Mark, Thank you so much! That particular FAQ helped, and now I can see my lists again! :-) Yes, they were appearing in the list info, and all were set public. I have only a single domain, so I set VIRTUAL_HOST_OVERVIEW = Off in mm_cfg.py and that did it. Thanks again! [Mailman-Users] Lists disappearing after 2.1.17 upgrade
Hello. My site isn't yet using Mailman, but have an installation with some test lists. I tried to find an answer in the archives, but no luck... Today I upgraded Mailman from 2.1.15 to 2.1.17. And my public lists just disappeared! I mean, when I go to the page: http://www.unicode.org/mailman/listinfo/ I see only one test list that was made months ago. [Mailman-Users] lists lost labels (and footers) after moving mailman to a new server
Hi, We have recently upgraded our web server to one with bigger capacity. Actual moving occurred earlier today and was done by our hosting provider (since we don't have access to root to our dedicated server). Moving involved transferring all services active, including our mailman lists. Once moving has been completed we can see the lists have been actually moved, apparently correctly, configuration parameters remain the same as they were before, but, curiously enough, the messages are distributed without the usual label and without the footer, even though both label and footer are well defined in the configuration page and were working nicely in the old server configuration. According to the hosting provider they transferred everything to the new server, including all parameters of the list. They have been investigating the cause of these missing labels and footers but so far could not find any obvious cause. Things that I have tried so far: 1) Deleting the label, saving parameters, re-installing the label, saving parameters. Doesn't work, messages continue to be posted without label. 2) I created a new list in the new server, created a label for it, and, in this case, messages are posted with label in this newly created list in the new server location I am using mailman 2.1.11 I have been searching for similar posts before posting this to the list. I couldn't find any. Thanks Mark, yes I am referring to subject_prefix (and footers) and I am using only the web interface. Good suggestion about mailman pointing to a different config file, but that would be strange since everything worked before (regarding labels and footers) in the old server. Will transmit your suggestions to our hosting. Things that I have tried so far: 1) Deleting the label, saving parameters, re-installing the label, saving parameters. Doesn't work, messages continue to be posted without label. I would not expect this to change anything. Presumably you are changing these things via the web admin interface. Is this using the same configuration file (lists/LISTNAME/config.pck) as the running Mailman? I.e. is the web server pointing at a different file, maybe a backup made during migration or even the old server? 2) I created a new list in the new server, created a label for it, and, in this case, messages are posted with label in this newly created list in the new server location So Mailman is properly processing it. Thus, if it exists in the web interface, it should be processed unless the web server and the Mailman qrunners are using different copies of the list's config.pck. Thanks for help and suggestions. Re: [Mailman-Users] Lists created via web admin seem to be entirelyseparate from lists created from command line
All of this says that your web server does not point to the same mailman instance that Postfix points to and that you are accessing from the command line. Check the path in your Mailman ScriptAlias in your web server config. Yes the ScriptAlias is pointing to /usr/lib/cgi-bin/. At that location I see the mailman executables which correspond to the various web functions, as expected. I searched for other instances of these same executables using locate, and all I found was a location where three executables with the same name (admin, confirm, and subscribe) at /var/lib/mailman/scripts. I don't know if these locations are equivalent or not. These are the locations where the Ubuntu ppa installer placed them. I realize this list is not the place to ask about Ubuntu-specific installation, but I haven't received a reply on the Ubuntu forum so far. I need to see where postfix is pointing. As I understand it, it's the mailman entry in postfix's master.cf that determines this. There I have the entry as specified in the mailman documentation: mailman unix - n n - - pipe flags=FR user=list argv=/usr/lib/mailman/bin/postfix-to-mailman.py ${nexthop} ${user} Per man page for master(5) this is supposed to mean that executabe 'mailman' is present relative to the path specified by postfix param queue_directory. The value of that variable (as determined by running postconf queue_directory) is /var/spool/postfix. There is no executable named 'mailman' at that location, so I'm not clear on how postfix is invoking mailman on incoming mail, but that seems to be where the problem lies. -Mark -- Mailman-Users mailing list Mailman-Users@python.org http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/mailman-users Mailman FAQ: http://wiki.list.org/x/AgA3 Security Policy: http://wiki.list.org/x/QIA9 Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/mailman-users%40python.org/ Unsubscribe: http://mail.python.org/mailman/options/mailman-users/archive%40jab.org

