Re: My issues with Braille Touch
Hi, I totally agree with this, maybe an upward flick would be logical, but definitely something is necessary for editing purposes in the app. I have to copy to the clipboard and paste in to notes or another app and edit from there right now which isn't very efficient. But it's still early days for the app, and it's already great and can only get better. Tammy -Original Message- From: Kawal Gucukoglu Sent: Friday, February 01, 2013 10:52 AM To: viph...@googlegroups.com ; macvisionaries Subject: My issues with Braille Touch Hello. Last night or in the early hours this morning, I went into settings, Braille Touch, feedback and changed the advance settings and speech feedback. So when I opened Braille Touch, everything was as I wanted it to be, but, (there is always a but] once I've typed a phrase or line, I can't get Voice Over to read back the whole line as it is with a traditional screen reader. I know that Braille Touch is not a screen reader but, I would like if possible for Voice Over to be able to read back a line or phrase if we use a gesture that gesture, I don't know to be. I have a friend who is not on any list as I bought her an I pod Touch before she got an I Pad and she says the same as me, and was asking me, how do you get Voice Over to read back a phrase or line even though we've been in advance settings. Re: BrailleTouch: Still more irritation by far!
Hi, Try left flicking with one finger to delete the last letter it typed and then start again. Sometimes when you oress one dot and then move your finger the previous dot stays down for whatever reason. I actually love the app, and have very good results with it. It really does increase speed even more than fleksie does. Just keep trying and be patient. It takes a bit to get used to, and there's always the advanced mode that reverses the dots if that feels better to you. hth Tammy -Original Message- From: Christopher-Mark Gilland Sent: Thursday, January 31, 2013 7:07 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: BrailleTouch: Still more irritation by far! The odd thing is just as I started getting it to work consistently, I put the phone down for not even a matter to just eat dinner, come back, and now, even holding the phone correctly, I'm not only getting the results I got earlier, but it's doing all kind of random letters. I tried just doing dot 1 for an A, and it thought I wanted a full cell. I tried doing the letter n, and it thought I wanted a new line. One time I did a dot 4 trying to do the, at, sign, and it did the letter w. Just totally! randomness. I really don't get why this thing's so inconsistent! This is just my opinion, you're also entitled to your's as I am to mine, so if you don't agree with me, that's your right, but tough, as far as trying to change mine, as unless someone can consistently work with me and convince me why I should keep/buy it, I'm definitely not going to be. Before you ask, yes I did politely mind you, so don't go there, write the devs. No responses yet though more than you raise valid points Mr. gilland. When I asked well, what can we do about it, they just said, we're not sure. That's tré assuring to hear. Sarcastic smile. I'm not giving up yet, as you all know me... I don't take no for an answer, but this is insane! Sayhing this thing's forgiving where you place your fingers? Um... I don't! think so! Chris Gilland. Re: IPhone cases and keyboards
Hi, You might try just getting the iphone and the defender case first without the overlay and see whether you can use it or it you like it before spending money on the overlay. You might find you can use the iphone well enough by itself. I would recommend the defender case over the one with the slide out keyboard because it will provide more protection for your phone. hth Tammy From: Missy Hoppe Sent: Tuesday, November 20, 2012 7:58 AM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: IPhone cases and keyboards Good morning, all. For a variety of reasons, I've just about decided to take the plunge and get an IPhone for Christmas. After a lot of thinking with regards to how to make this endeavor as budget-friendly as possible, my plan at this point is to get an unlocked 4S so that I can use it with Cincinnati Bell. From what I've heard, the only drawback will be that the fastest data rate I will be able to use is edge, but my thinking is that I'll use wifi whereever possible, so the slow data rate is worth it to keep my bill manageable. Anyway, I'm writing because I'm trying to plan ahead. I already know I'm going to want the tactile overlay from speeddots, but what I can't figure out is what case I should get. I understand that if I get the defender case, that means buying a different version of the speeddots overlay. The other case I'm considering is the one recommended on the speeddots site: the one with the built-in slide out keyboard. This is really appealing to me since 1 of my biggest fears in getting an IPhone has been the touch screen. I know that with Siri, I probably won't have to deal with it as much, so I'm torne between the really good defender case and the 1 with the keyboard. Naturally, I'm open to any suggestions anyone may have. Bulkiness is not an issue for me; I don't want the iphone for it's tiny form factor, so if anyone out there recommends a different case and/or keyboard, I'd be interested in hearing about it. Thank you all very much for your time, and I look forward to whatever advice you can offer. Missy -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. The programmers are people to and they make mistakes. 2. if they don't know it they can't fix it and it isn't in my humble opinion something to complain about here but to complain to Apple. I do think it's fine to warn people but I am somewhat of a developer so I kinda understand what goes in to this. Again I am sorry if I sound rough that's not the intention. On 11/5/2012 09:53 PM, Christopher-Mark Gilland wrote: OK, after updating to IOS 6.0.1 on my IPad, I'm seeing the app store is again! broken! I can't swipe left or right, up or down, one finger, two finger, etc. to move between results. I can get that first result to show, but past that, forget it. My IPhone doesn't have this issue. It still has the adjuster at the bottom I can one finger flick up and down on to move between results, but I cannot on the IPad move, regardless. Between that and the one finger flick up not working either as described earlier, I'm growing to hate the IPad little by little. Can Apple not keep their shit straight for one second!? Parden the français, , but this is crazy! I'm not gonna allow myself to be tied to my computer just to search for and install apps! That's ridiculous! Re: Pages and APA 6th edition style
I guess I'm really looking for an add-in software or template that will automatically allow me to select headers, paragraph style, citing with various formatting designations that APA requires by source type, etc. I know there is a msword based program thar sits on top of word, but I prefer pages. All the fussy in-text, and references that require the constant cross checking against the APA manual is very time consuming and taxes my limited vision severely. I was hoping for an automatic integration between writing a paper and formatting it with current APA guidelines, like a set of preformatted options from the editing tools. Re: Blindsquare (was Best GPS for me?)
