Re: Mantis q40.

2024-04-20 Thread Gabe Griffith
Hi Anders,

I have a Mantis and love it. The only issue I'm aware of with it and the Mac is
that I believe it only works over USB. There was an update a few weeks ago that
could have chanered that but I don't think so.

Hi!
I am going to get a Mantis q40 and I can finally dig my ergonomic issues I have
had with braille displays and querty keyboards.
Just a question.
Are there any glitches or issues with the Mac and the mantis?
And if so are these issues easy enough to resolve.
Bless.

Mantis Q40 braille display for sale

2023-11-19 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

I have obtained permission from Mark to post the following info to the list:

I am putting my Mantis Q40 Braille display up for sale. For those who don’t
know, it is a forty-cell display with a qwerty keyboard. I really like the
device, and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in a qwerty
keyboard and braille with their I-device. That is what I bought it for, and in
terms of its performance, I’ve been very satisfied with it. I’m selling it
because I’ve developed arthritis in my hands, and using the thumb keys to read
has become uncomfortable for me. I’ve had the unit for two years, but it has
been very lightly used.

I’m asking $1400 plus shipping from Illinois in the US. Please note that the
unit was shipped with a plastic case that fit around it. I can no longer find
that, so it will be shipped only with the charger. I imagine that you could
get a replacement case from APH, I just never used it, so I didn’t bother.

If you are interested, please contact me off-list at doniado...@me.com
<mailto:doniado...@me.com>.
Thanks,
Donna

Hi!
So this display is for the US only guess?
Then I guess its not for me yet if they don’t make it available in other
countries with the correct keyboard layout.

Re: Feedback update Mantis Q40

2021-03-03 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Tracy,

That's one drawback to the Mantis. When you switch devices, you have to do it
manually from the device. I didn't keep mine, so I don't remember the exact
process, and the latest update may have made the process more streamline.
Joseph can speak to that better than I.

Using the keyboard in your lap is, in my opinion, a place where the Mantis
truly excels. I loved being able to just put my phone or my iPad on the coffee
table, set the Mantis in my lap, and just do everything from there. If you're a
qwerty user, that feature alone is truly awesome!

BTW, the reason I did not keep the mantis was because I wanted a more robust
editor. I don't care much about calendars, stopwatch timers, and stuff like
that, because I just use my phone for those things. But I do want the option to
do editing independently of my i-device. Mostly, the editor on the Mantis is
pretty good, but it has some file size limitations that didn't work for me.
That said, I'm still very interested in the Mantis, and I suspect that
eventually, I will own one.

The staff at APH are very helpful. I found them to be great to deal with. The
user list for the Mantis is full of helpful people, and when I returned my
unit, the return was handled promptly, with no questions asked. The one
drawback is that at that time--and I think maybe still--the Mantis was
back-ordered. So they had my money for a good month(ish) before I got my unit.
I imagine that either has changed, or will change, because the back order was
due to supply chain issues related to COVID.

Hope this helps.

Re: Feedback update Mantis Q40

2021-03-03 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all,

So something I’m still not clear on when comparing older braille displays and
new ones, is the multiple connections. My 4th gen Focus 14 connects to one
device at a time, however it does automatically connect. So, if I am on my
iPhone using it, lock that phone and move over to my iPad, the Focus works with
that device.

Is that the difference? The new displays connect to multiple devices, but I
need to reestablish the connection?

Back to the Mantis specifically, could I use the keyboard on my lap?

As far as I understand, I’d purchase Mantis directly through APH right? I’m not
super familiar with them as far as a store goes. Last year I bought some slate
& stylus supplies. :) That’s the extent of my consumer experience.

Thanks,
Traci

Full disclosure I work for APH. However I am totally blind myself and I would
not try to miss lead anyone.

The Mantis for me is a great keyboard. I like that I can switch from my Mac, to
my Windows, to my iPhone easily all one keyboard. I mention this in my demos
but I used to work in insurance and having a keyboard and a Braille Display
drove me nuts because your constantly fiddling where they both are. With this
its one device. I think the terminal where you connect to IOS and such is
wonderful. We have had issues with IOS do to the new Hid standard and Apple
just not getting it right, but these will be worked out shortly.

Thickness its thicker than my MacBook Pro lol. However it goes in my bag fine
where I would put a laptop.

I like having an editor but the older I get I would be just fine with a dummy
device only that connects to my devices I need. I don’t need the extras they
are nice but Bookshare locally I only use for testing because I just use
Voicedream reader and sync between all my devices.

The one thing and place I think I wouldn’t reccomend the Mantis is travel. I
mean the Mantis is small and usable on the go, but if your in a taxi cab do you
see yourself really using a qwerty to type and be productive? If you never use
a display in this manner then it won't bother you, but if you are someone who
uses their display a lot on the go you may not like the size.

Me personally I think I could see this sitting on my desk full time or maybe
take it out to my recliner but I would prefer a skinnier display to take with
my more powerful devices on the road.

It is more like a laptop keyboard. However, the keys are a comfortable size,
spacing is comfortable, and the key action is very good. I found it very easy
to type on.

It has been a while since this device has come out. I wondered if those of you
that are using it could update the groups with your experience.

Connectivity, ease of use, switching between phone, tablet, computer, etc.

I’m very interested in the Mantis Q40, but admittedly nervous about such a
large purchase. I own a Focus 14 Blue and purchased that in 2013.

Thank you for any user experience you share.

Hi my name is Joe and I work at APH in quality assurance. To answer your
question no the Orbit writer won’t connect the same way. The reason the Mantis
does and also our Chameleon does is the new hid standard. Thats the standard
Microsoft apple and others worked on. Its still new and I believe currently
were the only one supporting this. I believe the Orbit does on the Mac but not
on the iPhone currently. If I can help in any other way please let me know.

