Reading emails
I just found a trick that helps make reading emails go way faster. When you are inside the message of an email if you flick up with two fingers it starts reading from the beginning of the current message. I figured since I didn't know this someone else probably doesn't as well. Sincerely, Chad Rohr -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. This constant expectation increases ones frustration and only harms the learning process. Unfortunately, it doesn't work this way, and the more you battle that mindset, the less natural the Mac seems. The biggest thing I continually recommend to people I train is to completely stop thinking Windows and their Windows screen reader and to focus on learning OS X and VoiceOver. In six years now of having switched to the Mac, but still using Windows just to remind myself what I am not missing, I can tell you first hand that the Mac feels completely natural and I am so thankful for Apple every time I fire up my Windows PC and deal with the nonsense of that backwards operating system. The only task that I have found that I can't do as well from my Windows days is mudding, but I can deal with that in Terminal. I don't mud as much as I did, so I can tolerate not having a full fledged mud client. However, it would be nice if one could be found that works with VoiceOver as well as gmud or zmud does. However, I do find myself using it a few times a week, if for no other reason than to ensure that its software is fully up-to-date. Itunes is starting to grow on me a little, which I suppose is a good thing, but I'm not sure I'll ever become a complete apple-head. On the bright side, I think I'm to the point where if, God forbid, something catastrophic happened to my PC, I could at least function with the mac until finances permitted for me to get the pc fixed. I think that using VM fusion or bootcamp would make me spend a lot more time on my macbook, but since I can't afford to buy windows for it, I'm just not to that point yet. So, I don't know if/when the mac will feel natural for me, but I have to say that I think I've come pretty far with it since buying it in May; am just not in love with it, if that makes sense. I cannot turn VO on the host off and effectively control VO in the VM. If I could do this, I would have some interesting options. So, if anyone does figure this out let us know. SOmething tells me it won't be particularly easy. Now I did notice that I could toggle VO in the VM on/off without affecting the host machine, but where I encountered problems was if I wanted to use VO navigation controls in the VM, VO on the host machine would be affected. There is however a new shortcut that can be used to put the VM in to full screen mode. It is Control Command F. The older keystroke can still be used if you wish as well. When you put the VM in to full screen, VO gets really chatty about what space you are in so be prepared for that. Anyway, I hope this helps someone. Sorry if you are seeing this information twice. But in writing a book about both, I stumbled across an amazingly thoughtful feature that I haven’t seen a word about: something called AssistiveTouch. The Times’s technology columnist, David Pogue, keeps you on top of the industry in his free, weekly e-mail newsletter. Sign up | See Sample Now, Apple has always gone to considerable lengths to make the iPhone usable for people with vision and hearing impairments. If you’re deaf, you can have the LED flash to get your attention when the phone rings. You can create custom vibration patterns for each person who might call you. You can convert stereo music to mono (handy if you’re deaf in one ear). If you’re blind, you can literally turn the screen off and operate everything — do your e-mail, surf the Web, adjust settings, run apps — by tapping and letting the phone speak what you’re touching. You can also magnify the screen or reverse black for white (for better-contrast reading). In short, iPhone was already pretty good at helping out if you’re blind or deaf. But until iOS 5 came along, it was tough rocks if you had motor-control problems. How are you supposed to shake the phone (a shortcut for “Undo”) if you can’t even hold the thing? How are you supposed to pinch-to-zoom a map or a photo if you can’t even move your fingers? One new feature, called AssistiveTouch, is Apple’s accessibility team at its most creative. When you turn on this feature in Settings-General-Accessibility, a new, white circle appears at the bottom of the screen. It stays there all the time. When you tap it, you get a floating on-screen palette. Its buttons trigger motions and gestures on the iPhone screen without requiring hand or multiple-finger movement. All you have to be able to do is tap with a single finger — even a stylus you’re holding in your teeth or fist. For example, you can tap the Home on-screen button instead of pressing the physical Home button. If you tap Device, you get a sub-palette of six functions that would otherwise require you to grasp the phone or push its tiny physical buttons. There’s Rotate Screen (tap this instead of turning the phone 90 degrees), Lock Screen (tap instead of pressing the Sleep switch), Volume Up and Volume Down (tap instead of pressing the volume keys), Shake (does the same as shaking the phone to undo typing), and Mute/Unmute (tap instead of flipping the small Mute switch on the side). If you tap Gestures, you get a peculiar palette that depicts