Hi, I used it without 4square, but found I liked the checkins, and the game aspect of 4square. You don't have to broadcast at all unless you want to. Blindsquare is totally a stand alone app if you want it to be, and works really well on the bus or when you're walking to tell you street crossings etc. hth Tammy -Original Message- From: Alex Hall Sent: Thursday, October 25, 2012 4:58 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Blindsquare (was Best GPS for me?) Can this app be used without Foursquare entirely? It sounds useful when I am able to get an iPhone, but I don't use Foursquare and find those checkin tweets very annoying from others. Besides, I don't like the idea of my every move being broadcast to the world. Still, the app's ability to speak street names and mark commonly used locations seems perfect for my current navigational needs. Tammy -Original Message- From: Ilkka Pirttimaa Sent: Thursday, October 25, 2012 5:32 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Best GPS for me? Tammy, currently there is no way to use BlindSquare to add place to FourSquare. It's planned feature but now you have to do that with FourSquare client. BlindSquare will then show it in category Shared Places (I think it describes it better than Private, since it's shared among your 4sq frends). In BlindSquare you can add your own places. They are totally private to only you. They are stored to iCloud and synced in real time to your other devices if you happen to have for example iPad and iPhone. I have planned a feature that you could sync your own place to FourSquare but I haven't done that for 3 reasons: 1) You can already do it by using FourSquare client 2) There is no way to delete own place from FourSquare via API 3) I have so much more interesting ideas under development so I think you would like them to be implemented first :-) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Hi, thank you very much for this information. Tammy -Original Message- From: Ilkka Pirttimaa Sent: Monday, October 22, 2012 10:54 AM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Best GPS for me? Hello! I'm developer of BlindSquare. There is no try-and-buy option since TTS costs always. You can still use Apple's returning policies, there is always possibility to return app and get money back. About what BlindSquare does: It reports automatically street addresses while you walk, next street crossing, automatic pedometer reading (you have walked 700 meters in 7 minutes) and reporting of nearby places by categories (it automatically picks most popular places within selected radius, based on foursquare check-ins). This all happens just by launching the app so it takes no time to start using the app, even if you don't use FourSquare yourself. If you take phone out of the pocket, you can search categories, set reporting certain category on/off, look around (you get information what kind of places and what street crossings are in different directions), search with free search term, view information of places (name, address, phone number, www-site, twitter feed), start navigation to the place or do foursquare check-in. When you jump into the bus, BlindSquare automatically notices it and starts reporting street crossing while bus is making a turn so you can keep track where you are. You can also add placemarks for yourself. They are synced to iCloud so if you have several devices (for example iPad + iPhone), you always get informed when you get near that place. Some users use this to give warning about bus stop they need to get off. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Hi, Just to add to this, near the top of the screen there's a total download time, which will help you, and when all the maps are finished, at the bottom right of the screen above and to the right of the home button is a start app button. If you click on this navigon will start and be normal again. hth Tammy -Original Message- From: Eugenia Firth Sent: Saturday, September 22, 2012 3:00 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Cc: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Navegon Stuck Hi there I'm not sure if I can totally help you because it can't remember everything I did. However, there is a Start download button. You have to first go and select the ones you want. Then you choose the start download. It seems to me there was another one after that, but I can't see it in my current copy of Navigon because I'm not doing a download at this moment. If you get it going, each of your choices will show you how many minutes you have to go to complete the download when you touch it. I hope this helps some. Re: Atos Player On Paralympics Site Not Seeming Very Accessible
Hi, I have gotten the player to work with windows, but so far no success with mac. Even on windows it doesn't work well and sometimes crashes firefox and ie. It does seem a little strange that a site that promotes disability and accessibility isn't accessible. there's not even an audio capcha when you register to be a member of the site, which is truely pathetic. hth Tammy -Original Message- From: Teresa Cochran Sent: Thursday, August 30, 2012 3:29 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Atos Player On Paralympics Site Not Seeming Very Accessible Hi, all, Has anyone had success using this player for the Paralympics live stream? Hi, Look nobody here cares whether you buy it or not, we're just giving our opinion. We've paid the money and we have the full benefit of our experience using the program in it's full form. But it's ultimately up to you whether you buy it. You're the one going to be using it, and if you don't think it's going to save you time, then