[MCN-L] MCN statement on the government shutdown

MCN would like to express its support to our colleagues in the community
who are experiencing hardship as a result of the government shutdown.

Museums, libraries, parks, monuments, and other cultural heritage agencies
funded by the United States’ federal government provide vital services and
economic contributions. They enrich the lives of all Americans and
strengthen American democracy. In addition, federal granting agencies, such
as the Institute of Museum and Library Services, serve the work of many
private, nonprofit institutions, and the cultural heritage sector as a
whole.

Dedicated to growing the digital capacity of museum professionals, MCN
believes a political impasse simply should not disrupt or threaten these
critical services. Thousands of federal employees – cultural and
information professionals, support staff, and contractors – are currently
furloughed without pay, unable to perform their duties or carry out the
essential missions of their agencies. All workers, including non-federal
contract workers, deserve to be paid in a timely manner, and to be able to
work without threat of future disruptions.

We urge our government to find ways to end the standoff and allow everyone
to return to work as soon as possible.

For the past 2 years, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to co-chair the
Media Production & Branding SIG – it’s been a great way to connect with the
talented people in our field, keep up with the latest news, hear what
others are up to, and meet new people interested in media production.

Our SIG’s mission is to support museum professionals through discussions on
methods for digital media production (video, audio, text, etc.) as a
storytelling and audience engagement device to manifest an organization’s
identity and mission.

As media production continues to grow as a way that museums reach our
audiences, it’s more important than ever to keep these discussions going.
Thoughtful approaches to branding, identity and mission are critical to
reaching and engaging new communities.

If you want to help continue this conversation and stay on the forefront of
what’s happening with media production, branding and museums, please
consider running for chair of this great SIG. We need 2 people to step up

[MCN-L] Apply for MCN's DEAI Advisory Board!

In fall 2018, MCN (Museum Computer Network - http://mcn.edu/) announced its
new statement on diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion. We are
recruiting 12 to 20 individuals to serve on a newly formed Advisory Board
dedicated to DEAI.

   - *RESPONSIBILITY: *The advisory board is a consultative body made up of
   members who will share their expertise and help prioritize strategic goals.
   Members may also be on-call to advise on specific questions or projects.
   - *COMMITMENT: *The advisory board will meet at most on a quarterly
   basis. We encourage one face-to-face meeting per year at MCN's annual
   conference, although the ability to attend the conference is not a
   prerequisite for joining the advisory board.
   - *SELECTION CRITERIA:* We hope to select 12 to 20 members who represent
   wide-ranging dimensions of diversity, with an eye towards giving voice to
   under-represented groups. For our organization, diversity means a lot of
   things. Advisors will represent groups that are historically marginalized
   due to race, gender and gender expression, sexual orientation, ability,
   economic background, and age. We’re also looking for members from a wide
   range of cultural institutions and professional roles, considering
   dimensions such as subject matter expertise, organization size, and stage
   in career.

[MCN-L] AAC Linked Open Data Guide with lesson learned, good practices recommendations, and LOD FAQs

MESSAGE FROM ELEANOR FINK

As you may know, the American Art Collaborative Linked Open Data Initiative
recently published over 200,000 LOD object records drawn from the
collections of thirteen museums and one archive.  Each AAC partner has or
is in the process of creating a webpage with links to their museum’s LOD as
well as the entire AAC LOD.

In addition, the AAC guide (Overview and Recommendations for Good
Practices) aimed at helping the broader museum community understand and
engage in LOD is now complete and available on the AAC website under the
Resources, Publications, and Tools Section:

The guide includes an overview of LOD essentials, project approach and
lessons learned; good practices recommendations; and LOD FAQs which include
such questions as How much time does it take to create LOD; What skills are
needed to engage in LOD; Should our institution have a digital policy in
place, etc.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) law changes coming into play
will impact museums and visitor privacy globally, enforceable from 25 May
2018. To help clarify what GDPR means for museums both in the EU and also
in other countries, the MCN Data and Insights SIG will present a webinar on
GDPR led by Paulina Jedwabska, Head of Information Governance and
Departmental Records Officer at Department for Digital, Culture, Media and
Sport (DCMS).

