Re: question for anybody with a 2016 macbook pro

2017-01-20 Thread Scott Granados
I would wager a big part of your slowness problem is you’re still using
rotating disks. These are 80 times slower than the latest SSD disks and will
exhibit this kind of behavior.

Just a guess but that’s what this problem feels like.

Hi Jeff,

I stand corrected. Sorry. I should have checked more carefully before posting
that. My 2011 15" MBP only has the USB 2 ports, so I assumed the 2012 did too.
That's what I get for making assumptions.

My setup is similar to yours except I created a Fusion array with the 7200 RPM
drive I moved over into the optical drive bay. You may still have the issue of
iTunes trying to copy over as the extra drive you've installed is separate from
your Home Directory location. It is possible to move your iTunes Library
folder onto the other drive instead of it being in your Home Directory. Using
this configuration, you may experience better performance when importing large
amounts of data into iTunes even though the media is on a 5400 RPM spinning
drive.

Hi,

What process are you using to import the AudioBooks? I just tested mine for
fun, by importing 18 GB of AudioBooks, about 180 titles. The copying from the
Desktop into the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder took about 10 minutes or
so, but other than that, iTunes did not cough or burp at all. FyI, iTunes was
not open at the time of the copy. Things like Apple Music or iTunes Match
which use the iCloud Music Library may cause things to lag a little, but
shouldn't be show stoppers.

Simon, if possible, you may wish to divide that 1 TB up a little. Maybe into 2
or 300 GB segments and see what happens. It sounds to me like the
re-organization and database writing may be taxing your system.

Hi there, I have a Mid 2015 with the full Terabyte of storage (SSD) and the 2.8
I7 quad core and it’s lightning fast. Virtual machines, disk access, moving
data around the network, everything you would want it’s blazing fast. The
wireless is also quite good.

Smaller disk drives may be slower depending on how these are designed but for
my configuration at least things are very very fast.

2017-01-17 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

If things haven't changed since my last check, even when you have it set to not
copy to your iTunes Library, it will actually attempt the copy when importing
from an external drive. If that drive happens to be a USB drive, then it will
probably be quite slow on that machine as I believe that the ports on the 2012
MBP are USB 2 ports. I get around this issue on my home MacPro by placing the
entire 3 TB iTunes Library on a separate drive, thus not using up space in my
system drive. This may be more challenging when working with the MBP as you
likely wish access to your iTunes Library without the need to carry around an
external drive. There's probably something we could figure out, if needed
though.

RE: question for anybody with a 2016 macbook pro

2017-01-16 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Geoff,

 Yeah it will.

I've got a terabyte of audio content, books and music,

I've tried multiple times to import both my audio books and music into itunes
and things stop for days,

I can't see how a newer mac book will speed this up as it's still got a
truckload of data to sort out

I'd love to be wrong but I've just tried on a 2012 mac mini with 2.6 quad core
i7 processor and 16 GB ram with 1tb fusion drive and that stopped for 2 days
before I killed it due to the delay and I'm running it on a 1GB wired network

Hi there, I have a Mid 2015 with the full Terabyte of storage (SSD) and the 2.8
I7 quad core and it’s lightning fast. Virtual machines, disk access, moving
data around the network, everything you would want it’s blazing fast. The
wireless is also quite good.

Smaller disk drives may be slower depending on how these are designed but for
my configuration at least things are very very fast.

Re: question for anybody with a 2016 macbook pro

2017-01-16 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Jeff,

Any chance you have Apple Music service or iTunes match These services try to
do a bit more with sound files when they are imported. Still I wouldn't think
it would stall your entire system.

I do notice with my corporate Macintosh, that it does not like me putting the
system to sleep when I leave in the evening. I haven't completely figured it
out, but if I use my Cisco VPN service and then try using the computer in a few
hours where my WiFi connections have changed then the computer stalls for 20
seconds on application switch or when I request a menu be activated. When this
happens only a reboot resolves my "pizza wheel" / Application busy messages.

?
Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: question for anybody with a 2016 macbook pro

2017-01-16 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Jeff,

How much RAM in your 2012 machine? I have a 2011 MBP with a home-made Fusion
drive and 16 GB of RAM and do not experience the issues you're mentioning. I
have upgraded a few of the 2012 models for colleagues and increased memory
along with the SSD has made considerable differences in performance.
