I am taking a different path to see if I can easily create or edit text
files on the Mac that will read correctly in Windows.

TwctEdit does not insert the CR and LF codes needed by Windows. I do not
want to take extra steps to work around this such as using LineBreak which was
last updated in 2008. If I can save files as .txt in Pages that may work but
again, that means extra work.

So I am looking for accessible (and free) text editors for the Mac that just
might work.

You may also be able to share an RTF file to pages. Then, when you open a RTF

Hi all,

I've been following this thread, but until this morning haven't had much time
to work on finding a solution. But, I have found one.

ET, if you access the rtf file through Pages rather than files, it will open in
Pages rather than VDR. So do the following:
1. Open Pages.
2. Scroll through the list of files till you get to the document you want.
3. Double-tap to open.

You will be in your document in Pages.

I don't know why VDR takes over like it does, but at least there's a
work-around. I hope this helps.
Cheers,

So for iCloud files my understanding is IOS will look at the Macintoshes
creator tag which indicates the application that created the file and if that
exists on iOS want to use that. Why, your iOS is defaulting to reader for RTF,
I do not know. But, if you start a file in pages on the Mac it should open in
pages on iOS. If you start a file in word on Mac, should open in word on iOS.

Sure. If RTF meets your needs, it's a good choice. It's stable and
widely supported.
RTF isn't appropriate for any kind of programming, including web content
authoring. So, it does depend on what you're needs are.

Happy to help, if you find you need basic ASCII text. It's actually not
that hard once you get a few basics in place.

Best,

Janina

Hi,

Does the file need to be a text file - I use pages and simply export the file
to word if I need to share with a word user either PC or Mac and it seems to
work fine and the formatting stays - I might have missed what it is you want to
do but thought I would share just in case it helps

Re: Text Editors for Mac

2019-04-28 Thread 'Devin Prater' via MacVisionaries
I’m partial to Emacs, with Emacspeak of course, and Org-mode. Just write your
file,
** Make headings

** make a list like this:
- Unordered list item
1. Ordered item
- Italics is made like /this/.
- Bold is made like *this*.

You can also just write Latex in it, and it’ll come out exported as Latex would
be in that format.
After you’re done, you can just export the file as HTML, ODT, Plain Text, or
Markdown. Then, if you need to, you can use Pandoc to convert the ODT file to
Word format or RTF, I assume Pandoc should support RTF.

Using Org-mode, or even Markdown, allows you to really control the formatting
of a document, and Emacspeak helps by changing pitch and entonation to call
attention to formatting, along with the symbols you use for denoting formatting.

On my Linux I have two apps called dos2unix and unix2dos which handle

There are apps which will spot the problem when you load a text file and
offer to do, or simply do the conversion for you on the fly. Problem
here is that you need such an app on up to three separate environments.

The only hitch is on the iPhone when I access the document via the Files

On Macintosh it's Ctrl+M

On Windows it's both Ctrl+J and Ctrl+M together.

There are tools for converting among these formats at the command line.
On my Linux I have two apps called dos2unix and unix2dos which handle
these things.

There are apps which will spot the problem when you load a text file and
offer to do, or simply do the conversion for you on the fly. Problem
here is that you need such an app on up to three separate environments.

Pretty much any non graphical app from the Linux/Unix world can be used
on a Mac, because the Mac runs a variant of BSD Unix as its shell. Get
yourself an install of homebrew and brew up whatever app you might want
to run in the terminal:

2019-04-27 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries

Simon,
I don't know what that is but have been trying different things and
have determined I should avoid plain text formats. So I went to .rtf
which may do it. TextEdit will open that on the Mac and edited the
document in TextEdit then viewed it under Windows in MS Word and it came
through fine.

The only hitch is on the iPhone when I access the document via the
Files app, Voice Dream Reader launches. I don't want that. I do have MS
Word which I ma need to activate, and Pages as well. I will activate MS
Word and see what happens. Using iCloud Drive I wish to make life easy
for me (smiles) and be able to read and edit as needed on any platform.

Hmm, Mac Vim. Will look at that too but if I can work around Voice
Dream Reader I will have it nailed down.

So I am looking for accessible (and free) text editors for the Mac that
just might work.

RE: Text Editors for Mac

2019-04-27 Thread Simon Fogarty
HI ET,

Is there a version of VIM or VI that would work on the mac?

These are linux text editors I'm just wondering if something like that might
work for you.

So I am looking for accessible (and free) text editors for the Mac that
just might work.

RE: Current text editors for Mac OS?

2019-03-11 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
Interesting – thanks. I’ve used and definitely like Emacspeak under Linux.
Running Emacs from a terminal with Emacspeak and with BRLTTY controlling the
braille display is undoubtedly the best text editing experience that I’ve
encountered on any platform.

BRLTTY for Mac used to be (presumably still is) limited in that it requires a
patched version of GNU Screen in order to run – not to mention complicated to
install and may not work these days.

Well, there’s always Emacspeak, for Emacs. It works with the GUI version of
Emacs even, so you just have to turn VoiceOver off and just use it. Or you can
use TDSR, a terminal screen reader for the Mac that is miles ahead of VoiceOver.

My needs are somewhat diverse – editing of LaTeX, Markdown, HTML, occasionally
JavaScript, Python, or other programming languages. Integration with Git
revision control is desirable.

Emacs or Vim in a terminal would be fine, were it not for the awkwardness of
using the Mac OS terminal application with Voiceover.

Updates welcome.
