Re: Recommendations for noise canceling headphones
Phil, The model I have is the quiet comfort 20 which is currently available from Amazon for 249 dollars with free shipping for prime members. As I said, they are pricey but worth it in my opinion. Re: Travel bluetooth keyboard recommendations?
The Amazon basics Bluetooth keyboard is fantastic. It is slim and light but has full-size keys and is very easily transported in a backpack. Basically, what it does is, it goes through your ITunes library and finds all audio books, be it Audible, or purchased directly from ITunes. It then gives you a table, which by the way, you can do a keyword search if you have a lot, you select your books, hit convert, and presto! This thing supports Flac, Wave, mp3, M4A, and I think maybe 1 or two others for the output formats. It's gorgeous! I've been converting all my books to losless flac, so that I could then play them through my Sonos wireless speaker set, as those things support Flac. Trust me. It is beautiful! So, the name of the app is Tunekit Audio Book Converter. You can learn more about it from http://www.tunekit.com They also have an M4V converter, but I've not tried it. The book converter does have a trial. It lets you convert the first 3 minutes of any book of your hcoice. After that, you have to register. It's very very very worth it though. Their download page is at: http://www.tunekit.com/download and the direct link to the Book Converter DMG is: http://www.tuneskit.com/download/AudiobookConvertforMac.dmg They have a Windows version, but I have no clue of its accessibility, so buyer, beware. Re: VMWare questions
I did choose the move option, because I read where that was a good idea. I still get no start up music and those notifications that I can’t read under Fusion 6, Windows 7, and Mavericks. Maybe I’ll get my sighted hubby to take a look at it and see if anything crazy is going on. On Dec 6, 2013, at 7:46 PM, Phil Halton philh...@gmail.com wrote: unity view won't affect anything. Not knowing what to do, I selected copy. This caused all my keys to be invalidated - windows, MS-office and jaws all had to be re-authorized. I think if I had chosen move, then fusion would have moved the authorizations along with the vm file, de-activating the old one and activating the new, but as it was, I basically created a clone of the VM, so now I have to windows for the price of one. P.S. I had to call windows support (accessibility team) for help and they authorized the new windows7 VM even though I didn't pay for another license . I don't think that answers your question though. Sorry I can't be more help The first thing you need to do I think is to get jaws talking so you can know whats going on. Try narrator while you're at it. and, if fusion asks if this is a new file, and you want to copy or move it, try the move option. In there, there is a check box which tells the vm to ignore all mac osx commands. For myself, once I checked that little box, the guest operating system acted better! Re: MacBook Air upgrade options
Hello all: I have been running Windows 7 in Fusion along side OSX with 8 gigs of ram on a 2009 MBP, and it runs very well, even with several apps open in windows and OSX. The ram is certainly the main issue here, but I'm sure all the processor speed you can afford will have added benefits. I'm in the market for an MBA soon too, so good luck with your purchase. The SSD will certainly speed things up as well. On Jul 14, 2013, at 1:45 PM, Harry Hogue harryhog...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Phil, I have only ever worked with a MacBook Pro running 4gb of ram and with a 320 hard drive (not an SSD). From my experience, the virtual machine setup with usable for tiems when you only want to run Windows for a few minutes, in somewhat limited situations. What I have found, however, is that after setting up Boot Camp on my computer, I see no difference in performance whatsoever. I have been running my system under Windows exclusively over the past week or so for school-related things that I need Microsoft Word for, and it is though I were running on a PC. I always found Fusion with Windows and JAWS, or any other screen-reader, to be very sluggish, especially if I had other programs running in the background, no matter how much I increased available memory to the VM through Fusion settings. Now, this is only my opinion and thoughts, of course. It very well may be that for most people this set up works perfectly fine. Indeed, I made it work for me for around a year or so. However, for day-to-day reliable performance, I found I needed Windows under Boot Camp, and again, thank you to all on this list who helped me to achieve that. Your patience was and is very kind and appreciated. I considered upgrading my RAM, etc. and certainly increased RAM may help, but I'm not certain how much. I know that VoiceOver likes to say Busy, busy, busy in programs sometimes, and I remember that I have had the same issues with that as someone who had 2 gb of ram. But ram is always supposed to be the biggest factor in immediate increased performance. I use VMware Fusion and have Windows 7 in a virtual machine that I use from time to time, so I'd have to upgrade there and maybe reinstall Windows 7 Jaws, and the whole shabang. Doesn't sound like much fun, so I've just been putting it off. :) Who knows, maybe I'll have extra time during this long, cold winter, and just do it and get it over with. I'm liking what I'm hearing about ML so far. I think the best thing is that the safari busy messages are totally gone and you no longer have to turn voiceover off and back on again to get around this. Personally I think that Apple should provide this fix for earlier operating systems as well since that's a bug, not a feature. Also it does seem to be a bit faster than lion, well worth the update I think. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Macbook Pro keeps dropping wifi connection
Hi folks: All of a sudden, today, my MBP, late 2009 model, still running SL, keeps dropping its wifi connection. When I check it in the system menu, VO M twice quickly, it says it is still connected to my home network, but Safari or Webkit just sits there. I turn airport off and then back on and it will work again for a few minutes, and then lose connection again. I got AT Uverse a couple of months ago, but it has worked great until today. Other windows machines on the network seem to be keeping their connections just fine. I told my computer to forget the network and reestablished it, but still the same story. This is hugely frustrating. I'll appreciate any ideas. Thanks! Kim -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: Macbook Pro keeps dropping wifi connection
