Formatting of documents with Fine Reader Express
-- Lindsay Lindsay Yazzolino Researcher Massachusetts Institute of Technology Phone: (425) 417-9239 lindsay3...@gmail.com Hi All, I am using ABBYY Fine Reader Express to convert a number of PDF documents to text files, which I will be reading with my Mac as well as my work PC. I am finding, however, that the RTF files I scan end up containing objects, such as text columns, which Windows screen readers do not always seem to handle smoothly. Is there a way to set Fine Reader to convert to a different formatting, or would I be better off figuring out how to read through these text columns with JAWS? I've found that JAWS tends to skip over entire sections of text, presumably those which are in a different column within the section where my cursor is focused. Also, does anyone know why Fine Reader shows duplicate buttons in the screen which asks the user to specify the destination file type? Thanks in advance! capslock vs. insert in laptop layout
Hi, I have been using VMWare Fusion with JAWS in laptop layout successfully for quite some time now, but am currently running into a slight problem. I have remapped my right command key to insert, and within JAWS settings configured insert to serve as my JAWS key. The problem I'm encountering is that the capslock and insert keys do not always behave the same way. For instance insert+F9 and capsllock F9 does not perform the same function. Will I need to establish another key mapping for capslock, or has anyone found another, better solution? Re: Fusion 5.
Where can one find this version on the site? After much digging I was able to find 5.0, but for some reason VMWare was still trying to charge me $49.99, the same price it showed for upgrading to Professional. Is there some trick to receiving the 50% cheaper price? Is it cheaper to upgrade as opposed to buying a new version from scratch? If so, perhaps I was on the wrong page, or needed to enter my license code somewhere so that I'd receive the upgrade price. I'm currently running version 4. I've found the site to be quite a nightmare in terms of finding the information I need, and any tips would be appreciated. Thanks, everyone. I am certainly familiar with enabling/disabling shortcuts for spotlight and other applications. I just wanted to do my best to ensure that, while selecting shortcuts for changing text inputs, I wouldn't inadvertently choose key combinations which would interfere with other preexisting keystrokes. Re: Shortcuts for text input
Hi Andrew, Thanks for the suggestion. This worked well I ended up reversing your shortcut setup, using cmd+space for spotlight and control+space for switching inputs. ALso I'd neglected to spot the warning message which appears when one creates a shortcut which conflicts with another. If I'd noticed this earlier, I could have avoided asking my original question in the first place. Thanks! MBA keeps locking up/VoiceOVer static
Hi Everybody, I am using one of the newest generation models of the MacBook Air, and have been encountering a rather worrisome problem. The Air has begun to constantly overheat and lock up, necessitating a system restart each time. THis has been happening even when I have been running only one or two applications, such as Safari, and the Air is almost brand-new. Has anyone here experienced such issues, and know of any potential solutions. i'm thinking this may warrant a trip to the Apple Store, but thought I'd ask in the meantime. THanks in advance! Syncing Google contacts
Hi All, I just set up an MS Exchange account on my iPhone 4 running iOS 5, with the intent to sync my Google contacts with those on my iPHone. I enabled both calendar and contacts in my account settings, yet when I checked my Exchange contacts group, I noticed that only some of my contacts had appeared to sync. I checked this again after restarting my phone and nothing changed. Is there a reason why some of my contacts might sync, but not others. Is it possible that some of my contacts may be flagged differently within Google itself, preventing them from being synced? In particular, some of my newer contacts do not appear to have made it to my iPHone. My iphone is set up with iCloud, and I also have two Macs, both of which are set up to sync with iCloud and Google. I know that syncing configurations can be a bit complicated to explain, so please feel free to ask for clarification. Thanks in advance for any suggestions! Jumping to pages in Preview
