Formatting problem in Pages and Text Edit + Sharing with MS Word users.

2011-07-09 Thread Joshua Loya
Hello Folks,

I currently write a monthly column for my mother's web site, and I have
unrelated projects I'll be submitting for publication in the very near future..
I'm using a Mac, and my mother is using a PC with Jaws. When I send her Word
documents that I have created with Pages, many of the words get split between
two lines. For instance, the word depression, is split between 'dep' and
ression' on two separate lines. I also have similar issues with other word
processing documents, n Pages and Text Edit, which I have written for my own
use. The only writing software I don't have any trouble with is Mac Journal,
Story Mill, and Mars Edit. I would really appreciate any advice you can
provide. I originally got my Mac for use with audio production software like
Pro Tools, but I would also like to use it for all of my writing, regardless of
the platforms the people I am collaborating with are using.

Thanks much,
Joshua

Audio tutorials and demos for Mac/iOS was Re: Accessible MIDI Sequencing

2011-07-09 Thread Joshua Loya
Thanks for sharing this. It's very helpful.

I know there are email lists, but is there a repository of audio tutorials and
demos for the Mac? It would be great if there was a clearinghouse for all
Mac/iOS software and hardware. I don't know of anything besides
www.icanworkthisthing.com, www.maccessibility.net, and www.applevis.com.

THanks much,

Why is that? That's because Amazon knows you purchased it, so it makes
the music available. It doesn't make a physical copy and put it in
 your Cloud.
This is the same concept with iTunes.
The 5GB storage is for your documents, photos, bookmarks, contacts,

in your 5GB storage and not for streaming.
iTunes keeps a record of your purchases so when you connect to a
registered device, it downloads all your content.

Music Notation software

2010-11-13 Thread Joshua Loya
Hello my fellow Mac loving musicians,
What options, if any, are there for music notation software on the Mac? I know
a lot of sighted people who use Finale, but I haven't messed with it, and I
haven't touched music notation since I lost my sight, with the exception of a
very basic primer in braille music. I know that Dancing Dots has some solutions
on the Windows side, but I would really prefer to keep things Mac centric
around here.

Thanks,
Joshua

Mac Journal

2010-11-12 Thread Joshua Loya
Hello all,
Some time ago, I sent a cross posted message stating that I was having
difficulty syncing data between Mac Journal on my iPhone and Mac Journal on my
Macbook Pro. I was never able to resolve the issue. I was never able to resolve
the issue, that is, until I purchased and registered Mac Journal on my Mac.
Apparently, while it isn't mentioned in the documentation, syncing journals
over a wireless network will not work if the Mac running Mac Journal is only
running a trial version. Once I registered the Mac OS version, syncing worked
smashingly.
Btw, Mac Journal for iPhone, last time I checked, was $4.99. It will only sync
text entries, but it is quite accessible.

Re: Some Apple Mail Questions using voiceover

2010-11-10 Thread Joshua Loya
Yes, they will, but they will not appear in your in box, as long as you check
the skip in box check box when you create your filter. It is important to
remember that your all mail folder is not the same as your in box. GMail works
quite a bit differently than the way most people are used to mail services
working. Also, it is important to mention that everything I am saying is only
relevant if you are using imap, which is the only way I access all of my mail
accounts, unless I am logging into them directly via a web mail interface, or
SAMNet, in the case of my System Access account.

 Hi everyone,

Today I noticed my top level Gmail mailbox was collapsed. When I
expanded it I found over 6,000 messages in my All Mail folder. Of
course, the very same messages had already been in my Inbox or my
Macvisionaries mail box and had already been read and deleted.

Is there a way to delete all of them in one fell swoop. When I switched
to thread mode, there are still over 1,000. I checked the menus and
elsewhere but found nothing to empty a specific mailbox?

Also, is it possible to just prevent messages going to 2 mailboxes at the
same time or delete this All Mail mailbox or is that not advisable?

As always, thanks for your information and advice.

iTunes question: changing songs to be sorted by track number when viewing an album

When I am using the column browser, and I narrow the tracks displayed to a

I tend to agree with Scott. An iPad, with a Bluetooth keyboard is much less

An iPad may mostly be a media consumption device for our sighted counterparts,

up a network properly, you can view what is available on your network by
pressing cmd-shift-k from within any Finder window. You may want to do this for
some of the music on your iPhone
, if the only location you have it backed up is on an internal drive in another
computer. Alternatively, connect your external drive to your MB Pro.

2. I navigated to the files I wanted to copy to the iTunes library on my Mac.

3. I selected them, and pressed cmd-c to copy the files to my clipboard.

4. In iTunes, I navigated to my music table, but did not interact with it.

5. I pressed cmd-v to paste the files I had copied to my clipboard.

Because I had not changed the default in iTunes of copying new files to the
iTunes music folder when importing new tracks, the tracked were simultaneously
imported into my iTunes library and copied to my MB Pro. Of course, there may
be a simpler way to do this if you have home sharing turned on, but I haven't
messed with that, and that wasn't an option for me, as I had needed to reformat
my main hard drive. Fortunately, my iTunes library was on a secondary internal
hard drive which was not affected by what ever went bad with that particular
machine.

Mars Edit 3

I just installed a demo of Mars Edit 3, and I'm having some real trouble with

I was able to set up Mars Edit to work with my self hosted Word Press blog. I
can't edit any previous posts or pages, and I cannot edit any local drafts that
I started writing with Mars Edit. If for some reason Mars Edit 3 is not
accessible, I would appreciate knowing what other folks are using for blogging
clients these days.

