[MCN-L] Secure Mobile Device Charging Lockers/Cabinets/Stations

2019-09-27 Thread Bryon Thornburgh
Does anyone have any experience with secure mobile device charging
lockers/cabinets/stations (example:
https://chargetech.com/product/cell-phone-charging-locker/) where a visitor can
securely leave their device plugged into a charger? Can you share your
experience?

Brand/model recommendations?
What do you wish you had known before you bought yours?
How much did it cost you?
Other thoughts, considerations, etc. you can share?

Happy to chat offline if that is easier.

Sincerely,

The MCN IT SIG has a spreadsheet where ~30 organizations have self reported
their inventory of software products they are using.

Has anyone done a survey of which POS or CRM systems members are using for

Re: [MCN-L] Digital signage rough cost estimate

2019-05-09 Thread Bryon Thornburgh
Matt,
Not sure if you are still looking for numbers, but we are actively evaluating
digital signage solutions (currently we've looked at 4 different solutions -
FourWinds Interactive, Toshiba, Ping HD and Tightrope/Carousel) and we are
seeing the following for costs (per display) inclusive of media player,
licensing, tech support, warranty, etc. The price does not include the actual
display/TV, any custom integrations with systems like ticketing,
scheduling/event management, etc. or ang on-going professional design/creative
services.

Year 1: $700-$2,300
Year 2+: $100-$600

We've looked at both on premise and cloud based solutions as well as media
player and media playerless solutions. Happy to discuss further if you are
interested.

Hey Musetech brain trust…

I’m outlining a rough proposal that would include among many other things some
digital signage.
Looking for someone to tell me rough estimates for “total cost of ownership” …

I’m guessing the devices themselves are the easiest part, installation is what
I’m looking for help with.

Anyone?

Re: [MCN-L] Elevator digital signage

2018-06-26 Thread Bryon Thornburgh
Desi,
We recently looked at installing digital signs in our existing elevators and it
was too costly (~$10K for 3 elevator cars). Alternatively, we installed signs
directly outside the elevators on every floor. Our goals for these signs are
first to replace the physical signs throughout the building and in the
elevators that are not accurate since we are temporarily using our galleries
for exhibitions/collections that wouldn't normally be there while our other
building is closed for remodeling. The second goal is to experiment with these
signs (messaging, wayfinding, etc.) as we think about the re-opening of our
second building and how we'll use the digital signs in that building/throughout
the campus. It is TBD if these signs will stay installed once our other
building re-opens, but based on the positive feedback I'm hearing, I'd be
surprised if we take them down.

Our digital sign vendor is Four Winds Interactive. The elevator signs are using
their media player-less solution. We've looked at a number of other vendors
(Ping, Toshiba, Tightope, etc.) as part of the building remodel project and I
would be happy to chat more about what we are seeing.

I was intrigued by the digital signs in the elevators by the Luce Center at The
Met. The content changes as the elevator stops at each floor to show you what
is on that floor. Seems pretty basic, but I thought it was done quite well.

Happy to chat further,

Hi all,

At The Warhol, we're renovating our elevators and considering adding digital
signage to message basic information to visitors.

At your institution, do you have digital signage in elevators? If so, what
vendors did you use? What are the goals for your elevator signage? Have you
found elevator signage to be a successful communication tool?

Thanks in advance!
Desi

Subject: [MCN-L] GDPR webinar with the MCN Data and Insights SIG

Hi all,

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) law changes coming into play will
impact museums and visitor privacy globally, enforceable from 25 May
2018 as discussed already in this forum.

To help clarify what GDPR means for museums both in the EU and also in other
countries, the MCN Data and Insights SIG will present a webinar on GDPR led by
Paulina Jedwabska, Head of Information Governance and Departmental Records
Officer at Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), Thursday
15th March 2018 at 3PM Eastern time.

More details to come, stay tuned and look forward to seeing you there.

Best,
Angie

Subject: [MCN-L] Facility management platforms

Hello fellow mcn peeps

I am currently in the process of researching FMS platforms (facility management
software) and IWMS (Integrated Workplace Management Systems) platform
integrations To aid us in properly end to end manage the following:

  *   Space management.
  *   Asset/equipment tracking
  *   Space use tracking
  *   Maintenance tracking
As of today there is a proliferation of calendars, excel documents, and other
various tools used to manage the above. However, lack of integration, version
control or granular filtering create a range of resource assignment conflicts
and miscommunication. emails/ calendaring platforms (ala exchange) are
inefficient for controlled communication and do not provide just in time, at a
glance information to different stakeholders (security/ AV and others) The
ideal platform will be easy to customize, and have various levels of access
control that can be assigned. tracking of assets and spaces are critical.
What platforms or controls do you use in your institutions? Are they tied to
your Building management systems? Fixed asset financial tracking?

Thank you for your valuable input

Re: [MCN-L] IT SIG: IT Managing AV?

2017-07-02 Thread Bryon Thornburgh
When I started at the DAM AV was not in IT, but we have since moved it into IT
since we share some similar equipment and there are some shared skill sets
between the two departments.

Our AV department's responsibilities include:
- Presales for external clients hosting an event in a number of spaces
throughout the museum
- Providing equipment and staff support for external client events
- Providing equipment and staff support for internal (staff, support groups,
board of directors, etc.) events
- Occasionally they work with external AV companies that are hired to support
internal and external events
- Service/maintain AV equipment inventory
- Run our 266 person auditorium including projection and control rooms
- Consultant when needed on AV equipment installations in galleries to support
an exhibition
- Video editing for internal and external clients

We have 1 FT AV Manager and 6 AV on-call techs that work as event support
demand dictates.