I removed all remembered networks. I recycled the modem and router. We'll see what happens. It seems like I can switch about f5 or 6 web pages, and then it just drops out. It still shows as connected in the airport menu and in system prefs, but no internet. Let's pray it stays connected since I did the reboot of the router and modem. Someone had also set a speaker right next to the router, which had not been there before. I moved that too. I hope there's nothing wrong with the wifi device in my MBP. I know things can interfere with the signal, but nothing has really changed around here, except for that speaker that I just moved. Navigate this screen with vo+right arrow, until you find the checkbox to enable the developer menu in the menu bar. This might sound really weird, but trust me with this. It does work, I promise. If this box isn't checked go ahead and do so with vo+space. 5. Now close your preferences with command+W. 6. Now, hit command+L to get to the address bar, and type in http://m.facebook.com Beware, there is *no* www at the beginning of this URL. 6. Once here, we need to configure one thing to get this to work optymally. Go to your menu bar with vo+m. Once here navigate over to your developer menu. 7. Once in the developer menu, locate the User Agent sub menu, and expand it. 8. Inside User agent, hit the letter F, as in foxtrot. This should land you on Firefox 4.0. I know again this sounds really cock eyed, but trust me, I swear it works. 9. Select Firefox 4.0. This should force the web site to reload. Once done, have a look. You'll now find it looks totally totally accessible like it did on the Windows side of things. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a way to get that to stick. In other words, each time you load the site, you're going to have to go to the developer menu, user agent, Firefox 4.0 after loading up the web site. Remember, you do this after, not before, the web page is loaded. I hope this helps. If you want to see the resource I found this from, go to http://www.applevis.com and do a search for Facebook. HTH. Re: blindmicemegamall movie vault and illegal file-sharing allegation
Christine, I agree with you completely. There is a screenreader company who also provides access to described content as part of their network. I wonder if these offerings were gotten completely on the up and up? I use the vault myself for my own entertainment and nothing more. I'm not trying to sell it or redistribute it in any way. Every time I enjoy a described show with one of those awesome British accents narrating, I say thank God for the folks across the pond who believe visually impaired folks have as much right to described content as they can make available. I, too, would happily purchase content were it available, but since it is not, I will continue to utilize this described material as long as it remains an option. I hear the federal incarceration facilities are kind of nice ,just in case they decide to lock us all up. We may be needing a good attorney. *smiles* On Apr 28, 2012, at 8:36 AM, Christine Grassman wrote: With all due respect, Scott, laws which disparately impact certain groups or classes of people have been flouted through civil disobedience since the introduction of legal systems, e.g., civil rights, disability rights, employment rights, etc. The United States might not exist were it not for disobeying laws. I am an attorney, and it continues to amaze me how slowly the U.S. is moving to accommodate disability, and how snail-paced the societal shift in attitudes toward us has been. and it seems that whenever a company like Apple makes great strides in accommodating blindness off the shelf, plenty of other technologies come along and do not bother to incorporate us into their equation. So many educational apps, for example, are not accessible, though they could be, and given the push now to have iPads in classrooms, once again blind, visually impaired, and otherwise print-disabled students will be left out. Apple moves us two steps forward, and progress (for others) moves us three steps back. I should be able to turn on a television, flip a switch, or turn on a transmitter, and get descriptions. I should be able to access books on the Nook or the Kindle, not just iBooks. I cannot express, and I am sure others here agree, the happiness I feel when a new release or best-selling publication is available on iBooks. (Incidentally, if a book is available on iBooks and on bookshare.org, I purchase the book. Yet, I have lost quite a lot of money as a published author -- as soon as my book was published, I sent a copy to bookshare.org; it was more important to me to have it available at the same time to the blind and print-disabled. The Authors Guild apparently does not care about such access, despite the fact that they would actually get money from us.) I would happily go to the movies more and happily purchase audio-described movies through iTunes if they were available. Even movies which are released with audio description are not always sold through movie resellers -- goodness knows I have tried. To date, I have only located The Incredible Hulk, from 2008, which I purchased for my son. Even Apple could do more. It could strengthen its requirements for apps. It has provided developers with the means to make their apps VoiceOver accessible, and there are plenty of apps out there which could be so. Only apps that are visual by their very nature should be exempted. But, as usual, profit trumps people, despite the fact that the disabled community rewards those who remember us with our business. Frankly, I would prefer to purchase the audio-described movies and shows I download from the vault, so that I could watch them with sighted friends and family. I wish I could show a film to a class and not have to ask my para or a student to tell me what is going on. The entertainment industry gets plenty of my money. If they want more, they should remember that I deserve to be able to access their material independently. OK. Topic over. Re: Another Annoying issue in mail.
