Reading emails

2014-05-14 Thread Chad Rohr
I just found a trick that helps make reading emails go way faster. When you are
inside the message of an email if you flick up with two fingers it starts
reading from the beginning of the current message.
I figured since I didn't know this someone else probably doesn't as well.

Is there a way on the iPad to read pdf documents other than it reading the

Converting video to audio

2013-03-23 Thread Chad Rohr
I have ripped some DVDs that I own with dvdReMaster to m4v format. Now I am
trying to just get the audio from the files. Can anyone suggest the best way to
go about this?
Also if there is a way to do it with dvdReMaster without having to rip it to
m4v format before hand could someone explain to me how to do this.
Thank you very much

Chad Rohr

I have ripped a bunch of my DVDs that I bought a while ago. But it's probably
been like six months Since I have done this. What is the best application that
you guys use for ripping commercially bought DVDs?
I was using DVD reMaster But I know there is a new version of that and I can't
get my old version to work correctly.
Thank you very much for the assistance.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work this way, and the more you battle that

In six years now of having switched to the Mac, but still using Windows

the Mac feels completely natural and I am so thankful for Apple every time I
fire up my Windows PC and deal with the nonsense of that backwards operating

The only task that I have found that I can't do as well from my Windows

I think that using VM fusion or bootcamp would make me spend a lot more

So, I don't know if/when the mac will feel natural for me, but I have to

found a way to get VO to behave. I cannot turn VO on the host off and
effectively control VO in the VM. If I could do this, I would have some
interesting options. So, if anyone does figure this out let us know.
SOmething tells me it won't be particularly easy. Now I did notice that I
could toggle VO in the VM on/off without affecting the host machine, but
where I encountered problems was if I wanted to use VO navigation controls
in the VM, VO on the host machine would be affected. Complicated? Yeah, a
 little, but ah the potential.

accessibility department. I personally think that this is okay. I've always
found Fusion easy to use to get done the work that I need to do in windows.
There is however a new shortcut that can be used to put the VM in to
full screen mode. It is Control Command F. The older keystroke can still be
used if you wish as well. When you put the VM in to full screen, VO gets
really chatty about what space you are in so be prepared for that.
Anyway, I hope this helps someone.

Apple’s AssistiveTouch Helps the Disabled Use a Smartphone

Plenty has been written about the new iPhone 4S, with its voice-controlled
virtual assistant Siri, and about iOS 5, its software.

But in writing a book about both, I stumbled across an amazingly thoughtful
feature that I haven’t seen a word about: something called AssistiveTouch.

The Times’s technology columnist, David Pogue, keeps you on top of the
industry in his free, weekly e-mail newsletter.
 Sign up | See Sample
Now, Apple has always gone to considerable lengths to make the iPhone usable
for people with vision and hearing impairments. If you’re deaf, you can have
the LED flash to get your attention when the phone rings. You can create
custom vibration patterns for each person who might call you. You can convert
stereo music to mono (handy if you’re deaf in one ear).

If you’re blind, you can literally turn the screen off and operate everything
 — do your e-mail, surf the Web, adjust settings, run apps — by tapping and
letting the phone speak what you’re touching. You can also magnify the screen
or reverse black for white (for better-contrast reading).

In short, iPhone was already pretty good at helping out if you’re blind or
deaf. But until iOS 5 came along, it was tough rocks if you had motor-control
problems. How are you supposed to shake the phone (a shortcut for “Undo”) if
you can’t even hold the thing? How are you supposed to pinch-to-zoom a map or
a photo if you can’t even move your fingers?

One new feature, called AssistiveTouch, is Apple’s accessibility team at its
most creative. When you turn on this feature in
Settings-General-Accessibility, a new, white circle appears at the bottom
of the screen. It stays there all the time.

When you tap it, you get a floating on-screen palette. Its buttons trigger
motions and gestures on the iPhone screen without requiring hand or
multiple-finger movement. All you have to be able to do is tap with a single
finger — even a stylus you’re holding in your teeth or fist.

For example, you can tap the Home on-screen button instead of pressing the
 physical Home button.
If you tap Device, you get a sub-palette of six functions that would
otherwise require you to grasp the phone or push its tiny physical buttons.
There’s Rotate Screen (tap this instead of turning the phone 90 degrees),
Lock Screen (tap instead of pressing the Sleep switch), Volume Up and Volume
Down (tap instead of pressing the volume keys), Shake (does the same as
shaking the phone to undo typing), and Mute/Unmute (tap instead of flipping
the small Mute switch on the side).

If you tap Gestures, you get a peculiar palette that depicts a hand holding
up two, three, four, or five fingers. When you tap the three-finger icon, for
example, you get three blue circles on the screen. They move together. Drag
one of them, and the phone thinks you’re dragging three fingers on its
surface. Using this technique, you can operate apps that require multiple
 fingers dragging on the screen.

To me, the most impressive part is that you can define your own gestures. In
Settings-General-Accessibility, you can tap Create New Gesture to draw your
own gesture right on the screen, using up to five fingers.

For example, suppose you’re frustrated in Google Maps because you can’t do
the two-finger double-tap that means “zoom out.” On the Create New Gesture
screen, get somebody to do the two-finger double-tap for you. Tap Save and
give the gesture a name—say, “2 double tap.”

