Re: [MlMt] custom keybindings suddenly stopped working [SOLVED]

2019-11-12 Thread Ted Byfield
I don't understand this, but... I hadn't touched < ~/Library/Application
Support/Mailmate/Resources/Special.plist > in months, but when the
custom keybindings broke I took the occasion to update that file — and
introduced a typo (a missing quotation mark in one line). So I don't see
how that could be the cause, but fixing that typo along with the usual
diddling — dis/enabling the keybindings option, restarting a few
times, etc — seems to have fixed it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ted

We could agree to limit the scope to a best-practices wiki, and thus
wouldn't have a lot of scope creep.

Not a bad idea, but what’s the objection to putting such a section

It could be, but I assume that Benny has his hands full (and would like
time off). Resources like that can involve multiple layers of work
(writing, updating with releases, etc); and sometimes they're best done
by users — for example, as a subreddit.

Why can’t the manual have this as part of it?

Re: [MlMt] sound notifications in Sierra

2016-09-22 Thread Ted Byfield
Ah, yes, forgot to mention that as well. I had the same problem with
Sierra turning on UI sound effects, and I quickly turned them off. Not
sure why, but I had also set the volume slide for "blow" to zero (and
that one keeps going in Mailmate), whereas I hadn't done that to "glass"
(which had stopped after some fiddling around).

Three separate UIs for turning off sound notifications, bleh -- feels
like Windows back when dinosaurs roamed the earth.

But thank you for the tip -- it feels like a hack, but it worked. 

To restore my pre-upgrade settings, System Preferences -> Sound ->
Sound Effects, then

* move the Alert volume slider completely to the left
* uncheck "Play user interface sound effects"

I've also restarted Mailmate, rebooted, etc but my preference don't
seem to stick completely -- "glass" (or whatever) has gone away but

I filter them.

Any suggestions about how to make it stop would be warmly welcome.

Re: [MlMt] Devonthink

2016-08-25 Thread Ted Byfield

It's great. In principle I prefer the most minimal approach possible —
.txt files, file system, open standards, etc — but in practice I've
found that the search tools in Devonthink, as they say, make a
difference that makes a difference. In particular, the ability to easily
slurp down resources from the web with a one-click extension/add-on is
very useful. I've been using it for many years (close to ten?!) and have
*never* had any problems with reliability or compatibility, which is
really impressive. In that time, the devs have struck me as very
generous in their approach to paid upgrades. DEVONagent is also
remarkable, although I've never fully adjusted to a special-purpose
browser for research.

One downside is that it's a bit expensive by current standards. If
you're thinking about buying it, it's worth considering a Tibits
membership, which — aside from supporting a pillar of the Mac indy
software community — includes a big discount on Devon's software,
among with many others:

https://tidbits.com/member_benefits.html

As for Devonthink vs Evernote, I couldn't say, YMMV, and this isn't the
place.

My apologies if these seem like inappropriate commercial plugs. Maybe
it'll be more on-topic if I say the Devon devs are on par with Benny?

Cheers,
T

[MlMt] frequent crashes and freezes, + earlier keyboard lag

2016-03-23 Thread Ted Byfield

Hi --

I've been seeing a rising tide of unexpected quits and freezes (as in,
spinning rainbow pizzas of death). The first sign of this was unexpected
quits that happened when I tried to edit replies in GPG-encrypted
conversations, but since then the problems have become much more common
-- roughly 1 out of 3 times I interact with Mailmate at all, including
something as simple as pulling clicking on a menubar counter.

From time immemorial the generic advice for fixing this kind of problem
for any app(lication) was: reinstall it! But I use Mailmate to check
several accounts, so I'd really like to keep the amount of work involved
to a bare minimum. Is there a clear set of steps I should follow to try
to solve this problem?

One possible clue: for a long time before these crashes/freezes started
happening, I was seeing keyboard lag problems -- sometimes a periodic
lag of a second or two while I'm typing a message.

Thanks!
