RE: MI warning message upon startup

2000-08-30 Thread Justusson Christer

Hi!

Rename it to MIDLOCI.DLL_ to disable it. My guess is that it might be
because SpatialWare odbc driver4.0 instead of 3.50 is installed. The same
thing happened here and that was the only difference in installation I could
see.

Anyone know how to get rid of the warning message

that pops up each time I start MI? And as a side note, what is it for (the

I do not think Excel can accept that many records.
We use Access to import huge TXT files instead of Excel.
Then it can be re-imported into MapInfo.

Re: MIF file format

2000-08-30 Thread brendan . a . henry

Preetha,
MapInfo can read directly from MIF files. I'm just guessing that your purpose
might be to export MIF/MapInfo files to another format. You may want to
elaborate.
In any case the mif file will have a similar header (if not exactly the same) -
certainly the same order.
However, in some cases there will be extra lines (e.g. Unique ), and the
Coordsys line may be different depending on the projection of the map.

Hope this helps!

Hello,

I am trying to write a program that can read MIF files. I have downloaded
MIF file format technical description from
http://www.mapinfo.com/community/library/interchange_file.pdf.

The MIF file header contains several clauses. Is it necessary that these
clauses should occur in the order which they have been mentioned in the
document or can there exist MIF files where the order of information in the
header is different from the one mentioned in the document.

I would appreciate any help in this regard. Thank You in advance.

MI Choosing/Using alternative pen files

Hello listers,
I would like to be able to choose a different .pen file from within MapInfo or
possibly in a MapBasic script.
The standard is mapinfow.pen which I can certainly change, but I would like to
have the option of doing this after having opened MapInfo.
Can this be done?

MI Using StreetAppend

2000-08-30 Thread Walt Kelly

Greetings to all:

I am running MapInfo 5.5 along with StreetInfo
5.0.

After upgrading to Windows 2000, I tried to append
data for several counties with StreetAppend. All seemed normal - the proper
counties showed up, the proper layers showed up - until the final "OK." Then I
received the message:
"Appending Highways
No tables of Highways Data found for the selected
counties."

The 2 lines repeated for each of the layers I had
tried to append.

Nothing appeared in the target folder.

Suggestions would be highly appreciated! Thank
you.

Re: MI Importing a File

2000-08-30 Thread Kurt Ackermann

If your entire text file is set up the same way as your example, a quick
and dirty solution could be to open the text file in Excel, a dialog box
will open and you can set the column divisions and cell settings for the
columns in there (I tried it with your example and it was very
straightforward with no need to adjust the column width, only giving the
cells character settings).

That makes a standard excel file which you can copy and paste into a
Mapinfo browser after you create and give settings to a new TAB file.
Ie, you set up a new empty TABle in Mapinfo with the three* (four if you
want some kind of 'id' field) fields you require, then open the browser
which will, of course, be empty; make sure it's active and paste your
copied excel records directly into it.

I don't know Mapinfo's limit for records in one TABle offhand, but it
would just entail creating enough TABles to handle your data if you're
over the limit I assume.

*I'm not sure whether the example you gave was 3 or 4 fields (columns),
but if it is 4 you could avoid the 3rd and 4th overlapping by doing a
global replace, for example of 5 spaces with 10. Again, it's a very
quick and dirty solution and anybody with even a smidgeon of Perl
experience will laugh at it, but it works if you're only semi-computer
literate, like me!

Hello from New Zealand

One way around the problem you describe is to open the *.mbx file in notepad
or similar. Most of it will look like rubbish. The first line will look
something like this:

!App
!Version 550
!Charset WindowsLatin1

This tells MapInfo what version it was compiled in; in this example, version
5.5. You can change this to a previous number, ie. 4.5 or 5.0 then same the
file in notepad. Provided there are no commands from the later version
within the program this should run.

I have a program that will automate this.

Hi Gatot!
The policy of MI Corporation is to release MI Pro and MB versions
hand-in-hand. This is to enable programmers to use the new functions of
each release in programming.
If you do not want to do this, it is perfectly all right to continue
programming in v 4 and run the code in MI v5, 5.5 and so on.
But because code that have been compiled in MB v5 may contain functions
not available in MI v4, MapInfo checks the version stamp of the MBX and
refuses to run an MBX with a higher version than itself.
So to conclude: If you need the new v5 or 6 functions you must upgrade
your MapBasic but at the same time, you must be aware that older MI
versions will not be able to run your programs.

