Re: MD: off topic- sound card to amp problems

2001-10-25 Thread J. Coon

You have a

GO to Home Depot or a good hardware store and get a plug in tester that
shows if a receptical in wired correctly. They have three prongs like a
plug and there are three neon lights. They cost about $15 or less. All
the do is show if the recptical is connected properly and has power.
Some will also test to see if a GFI works propely too.

Plug that into the two recepticals and you will find that one of them is
wired incorrectly. Before you make any changes in the wireing to
correct it, makes sure the power is off for the receptical you are
working on.

There are three wires connect to a three prong receptical.

Black is or should be the HOT wire, and it connects to the small flat
prong.

White is neutral and it connects to the large flat prong

Green or bare is Ground and it connects to the metal electrical box and
the round grounding prong.

It is possible that one of your extension cords is plugged in backwards
also.

Hopefully neither the reciever nor the computer has been damaged.
Usually it is just leakage current, but enough to activate the
protection circuitry involved.

soundcard to an input on my stereo reciever. it used to work fine, but
suddenly, the amp was shutting itself down, some kind of failsafe. it only
happened when the AUX is used, which is where the rca cables( 1/8 in.
minijack cable to rca's) from the card are plugged into.you can actually see
a spark jump from the jack to the soundcard input when you connect them. i
plugged in a protable cd walkman to the cables, and all worked fine, so i
dont think there are shorts in the rca cables. i believe its got to do with
 proper grounding of the units.
the reciever has a two prong, polarized plug. i ran a ground cable
fromn the chassis of the reciever to the chassis of my pc. touching the
ground cable to the PC chassis also causes a spark. with the two units
grounded together, the amp works, but the monitor display behaves funny, it
gets jiggly. i disconnected the ground and havent used the sound cars since.
i'm thinking of grounding both the pc and amp chassis to a cold water
pipe, which i guess would be the ultimate of grounds. if anyone has any
ideas about this , please let me know before i blow up the pc, the map, or
 both.

MD: Making 2 or 4 hours recordings

2001-10-03 Thread J. Coon

I think the cheapest way of getting long recordings like that is to run
the audio to a VCR and record on the audio track on that. I think you
can even set a program for it on the VCR.

After you have it recorded you can copy it back to your minidisc and
split it up.

I'd be interested in comparions of DAT with MD if anyone has experience.
How does taping compare ? Editing is not really an issue. I'm after the ability to

Now, the mic situation isn't completely solved. It seems a lot of people
are using ECM-MS907s. Looking at the specs and listening to recordings
made with similar mics, these don't offer good enough lower range
response (rated from 100Hz). It seems the 957s and 959s go down to 50Hz
which would be ideal. Any idea where I could find either of these for
cheap? They don't appear on eBay much.

It isn't the mike that overloads. THe R70 doesn't have a mike
sensitivity switch so the R70 overloads. You should still be able to

You have to bring up the volume control from the Start menu, not the

You will see the large version of the volume control. Click on OPTIONS
/ Properties/ recording and make sure the Line In and the Microphone
boxes are checked

Click OK and then check Line In or Microphone

Re: MD: Mic level for recording?

2001-08-29 Thread J. Coon

I am not familiar with the Sharp MD-MT15. Basicly you will have to set
the level control and fiddle with it a first to make sure you get a good
recording. Mainly error on the low side because if you get the level
too high, the recording will be distorted badly and be un useable, but
if it is recorded too low, you can usually turn up the volume on
playback and because of the large dynamic range of the MD media, you
will have a good recording anyway.

After you have done it a few times you sort of know about where to set
it initially from what you ended up with the last time you were in the
same situation.

Hope that helps and I am sorry no one attempted to answer your question
earlier.

Is this it?

I WANT YOU

No one ever said it was gonna be easy
A pain to tease me the barrier’s broken
Climbing aboard a white knuckle ride
That churns my insides the wheels are in
motion

  I want you
 Right now and forever

My mind is set harder and harder
No chance of defeat it’s not in my nature
   I’ve set a course you’re the receiver
I’m the retriever I’m out to get you

  I want you
 Right now and forever

Hi Shawn. That's probably the reason you can buy a mini system like the
 Sharp MD-C2 http://minidisc.org/part_Sharp_MD-C2.html, pay less than $200
(USD) and still get great MD copies. This is a self contained system, where
you don't even have the option of making analog copies of CDs.

I don't think that you can find these any more. But even if you gave the
speakers to your kid brother to use with is mini system and only used the C2
so that you could make 3 unattended MD copies from 3 CDs, it is worth it.

 Just my 2 cents,

MD: Getting MD output into an OEM Car CD player

2001-08-07 Thread J. Coon

I just changed cars, and my new one is an Olds Silhouette with a built
in CD/Am=FM stereo, complete with the radio controls on the steering
wheel.

With my old car, I just popped a cassette adaptor into it andlistened to
my MDs, and when I had to replace that, I got one of the Aiwa units
that has a jack for the MD player. Now however, I have an OEM CD unit
and no jack to connect my MD to. Has anyone had any good experiences
with getting their portable MD unit to play through a stock OEM CD
player? I tried one of those FM RF modulators several years back and it
didn't work too well. Have they improved any? Is there another way?

No, they have not, and in some areas (like around Boston, MA) they are
totally useless as the FM band is saturated.

Actually, I have to disagree. I have had the Sony RM-X69RF FM RF modulator
in my car in use with MDX-65 for a couple of years now and it works
flawlessly. I am in the Boston area and have no problem with drift or
interference from local radio stations. This device is different from the
cheapies you place on the passenger seat. It is wired into the antenna and
has plenty of power to override local radio stations. I have travelled to
other cities including NYC and Toronto and have never needed to change the
frequency that it is tuned to. Since, it comes in through FM it is
obviously limited by that, but in a car with engine and road noise the lack
of fidelity is not very important to me.

