Title:
Add version numbers to language packs

Status in Mahara:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  As I touched on in https://bugs.launchpad.net/mahara/+bug/1180544 ,
there's currently no way for a user looking at the langpacks site (
http://langpacks.mahara.org/ ) to tell whether there's been an update
  to their language pack.

Therefore, it would be useful if we added version numbers to the
language packs. These could be placed in lang/langconfig.php,
  something like this:

$string['release'] = '1.7.1'; // The Mahara release number this langpack was
created for
$string['version'] = '2013052700'; // Incremented on each new release of the
langpack, using the current date.

And the name of the langpack file could be changed to something along
  the lines of "vi-1.7_STABLE-2013052700.tar.gz".

A related idea would be to have specific langpack releases tied to
Mahara minor version releases, to support the case where a language
string's name is changed in a minor version. In that case, you
wouldn't want to upgrade your langpacks before your Mahara version has
been upgraded. In that case you'd want langpack releases for each
minor version, as well as maybe a "nightly" langpack release.

  vi-1.7.3.tar.tgz
  vi-1.7.4.tar.tgz
  vi-1.7_STABLE-2013052700.tar.gz

Title:
Untie "Allow public pages" from "Allow public profiles"

Status in Mahara:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This bug report is about two site settings (under "Site options ->
  General settings")

  1. Allow public pages

  2. Allow public profiles

Currently, the behavior of these is tied together. If "Allow public
pages" is turned on, it forces "Allow public profiles" to be on. If
"Allow public pages" is turned off, then and only then, the admin can
toggle "Allow public profiles" separately. As of Bug 814328, this
behavior is reflected with Javascript that grays out "Allow public
profiles" when it is being overridden.

However, there's no ironclad reason why these two settings have to be
tied together like this. There is at least one case on the forums, of
a user wanting to allow public pages but *not* public profiles:
  https://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=6431=27235

Frankly, I think the reason these are tied together in the first place
is a bug, not a feature.

Title:
  Elasticsearch choking on non-ASCII characters

Status in Mahara:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
In 15.10 I've added code to "quarantine" records that Elasticsearch
won't index. That is, if Elasticsearch errors out while processing a
batch of records, then I re-try each record individually. And if it
errors out while processing one of those individual records, I mark
the record as quarantined, and keep it in the
  search_elasticsearch_queue table.

I've backported that to one of our large 15.04 sites, and since then
I've taken a look at the data in the records that have caused
Elasticsearch to choke. They all contain non-ASCII characters, i.e.
Unicode characters. These can be as simple as "e with an accent over
it", all the way up to exotic ones like emoji and the Unicode snowman.

I was not able to replicate this when testing on my local machine, but
it is certainly in place on our production servers, and bugs such as
Bug 1408577 make me think it's probably also present on some other
  servers as well.

  a LMS to Mahara.

Between Moodle and Mahara, with the LTI option "We create users"
activated, a user is created when jumping for the first time from the
  LMS to Mahara.

At the moment only the email, first name, last name are pushed from
Moodle into the user's Mahara profile.

I wish other information from the Moodle profile could be pushed such
as the profile picture, address,… as long as the LTI protocole allows

Bug description:
When there are multiple institutions/tenants on a mahara and one of
the tenants decides to add the 'None' auth method to their institution
it causes havoc for users on all institutions as if they accidentally
enter their login details wrong they get logged in to institution with
'None' set as a new user rather than their normal institution/account.

Things that need to be changed to avoid this problem:

  1) When an institution tries to add the 'None' auth option it needs to
check to see if there are any other institutions present and only
allow it if institution count = 1

  2) Conversely if the only institution uses 'None' auth then you
shouldn't be allowed to add a new institution until that auth is
  removed

  3) And when you are able to add "None" you should probably get some
prominent message with "Do you really want to do this? You know, it
means that anybody will be able to log in without any authorization"

Also as part of this change it would be very good to add a ctime (and
maybe userid) field to the auth_instance table to record when one
adds/edits auth details to see when things changed as this human error
can cause big problems for users.