Ricardo, I did use the classic view, and it was still clunky. I haven't had one busy in mail since I went back to Snow Leopard. My whole system was just clunky under Lion, and maybe it's because I just ran the update and didn't install it fresh and then import my stuff, I don't know. I run Windows 7 in a virtual machine under Fusion. Don't know if that made it more clunky. I'm quite sure I know why these statuses aren't being read by VO however. Every time you cursor down the list of messages, The adjacent window containing the selected message is opened, thus the status changes to 'read' and AFAIK, there is no symbol present for VO to speak once it is read. I forgot how to keep the message from being opened even in classic view so I went back to the newer presentation and if I really want to see the statuses, I just turn VO tracking off and then look down the list of messages with VO-arrow keys and this way, the messages don't get selected nor opened. All I need now would be a single hot key to bring the application cursor down to where the VO cursor is. We have a command to go the other way but not this way. Re: Another Annoying issue in mail.
I updated to Lion a few weeks ago. Mail was awful under Lion, which is why I was not terribly upset this weekend when my Macbook Pro crashed completely for the first time ever in the 27 months I've owned it. I had to erase and reinstall from the Snow Leopard disk that came with the Macbook, and I hadn't run a Time Machine backup since before I installed Lion, so I just restored that backup. Re: issue with google chrome
I'm having tons of issues with Safari as well, and the last three weeks sounds about right. I haven't updated to Lion yet either. Seems like several sites I visit tend to stall out just about the time I get to the information I need. The HTML will close and I'll be dumped into the bookmarks bar. I interact with the HTML again, and same thing when I get to a certain point on the page. I'm going to Windows more and more for web surfing, and I don't like to have to do that, but IE is working better than Safari or WebKit at this point. I have done all the usual system corrections (scanning permissions and even the repair disk function). so far, no dice. please don't ask me to upgrade to lion as I don't have the money nor the supported hardware. I already tried and the installer barfed while starting up. even when I got visual help here to see what the problem was they told me it was not possible to install lion on my system as the cpu was considered too old. When I type something in an edit box, apparently it is going into the box, but VoiceOver does not read it back to me. I can't use tab navigation the way I do in Safari. In Chrome Preferences, I can get past the first tab, which is Basic. In my opinion, Chrome is somewhat accessible, but it's not ready to replace Safari. I wish there is something that can replace Safari. At this point, I'm ready to go back to Windows and using Firefox with Jaws or Window-Eyes. At least it's not going to say Safari busy. A Mac has different commanders as they are referred to, these are ways of inputting commands or actions to Voice Over to make a desired thing happen, be it navigation or more. you can use your keyboard, with the Voice Over keys, control and options, with a range of additional keys to activate various commands. You can use the number pad if your keyboard has one to also do the same, if you have a track pad you can use that to gesture like you can on an iPHone, iPod Touch or iPad. but the big one for me that is often overlooked is Quick Nav, quick nav uses the four arrow keys to enable you to quickly navigate around everything from finder Windows, to apps, to text edit areas to the internet etc. firstly you need to know that in certain cases you have to turn quick nav off and indeed back on again. you enable / disable quick nav using the left and right arrow keys pressed once at the same time. quite literally left and right arrow keys press once together. you'll hear Voice Over say, Quick Nav on or off. once its on, you can use individual presses of the right / left arrow to move the Voice Over cursor from item to item on the screen... inserted little note here, you need to also understand that whilst PC's screen readers use up and down arrows to move you about, the Mac uses left / right, and thinking about this, it does make sense, as this is how sighted folk read. so the left / right keys will move item by item, be it a chunk of text on the internet, or icons on a desktop etc. the up / down arrow keys again individually pressed will cycle through the elements of the item that you are interacting with based on the rotor setting, the rotor is a dial or rotory styled switch which adjusts the method of moving through elements in a given thing. let me explain, a web-site is made up of headings, links, visited links, fields, form fields, tables etc. so when you're in Safari the rotor may have, and you can customise this, headings, tables, links, words and characters within the rotor. if you want to quickly move between the headings on a web page you should make sure that the rotor is set to headings, you cchange the roter setting by pressing together the up and left arrow keys, or the up and right arrow keys. once you're on heading, use the up / down arrow key indivually to jump between headings since this is what your roter is now set to. say you find the heading you are looking for, you can now right arrow through the content, imagine though you find a word that Voice Over