*About Paulina Jedwabska*
Head of Information Governance with excellent interpersonal skills and a
genuine enthusiasm for creative solutions. Proven track record in
governance, communications and training. Currently working as a DRO and
active DPO at DCMS, responsible for internal compliance with GDPR.
Previously working at the National Portrait Gallery. Fluent in English and
Polish.
In my previous role, I achieved review and sign off of all departmental
retention schedules, roll out data protection training for all staff and
improve basic records management training for new starters. I've set a
framework for GDPR compliance.

In my previous position, I worked with Pyeongchang Organising Committee
(POCOG) and Tokyo Organising Committee (TOCOG) to deliver their knowledge
transfer policy as well as coordinate knowledge transfer from Rio 2016. I
developed new initiatives for harvesting quality materials from OCOGs as
well as implemented new terminology process. In my past role, I managed the
ODA Enterprise Information Management system with over 6 million records
and 7TB of data. Set requirements and testing for migration from ODA
LiveLink to DCMS LiveLink. Managed final disposition of ODA records to TNA,
DCMS and 3rd party archives.

Cross-Pollinator program offering 4 Forum fellowships to distribute to

action to confront challenges in our field, our communities, and our

Mentoring is an important cornerstone of career advancement as it fosters
professional growth and builds peer relationships among both mentors and
mentees. Whether you are new to the field or a senior museum professional,
and you would like to engage in candid discussions about career

annual survey, whose findings will add new market intelligence to our
sector in the form of a free industry report that will be shared throughout
MCN’s community and Axiell’s customers.

Axiell is interested in knowing the predominant strategies that museums use
to improve your collections data and to what degree your institution is
leveraging volunteers and crowdsourcing. Leveraging volunteers and
crowdsourcing are often lauded as solutions for addressing digitization
backlogs, data cleaning and increasing the depth of data records.

[MCN-L] ED Search for the Norman B. Leventhal Map Center (Boston Public Library)

We are looking to bring in the next Executive Director for the Norman B.
Leventhal Map Center at the Boston Public Library.  The Map Center has a
historically significant collection of over 200,000 (World, European and
United States) maps and 5,000 atlases. The Map Center is ranked among the
top 10 in the United States for the size of its collection, the
significance of its historic (pre-1900) material, and its advanced
digitization program.  It is unique among the major collections because it
also combines these features with exceptional educational programs to
advance geographic literacy among students in grades K to 12 and enhance
the teaching of subjects from history to mathematics to language arts.  The
collection is also the second largest in the country located in a public
library, ensuring unlimited access to these invaluable resources for
scholars, educators, and the general public.  Educational programs for
students in grades K to 12 are offered to school groups on site and in the
classroom. More than 100 lesson plans based on national standards are
available on the website, and professional development programs for
teachers are scheduled regularly throughout the year.
With the above as context, we seek an entrepreneurial and mission-driven
individual to provide the intellectual leadership, vision, and inspiration
to the Center.   Map domain knowledge is not required.  The ideal leader
will likely have a passion for historical collections and have a commitment
to education, digitization/technology, and scholarship.  Individuals could
come from non-profits, academia, libraries, museums, publishing, etc.

[MCN-L] Call for SIG Chairs candidates

Hi everyone
For the first time in MCN’s history since revising the SIG Charter
<http://mcn.edu/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/SIGs-Charter_2014_FINAL.pdf>
last year, we will hold virtual elections between December 1-15, 2015 to
elect SIG Chairs and Vice Chairs. These volunteer positions have so far
been held by leaders who were appointed in their role by MCN's Board given
the previous process.

As a reminder, MCN Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are organized and run by
MCN members who have shared interests related to MCN’s overall mission.
Each SIG provides a forum for MCN members to pursue specific interests and
niche topics. You'll find the names of the current SIG Chairs by perusing
each SIG page on our website
<http://mcn.edu/community/special-interest-groups-sigs/>. All are
professionals who have particular expertise or interest in a SIG's area.

In addition to being active in the community, chairing a SIG also
constitutes a leadership development opportunity. We invite anyone who
might be interested in the opportunity to let their intent known to the
current leaders of each SIG *no later than Friday November 20, 2015 by 12pm
ET*.