you'd be better off spending your money on a really nice, yet very expensive coffee or 2. As I've previously said, I love the program, but I know plenty who either think it's too expensive, or not worth it because they can type on the normal keyboard pretty fast, or use siri or dictate, etc. I wish the program could be built in to the op system, and that we could use it similar to emogi, as a built in keyboard. It would be a better program then, but for now, it's fantastic app, especially if you're typing out long emails or tseeting or txting alot. I love that you can add favourites so they appear on the menu so you can text or email right from the app, and the newest update makes using numbers and punctuation easy. Hi, You can also add words to the dictionary if you want to by flicking up after you've typed your word. The great thing is that even if it doesn't guess the right word, you can flick down to get other suggestions. Unless the word isn't in its built-in dictionary, the word you want will most definitely be there. That is why you can just wildly guess, touching somewhere in the general vicinity of the letter but not really carrying how close it is, because that's enough to get the word to come up. Hi all, So remember I mentioned that I’d downloaded chess-wise the other day? Well I have another question. What’s the procedure for castling in that program? question about checkers wise pro
Hi all, I downloaded checkers wise for my ipad because I love their chess program and thought the checkers would be just as good. Well I can’t get it to do anything, every move I seem to make it says is illegal, and I can’t get it to do anything much really . I’m extremely disappointed because I know the app is great but I can’t get it to work. What I’m doing is double tapping the piece I want to move, and then double tapping the square I want to move it to. The squares are numbered, or seem to be anyway, but the numbers don’t really make sense and I can’t move diagonally like you’re supposed to do in checkers. Maybe I’ll stick to chess, but I’d like to get this program working. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Re: Accessible Fruitmachine is published
Hi, Agree about the lock button or block button whatever it's saying, but the hold buttons are above and below the wheels. You can use either one to hold the wheel. I am also getting the vo not announcing the third wheel issue, hope it's fixed in the next version update. Tammy -Original Message- From: Chris Moore Sent: Wednesday, May 16, 2012 8:16 AM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Accessible Fruitmachine is published What I don't understand is why you can block (or is it lock?) left wheel but hold the other 2. Should it not say hold left wheel also to to make it more consistent? I am loving the game though and hope to see it grow, I feel it would be better if the hold buttons were below the wheels though and would like to see nudge added too. Would love to see game centre support. I am experiencing voice over not announcing the results of the last wheel when the option for hold appears. Voice over seems to skip the last wheel announcement and instead jumps directly to announcing the option to hold. This means you have to move your finger down to feel what the last wheel result was before deciding on which wheel to hold. Also though, I did want to let you know that I actually have been keeping up with subscriptions and such, so if any of you have had issues, this may actually be a google thing. I check subscription requests every few days and clear the queue each time, and have noticed that most times of late, Google has not behaved, causing me to make several tries to get everyone on the list. So it may be that even though the site says you're now subscribed you may not be. So if you seem not to be on the groups, and you feel you should be, give this one more try through Google Groups and if this fails, write me privately at either: caraqu...@caraquinn.com or modelc...@gmail.com As I said, I'm very busy of late, so it will most likely take me a few days to get back with you, but providing I do get your note, I will respond. Usually it takes me until the weekends at this point to catch up on email, but I'll do my best. :) So don't give up, K? Smiles, Cara :) --- NantWorks Object Recognition Technology Wins FCC Chairman's Award An Early Win for Newly Formed NantWorks LLC, LookTel Turns a Smart Phone into a Device That Helps the Blind to See LOS ANGELES, Oct 27, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) NantWorks LLC, the company formed by Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong in September this year, announced that its LookTel technology had been selected as a winner of the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) Chairman's Awards for Advancements in Accessibility. The award, which recognizes outstanding efforts to advance communications accessibility for people with disabilities, will be presented at a ceremony at FCC headquarters in Washington D.C. on October 28th 2011. LookTel was developed for the blind and visually impaired. It enables a standard smart phone to be used to recognize objects such as currency bills, packaged goods, medication bottles, storefronts and landmarks. Recognition happens in real time, without delay, and the device will speak the identity of the object, for example the denomination of a bill. We are honored to have been chosen for this award from the FCC, said Dr. Soon-Shiong, and delighted to be able to bring forward this important recognition platform, which is going to make a difference to many people's lives. About NantWorks NantWorks LLC is a company founded and led by Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong. Its mission is to converge semiconductor technology, supercomputing, advanced networks and augmented intelligence to transform how we work, play and live. Early applications will be in the field of scientific research and healthcare. For more information, see www.nantworks.com . Re: converting braille to text and text braille to audio
