Re: my impressions of El Capitan

2015-12-17 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Finder has never remembered my viewing preferences for as long as I can
remember now. I gave up long ago to get them right, and now simply set it up
one time for all the common folders I visit and hope for the best. If I land
in a view I don’t like, I press Command-3 and I’m back in column view, usually
with the sidebar still showing.

As for System Integrity Protection, it probably won’t hurt you as long as
you’re apps (and you) are well-behaved and don’t do anything untoward. In
fact, in many respects, it would be a wonderful thing for the user, because it
would stop apps from doing inappropriate things to your system files (but not
necessarily malware). On the other hand, developers and sysadmins often find
they need to turn it off, because the restrictions just don’t make sense on a
system that is already well-managed and not liable to be at risk, and where
tools in use need to command complete control over the filesystem. I’d really
much prefer to get security that’s under my control and that was actually
verifiable instead of being merely delegated to Apple, but I expect that’s
simply a point of principle to most ordinary users, and since the common Mac
apps have been fixed or are known to work with SIP turned on (TRIM enabling,
backup/cloning apps, and so on), it probably doesn’t matter all that much
anyway.

It's a choice, yes.
Original message:
I am still on Yosemite. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this new way
of interaction simply a choice? If so, that would seem to be the best
of all worlds, since people who like it can have it, and those who
can't don't have to. I can certainly see times when it would be better
to do the new way. And for people coming to the Mac, having to do all
that interaction is kind of a pain in the whatever.

el Capitan works well, the only bug I've found is, in finder windows
such as the hard drive or your home folder, if you hide the tool bar,
that setting does not stick, at least not when using list view. I've
tried the new way of not interacting with items such as tool bars, but,
honestly I prefer the previous way of handling this. When using the new
settings, you have to navigate over every item in a tool bar to get
past it, with the standard setting, you can simply skip what you're not
interested in. I wasn't sure if system integrity protection would cause
any problems, but so far it hasn't been an issue.

Re: my impressions of El Capitan

2015-12-16 Thread matthew dyer
Hi Mike.

After listening to your podcast, I decided to do a clean install of el capitan
and I find that things run much better. I have how ever one question, When
doing the reformat, I selected the main drive not the macintosh HD partition
that was already and select ed. Should I have done so? I found a couple of
problems after doing this. First, I did not see my macintosh HD after
reformatting and had to reboot back to my Bootable Installer. In doing so, I
was then able to see the macintosh, but for some reason I had only 260 GB on my
drive and had to resize the drive to get more space. Any how, I also found
that though I was connected to the network, After signing in to my apple id I
keep seeing the message, item temporally unavailable. The only work around was
to boot to the internet recovery and install ml then upgrade to el capitan
from there. Is there anything I can do to avoid this message in the future?
Thanks.

Matthew

my impressions of El Capitan

2015-12-16 Thread Mike Arrigo
Hey everyone, thanks for the kind words about the upgrade pod cast,
glad you enjoyed it.
el Capitan works well, the only bug I've found is, in finder windows
such as the hard drive or your home folder, if you hide the tool bar,
that setting does not stick, at least not when using list view. I've
tried the new way of not interacting with items such as tool bars, but,
honestly I prefer the previous way of handling this. When using the new
settings, you have to navigate over every item in a tool bar to get
past it, with the standard setting, you can simply skip what you're not
interested in. I wasn't sure if system integrity protection would cause
any problems, but so far it hasn't been an issue.
