how to add voices to language rotor.
Hi list, I have a question about the language rotor in voiceover. I want to have the option to choose between the US english, australian english, and UK english voices. However, right now it is only showing the US and australian voices. How do I add the UK english one to the mix as well? I tried going to accessibility and voiceover, and selected the language rotor button. I then dragged the british english voice just below the australian one which is first. Still it does not appear as an option. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, John -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: how to add voices to language rotor.
Hi John, There should have been an option for British English on the language rotor. Did you not find it? If I select U.S. English, Australian English, and British English all these options will appear on my language rotor, in addition to my default language, with or without the optional re-ordering. The reason that having the language rotor for voice selection is better than choosing a region is that you won't change the date, time, and telephone number entry formats, or your default currency. In some apps, you end up using your region setting -- such as Safari, which may use Australia for your country search if you select that voice. HTH. Re: how to add voices to language rotor.
Hi Esther, I'm feeling fairly silly about now. I've found the language rotor with its many languages and the reorder buttons. In a note to John, you mentioned selecting certain languages to be in the rotor. Here, all the languages are there. that is in settings, general, accessibility, voice over. But I didn't see something to turn languages on or off or to turn the whole thing on or off so that language selection shows up when you do the rotor gesture. I still get characters and words or, if on a web page, I get the usual items, but no languages. Nor do I understand how to select just those I want. this must e a simple thing that I'm overlooking. mary -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: how to add voices to language rotor.
Hi Mary, If you've found the language rotor under Settings General Accessibility VoiceOver, at the end of the page, just double tap Language Rotor. You'll be on a page where the language options are listed alphabetically. Just double tap to make your selection. The first entry will be Australian English, and if you flick right there will be a reorder button. You can swipe up a couple of times to reach U.S. English. Greek is just below that, followed by Russian, which is announced with the Russian voice. Just double tap any entries you want to add so you'll hear Selected. Exit by double tapping the VoiceOver, back button at the top left. Then, when you're in a text field or on a web page, use the rotor until you hear Language, and swipe up or down till you reach the language you want. If you have a bluetooth keyboard, there are also now hardware keyboard settings under Settings General Keyboard International Keyboards once you double tap the language you've selected. (The page will have both Software and Hardware Keyboard layout options.) HTH. Cheers, Esther On Jun 21, 2010, at 14:15, Mary Otten wrote: Hi Esther, I'm feeling fairly silly about now. Re: how to add voices to language rotor.
Hi Esther, Well, I do feel stupid. I saw all the languages and the reorder buttons, and for some reason, it never occurred to me that I had to double tap to select the language, so convinced was I that the buttons held the key to the problem, as in, double tap and hold and them maybe something could be deleted. the Russian voice is pretty decent, better than I thought it would be, as is the Mexico Spanish voice. Pretty darned cool! I wonder if Ibooks will have foreign language texts eventually; I suspect I'll wait a long time for anything in Russian, though. smile mary -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: how to add voices to language rotor.
Hi Mary, Try this web site for Russian language texts: http://ilibrary.ru/text/976/p.1/index.html I've pointed you to Chekhov's short story, Lady with a Lapdog. I haven't tried searching, but I imagine it would be possible to find Russian texts -- just not current titles, yet!. It will be something to practice using your language rotor on. Re: how to add voices to language rotor.
Thanks a lot for the russian language site, Esther. I may get brave and try the Russian keyboard to see if I have any better luck finding sites than I do trying to guess at transliterations and wondering if they get properly transliterated back into the original language. Haven't typed on a real russian layout keyboard in decades, so it ought to be interesting. Mary -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group.