Gigi, thanks so much! My friend Liz, is a graduate student at Arizona so we don't often get to see eachother, except holidays. Would you mind me giving her your email address in case she has additional questions? I used to exclusively use PC's, in fact I started in the computer industry (manufacturing distribution) selling AT's and micro-channel based systems. I was pretty closed minded about Mac's, until I lost most of my vision. When I found out how much PC adaptation and accessibility equipment sold for, and having spent two decades in product management and sales, I was outraged. It was the first time I seriously considered Apple products. Now I would never go back! I love my iMac, iPad2, iPhone and won't give up my iPod touch for the life of me. As I still have a little vision left I rely on high contrast, I haven't become well versed in Braille and have yet to totally rely on VoiceOver. I'd like to take a class to become efficient as I tend to cheat with my eyes in order to quickly get my papers written. It's getting mite difficult A's my vision degrades. Sorry, I see I got off topic. Would it be okay to give Liz your email address? Thanks again, Tammy L. I hope the following statements don't give too much unneeded information and cause confusion. I know you just asked about braille translation. However, I, as a professional braille proofreader who needs a lot of braille on her computer, would like to share some observations which I hope will be helpful to your friend. These are things which I didn't know about the Mac before I got mine, and it took some getting used to. There is a significant difference that a I am finding in doing braille on the Mac from Windows. It never occurred to me that translator would work like VoiceOver does. I've never had one that did work like this. Let me see if I can explain what I'm talking about. Does your friend have a braille display with braille input keys? If so, he may want to try out his braille display for a while to get used to the fact that translation is not delayed in VoiceOver until a space or carriage return is pressed. This means that inputting in uncontracted braille is different with VoiceOver than it is with Jaws. At first, I had trouble on my Focus 40 inputting so that I didn't make a lot of mistakes. If I typed a letter and then stopped to think about what I was doing for too long in the wrong location, it got translated. Sometimes this gave me the wrong word. As a short example, if i typed the letter b, then stopped before going on, I got the word but. The letter b is short for the word but in braille. I had to learn when to stop so this didn't happen as often. I still am having some trouble with this, although I am getting better. I did not have a friend like yourself that had a Mac, so I was unable to practice with it beforehand. When I decided to switch I had to just get my own computer, after doing the most research I could on my questions. This braille input thing came as a surprise. Maybe you could help your friend set up portable preferences for VoiceOver on your computer so he could try these things out, with the help of us here on this list, of course. question about installing aps
Hi all, I hope someone can help me. I’m having issues installing adium. I seem to have the ap installed, but when I click on it it says somethingl ike poor server ui input or similar, sorry it wouldn’t let me read the text so I don’t know exactly what it said. But there was a show website and a cancel button there. What I did to install the ap is to download the file, and opened it using finder. There were four files in the folder, an alies file, a application file, a changes.txt file and a license file. I highlighted the application file, and pressed command c to copy it to clipboard. Then I pressed shift command a to get to applications, and command v to paste the file there. But like I said, when I clicked on it I got the ui message. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in Advance. Re: an oversight?
Hi, I don’t have any such problems using the ApStore. Did you press vo space or just enter? Tammy From: Shen Sent: Tuesday, June 07, 2011 3:07 AM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: an oversight? If you have the latest update in your Mac, you will find the App Store under the Apple menu. I decided to check it out for the first time today. It asks me for my Apple ID. I gave it my user name and password. The App Store tells me it is not associated with my iTunes account. OK, fine, let's do that. Here is the first stumbling block. You will first get the standard terms of agreement page. This page requires you to check a checkbox that you have read it, then click the Continue button. I think you know where I'm going with this. The checkbox was fine, no problem. But the Continue button refused to activate with VoiceOver Space. Enter, no way. Space, no dice either. It needed a mouse click. Next, I get the page to verify my payment information. At the end is the same Continue button. Again, this button does not respond to VoiceOver clicks. I get the feeling that anything I do in the App Store is going to be like that. I certainly hope it gets checked out at Apple soon. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group.
