MI-L Re:Converting Vector maps to registerd Raster Images

2000-11-02 Thread Jacques Gelinas

Jasper,

In order to produce high quality raster backdrop from vector data you can
use the following approach.

1. Print your vector data from MapInfo (layout or mapper) to a postscript
device (you can obtain postscript drivers and postscript definition file for
freefrom adobe, hp drivers are also good for this approach if your
original maps were designed for D, E size prints)

2. Using PhotoShop (or any other software that can rasterize ps file
correctly) rasterize the resulting ps file at the required resolution while
keeping a 1:1 ratio for the layout size you set in step 1. You'll have to
makecompromises - file size - resolution - quality require. Uncompress tif
output is a safe bet as an output rater format.

3. To register the results use MapInfo. (you don't need fancy raster
registration software if you put a grid/graticule in your vector map before
print/output to ps (step1).

4. Keep in mind file sizes will be large and processing might be
slow.

5. Any other questionsfeel free to contact me.

Best Regards,
Jacques Gelinas

Dear listmembers, I am relatively new to
MapInfo and me and the organization I work for are facing the problem of trying
to create a registered raster image file from a vector background map. We cannot
use the vector map because of copyright reasons. We have already tried the
save window as an image file and then to register the image file again. This
works okay, but if you view the image in MapInfo and you zoom in the view gets
really distorted, because of the low resolution.I wonder if there is a
way to increase the resolution in MapInfo or whether there are tools for
creating a registerd raster image from vector maps. Thanks in advance for
helping me with this problem.Yours sincerely, Jasper de Fockert

MI ECW question

2000-09-04 Thread Jacques Gelinas

We find the ECW compression utility to be the one
the best mapping tool innovation to come along in a while.
We've presently starting aforest inventory
mapping project for which we will be producing over 2000 orthophotos using PCI
OrthoEngine. The ortho outputs are producedin tif/twf format
whichare then compressed at 1:20 using the FREE ECW compression utility.
The results go from 20 meg to under 1meg per photo.
We made accuracy/quality checks. The results are
more then acceptable.

Unfortunately MapInfo does not read the geocoded
information within the ECW. So re-registering 2000 ECW files within MapInfo was
out of the question.

Can anyone confirm this? We also tried the
MapImagery add-on without any luck.

Also because MapInfo does not offer Stream Mode
Digitizing we had to look at using ArcView which allows full stream mode
digitzing capabilities and automatic snapping features. Oh yes, Arcview also
reads the geocoded information from the ECW file like a
charm.

ArcView also can curve text along features. But
that is another issue.

RE:MI Looking for Animal Fonts or Font tools in general

2000-08-02 Thread Jacques Gelinas

Lindsay,

There is two tool
that we use to create/combine true type fonts.
1. Fontographer by Macromedia
2. CorelDraw V9

Note that the font that you create must be of type
"symbol" otherwise MapInfo ignores them. This is why you don't see all your
loaded fonts when you open the symbol tool(s).
Also in order to get the desired inserting point, size
ect... there are numerous design rules one must follow.

As for animal font you might find what you need at
this site http://www.mapsymbols.com/

Hope this helps a bit

Hi listers

to create these files myself (eitherfree/shareware or

results in MI while the TTFversion can be used in MI and

RE: MI dispersion

2000-06-29 Thread Jacques Gelinas

Antoine

This might not be the full solution your are
looking for but it might be a work around.

With VM use the "region to grid function" and set
the "grid cell size" to correspond to a pre selected thematic range value (this
is the logical part).
Once the grid is created within the region you can
convert the grid back to points.
Obviously each required polygon will have to be
selected, gridded and converted back to points.
You will also have to do some testing to determine
the required range values.

I believe Vertical Mapper has a SDK
kit.

SUM: Reading BIL file in MI

2000-06-28 Thread Jacques Gelinas

Original Question

I have a raster .bil file (with header .hdr)
that MI raster engine will not recognize.
The same file can be read in ArcView and Image
Alchemy.
Page 256 of the MI 5 manual does indicate that the
BIL (spot) image format can be read.
I wonder what causes MI to reject this
file?
Maybe there are numerous flavors of the BIL
format?

The .hdr file looks like this:
NCOLS 478
NROWS 480
NBANDS 3
NBITS 8
SKIPBYTES 0
__
Thanks to Bill Wemple of MapInfo for his quick response.
The required .hdr file formatfor reading the colour BIL
filementioned above into MapInfo is as follows.
NCOLS 478
NROWS 480
NBANDS 3
NBITS 8
BAND_RGB 123
Bill also gave me the info required for geocoding the image.
For the time being loading the images into MapInfo will be enough to please
the client.
Thanks again

Sum: MI6 and VM2.1

2000-06-26 Thread Jacques Gelinas

Thanks to Flavio Hendry of Geographic Information
Solutions for replying to my question regarding the coexistence of VM2.1 with
MI6.0.

According to Flavio there is no problem running
VM2.1 under MI6

Also found out that programs compiled with; lets
say version 4.1 of MapBasic should be compatible with MI version 4.1 and all
subsequant versions. However if you compile a program using MapBasic 6 and try
to load it in MI 5.5 it might not work.

So I assume that because VM2.1 was compiled with
aolder version of MapBasic it should always be upward
compatible.

MI SVG support in MapInfo and Links

For those of you interest in Scalable Vector

SVG mapping capabilities can also be viewed at
DBXGeomatics

Food for thought and open discussion.

Will MapInfo provide an svg export filter in the
likes of those found in Adobe or Corel products?
Generally speaking, can SVGeventually be an
viable alternative to expensive corporate map servers?

Have a nice weekend, Bonne fin de semaine, (next

Derek,
In cartographic terms I believe you are refering to Cartogram maps. As
far as I know there are no unique software solution to make these maps (If there
is I would like to know).
Chapter 10 of Cartography Thematic Map Design by Borden D. Dent
addresses this type of mapping. ISBN 0-697-22970-X
Knowing the technics describe by Mr. Dent
you can then use a combination of MapInfo, and a graphic package of your choice
(and a lot of trial/error/patience) to create cartogram maps.

Hope this helps a bit...

MI SUM: Vertical near-side perspective (plus fun map)

2000-06-09 Thread Jacques Gelinas

In summary I did not get any answers from the
List.
I conclude (until proven wrong) that MapInfo does
not handle the Vertical near-side perspective projection. However, Arcview does.
Maybe a future version of MapInfo will allow forthis
projection...

In the meantime for those interested I've put up
two simple maps showing the smoking population in percentage for Canada for 1985
and 1999.
Which province has the highest percentage of
smokers?
Does Eastern Canada smoke more or less the Western
Canada?

We use a product called Geographic

You should also take a look at ERMapper's