The files in /usr/lib/cgi-bin/ are compiled binary wrappers (so they can be SETGID) that do nothing more than validate the real GID and then invoke the python script. I am however surprised that the scripts are in /var and not /usr. If you do 'strings' on the files in /usr/lib/cgi-bin/, you should see the path to the scripts directory they're using. E.g. Thanks for all the info. I've narrowed down the locations, but I'm still not quite there. I updated the locate database, and then using locate and find, I see that the only place any lists are defined is at /var/lib/mailman/lists The wrapper executables in the directory pointed to by apache's ScriptAlias for /mailman are pointing to /var/lib/mailman/scripts. However, that location is actually a sym link pointing to /usr/lib/mailman/scripts (which is where you said you expected them to be) This surprises me because when I create a list using the web interface, its file does not appear in /var/lib/mailman/lists (or anywhere). The list files only appear in that directory when I create them from the command line. But the above seems to indicate that the web app is pointing to the same mailman instance where the scripts eventually get written. So then the remaining question is which mailman is postfix invoking? In the postfix log file, when an e-mail comes in, I see Mar 13 17:24:59 mal-s5610f postfix/pipe[20980]: 1F8E618006D: to=testlist2-requ...@lists.midnightjava.net, relay=mailman, delay=0.33, delays=0.12/0.01/0/0.2, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (delivered via mailman service) I don't think that tells us the location, so I then looked at the script being invoked via the master.cf entry (the unsupported file postfix-to-mailman.py). I'm not a python programmer, but I understand the basics. So I'm not sure I correctly resolved the location of the mailman executable. What I see is import paths mm_pgm = os.path.join(paths.prefix, 'mail', 'mailman') I don't see any reference to module paths in the python API, so I'm assuming that's a custom module, and that the line above is resolving the path mail/mailman relative to the path pointed to by the mailman config variable 'prefix'. If this is so, then that's 'var/lib/mailman' as that's the value set for 'prefix' in Defaults.py, and it's not overridden in mm_cfg.py. (As an aside, I put in some print and sys.stderr.write statements to get the value of paths.prefix, thinking they would show up in either postfix or mailman log files, but they do not.) So if my assumption above is correct, then both postfix and apache are pointing to the same instance of mailman. And when I create a list from the command line I use /var/lib/mailman/bin/newlist, which is a sym link to /usr/lib/mailman/bin/newlist, so this is also the same mailman instance. So perhaps my assumption above can be corrected? One other thing I'm going to try is checking whether apache is configured to allow following of sym links for the ScriptAlias location. The wrapper executables there are not sym links, but they're pointing to the python scripts they execute via sym links, so perhaps I need the option enabled for following sym links. Otherwise the mystery remains. -Mark -- Mailman-Users mailing list Mailman-Users@python.org http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/mailman-users Mailman FAQ: http://wiki.list.org/x/AgA3 Security Policy: http://wiki.list.org/x/QIA9 Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/mailman-users%40python.org/ Unsubscribe: http://mail.python.org/mailman/options/mailman-users/archive%40jab.org

Web create is apparently creating lists because it either creates the list or returns an error. If it succeeds, the list's lists/LISTNAME/config.pck file is created somewhere. You know the great thing about the Internet is that when you do something dumb, you get to share it with lots of other people, and have them join you in running in the circles you created. You cracked the code. I was hitting an entirely different web server. I set up Mailman and Postfix on my wife's Mac originally, and before I got the two working together I decided to host them on my Ubuntu system instead. I have two NAT'd ports for web access, going to the Mac and the Ubuntu system, and guess which one I was hitting until now. When I go to the right port, I see all the lists and users I created previously. Sorry for the error, but at least I learned some things about Mailman-Postfix interop. I just installed Mailman 2.1.14 and got it integrated with Postfix, on Ubuntu 11.04. I can create a list via the web admin interface, and add members to it. But no such list exists if I run bin/list_lists. If I run bin/newlist without creating a list via the web admin interface, I can send mail to the list, but when I try to administer it via the web interface, it doesn't exist. If I then create the list at the web interface, there is no connection