If you have four keys to the left of the spacebar, it should be the third one
from the far left. If you have three keys to the left of the spacebar, it's the
one in the middle.

Re: usb keyboard

2020-11-02 Thread Loy Green
On most Windows keyboards the far right key is the control key the next to
left is usually context, and the next to left is windows key and next to
spacebar is the alt key. To the left of the space bar is alt, the next to
left is windows key and sometimes next key to left is a FN key, but not all
keyboards have a FN key then the next to left is control key - Original

mark was indeed the shift of 2 on the Smith-Corona typewriter on which I
first learned to type in the Minneapolis Public Schools back in the
1950's.

PS: We also didn't have a 1 key. Instead we typed lower case l. To make
the exclamation point we typed the apostrophe, backspaced, and added the
period.

Now, how could I forget all that??!

Best,

Janina

RE: Oddities using a PC USB Keyboard with my Mini

2020-05-18 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Janina,

I'm wondering if you have the standard keyboard setup correctly on your mac
mini?

But what would be wrong with using your mac keyboard on the kvm switch
It works with your mac and the windows computer,

Mind you the windows keyboard should
Work fine through the kvm also

Try setting the kvm to start on the mac mini with the windows keyboard
connected and see if you get the error that a non standard keyboard has been
connected.

Then follow the prompts.

Subject: Oddities using a PC USB Keyboard with my Mini

Hi,

I have a standard, very standard (no extra keys) 104-key PC USB keyboard hooked
up to my new Mac Mini. I'm using a StarTech KVM switch to control the Mac, my
Linux desktop, and a Windows laptop with this keyboard.

Working the Mac with this keyboard works mostly, but the exceptions are
significant enough that my full-size Apple BlueTooth keyboard is never too far
away. Specifically:

* The Mac will not accept a password typed in the PC keyboard.
*   I've tried multiple times, but I don't try anymore because it's
* a waste of time. If I need to type my keyboard, I need to use
*   the bt keyboard.

* I cannot type an email address with the PC keyboard because I
* don't seem to have an @ symbol. Shifting 2 on the top row of the
* qwerty gives me the double quote mark that's also available to
* the left of the Enter key. Strange.

Any ideas? I confess the keyboard identification wizzard didn't automatically
associate this device. I couldn't figure how and where to enter the keys it was
looking for to auto identify it. I tried that twice, but am willing to give it
another go if someone has some specific ideas about using that application.

Best,

Janina

Re: Oddities using a PC USB Keyboard with my Mini

2020-05-17 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

A couple of things to mention. First, when using the keyboard detection app,
it usually asks for you first to press the key immediately to the right of the
left shift key. That should be the “z” key. Next it usually asks you to press
the key immediately to the left of the right shift key, which on a North
American keyboard is normally the slash/Question Mark key. After pressing both
those keys, it should announce what kind of keyboard it decided that it was.
With respect to shift-2 giving you the double-quotes, that is because it thinks
that you have a different keyboard than the standard one for some reason. I
can’t remember which one it is, but back in my typewriter days, yes, I’m that
old, there were some typewriter configurations that had the double-quotes above
the 2 and the @ sign was over beside the “l” or somewhere close to that. I
believe that some European keyboard layouts still do that sort of
configuration, although I won’t swear to it.

Lastly, in the old days, back in the 90’s, Macs did not like you connecting the
keyboard and mouse through a hub. It actually often caused really odd problems
with the system and sometimes even damaged things. I’m not sure why, nor if
that is still the case, and, the type of hub that you’re using should not
behave the same anyway. That condition was for actual hubs, not keyboard
switchers like you’re using.

Like Brad mentioned, I suggest that you go back to the basics. That is, plug
the PC keyboard directly into the Mac, use the keyboard detection app to set it
up, then see if it works properly. If it does, then move on to trying it
through your switcher. If it behaves badly, try it in a different port on the
switcher to see if it behaves any better. If you still get no joy, there may
be some incompatibility with that switcher. Again, I’m not sure why, but it’s
possible.