We've been in contact with the registrar. Primarily because we thought if the

Re: [MCN-L] Cloud Exit Strategy / Termination Policies

2017-01-13 Thread Bryon Thornburgh
Kate,
This isn't exactly what you are looking for, but maybe there are some learnings
from source code escrow services. If you aren't familiar with source code
escrow, it is a service where a vendor keeps and maintains a copy of the source
code for their software/application in a third-party escrow account. If a
qualifying event takes place (i.e. vendor goes out of business), the source
code is released to the customer and the customer has rights to use the source
code. These services are common for business critical applications where the
livelihood of a company/organization is dependent on an application.

I personally don't have any agreements to share as I've only researched these
services and never purchased them. I'm sure a quick Google search will give you
a number of vendors to look at, but at one time Iron Mountain offered this
service.

Would anyone have knowledge or samples of a cloud services termination

I'm researching materials that are intended to deal with backup, re-migration,

Subject: [MCN-L] Forms for Confluence

Hello MCN!

We're evaluating Confluence as a collaborative platform for document sharing
and project management. My question is around form add-ins. We have many,
pretty extensive forms that exist as Word docs, presently. We'd like to use a
form add-in in Confluence to eliminate the amount of Word docs floating around
and streamline the submission process. I would be so grateful for any feedback
around the questions below!

-Which form add-in is the best (has the most/best features, is not clunky and
allows you to manage the data captured in a variety of ways)?

-In the case of long, text heavy (very narrative) forms where users might
actually have to draft and edit responses - is there a form that can handle
this?
For example:
a) save a half-completed form in Confluence before submission and go back to it
later
b) save a draft of the submission as a document outside of Confluence for
editing
c) edit submitted forms
I'm aware these requirements sound like people need to make documents and not
forms...but dumping documents into Confluence doesn't seem to automate
requests/service requests. I'm a bit puzzled about the right direction,
admittedly.

-Has anyone worked with Confluence developers that can build custom solutions
and integrations?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Re: [MCN-L] MCN ITSig: IT management conferences

2015-06-08 Thread Bryon Thornburgh
Brian,
Checkout the Society for Information Management (SIM). They have chapters
throughout the country. Assuming all chapters operate like the Denver chapter,
we have an event once a month with an outside speaker on a particular topic.
There is also a national conference every fall (this year it is in Charlotte).
SIM has a number of other opportunities beyond just the monthly event and the
annual conference (leadership program, women's program, etc.). I've belonged to
SIM before working for a museum and would highly recommend the organization, no
matter what type of organization your IT leadership role is in.

Sincerely,

Subject: [MCN-L] MCN ITSig: IT management conferences

Hello all,

While I certainly enjoyed my first swim through the MCN conference in Dallas
last year, I’m curious to hear about any other conferences my peers attend,
specifically those that focus on the IT management side of our jobs.

Thanks everyone!

[MCN-L] Job Posting - Denver Art Museum - Contract Developer

2015-06-01 Thread Bryon Thornburgh
The Denver Art Museum is seeking an experienced developer to assist in the
development of an online collections access system. We are opening up our
encyclopedic collection of art and cultural heritage objects to the public, and
we need someone who is excited about helping us pursue our mission of enriching
people's lives through the arts and by establishing connections between
individuals and our shared cultural history.

This is a contract position. You will be part of a team of professionals from
various disciplines working to bring our wealth of collections data to the web
in a freely accessible, searchable and browseable site. This collections site
will need to be able to integrate tightly with the DAM's other web properties,
enabling us to draw on the rich information available there for use in other
applications. We're looking primarily for a back-end developer who possesses an
understanding of front-end development and isn't afraid to dive into
HTML/CSS/Javascript when necessary, though we also have a front-end developer
to help. We intend to build a site in Drupal that updates our collection data
from our digital assets management system via API.

What we offer:

  * An enthusiastic team with a shared mission of enriching our community and
the world through the arts and cultural heritage.
  * The opportunity to work on a high-profile project for a world renowned
non-profit cultural institution.
What we expect from you:

  * Attention to detail and long-term maintenance-oriented design thinking.
  * Ability to self-manage multiple tasks and deliver results on schedule
  * Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work
with a multi-disciplinary team
  * Expert advice and guidance. We're looking for someone who wants to make
meaningful contributions to the final product.
  * Offsite work is fine, but must be available for scheduled face-to-face
meetings for progress updates and design discussions
Qualifications:

  * Bachelors or equivalent work experience in development-related degree
program
  * Prior experience in completed projects and team-based efforts
  * Professional-level knowledge of standards-based HTML, CSS, Javascript and
PHP
  * Experience with REST and SOAP API development
  *   Experience with mobile-friendly/responsive development
  * Experience with Drupal a big plus
  * Experience with Elasticsearch not required but a plus.

Hi MCN!
I'm looking for some quick current data about your Museum's IT Department.
If you have a moment, your response would be much appreciated:

1. How many people work at your Museum?
2. How many people are in the IT Department at your Museum?
3. What are all the titles (or roles/responsibility areas) of the people
in
IT at your Museum?
4. Does every IT person have a specific set of responsibilities or are
there a lot of overlapping responsibilities?
5. Who does the head of your IT Department report to?
6. Would you share the name of your Museum?

If this survey has been done before and the data exists somewhere, please
accept my apologies for repeating the questions and point me to the
results.

Thank you!