doesn't quite read right, and you think, what did it say? change the roter to word, using the up and right or up and left arrows together, now down press until yu are one word ahead of the word you wish to have spelt, now change the roter to charicter, press down arrow and the cursor will move charicter by charicter. once done simply change the roter bakc to heading or whatever you wish. this is just one example of how the roter works. another amazing thing which gets little press is the Item Chooser, which by pressing control, options, I, will bring up a list of every single item on any page you are on, be it a finder window or safari window etc. this has to be one of my favourite features of Voice Over. with this snazy feature you now have a list of every componant on the screen, say you are on Amazon, and you've got an item up in front of you, you want to find the add to basket button, but can't. press control, options, I, and then type basket, or b, a, s and leave it at that... the list of items reduces

Actually, I didn't think it took terribly long to process, but I just don't know if I want to drop $299 on it right now. I just wish there was another solution on the Mac that didn't require using to applications to get a scanned document, as is the case with needing to use Vuscan and then ABBYY Fine Reader. Isn't ABBYY Fine Reader $99? I wasn't successful getting it to work during the trial period, but I kind of put it asside and forgot about it. Now, I'm loathe to put down $99 for it, and then find out I still can't get it to work. My desktop PC I was using to scan with an old Dell all-in-one and ABBYY Fine Reader version 5 has just died, and I don't have a scanning solution at all at the moment. However, I also downloaded a trial version of Abby Fine Reader, and I actually wound up purchasing it within the first couple of days. I am very impressed with the recognition, and it works very well with my scanner and scanner software. My only complaint at all about this program, is simply the fact I have to launch the scanner software separately to begin the scanning process, and that Abby asks you to save the file before reviewing it. Re: abby fine reader express question
Honestly Jenny, I don't really remember what my issue was with ABBYY Fine Reader. I was under the impression you needed to scan with Vuscan, and then open the file in ABBYY Fine Reader to do the OCR on it. Is this correct? On May 20, 2011, at 9:07 PM, Jenny Wood wrote: Yes, Abby Fine Reader is $99. Hmmm, what type of problem were you having with it? I am assuming you already have the correct driver and software installed for your scanner? Unfortunately, other than Docuscan, I don't know of any such program just yet. Our car stereo has a USB port. I transfer music to a thumb drive, plug it into the stereo, and I have 16 gigs of music blasting away. Hello: I would guess that you have already chosen the app from the app store. Check in your applications folder by going to the finder and using the key combination of command/shift/A and then look for Docuscan Plus. hth On May 7, 2011, at 12:49 PM, Melanie Clouser wrote: Hello: I can't seem to download DocuScan Plus to my Mac. Re: For those who can actually afford this, DocuScan Plus is now on the mac app store.
David, were your Cannon scanner drivers inaccessible with VO? I couldn't make heads or tails out of them with VO myself, but they have to be running to use the scanner. I have scanned stuff with Vuscan, which I already bought. I use Vuscan for things that do not need OCR. I'm considering Docuscan Plus. I can't get Fine Reader Express to work for some reason. I get some dialog stating that the Safari version is not compatible or something like that. Ugh! On Apr 30, 2011, at 2:39 AM, David Tanner wrote: The Canon Lide 210 can be used with the Mac. Re: For those who can actually afford this, DocuScan Plus is now on the mac app store.
I really want to be able to scan and do OCR on my Mac though. Maybe Fine Reader Express is the answer? I don't know. :) On Apr 29, 2011, at 9:05 PM, Mary Otten wrote: Hi Kimberly. I know this is probably not a popular recommendation for this list, but given that the cost of an upgrade to K1000 to the most current version is, I believe $125, and given that you have a scanner and a machine to run the program on, that would be the cheapest and best solution from the point of view of the utility of the product. Just a thought. You are already familiar with the program. The ocr is improved over the version you have, and you don't have to mess with the cloud or mulliple programs and the hassle that entails. My problem is a little different, in that I don't own a Windows 7 machine and am not interested in messing with Windows 7 and continuing to pay for screen reader upgrades. So I'm hoping that something like docuscan will improve over time to allow local scanning and ocr at least, and possibly to allow for user control of settings as in K1000 or other full featured scanning programs for the general population on the Windows platform. Re: First-time download of bookshare book on Mac: how to unzip
Hi: You need a program called the Unarchiver. I'm sure if you do a Google search, you'll come up with it. It's free and works great! :) Once you have this program, you can VO/shift/M on the zipped folder, arrow to open with, enter and the Unarchiver will be one of your choices. Enter on that, and you folder will be unzipped as soon as you enter your password when prompted. hth On Apr 25, 2011, at 3:43 PM, Christine Grassman wrote: Hello, all.