Hi Everyone, I am in the process of reading some multi-paged documents in Preview, and can't seem to figure out how to quickly jump to a specific page. I have tried the go to page command (command option g), and though VoicOver announces that it has successfully jumped to the correct page, it subsequently proceeds to jump to the top of the document once I interact with text? Using page down seems to help somewhat, though it seems to scroll down only in small increments rather than corresponding to the actual pages of the document. Am I missing something fundamental here? Mac OSX shortcuts interfering with VMWare
Hi Everyone, I am posting this question as a follow-up to a previous post from some time ago which I had neglected. Since upgrading to Lion, I have experienced some difficulty with executing commands within VMWare Fusion which utilize the control key. I subsequently realized that such a problem might have resulted from launchpad and mission control default keyboard shortcuts interfering with JAWS commands, so went about disabling such shortcuts individually in system preferences. While this has for the most part resolved the JAWS keystroke issues within VMWare, I've still found a few JAWS keystrokes here and there not to work properly, all of which require the control key. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced similar problems, and whether there is a more streamlined solution than disabling MAC OSX keystrokes here and there individually? Thanks in advance! Mac not recognizing VR Stream

Screwy VMWare key mapping
Hello, I'm sorry if this question has been asked time and time again on this list, but I'm trying to figure out the best way to map certain Windows keys on my Macbook using VMWare Fusion with SharpKeys. In particular, what mappings have people figured out for some of the higher F-keys, which appear to be overridden by the volume/mute commands for OSX? Also, is it necessary to hold down the function key whenever one needs to activate the F-keys, or has anyone here found solutions? Thanks in advance! Re: Screwy VMWare key mapping
Hi Geoff, Thanks for the pointer--yes, I did try this, but still key combinations such as insert F12 seem to freeze JAWS rather than execute the correct command, in this case speaking the time. I forgot to mention in my previous post that most of the F keys, specifically those toward the left of the keyboard, seem to work fine. Python
Hi Everyone, I am relatively inexperienced when it comes to programming, and am wondering if any of you have had luck programming with Python on the Mac. I believe that the Terminal allows for built-in functionality, yet I have also heard that it cannot handle certain scripting which I will need to do for work. I downloaded the Python IDLE for Mac, but it does not appear to be accessible with VoiceOver. Does Windows or another OS work any better? Please let me know if you have any suggestions. THanks. Numbers frustrating the heck out of me
HI, I am working in a cognitive neuroscience lab and need to make extensive use of spreadsheets. I'm trying to use iWork 8 to open an Excel spreadsheet in Numbers, but I can't get the darn thing to read it properly. When I interact with the scroll area, I see three items--two images and an item labeled unknown--not exactly helpful. Is it worth trying to mess with the Mac, or would I be best off just using JAWS and MS Office? Minimal support is not going to cut it, so if this is all that VoiceOverhas to offer at this point, I'd rather not waste energy trying to make it work. Also, for those of you who are power users of JAWS, do you find that JAWS and VMWare work well enough, or would you suggest that I use Bootcamp? I currently have FUsion installed, but before I go to great lengths to remap the keys to work with JAWS, I want to be sure that doing so is worth my time. Thanks very much in advance. Issue with JAWS and VMWare

After a few months' hiatus from WIndows, I recently tried to use it again only to discover that JAWS had defaulted to 40-minute mode. Refreshing the current screen
Hi, Is there a command for refreshing the screen for a web page? I know that command R refreshes the page, but there exists another JAWS command (alt escape) which refreshes the current screen. Braille displays
Hi, I am using my Mac with a Braille display, and am quite impressed by its ability to instantly recognize my BrailleConnect without any configuration on my part. I would, however, very much like to know if it is possible to make VoiceOver shut up when I want to read with Braille only. When I read text in TextEdit, VoiceOver will often speak the word under the cursor when I pan the display, and I'm finding this rather annoying. Do I need to mute speech, or is there a way for the active cursor not to follow the display as is the case with JAWS? If I do need to mute speech, does there exist a shortcut key that I can use to quickly toggle speech on and off, so that I don't find myself stranded without speech and no Braille display which I can use to get to the VoiceOver utility?