between the web instance and the instance reachable via e-mail. That is, I add a member via the web interface, but when I send mail from that address, it's sent to the list moderator for vetting because it supposedly came from a non-member. And in similar fashion I get an e-mail at the list-admin address, telling me that I have a post to disposition. But when I click on the link in the e-mail, the Mailman web app says there are no pending requests. I've created three lists from scratch, including the sitelist, and I get this behavior each time. The '-- -v' is optional and causes the command to report the web_page_url and host_name settings for each list after they are set. (#5.7.17) This has nothing to do with Mailman per se. This is an issue with the incoming MTA that receives the mail for delivery to mailman. There are three possibilities that I see. The first possibility is that list creation requires a manual 'alias' installation by the host and they have not done that, and the problem has nothing to do with the '.', but rather is due to this being a new list and the mail delivery aliases for it not being installed. The second possibility is that they have some automated way of installing aliases or recognizing list names which is confused by the '.'. The third possibility is the MTA is configured to treat a '.' in the local part in some special way. -- Mark Sapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED]The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, Californiabetter use your sense - B. [Mailman-Users] Lists not Sending
I'm running into a problem today with posting and receiving through lists. This morning posts to the list were being sent and received fine, and now the posts are being sent through the email client correctly (I checked with a non-list email address), but nothing is being posted to the list. I've been back through the settings and nothing seems to be off on the list. Nothing is in the archives, and nothing is being held for moderation. Thanks. Symptoms in my case: a new member (added with the command line utility add_members) is subscribed properly, the associated mail address gets a welcome message (so far so good), but mail to the mailing list arrives at Mailman, but is not distributed to the new user. I tried adding a second user, but the same problem. Have posts ever been delivered to any user? If not, the most likely Mailman-related problem is that due to your settings, the posts are being held. Have you checked the moderation interface? More likely IMO is that Mailman never received the posts because of failure to start Mailman's qrunners properly, or misconfiguration of the MTA. I have checked a number of things from the FAQ to diagnose the problem but I see nothing unusual. No traces in the logs directory. And I'm sure Mailman has accepted the mail for further processing (I can see from the mail logs). On the contrary, if Mailman isn't writing to its logs and there's nothing in the qfiles directories, it seems very likely that Mailman has never received the messages. Are there entries in logs/qrunner showing that all qrunners are working? Mine says: Oct 18 17:14:29 2006 (15648) ArchRunner qrunner started. Oct 18 17:14:30 2006 (15649) BounceRunner qrunner started. Oct 18 17:14:33 2006 (15650) CommandRunner qrunner started. Oct 18 17:14:35 2006 (15653) NewsRunner qrunner started. Oct 18 17:14:35 2006 (15655) VirginRunner qrunner started. Oct 18 17:14:35 2006 (15651) IncomingRunner qrunner started. Oct 18 17:14:35 2006 (15654) OutgoingRunner qrunner started. Oct 18 17:14:36 2006 (15656) RetryRunner qrunner started. Does ps show that they are still running? Fairly early in message processing, Mailman logs to either logs/post (showing that the post was accepted) or to logs/vette (indicating that the post was held or rejected, and why). When the post is delivered, there will be an entry in logs/smtp for each batch of deliveries (usually one per remote host, or one per user if personalization or VERP is being used). Are there really no logs at all? If there are logs, what do they say? How can I trace these messages in Mailman? I looked in the qfiles/ subdirectories, but no files there... Have you checked your MTA's queue? Based on your statements that there is nothing in the logs and nothing in the queues, I have to believe they're never getting to Mailman at all. Is there any logging/debugging that can be turned on No; the logs described plus the qfiles contain all the information that you should need for problems related to the delivery pipeline. Or is there any utility to quickly see what messages are in the Mailman queue for processing? To see what's there, I just use ls -R /var/lib/mailman/qfiles (YMMV depending on where Mailman is installed). To examine the qfiles themselves, use cd /var/lib/mailman; bin/show_qfiles qfiles/in/* (again, the cd directory will vary according to your installation). -- Mailman-Users mailing list Mailman-Users@python.org http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/mailman-users Mailman FAQ: http://www.python.org/cgi-bin/faqw-mm.py Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/mailman-users%40python.org/ Unsubscribe: http://mail.python.org/mailman/options/mailman-users/archive%40jab.org Security Policy: http://www.python.org/cgi-bin/faqw-mm.py?req=showamp;file=faq01.027.htp