Search the archives of this list for a number of tips to circumcise this
problem, it is possible to alter the MBX header but you must be sure to
NOT use the newest functions for this to work.
Another solution is to keep copies of the old compiler - the manuals
describe how to use the compiler from the command line.

It must also be said that apart from the version upgrades, absolutely
nothing has been changed in the programming environment - it is still
very simple to say the least.
What we would need are for example template constructs, codeword
coloring, realtime syntax check, visual dialog creation etc all of which
are common in programming tools of today. But I doubt it will ever
happen.

2000-08-30 Thread Mats Elfström

David Thibault wrote:
> Is there any way to translate the HMR format photo to the TAB format without

Hi David!
That depends on what you are trying to do. I'm a bit puzzled when you
say you need to rotate the orthophotos. Normal cartographic practice is
to have true north 'up' and orthophotos are no exception.
If your orthos differ I regret to tell you that the raster engine of
MapInfo cannot alter the row/column structure of the image file, but
must display it pixel by pixel.
By calculating transformation parameters on the control points for the
raster file, MapInfo is able to fit the display of vector data as well
as possible to the raster image. Since an orthophoto is a cartographic
representation, this is not a big deal, but be aware that even an
unrectified aerial photo may be used with very good results. At least if
your area of interest lies in the center area of the photo.
Not much help so far.
If you need to rotate your orthos, you can do that with any image
handling software. Try to figure out the degree of rotation and use a
software (eg photoshop, paint shop) where the rotation can be entered
numerically.

MI Create Point on Polyline

2000-08-30 Thread BMaes

Everybody,

Is there an easy way to snap a to-be-created point to a line/polyline? I
have noticed that if you turn the Snap option on, it is only possible to
snap to the constituent points of the (poly-)line, not somewhere in between.
Anyone knows a solution or has a Mapbasic script, which enables to create a
point on a polyline. I can imagine something like:
- find the nearest polyline from the clicked point
- create circle around point with radius = distance to nearest polyline
- Created point = intersection of polyline and circle
This would require a "distance to polyline" function. Anyone wants to pass
an implementation?

Thanks,

Bart Maes

The problem is probably due to the fact that you use

Try initializing your variable (Symbol_type =

Subject:MI how to avoid status
windows (progress bars)

I am using MapInfo Pro 6.0 / MapBasic 6.0 on
a NT 4.0 computer to convert
several TAB-files
(import, export, data modification,
indexing).
But this cannot be done in background
because MI Pro requires the focus on
its main window.
Otherwise status windows and progress bars
are not displayed and block
further script execution.
At this time the MI Pro icon in the task bar
starts blinking and waits to be
activated.

Now I would like to get rid of these status
windows.

(Send your hints to

in advance.)

MI Problem while converting georeferenced image to TAB format

2000-08-30 Thread David Thibault

Hi everybody!

I would have a question for you. I have a georeferenced aerial photo in HMR
format. HMR format comes from Microstation - Descartes and it is different
from GeoTiff and because it supports a rotation factor. My problem is the
following. A rotation factor have been applied in Descartes to a set of
orthophoto in order for us to print them correctly (I mean horizontaly). Is
there any way to translate the HMR format photo to the TAB format without
loosing the rotation factor previously applied.

Hope that one of you will have a solution to my problem!

Re: MIF file format

2000-08-30 Thread Kazuhiko Yamashita
Hi Preetha,

I do not know exactly what you are trying to do but I suppose you want
to import MIF/MID files onto another format of GIS software, other than
MapInfo.

Talking about header lines, I think description about projection is so
important.
And a line with "WindowsLatin1" does not work with Japanese
characters/letters on MID files.
Since Japanese is two byte coded language, it should be
"WindowsJapanese" or "WindowsNeutral".
I think the latter can work with other two byte languages, such as
Chinese, Korean, Greek and others. I hope this information can be a
little help.
