Re: a security / privacy settings question.

2022-06-14 Thread Herbie Allen
In iOS, you cannot download apps from third-party sites, you have no choice but
to use the App store. As a result, every app is vetted by Apple before
submission. The other result is that if someone wants you to run they're
program, they have to submit the app directly to Apple. The Mac however is a
different animal. We can use Safari to download directly and the system is not
directly sandboxed. Take Zoom. To use it on the iPhone, App store, no other
way though it might work through Safari. However, there is no Zoom app on the
Mac App store. There are some things that will work with Zoom, but if you want
the actual program the company provides, you have to go to there website. It’s
a safe app to download, but I don’t know if you restrict your downloads if that
one would work for instance. My point though is that if you only download apps
from people you know, then you don’t have to worry about security measures that
may or may not hamper your Mac experience.

Is not that what is meant by trusted developers though? My understanding
is that limiting downloads can protect you from bugs and viruses.

I know nothing about the IOS store, having no iPhone.

Hi,

OK, no problem. Pretty well the same process. If you wish to delete a
specific message within a conversation, then navigate to the message, press
VO-cmd-space to bring up the Actions menu, then arrow down to “show Menu” and
press VO-space, Now, arrow down to “Delete” and press return. If you wish to
delete the entire conversation, navigate to the conversation in the table,
press VO-cmd-space to bring up the Actions menu, then arrow down to “delete”,
press return, then confirm.

I mean how to delete messages in the Mac.

Hi,

If this is on iPhone or iPad, then navigate to the Message you wish to delete.
When you land on the message you want to delete, swipe up or down until you
hear VO announce, “More”, then double-tap. Now, move your finger to the bottom
of the screen, and you’ll find a “Delete” button in the Toolbar. Double-tap it
and that message will be deleted.

If you mean to delete an entire conversation, or message thread, then swipe up
or down on that conversation until you hear VO announce “Delete”. Double-tap
and confirm and the entire message thread will be deleted.

HTH.

Re: How to delete messages in the app message?

2022-06-14 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries

HTH.

Re: Help, I’m drowning in junk mail

2022-06-14 Thread Doug Lee
This is probably off topic so please pardon my reply, but having dealt once
with a wild fluke that caused over
100,000 junk mails per day for a while, I sympathize. :) No that number is not
a typo.

The answer depends on several things:

First, is there anything consistent about the junk mail--e.g., sender address,
sender domain, subject line or
key words in it? At a deeper level if you are comfortable finding and
inspecting mail headers, you may find
common header elements that are not normally visible in daily mail reading.
These can of course serve in mail
handling rules.

Is the address to which the junk is being sent exactly the same as your normal
address? I ask this because I
am in the habit of giving out variants that still reach me but that let me
filter out spam if one of the
variants starts generating it. As a bonus, this also lets me sometimes identify
who or what is responsible for
the spam. Unlikely for you maybe, but worth asking because filtering by
recipient address can be very
effective for some cases.

If you collect mail from more than one mailbox and find that the spam is coming
from one you don't use, you
could consider dropping that mailbox. I've lost track of how many times I've
seen a ten-year-old mailbox
belonging to a long-time friend suddenly start sending out spam. That doesn't
of course sound like your issue,
but it does indicate how common it may be for people simply to forget about old
mailboxes and not maintain
them. Of course, if this *is* your issue, you would likely have discovered this
when checking for common
elements, my first suggestion.

In my 100,000 per day mail case, I actually wrote a program to clean out my
upstream folder via IMAP just
before I downloaded mail each time. I doubt you have to go that far.

For the curious, here is what happened to me:

In August, 2012, someone started sending literally millions of spam emails but
listing my domain as the origin of the
spam. As is often the case with such mass spam generation, a great many of the
destination addresses were invalid. For
each of these, the various mail daemons, that being programs that process mail
for us, dutifully sent back an error
indicating that the message could not be delivered. Since the messages had been
crafted to consider my domain as the
origin, the daemons sent the error reports to me, to the tune of, as I said,
sometimes over 100,000 error messages a
day. The program I wrote made mail completely manageable anyway, but I suspect
that particular spam attack would have
stopped most routine computer users from keeping up for a while.

Help, I’m drowning in junk mail

2022-06-14 Thread Phil Halton
I don’t know what happened, but in the last week or so I’m deluge by a tsunami
of junk mail. All I know to do is to move these messages to the junk mail
folder and hopes that Apple mail will see it as junk and maybe start cutting
down the volume of it. What can a person do when they’re overwhelmed by junk
mail?

Zoom Meeting

2022-06-14 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries
Zoom is installed on my devices but I have not used it so far. I
will in a couple weeks so am looking for tips. Likely will use the Mac.
Is there a test mode where I can check it out and become familiar with
it? Thanks.