Licenses: Once you've selected a license, you can't go back to "None"

Status in Mahara:
  In Progress

Bug description:
While testing out Bug 1279526, I noticed that you can't change an
uploaded file from a particular license to "No License". This may have
been by design, with the idea that "No License" was a temporary thing
until you pick a license. But with Bug 1279526 we're changing the
wording of "No License" to make it clear that if you're not choosing a
particular license, then the default copyright rules apply, so it
becomes more necessary to be able to switch to that.

  To replicate:

  1. Go to "Administration -> Configure Site -> General Settings", and
  enable "License metadata"

  2. Go to "Content -> Files" and upload a file.

  3. Once the file is uploaded, click the pencil "edit" button to open
its editing form. It should be at "No license" or the equivalent.
Change it to "Creative Commons Attribution 4.0"

  4. Click "Save changes"

  5. Now click the pencil "edit" button again. Change the License back
to "No license" or the equivalent.

  6. Again click "Save changes"

  7. Again click the pencil "edit" button.

Expected result: You see "No license" or the equivalent as the license
  selection.

Actual result: You see "Creative Commons Attribution 4.0" as the
  license selection.

And I disable the following switches:
   | Privacy statement |

# Checking the switches held the setting
And the following fields match these values:

   | Contact us | 0 |

As part of the process of tidying up the behat tests, this
functionality should be removed from this test and a new test created
  called footer_settings.feature.

The new test should have 2 scenarios, one to check the settings as
above as admin, but also to check that the selected footer settings
are displayed on the homepage to a user.

The second scenario should check that when the user clicks on the
footer links, correct content is displayed, specifically that the
headings are not repeated (Bug #1683551)

Title:
small fixes to some behat tests

Status in Mahara:
  In Progress

Bug description:
There are some badly formatted tests, with background steps in the
  scenario:

  test/behat/features/user_content/search_users_by_share_pages.feature
  compare with test/behat/features/social/sharedwithme.feature.
Could this be a scenario in the other test?
   - regardless, the format should be changed. This is not testing adding
pages, so add the pages in the background using the generic format data.

  test/behat/features/social/modified_date.feature
   - put background into background.
   - is this already covered in
test/behat/features/site_content/shared_views_to_group.feature?
   - if not, should it be combined.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1722180] Re: Unable to edit shortname of copied group

2017-10-21 Thread Kristina Hoeppner
I guess if we want to ensure that groups created via web services are
treated differently, that should go for other settings in the group then
as well and not just the short name as you can also control other
settings.

Groups created via CSV files could be a bit trickier as there are two use cases:
1. Permanent management of groups via CSV file -> These should not have group
short names changed.
2. Initial upload of groups via CSV but no further intention of managing them
via CSV -> These could have group short names changed.

In regard to the CSV file groups, I would say that we can expect
administrators to download the CSV files from Mahara before making
changes to the groups as that is the status quo on the site. Otherwise,
it might get too complicated to manage.

Status in Mahara:

Bug description:

exceeded (by large file upload for example) no error is triggered, as

  called.

This is partly related to bugs:
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/mahara/+bug/633760
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/mahara/+bug/547505

Given that this error is triggered by PHP prior to processing the
code, it can't be catch through exception. As forums suggests, it may
worth using error_get_last() and grep result for "PHP Warning: POST
  Content-Length of" string.

SAML plugin automatic refresh of metadata support

Status in Mahara:
  In Progress

Bug description:
The SAML plugin currently supports the addition of multiple IDP
providers and a one time upload of the XML for that IDP, however it
would be useful to provide it with the link to the IDP providers
metadata (in xml form) and have it automatically fetch the metadata
for the site on a regular basis, so if the IDP changes it's metadata
SSO will automatically repair itself on the next fetch.

We can do this by integrating the MetaData refresh plugin from the
embedded simplesamlphp in the Mahara saml plugin and triggering it
  from the Mahara cron.

Bug description:

MySQL database as we have in Mahara does not support special
  characters.