Assuming a standard configuration where the MTA delivers to the mail/mailman wrapper. 1) The MTA pipes the message to the wrapper which passes it to the scripts/post script which in turn places it in the qfiles/in queue. Nothing is logged in Mailman, but the MTA normally logs the delivery. 2) IncomingRunner picks up the queue entry from qfiles/in and passes it through a pipeline of handlers (GLOBAL_PIPELINE - defined in Defaults.py, possibly modified in mm_cfg.py - unless the list defines a pipeline attribute to override it). The initial handlers check header_filter_rules, look for an Approved: header and possibly generate an autoresponse. The next set of handlers checks for moderation and other holds and does content filtering, emergency moderation and topic flagging. Any of these handlers can raise exceptions to request IncomingRunner to discard, reject or hold the message at that point. Discards and holds are logged in the vette log. Rejects are not logged, but result in a reject message to the poster. Any other exceptions cause the message to be moved to qfiles/shunt and the exception is logged in the error log. The next set of handlers determines the recipient addresses and possibly removes and/or modifies some message headers. Then handlers add the message to lists/listname/digest.mbox if the list is digestable (and possibly trigger a digest on size), add the message to qfiles/archive for processing by ArchRunner, possibly add the message to qfiles/news for processing by NewsRunner, update the list's last_post_time, send an acknowledgement to the poster if requested, and add the message to qfiles/out for processing by OutgoingRunner. 3) ArchRunner picks up the queue entry from qfiles/archive and adds it the the list's archive. 4)NewsRunner picks up the queue entry from qfiles/news and delivers it to Usenet. 5)OutgoingRunner picks up the queue entry from qfiles/out and calls SMTPDirect to deliver it to the outgoing MTA via SMTP. SMTPDirect logs posts to the post log and logs a bit more detail to the smtp log. Any SMTP failures are logged to the smtp-failure log and treated as bounces or queued for retry as appropriate. 6) Any unanticipated exceptions in any of the runners cause the message to be moved to qfiles/shunt and the exception to be logged in the error log. -- Mark Sapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, Californiabetter use your sense - B. To elaborate on Rolf's question about how Mailman processes a post. Thanks _very much_ for the detailed explanation of the inner working of Mailman. I really appreciate your detailed description! Now here's the problem, I think. The MTA logs the message as being delivered to Mailman (via the wrapper script $MAILMANDIR/mailman/bin/mailman), so from the MTA's point of view it's done. Now, as the sent message cannot be found under qfiles, and as none of the $MAILMANDIR/logs/* files is modified, it seems as if the message disappeared in a black hole. Is there no way to enable debugging in the wrapper script? It would show the first action of Mailman, I assume. OK, thus only after the message has been delivered to at least one subscriber (or the first MTA in the chain of delivery to at least one subscriber). Yes, the first MTA, namely the one on localhost, port 25 unless overridden by SMTPHOST/SMTPPORT in mm_cfg.py. There is no guarantee this MTA has sent the message further. You need to refer the the MTA's logs for that. In my case there were no entries in smtp nor in smtp-failure. So the message didn't get that far. 1) The MTA pipes the message to the wrapper which passes it to the scripts/post script which in turn places it in the qfiles/in queue. Nothing is logged in Mailman, but the MTA normally logs the delivery. There are at least two possibilities here. 1) The post was rejected (not held or discarded). A reject is not logged, but there should be an associated entry in Mailman's smtp log with a mailman generated message-id and 1 recipient for the reject message sent to the poster. 2) The wrapper is for a different Mailman installation with a different qfiles directory and probably no qrunners running and probably different log files too. The wrapper itself (I would expect it to be located at $MAILMANDIR/mail/mailman, not $MAILMANDIR/mailman/bin/mailman) has the path to the scripts/ directory compiled in and doesn't have any debug switches. It will invoke the scripts/post script and presumably this happens OK or it will return a failure status to the MTA which would be logged by the MTA. You can add debugging to the scripts/post script. If you look at this script, you will see that it already detects a missing or invalid list name from the wrapper and writes to stderr which is logged to both the post and error logs. You could add some more output, say by adding the last two lines of inq = get_switchboard(mm_cfg.INQUEUE_DIR) inq.enqueue(sys.stdin.read(), listname=listname, tolist=1, _plaintext=1) print sys.stderr, 'Post for %s queued in %s' \ % (listname, mm_cfg.INQUEUE_DIR) If you don't see this in the post and error logs, you are not looking at the right installation or (third possibility) the right log files. Look in mm_cfg.py/Defaults.py for the definition of LOG_DIR and anything else used in its definition. This can be tricky. LOG_DIR is defined in Defaults.py in terms of VAR_PREFIX. If VAR_PREFIX is redefined in mm_cfg.py, this will not redefine LOG_DIR as LOG_DIR was already defined in Defaults.py in terms of the Defaults.py definition of VAR_PREFIX. -- Mark Sapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, Californiabetter use your sense - B. Also look in the smtp-failure log to see if there are any failed recipients of the message. Assuming this is OK, the problem is outbound of mailman. They should check MTA logs to see that the message is received from Mailman It may be received in more that one transaction with anywhere between 1 and several hundred recipients per transaction depending on Mailman settings, but they should add up to the number Mailman reports in the smtp log. Then only the MTA can say what it did with the message(s) after that. A user with a gmail account will never receive a copy of her own post because gmail sees it as a duplicate of the outgoing message in the 'sent' folder and discards it. This is a gmail feature. People have complained to gmail, so far AFAIK without any relief or known workaround. As far as cPanel is concerned, as Brad says, we can only guess. They modify Mailman in significant ways, and they don't share those mods with us. Someone once pressed them referring to the GPL and they shared some of their virtual hosting mods, but they have mods in several areas that we have never seen (although we have seen some of the negative consequences). Needless to say, this creates a very bad situation when we try to help cPanel users, since unless the issue is something we specifically recognize, we don't know whether it is a general Mailman issue or a cPanel issue, and if it's the latter we can't get under the hood to do a more detailed diagnosis. -- Mark Sapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, Californiabetter use your sense - B. I should point out that there are other cPanel users on this list, and they may be able to give you some assistance that we cannot. We'll continue to try to help as best we can, but we're going to be limited in what we can do. Unfortunately, we're dependant on the rest of the cPanel/Mailman community to help pitch in here, because the assistance we can provide is very limited. -- Brad Knowles [EMAIL PROTECTED], Consultant Author LinkedIn Profile: http://tinyurl.com/y8kpxu Slides from Invited Talks: http://tinyurl.com/tj6q4 -- Mailman-Users mailing list Mailman-Users@python.org http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/mailman-users Mailman FAQ: http://www.python.org/cgi-bin/faqw-mm.py Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/mailman-users%40python.org/ Unsubscribe: http://mail.python.org/mailman/options/mailman-users/archive%40jab.org Security Policy: http://www.python.org/cgi-bin/faqw-mm.py?req=showamp;file=faq01.027.htp
[Mailman-Users] Lists stop working
Did you ever find a solution to this issue? I realize that this is a really old posting: I send an eMail to one of the lists, I can see in my /var/log/maillog; Jun 10 11:27:03 osiris sendmail[2756]: h5A9R392002756: from=Niklas.Nikitin at xxx http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/mailman-users , size=502, class=0, nrcpts=1, msgid=5.2.1.1.2.20030610112857.00b9b740 at xxx http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/mailman-users , proto=ESMTP, daemon=MTA, relay=cassini.xxx [193.10.220.37] Jun 10 11:27:03 osiris sendmail[2757]: h5A9R392002756: to=|/usr/local/mailman/mail/mailman post nicke-test, ctladdr=nicke-test at xxx http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/mailman-users (8/0), delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=prog, pri=30704, dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent that the server is receiving the eMail and is forwarding it to Mailman. But in Mailman's logs I will not find any information that it has received the eMail and no eMail is sent to the members on the list. If I dump all members of the list to a file, remove the list, create the list again and add all members, the list is working again for a while, and then it repeats again. but I've run into a very similar problem with two mailing lists that are managed using the current release of Mailman. The first symptom was that messages sent to the mailing lists were not distributed to the list, and did not show up in the list archive. After my ISP reinstalled Mailman, messages to the list started to show up in the list archive again. But the messages were still not distributed to members of the list. We found that if we add a new user, then a message to the list *is* delivered to that new user, but still not to any of the existing users. If the *new* user posts a message, that message appears in the list archive and the message is delivered to the entire mailing list. There doesn't seem to be a way to dump and reload the mailing list that preserves all per-list-member configuration options, so if possible, we'd like to avoid that workaround. Especially if it only works temporarily. Any insight / help / pointers appreciated. [Mailman-Users] Lists nested in other lists