I think we are all in the same place re this review. You are saying things that
have already been said. I only posted it as one other resource for people to
consider. And, while you and I may find his review and experience to be
cursory, I do think there's value in reading the perspective of a newcomer to
this technology, particularly for anyone on this list who may also be in that

In my experience, finding the shortcomings of a product or service often takes
time. Thus I would prefer an opinion that is informed by a longer review
period. Most of the details likely to be found in a quick review are probably
in the manual or the product specifications anyway. Also, if I read a review
that is a year or two old, I have to consider whether any of the issues noted
by the reviewer are likely to have been fixed since then - doubly so if the
reviewer had access to pre-production versions of a hardware product.

Hi again Donna.
His review was rather quick, and the perspective of someone who is
more new to braille, so it's worth having. I waited about a month to
use the iPhone SE 2020 before I wrote my review on that. I don't
believe in doing too quick of a turn around time on things, 3-4 weeks
seems like enough time to spot things that are important that may be
missed during a 1 week trial period. There's always that question:
what's more important? A quick review that can be done immediatley, or
a review that involves more testing but takes longer. I tend to favor
the latter, though I certainly can see value in the former. Smiles.

I would think both the Mantis and the Chameleon would eventually
support NLS, given that Humanware is one of the companies contracted
out to provide the braille displays that will be distributed by NLS.

2020-08-06 Thread Scott Davert
Hi Donna.
Thanks for posting the review. I guess that gives the reader an
overview, but it fails to answer a lot of questions a more advanced
braille user would ask. Also, the Braille Sense u2 QWERTY could
connect to an iPhone or other external device, so his assertion that
it's the first QWERTY braille device to connect to external ones is
wrong. He has a good point about beginner users of braille using it.
There's a much less steep learning curve.

Hi all.
I'm writing this with the Mantis, but I no longer have access to a
Mac, so I'm not able to report on that.
With iOS 13.6, it works quite well. The thing to remember is that you
are using a QWERTY keyboard with this set up, so many of the things
you may have learned about Perkins-style keyboards do not apply. What
does apply, though, are all of the good and bad things about running a
Bluetooth keyboard on iOS. You need to be familiar with how QuickNav
works, when to use it, and of course the VO modifier keys. I'm writing
from Windows currently, as I had to sell my Mac to help pay for my new
hearing aids.
One of the really neat things about the Mantis and Chameleon is the
built in Wifi which allows you to download Bookshare and NFB Newsline
content. Not only can you do that, but if you download daisy content
from Bookshare, you can navigate by heading level. NFB Newsline only
offers Daisy, but you can do the same with that service.

Just some info,
Scott

Hi Scott,

thanks. It's been a while since I've seen a Braillenote, but that does suggest
that the braille is a little softer than I typically like. I've not seen an
Apex, so I don't know what those keys looked like.

In case you are anyone else is curious, here is the review that I read. It
seems like this reviewer is fairly new to adaptive tech, though, so I'm not
sure how similar their experience will be for those of us who've been at this a
while.

Re: Mantis Q40?

2020-08-06 Thread Scott Davert
Hi Donna.
If you have felt the braille of the BrailleNote Touch, or even the
Apex, Iwould equate the feel of the dots to one of those devices. I
was not aware that anyone else had reviewed the Mantis yet. My review
should be in the August issue of Access World.
As for the keys, I would equate those to the BrailleNote Apex QT. The
size is also similar. The keys aren't noisy, though, it sounds about
as loud to me as any laptop would. Then again, my ears are quite
broken, so I may not be the best judge of that.

HTH,
Scott

for less. The Focus is actually $500 more.

Re: Mantis Q40?

2020-08-06 Thread Scott Davert

Just some info,
Scott

Hello all,

I’m very new to the group tough I’ve had a Mac for some years now.
I’m about to purchase the Chameleon as I prefer compact sized displays and my
old Varioultra20 is indicating that it wants to go to the big braille display
bin in the sky!

I’m looking forward to learning more about t the product and will hopefully
love this unit as much as my other 2 displays.

Thanks Les. It was a lot of fun. One thing to note on the Mac because were
using the new standard Apple is having some issues with bluetooth. USBC
connects fine, but it is something to note incase your hoping to be portable.
Were hoping for a fix in the next update.

The main difference between the Q Braille is that your having to connect twice.
The Mantis you only connect once and you get the bluetooth and Braille Display
its the beauty of the new hid standard.

It sounds like the mantis works the same way. But again, I bet Sheehan on the

The QBraille input also connects through the standard Bluetooth because it
works as a standard QWERTY keyboard. The braille output connects through the
braille display section in VoiceOver settings.

Is this similar to the Mantis arrangement?

Re: Mantis Q40?

2020-08-05 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Mary,

I've already signed up for the Mantis email list. I'm not too optimistic about
it, as I've never been a fan of Humanware, but we'll see.

Happily, it looks like I may be able to arrange a demo of the QBraille. It's on
the expensive end of things, but I would sure like to see any of these units
before I buy, and neither APH nor FS has the option of getting a demo.
Cheers,
Donna

Hi Donna,
I have not use this display, but if you are interested, there is a mailing list
dedicated to both it and the Chamaeleon, the 20cell variant that has a braille
keyboard rather than a quirky one. You can also see the manual on the APH
mantis dedicated page. If you’re interested in the email list, info on that is
also on the APH page. There is active tech support there. like you, I have
heard very bad things about the orbit reader Forty, and I don’t think it’s even
out yet. But one of the folks who has been a distributor for them said this
thing is not ready for prime time at a recent blindness convention.