In master branch and mysql DB, I added a text block to a page with text
"Some characters, like '푅' or emoticons '', produce the error."

when displaying the page I had this error:
[WAR] 72 (blocktype/lib.php:685) unserialize(): Error at offset 18 of
48 bytes
(complete error log in
http://paste.wgtn.cat-it.co.nz/15069e#JTBigIqmZagCFwOVF58qww)

in the DB block_instance table, the data it is trying to unserialize
  "a:5:{s:4:"text";s:74:"Some characters, like '"
looks like the it ets cut off on the special character position when is saved
in the DB

Moodle has a fix for same problem:

"UTF-8 is a character encoding that most websites use. It encodes each of the
1,112,064 valid code points. To store all of this information, four bytes is
required. The most popular values are in the three byte region. MySQL by
default only uses a three byte encoding and so values in the four byte range
(eg. Asian characters and Emojis) can not be stored.
MySQL does provide full four byte UTF-8 support, but it requires certain
database settings to be configured."

I tried using this approach by installing Mahara with utf8mb4

create database `mahara-master` character set utf8mb4 collate
  utf8mb4_unicode_ci

If we create the database with this char set, we wont be able to
install Mahara, as it only supports utf8. Even if we remove this
restriction, we will have this error:

mysqli error: [1071: Specified key was too long; max key length is
  3072 bytes]

Title:
SAML Service Provider Metadata link should be hidden if SSPHP is not
  installed

Status in Mahara:
  In Progress

Bug description:
Not a huge thing, but it will make a page a little bit cleaner.

  If on the page
  /admin/extensions/pluginconfig.php?plugintype=auth=saml we
  see message like

The SimpleSAMLPHP library's "autoloader" file was not found at
/var/www/site/auth/saml/extlib/simplesamlphp/vendor/autoload.php.
Make sure you install SimpleSAMLphp via "make ssphp" and the file is readable.

we probably need to get rid of Metadata link which doesn't work anyway
in this case and just displays a broken page.

SMTP port isn't set when no SMTP user is specified

Status in Mahara:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  Hello,

Mahara does not set a custom SMTP port in case no SMTP user name is
  specified.

The fix is trivial: in file lib/user.php move line 762 to 756, so the
port is set right after setting the host outside of if-clause.

  Cheers,
  Dimitri.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1725193] Re: Unable to change SmartEvidence framework for copied collection

2017-10-21 Thread Kristina Hoeppner
Hi Gordon,

Currently, you can unlink a SamrtEvidence framework from a page by
deleting the annotation blocks that are on the pages in the collection.
Then you can choose a different framework.

This behavior is due to the fact that an annotation is linked to a
specific standard element and thus can't be viewed without it.

I can imagine that we include an option when copying a collection with a
framework to ask whether to include the annotations and the feedback or
not.

A cross framework option that you add a new framework but reference
feedback from another framework may be tricky if the original framework
or collection is deleted. It might be better in this case to link to the
old collection and reference feedback by linking to it.

Title:
Unable to change SmartEvidence framework for copied collection

Status in Mahara:
  Opinion

Bug description:
  Hello,
I've been experimenting with the Smart Evidence functionality. One of the
things our staff want to be able to do is have different criteria at different
stages of the student journey (eg 1st year matrix is not the same as final year
one). The obvious way to achieve that is to create separate matrix files and
associate them with a relevant collection of template pages for each stage. The
problem arises if a student wants to reuse a page from earlier in their
academic career if feedback has been given on the original page.
I thought that making a copy of the original collection and associating it
with the new framework would be straightforward, but it give the error:
You cannot change the framework. The following pages have evidence connected
to this framework: 'BSc ePortfolio - Home Page v.2' 'BSc ePortfolio - Asset 1
v.2' 'BSc ePortfolio - Asset 1 v.2' 'BSc ePortfolio - Asset 2 v.2'

The same issue would arise if students are asked to submit portfolio
pages as evidence for more than one course subject. I'd propose that
what is needed is a way to unlink the existing framework from a COPY
of a page (I'm happy the original should remain associated with the
old matrix) so that the evidence presented for one purpose can be
reused elsewhere. There are reasons either way for including any
feedback comments that were created as a result of interactions with
the previous version, or wiping it completely. For flexibility, I'd
favour including the feedback on the copied page (students might
reflect in year 2 about feedback they got in year 1) and allow users
to delete the blocks if they want, but not change (edit) the content.

  Regards, Gordon.