I know I have seen some documentation on being able to have lists nested in other lists. I can't seem to locate it now. What I want to do is have someone subscribe to a list such as - hockey player - and by virtue of subscribing to that list they are part of the Athletics list. [Mailman-Users] lists within lists
Hi all, We're running a site with a mailman 2.1.5 configuration with 40-50 lists on it, and some lists have a list address as a subscriber to the list.. ie the general@ list might have a bunch of individual addresses and an otherlist@ address also as a member, (and the otherlist@ also contains individual addresses) So, what happens, is that when an email is sent to the general@ list it gets subject modified [General] as normal, but the people on the otherlist@ also get rewritten so they get mail that appears as [Otherlist][General] Subject line.. My question is, is there a way to have mailman not include the 2nd subject tag when posting to the general@ list (for the otherlist@ subscribers)? but also still retain it when sending explicitly to otherlist@ Cheers Spyro -- This message and its attachments may contain legally privileged or confidential information. At this point, you can look at Mailman's qrunner log and possibly see entries about runners stopping and being restarted until the limit is reached. If so, there will also be a small bit of information as to why (what signal or condition) caused the runner to stop. There may also be something in Mailman's 'error' log from the same time. [Mailman-Users] Lists
Hi, I am new to List Servers, and I have a question. I am currently working on a school district list server. For some reason I cannot see all the lists. I logged in to the console and ran the list_lists command it showed my lists but I want to see it from top to bottom. Is there a command to show all the list with a pause option? I set VIRTUAL_HOST_OVERVIEW = Off and that seems to have resolved the problem I outlined below. I know nothing about Python at the moment, so hacking the *.py files for customized functionality (by me) is probably not happening anytime soon, not without a mess ;-) Thank you. By default, mailing lists created via Mailman will be publicly accessible, but the mailing list administrator can choose to create private lists instead. The list archives can either be public or private, separately from the list itself (i.e., you can have private archives of a public list, or public archives of a private list, in addition to the obvious choices). You can also choose not to archive lists. -- Brad Knowles, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. -- Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), reply of the Pennsylvania Assembly to the Governor, November 11, 1755 SAGE member since 1995. [Mailman-Users] Lists work, but no archives
Hi, I'm a newbie using Mailman 2.1.5 on Linux (Redhat 9) with sendmail. I was able to install Mailman and create lists via the web. The lists work; messages sent to it go out to subscribers. The problem is that, even though I have set the Archive option via the web interface, none of my lists is archiving. When I go to the archive page via html, I get No messages have been posted to this list yet, so the archives are currently empty. I thought I had perhaps made a mistake with the pipermail alias in Apache, but when I go to http://www.storydynamics.com/pipermail/ I see what appears to be the correct list (i.e., one link for each of my mailing lists). I have searched my logs, at least the ones I could find. The only two logs in /usr/local/mailman/logs are error and subscribe. Subscribe looks reasonable; error is empty. I'm not sure exactly how to read all the other logs I have found in /var/log/ and in /var/log/httpd, but no entry seems relevant on the face of it. I don't know what other logs I should be trying to read. I have also searched the archives for help at http://www.mail-archive.com, with no success. Does anyone have an idea what I could have done wrong? Or at least where else to look? Thanks! Doug Lipman -- *** Doug Lipman, P.O. Re: [Mailman-Users] Lists work, but no archives - more info
Additional info, which I'm sure is more to the core of my problem: I was wrong that the lists work. In fact, any message I send - from any sender, registered or not - to the [EMAIL PROTECTED] address is sent on to the sender. When I fill out the subscription form at http://www.storydynamics.com/mailman/listinfo/myw, it appears that I am completing the process. But: 1. no confirmation email comes to the new member or to me as administrator. 2. the subscriber list remains empty, too. 3. no other previously registered subscribers get copies of the mail. I guess the archiving problem is just a symptom of whatever is causing this problem. Any ideas? Doug Hi, I'm a newbie using Mailman 2.1.5 on Linux (Redhat 9) with sendmail. [Mailman-Users] lists that are members of each other - bad idea?