a hand holding up two, three, four, or five fingers. When you tap the three-finger icon, for example, you get three blue circles on the screen. They move together. Drag one of them, and the phone thinks you’re dragging three fingers on its surface. Using this technique, you can operate apps that require multiple fingers dragging on the screen. To me, the most impressive part is that you can define your own gestures. In Settings-General-Accessibility, you can tap Create New Gesture to draw your own gesture right on the screen, using up to five fingers. For example, suppose you’re frustrated in Google Maps because you can’t do the two-finger double-tap that means “zoom out.” On the Create New Gesture screen, get somebody to do the two-finger double-tap for you. Tap Save and give the gesture a name—say, “2 double tap.” From now on, “2 double tap” shows up on the final AssistiveTouch panel, called Favorites, ready to trigger with a single tap by a single finger or stylus. (Apple starts you off with one predefined gesture already in Favorites: Pinch. That’s the two-finger pinch or spread gesture you use to zoom in and out of photos, maps, Web pages, PDF documents, and so on. Now you can trigger it with only one finger.) I doubt that people with severe motor control challenges represent a financially significant number of the iPhone’s millions of customers. But somebody at Apple took them seriously enough to write a complete, elegant and thoughtful feature that takes down most of the barriers to using an app phone. I, for one, am impressed. And I’d also like to hear, in the Comments, from people who actually use

Because of this and some other access issues with paypal and ebay, i have been asked to document why things like pdf and captcha are issues for those using adaptive tools. I have told them already that to assume everyone is using jaws is impractical, and that still browsers like lynx, with its recent edition dated June 2011, are good foundations for access. I have shared that pdf reaains a hurtle, and captcha is flat out an issue, as is stuff like flash. because they are serious though I want to make maximum use of this opportunity. What I would welcome is article information, places that discuss why pdf for example and captcha remain barriers. Likewise posts from you if you have met with issues with either service would be welcome. I want them to fix this for everyone, not just sweep me under the corporate rug. That they are shifting all document responsibility t the end user is disturbing, since if you have an issue say with security, you will bare the blame for any discrepancies in documentation. Re: Search in Apple Mail
Hi David. I'm assuming you are viewing messages in the messages table. I usually just press enter when I get to the message I want and Voiceover reads the full message to me. Of course there's also interacting with the message content table, then pressing down arrow once, and Voiceover should read the message. Hi, Here's what you do. BTW, the same option exists in Snow Leopard. Go to system prefs and select keyboard. Now select the keyboard shortcuts tab. In the first table you encounter, choose services. Now in the second table interact, then arrow down to add to iTunes as a spoken track Make sure the checkbox for this is checked. In column 3 of this table is an edit field. If you interact with this, and preform a mouse click (providing you've moved the mouse cursor to the spot) you can input a keyboard shortcut for the action. For example, you can press command option A in the edit field and pressing that would send the selected text to iTunes as an audio file. Once you have at least the action enabled via the checkbox, it should show up in the menu bar underneath the applications menu. Like Mail, iTunes, Safari, etc. once in here arrow down to the services sub menu. Use VO down arrow to find the Add to iTunes option. I suggest using VO down arrow because, on occasion, I have experienced just using the arrow keys will skip over this option for some strange reason. hth . hi chris i have a balance i need to pay apple off its strange never had this problem before it worked fine in previous versions of itunes i interacted with the html contenet i seen a bunch of stuff like edit payment info and purchase history i went to purchase istory didn't see nothing i'll keep trying i want to pay apple off i know i have money on my card to do it my balance is $19 that don't show up all it said invalid security code that's same code i been using all along thanks On Jul 20, 2011, at 6:06 AM, Christopher-Mark Gilland wrote: Well, let's see... So, if you go to the store menu with vo+M, then vo+right arrow over to it, if you then go down to view my account, you should then get an html web area content area you can interact with, and your balance should be in there. If nothing else, it should show your balance as a button before you reach that content area. I guess, chad, when you say you can't see your balance, I'm a little bit confused. Are you saying you have some credit on your account issued by either Apple, or by a gift card? That's the only way, aside a promo code, that your account would have a redeemed balance. Sorry for the confusion. I'm just trying to get a better handle on this. As for writing Apple support, that was definitely not a bad idea. Hopefully, they'll get back with you within 24 business hours and let you know what's up. Take care, and good luck.