Later…

Basic troubleshooting. Remove all the extraneous variables, and see what
results you get.
Next step would be to try a different USB keyboard and see what happens.

* I cannot type an email address with the PC keyboard because I
* don't seem to have an @ symbol. Shifting 2 on the top row of the
* qwerty gives me the double quote mark that's also available to
* the left of the Enter key. Strange.

Any ideas? I confess the keyboard identification wizzard didn't
automatically associate this device. I couldn't figure how and where to
enter the keys it was looking for to auto identify it. I tried that
twice, but am willing to give it another go if someone has some specific
ideas about using that application.

Best,

3rd party USB keyboard, issues changing modifiers`

2017-08-03 Thread Nickus de Vos
Hi all
I've been using generic 3rd party USB keyboards on my iMac for a long
time without any issues, swopping around the "option" and "command"
keys wworked as expected each time I had to do it after plugging in a
new or different keyboard.

I'm having issues doing this on my 2015 MacBook pro though, yesterday
I connected a external USB keyboard to it for the first time, and for
some reason the modifier change doesn't work. I do exactly the same as
on the iMac, go swop them around inside modifier keys under Keyboard
preferences but it doesn't work.

I make sure that I'm selecting the USB keyboard when swopping the
modifiers and then press "Ok" but it doesn't change, if I go back in
to the Modifier keys diolog it's set the way I changed it, but it
doesn't take effect.

Both my machines are running the latest Mac OS so that can't be the
issue, iMac is a 2013 and MBP is a 2015.

Any ideas?

USB keyboard issues

2014-02-19 Thread Jenine Stanley
Let me see if this message goes through this time around.

I'm installing a USB keyboard on the iMac for my spouse. When we plugged it in
the first time, the keyboard identification utility came up and I followed the
instructions.

It did recognize the keyboard but none of the function keys spoke when using
the VO K command to identify them. Only the F12 and VO F8 keys seemed to work.

On the Apple bluetooth keyboard all keys worked as usual.

The USB keyboard I was installing works on either Windows or Mac and the other
keys for Mac identified readily and work fine.

It seems as if any Usb keyboard I install now has this issue.

Any wisdom out there about this?

USB keyboard issues

2014-02-19 Thread Jenine Stanley
I'm trying to install a USB keyboard and when it is connected and I complete
the keyboard installation utility, the function keys no longer announce
themselves as they do with the Apple Bluetooth keyboard.

This seems then to carry over to any USB keyboard I attach. I then did the
really stupid thing of turning on the Apple Bluetooth keyboard and let's just
say that things went downhill from there.

All has been restored but I'm still curious about the function keys not working
or speaking as they do with the Apple keyboard. All other Apple keys work fine.
The USB keyboard I'm attaching works with either Windows or Mac.

Amazon basics USB Keyboard Not recognized on Login Screen

2013-07-17 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

Does anyone else have an Amazon Basics uSB keyboard? I have to use my Braille
display to log on, because the keyboard is not recognized. Sometimes it takes a
couple of minutes after I log in for it to kick in. Then I have to go into
keyboard preferences and change keyboard type.

This is strange, because when I first got the keyboard a couple of weeks ago,
it worked fine.

Any ideas?

Locating the function key on a USB keyboard

2010-12-02 Thread Marc Workman
Hi all,

I bought my first Mac today, and I've run into a snag turning VO on.

I tried command F5, but it only made a bonking noise. My guess is that the
function keys are controlling hardware, and I need to press the function key
plus command F5, but I don't know which key is the function key. I'm using a
full size USB keyboard that I bought along with the Mac mini today.

If you can tell me where the function key is, or if you have any other
suggestions, I would be very appreciative.

Best,

Marc

Hi, Marc,

You can use the control key with command-f5 to activate Voiceover. Also, you
can go to the System Preferences/Keyboard pane and select the use function
keys as standard ... checkbox.

Re: Locating the function key on a USB keyboard

2010-12-02 Thread Scott Howell
The function key is located in the six-pack of keys on the full-size keyboard.
It is the first key in the six pack and is in the same location as the insert
key on a PC keyboard.