I posted a question a couple of days ago about a particular Mailman set-up I wanted to achieve, but have since thought it would be better to ask a simpler and more specific question: Does anyone know the consequences of setting up two lists which are members of each other? I don't want to do something which will cause an endless loop and bring down the wrath of my hosting company upon myself! Presumably the X-BeenThere header should come into play to avoid such an eventuality, but will it work in these circs? Or even if it does work, should one not do this sort of thing for other reasons? Presumably the X-BeenThere header should come into play to avoid such an eventuality, but will it work in these circs? Or even if it does work, should one not do this sort of thing for other reasons? The risk is that you will have set up a potentially serious loop, for which there is only one way to detect and stop it before there is a melt down. All it would take is a misconfigured client or MTA to remove certain headers before sending the message on, and you and everyone else would be toast. Before you take a shotgun with a hair trigger and load it with thermonuclear shells, you might want to give some consideration to what it might do when you go away and leave it pointed in your direction -- especially when there are children and pets around, any one of which might accidentally set it off. -- Brad Knowles, [EMAIL PROTECTED] They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. -Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania. [Mailman-Users] Lists not showing up in listinfo page, (yup I read the FAQ.)
Before you flame, I've read the FAQ and noted the section on this symptom. But it hasn't addressed my problem. If you hit this URI: http://cactusairforce.org/mailman/listinfo You see all lists (including Mailman?!) but if you instead hit this one: http://www.cactusairforce.org/mailman/listinfo you only see the CAF and the Recruitment_list From the FAQ: 1. the value of the list's 'advertised' option (the first one on the page) of the Privacy Options Section of the list's admin web GUI. This isn't the problem. 2. the value of VIRTUAL_HOST_OVERVIEW in $prefix/Mailman/Defaults.py or mm_cfg.py. If this is set to true (usually 1) then you may be experiencing the effect of Mailman Virtual Host feature. In that case the address in the URL used to access listinfo is compared to the address in the list's 'web_page_url' option (the last one) of the General Options Section of the list's admin web GUI. If they are not the same, the list is not added to the listinfo page returned. If I change this value in Defaults.py (it doesn't appear in mm_cfy.py) to 0, I *can* see all of the lists, unfortunately it also displays all the lists from the other (non virtual) domain on this server. Also, I've checked in the GUI, there is no entry for 'web_page_url' there is one for 'host_name' but this is set for cactusairforce.org (in all the lists). But in Mailmans logs I will not find any information that it has received the eMail and no eMail is sent to the members on the list. If I dump all members of the list to a file, remove the list, create the list again and add all members, the list is working again for a while, and then it repeats again. It is not all lists that behave like above, other lists are working just fine! [Mailman-Users] Lists stopped for dns problems ?
