Thread Dave Carlson
What I’m referring to is the following example:

I’m in the folder view in Mail.
I press the “J” key to jump to the first folder starting with that letter.
If I want to then type another letter “J” or even if I want to type some other
letter, I always have to wait about 3 seconds before it will respond.
Unless of course I press a down/up arrow first and then type the new character.

That seems very silly to me. Of course, I’m an old Windows user and I liked
being able to tap a letter key repeatedly and skipping from one item to the
next with that letter to speed up searching.

So for all the clever terminal command folks out there, is there a way to
significantly shorten the required “dead time” before the Mac will wake up and
respond to another keypress?

And I’m thinking this is a system-wide restriction, because it exhibits the
same behavior in Finder, Dock, and others aside from Mail.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Some Questions Regarding Pages and Voiceover

2022-01-19 Thread Jonathan Cohn
If you are checking the word count often in your document, you can set a hot
spot for the word count.
For example press VO-Shift-5 to set hot spot five.
You can then check the contents of that hotspot with VO-command-5 without
losing your place.
THe VO-command (number) commands will read the hot spot in question and not
move any cursors.
I suppose if you doing this quite often it might be worth while setting a
commander to read the hot spot. Option-W or numpad minus are probably easier
for most people to type than the standard VO key.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Well, it is annoying, but I’ve seen this in Windows as well.

At least I didn’t lose speech this time when the headset was connected.

Re: Help with Combo boxes, radio buttons and pop-up menus in safari.

2022-01-19 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Another option beyond return, or VO-space, is just the space button.
Basically, it’s not really Apple that needs to fix that part of things, it is
the developer. If they develop their site using accessible API’s, then all
screen readers will be able to work well within their environment.

I have also experienced situations where the element did not behave properly in
Safari, but was able to manipulate it within Chrome or Edge. That, again, is a
developer issue.

Later…

RE: Help with Combo boxes, radio buttons and pop-up menus in safari.

2022-01-19 Thread Rebecca Skipper
This may be a problem only the site’s developer can fix.

The Mac and iPhone support third party browsers.

Hi team,

That’s what I thought. Apple should do something with that. I visited the
Classter.com web page. there I had to choose something on the pop-up menus and
combo boxes, and neither VO space nor the return button worked.

Thank you very much for your help. Have a good one!

Hi,

It kind of depends on how the developer coded the web-site. You have multiple
ways that you can address these elements.

Radio Buttons: If the radio buttons are grouped, as in a scale thing, like
“Select 1 through 5 depending on your degree of satisfaction”, then I can tab
to the item, and the first item will be selected. Using right or left arrows
should move through the other possible buttons in that group. Note, coming
from before will land you on, and select the first item, whereas tabbing from
after will land you on and first select the last item. You can also use VO
navigation to move through the radio button choices, then either VO-space or
just space to select the radio button.

Combo Boxes or Pop-up Menus: these are often handled in a similar manner.
Again, it depends on the method that the developer coded these elements, but
basically, try VO-space, then arrow down. If that doesn’t work, press return
on the menu, then arrow. Sometimes, I’ve had to press return to open the combo
box or menu items, then use VO arrows within. You have to use everything in
your toolbox as there doesn’t seem to be a one option fits all when it comes to
web elements.

Re: Recording radio programs on an iPhone

2022-01-19 Thread joseph hodge
I’m not sure of any iPhone app that can work with this maybe screen recorder.
The only way I would know how to do this is to hook it up to like a Mac and use
audio hijack. iOS is pretty restrictive when it comes to recording app content.

Re: A Question About How to Get VoiceOver to Read Notifications on Apple Watch 7

2022-01-19 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi Mark,

I have an Apple Watch 7, although this was similar on my Series 3 if I recall
correctly. I’m currently using the Australian Voice 2. That is, I have it
checked to use my Siri voice in the VoiceOver settings under Accessibility.
If I remember right, it was no different when I was using Samantha or
Australian Voice 1. In the Notification settings, I have the Notification
indicator turned on as well as the Notification Summary.

I did get a text message this morning, and was able to read it on my watch
right away, as I checked it within the first bit where it automatically show
the notification.

Recording radio programs on an iPhone

2022-01-19 Thread Michael Busboom
Hi.

I recently heard a program on local radio that fascinated me. I would like to
record it before it disappears. The local radio stations let you listen to the
program for up to a week before it is removed from their list of offerings.

I am looking for an app that will enable me to record such offerings and listen
to them whenever I would like. While I own two apps that let me record live
radio streams, I don’t have anything that allows me to record audio output that
comes directly from a URL. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

With warm regards from Austria,

Mike

I’d just use any of the AirPods models. Pair with all apple devices with no
effort at all.

Plug and play isn’t working.

Re: Requesting Over the Ear Headset for Mac and IOS

2022-01-19 Thread Kliph
I’d just use any of the AirPods models. Pair with all apple devices with no
effort at all.

RE: Requesting Over the Ear Headset for Mac and IOS

2022-01-19 Thread Rebecca Skipper
Yes, but no sound unless I disconnected the headset and adapter.

I suspect that I need to tell the mac to use the headset for output and the mic
for input but without Voiceover this is impossible.

When you say it didn’t work, what happened? Plug and Play should work with most
headphones. The issue is that in there wisdom, Apple made the Mac and iPhone
hav different connections. What you will have to do if you want the same
headset is get a pair for your mac and then get an lightning to USB adapter for
your iPhone.

Requesting Over the Ear Headset for Mac and IOS

2022-01-19 Thread Rebecca Skipper
Hi,

Can you recommend a over the ear headset with a mic similar to a UAV headset
that will work both with the M1 Mac, iPhone, and iPad?

I would like to have a wired option for zoom and Facetime.

I tried using a USB headset with an adapter on my Mac but it will not work
with Voiceover.

Plug and play isn't working.

Thanks.