The list of candidates will be prepared and shared via online ballot forms
so everyone can participate in electing next year's SIG Chairs and Vice
Chairs. The voting will take place from December 1 through December 15,
2015. A reminder will be emailed to all.

At the end of the voting period, the ballots will be counted and the two
top candidates that receive the most votes in each SIG will be elected
Chair and Vice-Chair for a one-year term, renewable indefinitely.

We hope you will participate in electing our SIG leaders.

[MCN-L] Change in MCN Board Selection Process

Dear MCN community member:
For many years, MCN has held direct member elections for its Board of
Directors and President-Elect. In a professional community and membership
organization of relatively modest size, this has long posed challenges in
assembling a Board best able to serve the needs of MCN and the wider
community. Those challenges used to be manageable; but as the environment
within which MCN operates has evolved in recent years, they have become
more acute. In 2015, the Board determined that MCN can best serve and
engage its members in this present context by changing the selection
process from one involving direct elections to one based on Board
appointment. This strategic change in process will have two key kinds of
value:

   - It will manage the selection of MCN’s new Directors and
   President-Elect in a way that enables their skills, expertise, and
   knowledge to meet MCN’s needs more effectively.
   - It will create greater diversification of backgrounds and perspectives
   on the Board.

To serve these aims, the new process will engage all MCN members in key
ways, such as nominating themselves or continuing to help identify
prospective candidates for the Board. We are confident that this change
will enable MCN to provide more value to all MCN members. The new process
is described in detail in revised By-Laws <http://mcn.edu/about/governance/>
which were recently adopted by the Board. If you have any questions, we

are the steps for you to follow:

Result: Your acceptance to speak has been communicated to MCN. Hooray!

We will extend the acceptance date by a week, so you now have *until June
27, 2015* to let us know you will be presenting at the MCN 2015 Annual
Conference in Minneapolis November 4-7, 2015. If you have already emailed
us your acceptance, we have it noted down, but please check that any
co-presenters are correctly registered.

MCN's *Media Production SIG* brings you another *FREE* MCN Pro workshop:

*“Just Push Record: Video Recording Booths for Visitors”*

*Tuesday, March 17, 2015 - 2:00-3:00pm EST*

*What's it about?*
Have you thought about adding a video recording booth to your galleries?
Over the past ten years, booths have become popular for encouraging
visitors to record their own responses to museum experiences and have taken
a variety of forms in museum galleries across the country.

This one-hour workshop will explore a few different styles of video
recording booths and their application to the gallery experience. Styles
explored will include: permanent installations in the gallery, special
exhibition stations, and traveling project recording components. We will
discuss the pros and cons of implementation choices, some emerging trends
including social media integration, and tips on how to employ a booth for
your upcoming project, with lots of time for QA.

*Who Should Attend?*
Participants that would benefit from this workshop include those who work
in education, interpretation or social media, or museums interested in
community outreach and storytelling.

Proposals for MCN 2014 are now being accepted. The conference will take
place on Nov 19-22, 2014 in Dallas.
This year's theme, *Think Big, Start Small, Create*, captures the
motivation and collaborative spirit of our community and the institutions
we represent. Cultural heritage organizations are embracing transformative
change like never before and striving toward ambitious goals through small

[MCN-L] A message from Travis Fullerton of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

Hi everybody, I wanted to conduct a quick survey of video production
services in museums and try to understand how they are managed, and by
whom.

There is an increasing need for video content at our museum, especially for
social media, but also for education and mobile development. We try hard to
maintain a level of quality in our still imaging and I want to maintain a
level of quality control as the video content grows. Currently video
content it is being generated in various departments by contractors,
interns, or volunteers - and it is all over the place. I would like to get
a sense of how others manage multimedia production at your institutions. I
know there is a Media Production SIG, so I am particularly keen to hear
from those folks.

Is video production a unique department? If not, where does it fall?

Do you have dedicated staff for video production? Who? How many?

How is the finished content stored? DAMs? Hard copy? Do you save edited
projects only or all raw footage as well? Who manages the storage?

Just curious how others are handling this. Thanks!