Hi! I have two middle-size lists at a debian server (mailman version: 2.0.11) with exim 3.35 I have the following problem: Both lists stopped, the qrunner process got locked, the posts come in, but does not go out. I have the smtp-failure log full of these: 451 [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Cannot check [EMAIL PROTECTED] at this time - please try later) I read the exim-users archive, and finally found that it's often caused by dns problems. I thought, that such a problem will not cause mailman to stop, but to put these users to nomail. The only thing i could do it to put them to nomail manually and then clear the qfiles dir, because after putting them to nomail the .db files countained their address and the system tried to send mails to them. Is there any solution for this problem ? Ideally you fix the DNS problems if this is a general problem other than with a number of specific addresses. However there are a set of approaches for this as a general problem:- 1. Run a local caching DNS server, especially if you are more than a 100Mbit link from whatever resolver you use. Make sure the MTA is using that resolver. djb's dnscache works OK for this - see http://cr.yp.to/djbdns.html 2. Don't do DNS lookup (ie recipient verification) in the MTA for Mailman traffic. Instead let the MTA sort it out and deal with the bounces. For exim do something like:- receiver_verify_hosts = !127.0.0.1/8:0.0.0.0/0 to prevent verifies on mail recipients from a local Mailman install. Either of these will help, although you main answer - and a way of speeding things up for mailman submission is to do (2). (1) will generally speed the MTA. This stuff *is* in the FAQ. Try commenting out the security job for a bit and then opening up the rights on the whole Mailman directory structure - just as a test. In the past some folks running BSD have had similar problems due to rights on the directory structure. BTW: Mailman's check_perms program doesn't check the whole directory tree, just the part from ~mailman on down. If mailman's directory is hung off an inaccessible root directory then external apps (like say apache) could have real difficulty in reading your lists. I'm guessing that you are not running the Apache server in a chroot'ed environment. [Mailman-Users] Lists work, web doesn't.
Oh boy, I am at the end of my rope. I recently upgraded my Mandrake distro on my mailman server, and my lists seem to be delivering mail just fine, but I can't reach the web pages for them at all. Whenever I try to reach them using the URL in the subscription email, I get: -- No such list [List Name] There currently are no publicly-advertised mailman mailing lists on [Server Name]. To visit the info page for an unadvertised list, open a URL similar to this one, but with a '/' and the right list name appended. List administrators, you can visit the list admin overview page to find the management interface for your list. (Send questions or comments to [EMAIL PROTECTED]) - Where [List Name] is the name of the list and [Server Name] is the server. Now, before everyone says, The server name needs to match the one for the list! I already checked that. The server name is right. Besides that, I tried it with every other combination I could think of, and I have VIRTUAL_HOST_OVERVIEW set to 0 in the mm_cfg.py, anyway. And yes, the list is advertised (and even if it wasn't, it should still come up correctly when I go straight to its URL!). I'm using Postfix for my mail and Apache for my web server. I'm currently configured with mail gid mailman and cgi gid apache. Anyone have any clues? Thanks for your time! Re: [Mailman-Users] Lists periodically vanishing
Interesting, so you have both archives working in parallel: Pipermail and Mhonarc? That sounds like a hack. And I'm assuming that you are running a 2.0.x version install. I think that if you upgrade to 2.1.x you will remove the problem. The ubiquitous qrunner was replaced with various sub-processes that each do individual tasks - one such task is archiving. An other alternative is to copy the archive MBox periodically to a separate location and then point Mhonarc to the copy of Mbox, then it won't hold open the one used by Pipermail when Mhonarc does its re-indexing and discovery of new messages. I run Mhonarc differently. I simply subscribe a local user to my list and let Mhonarc use the mbox from the local user. You might think about that as an alternative for yourself. Good Luck! On Wed, 2003-01-08 at 14:18, Tom Maddox wrote: Hi, everyone, I've just been assigned the task of managing an existing mailman installation, and it's evidently been having a recurring problem with lists mysteriously vanishing for some short period of time and then reappearing, occasionally in a corrupted state (membership list and config settings hosed, etc.) The symptoms I've observed are as follows: 1) Mail sent to a list will bounce with a message like the following: - The following addresses had permanent fatal errors - [EMAIL PROTECTED] (reason: Data format error) - Transcript of session follows - list: Mailbox does not exist 501 5.6.0 Data format error 2) Attempting to access the archive web page for the list returns a 404 Not found error, although it *is* possible to access the standard information page about the list. It scans for changes in the mailman archives and then updates its own copy as necessary (at least, that's how I think it works). I would guess it's possible that mhonarc is locking the list archive file and causing concurrency issues and disruptions in the list as a result. Any thoughts?