Ok. So the label shows up in the mailboxes list. That's great. We're half way

same messages which appear in the Mac Visionaries label/mailbox do not appear
in the GMail in box in Apple Mail?

Success! I misunderstood the meaning of the skip in box check box. I thought
that it still wasn't working, even after I had checked this, because I forgot
to apply the filter to existing conversations. Carolyn, it's possible that
neglecting to do that may have been part of the trouble you had with Google.

Thanks a bunch,

Make your own custom iPhone Ringtone for free

2010-10-30 Thread Joshua Loya
I wanted to make myself some ring tones from songs that I had already purchased
or ripped, so I did a little research. This is what I found, and it worked
perfectly. I hope the rest of you will find it as helpful as I did. Feel free
to ask any questions if you get confused.

10 Easy Steps to Make your own Custom iPhone Ringtone for Free

The iPhone, iPhone accessories, and iPhone ringtones are all the rage right
now, so why not make your own iPhone ringtone? With a Mac or Windows PC it’s
pretty straightforward using iTunes, follow these 10 steps and you can easily
create your own iPhone Ringtone from whatever song you want. Note that songs
with DRM will not usually work, meaning things purchased from the iTunes Music
Store will probably not be able to turn into ringtones if they have DRM
protection.

1: Launch iTunes

2: Find the song that you want to use for your iPhone ringtone, make note of
the start and stop times of what you want to be the actual ringtone (the
chorus, or whatever).

3: Control-click (Mac) or Right-click (Windows) the song you chose and select
‘Get Info’

4: Click the ‘Options’ tab and set the start and stop time of your ringtone in
the settings below. Keep the selection at 30 seconds or less. Click ‘OK’ –
Note: I suggest making a backup copy of the song so you don’t accidentally
shorten the song itself.

5: Control-click (Mac) or Right-click (Windows) the song again and select
‘Convert Selection to AAC’ and iTunes will convert the song as another copy in
the AAC format.

6: Now Control-Click or Right-click the ringtone and select ‘Delete’ making
sure to click on the “Keep Files” button

7: Locate the file you just created. Typically located in your home directory
under Music iTunes iTunes Music and then under the band’s name, the file
you’re looking for will have an m4a extension

8: Now replace the ‘m4a’ extension of the ringtone file with “m4r” , so if the
file is named MrRoboto.m4a the new file will be called MrRoboto.m4r – you’ll
get a warning about changing the file extension time but click “OK”

9: Double click to open the ringtone file you just renamed. iTunes will
automatically add this new ringtone to the Ringtones folder within the
application

10: Finally, connect your iPhone and sync your new ringtone! You can then
select it as any other iPhone ringtone via your iPhone settings.

This method will work in iTunes under Windows or Mac OS X!

Update: If you have upgraded to iTunes 9.1 or later and you are having
problems, you will need to make some changes to the preferences in order to
convert songs to m4a ringtone format in iTunes 9.1. Other than the import
settings adjustment to iTunes Preferences, the process is practically
identical. You will still need to create an .m4a file then rename the extension
to .m4r for iTunes to recognize it as a ringtone.

It wasn't easy. Towards the end of the process, wen I thought everything had

VO continually crashing on application support page

2010-10-27 Thread Joshua Loya
Hello,
I went to
http://www.apple.com/accessibility
I then clicked on application support, in order to look at the list of VO
compatible applicaitons. As soon as that page loads, VO keeps crashing, and I
have to quit Safari from the dock. Is anyone else having this problem? Any
solutions?

Thanks,

Bible Software

2010-10-27 Thread Joshua Loya
Hi,
Can anyone recommend some good Mac Bible software? I am aware that Mac Sword is
supposed to work fairly well, but I would like to find software that includes
the NIV, and it does not appear that there are any plans for an NIV module to
be developed for Mac Sword. I found some information on Logos, but I could not
find a demo anywhere. Also, I installed a demo of Accordance, but it looks as if
it has a long way to go regarding accessibility.

Thanks,
Joshua

Thanks. That worked smashingly. The link you gave didn't work, but I was able
to find the correct site by googling old Mac aps. I followed your instructions,
and even after the update, Skype is working beautifully. Now, if I can only
figure out how to make a test call...

First, Uninstall Skype completely. Move the Skype application to the trash,
delete the Skype folder from your /home/library and the relevant Skype entry
 from the prefferences.
Then install that earlier version and logon to Skype. hen update from there.

Re: MP3 Books on the iPod Touch and iTunes

2010-10-27 Thread Joshua Loya
It doesn't have anything to do with the new version of iTunes. Make sure that
you have correctly edited the tag information of the files. Sometimes it can be

checking the tag information is your best bet.

Re: Bible Software

2010-10-27 Thread Joshua Loya
Last time I checked, Mac Sword only has Protestant Canon books, but the web
site mentioned that they are working on adding books from other Canon, such as
those used by Roman Catholics. The web site stated that this shortcoming has
nothing to do with theology. It is more of a programming issue.

First, Uninstall Skype completely. Move the Skype application to the trash,
delete the Skype folder from your /home/library and the relevant Skype
 entry from the prefferences.
Then install that earlier version and logon to Skype. hen update from
 there.

What am I doing wrong here? Does it have something to do with the new

Macs and Rehab agenciesRe: Microsoft Office 2011 period

Hello all,