From now on, “2 double tap” shows up on the final AssistiveTouch panel,
called Favorites, ready to trigger with a single tap by a single finger or
stylus. (Apple starts you off with one predefined gesture already in
Favorites: Pinch. That’s the two-finger pinch or spread gesture you use to
zoom in and out of photos, maps, Web pages, PDF documents, and so on. Now you
can trigger it with only one finger.)

I doubt that people with severe motor control challenges represent a
financially significant number of the iPhone’s millions of customers. But
somebody at Apple took them seriously enough to write a complete, elegant and
thoughtful feature that takes down most of the barriers to using an app phone.
 I, for one, am impressed.

And I’d also like to hear, in the Comments, from people who actually use

hi.
Do you have automatic login enabled?
You may need to go to system preferences, then users and groups, then interact
with, users, accounts, and login options.
Navigate down to where it says, login options group.
Stop interacting with users, accounts and login options.
right arrow over, and you'll see your log in options.
You should see a check box that says, use voiceover in the login window.
If that is unchecked, and you want voiceover to start at the login window,
check that box.
If automatic login is enabled, when you first log in, press command f5, to turn

The next time you log in, voiceover *should* come up automatically.

Re: making adium not continuously bringing up a window

Hi Matt.
I had this happen as well.
Go to Adium preferences.
Under the Events tab, navigate to the events table.
Expand the section that says, Contact signs on.
If you see something that says, Display Growl notification, press the delete

Do the same under the section that says, Contact signs off.
I had to delete that preference under the Message Received section as well.
Hope this helps.

Of course there's also interacting with the message content table, then

If there is more than one message in a thread, its much the same way. The

 No problem,

BTW, I should have mentioned this before. When you do the text to audio
conversion, it makes an AAC file by default. You can always create an mp3
 version afterwards of course.

 Hi,

Here's what you do. BTW, the same option exists in Snow Leopard. Go to
system prefs and select keyboard. Now select the
keyboard shortcuts tab. In the first table you encounter, choose services.
Now in the second table interact, then arrow
down to add to iTunes as a spoken track Make sure the checkbox for this is
checked. In column 3 of this table is an edit
field. If you interact with this, and preform a mouse click (providing
you've moved the mouse cursor to the spot) you can
input a keyboard shortcut for the action. For example, you can press
command option A in the edit field and pressing that
would send the selected text to iTunes as an audio file.

Once you have at least the action enabled via the checkbox, it should show
up in the menu bar underneath the applications
menu. Like Mail, iTunes, Safari, etc. once in here arrow down to the
services sub menu. Use VO down arrow to find the Add
to iTunes option. I suggest using VO down arrow because, on occasion, I
have experienced just using the arrow keys will skip
over this option for some strange reason.

one could make an mp3 out of a document. I have a file which I'd love
to have Alex read as an mp3, but can't figure out how to do it. I
checked the context menu when the file was selected, but didn't see
any relevant options. Do I need special software similar to text aloud
to make this happen on my mac, or am I just not looking in the right place
to find the feature? I understand that I can't
create a multi-voice file the same way I can using text aloud on my PC, but
just having Alex read something into mp3 format
would be more than adequate for now. Thanks in advance to anyone who can
help me figure this out, and I hope that everyone is

Is there a way to turn off the trackpad entirely, while using a macbook or

am in dash board. Of course, you can turn that off, but is there a way to
have the trackpad not react to me when I accidentally touch it? I know you
can turn on mouse keys, but that is not really a solution. Having an external
mouse or trackpad can be done as well, but I'm hoping to find how to just
turn off the internal laptop trackpad. Any ideas?

 Hello,
I just used the comma and period keys respectively and here's what happened.
I located a file in my documents folder, interacted with it and pressed VO
comma, the file was then marked.
Then I moved to my desktop and attempted to use VO period, but I also got the
message about the file not being available any more.
So, for me, it isn't working the way I think it should.

 Hi listers,
Has anybody running Lion gotten drag and drop to work correctly using
voiceover? I opened the keyboard commander and assigned a command to mark an
item for dragging. I then assigned another command to drop an item on the
voiceover cursor. Whenever I select a document in a folder and then move to
another folder, I get the message from voiceover that the marked item is no
longer available. As an example I have not been able to drag a document from
the documents folder on to my desktop. Voiceover says the item is no longer
available. Even when I try dragging an item from documents to a folder
contained within my documents folder, I get the notification that voiceover
has failed to move the item.
Does anybody know what's going on here?

 Well, let's see...

So, if you go to the store menu with vo+M, then vo+right arrow over to it, if
you then go down to view my account, you should then get an html web area
content area you can interact with, and your balance should be in there. If
nothing else, it should show your balance as a button before you reach that
 content area.

I guess, chad, when you say you can't see your balance, I'm a little bit
confused. Are you saying you have some credit on your account issued by
either Apple, or by a gift card? That's the only way, aside a promo code,
that your account would have a redeemed balance.

 Sorry for the confusion.

I'm just trying to get a better handle on this.

As for writing Apple support, that was definitely not a bad idea. Hopefully,
they'll get back with you within 24 business hours and let you know what's up.

 Take care, and good luck.

 Chris.