An MD recorder is for recording live sound, not just copying it off a

Here are some sites that have information on the LM1973 audio mixer
chip.

http://search.dogpile.com/texis/search?q=LM1973geo=nofs=web

Timothy Stockman wrote:

 |3. Adjust levels *before* the A/D to prevent overload while maximizing dynamic
 | range. Most modern MD recorders have fixed gain *berfore* the A/D; not a
 | good thing!

Absolutely. So you use the LM1973's you mentioned in a programmable gain
configuration, right? Are these parts quiet enough to work with
 microphone-level signals?

I was planning on using a topology that had the LM1973 in the *feedback* loop
of the microphone preamp stage. Therefore, it would get its drive from the output
of the mic preamp, after 40 dB or so of gain and attenuate it back to microphone
level before feeding it to the inverting input. They spec these chips at over 100 dB
S/N, and this configuration exploits the available S/N to the max, so my guess is
that it would be quite acceptable. This topology is what I was refering to when I
 was talking about channel trim.

The LM1973 contains three pots; I'd use the first one for level trim as described\
above, and the other two as conventional attenuators, one feeding the left
channel and one feeding the right. That would allow the controlling microprocessor
to emulate channel gain and pan, all the while maintaing an optimum gain
structure to maximize S/N while minimizing overload.

 you're well over
1/2 watt--roughly 20 hrs. with 3-4 AA cells-- is this what you have in mind
 for a portable MD system?

That would be great... I'd planned to use NiHM AA cells...

Also, I would think that some MD titling interface built into the mixer
might be a nice feature that would distinguish your mixer from anything else
 that's commercially available.

A great idea! I'd probably use an 8051 derivative (we've had great success
here at work with the Philips 87c552 in battery powered equiopment; it has
some nifty power-save and sleep modes). This CPU would probably have
enough resources left over to run a titling program.

Which model do you have, Jim? Certain Pioneer and Philips models can be
tricked; first you need to insert a taxed music blank of the same capacity
(74 or 80) and rewritability (R or RW). Then there might be a trick for
swapping in a data blank in such a way that the recorder remembes the value

Jim, I'm not sure what you are asking? music CDRs and data CDRs are
just a gimmick to charge more for the music CDRs.

Again, am I misunderstanding your question?

Because of the RIAA, my consumer grade stand alone CD burner will only
use audio CDR or CDRW. I got it from Monkey Wards when they went out of

The consenses is that the information is stamped on the CDR and can't be

the entire disc, but since these tracks were a compilation off
of LPs, it will take an afternoon of work to replace them

Sony could say that there are many ways to prevent inadvertant
erasure, but each of them involves it own kind of frustration.
One way to deal with the prolem is with the Hold switch, which
would be a good solution since I always use the remote EXCEPT
for one thing: pressing stop to charge the battery. (It complains
if hold is on.) The wriite protect tab is another possible solution,
but I get annoyed at getting protect messages from my home deck
when I DO want to change the disk.

The correct solutuion, which Sony FINALLY implemented, but not
soon enough to fix my recorder, is make the record start position
selectable. An even better solution would be to do what everyone
else does and just eliminate End Search entirely.

Sorry to rehash this old discussion thread. But I just had to do
something to lower my blood pressure after wiping out all that work.
I am generally a loyal Sony customer, but this type of thing makes
me want to throw the MZ-R70 in the trash!

MD: [Fwd: Digital Recording Experiment (Sorry, No Direct Mando Content)]

2001-06-26 Thread J. Coon

Here is some food for thought.

 Original Message
Subject: Digital Recording Experiment (Sorry, No Direct Mando Content)
Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 16:57:54 -0400
From: David Betts [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Consider this experiment:
GIVEN:
A (home) minidisk deck has a digital in and out, interfaced to a
computer
with Sound Blaster card and digital SPDIF connectors. That computer is
also
loaded with CoolEdit 2000 which has, among other neat features, the
ability
to generate a 1000 Hz square wave and save it as a WAV file. Imagine
this
file is then recorded (again via digital SPDIF) by the MD and then
played
back from the MD into the PC again.
TO FIND:
Should the send and the return .WAV files be identical, since the
process is digital thoughout? If not, why not?
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
To stimulate your thinking, please examine the actual results captured
as
screen grabs from directly out of CoolEdit:
The send file: http://www.hometown.aol.com/dbettsxx/Waves/send.jpg
The return file: http://www.hometown.aol.com/dbettsxx/Waves/return.jpg
Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Re: MD: home made mics

The mike is prety sensitive. In loud situations, you have to record
with a low mic sensitivity setting, or set the level manually. As with
any recording, watch the record level to make sure it isn't hitting the
peak and causing distortion.

Other than that you can't beat the price.

 useability/readability improvement.

Beware though, that this unit uses to have a problem that not

it before purchasing it, put a disc in, play it, turn it off cutting power
to it, power on again, eject the disc, reinsert it, etc. If the unit is ok
you only will get those disc error with normal use about a dozen times a

Pushing the reset button (you have to remove the faceplate and use

They should all be 3.6V. The more mAH the better. I think the original
was 1200 or 1300. The 1550 mAH would run the R30 twice as long as the

mAH BTW, stands for milliAmpereHours.

The replacements I managed to find states 3.6V/800mAH

Does the different mAH numbers affect performance?
And does anyone have suggestions for the best place to purchace the batteries.

Re: MD: Human interference?

Sounds to me like the problem isn't with the MD unit but your computer
and sound card.
I suspect that you don't have the third prong on the plug connected to
anything, or if you do what you have it connected to isn't wired
correctly. Someone may have not grounded the third prong and they may
have the hot and the neutral connections reversed. You can buy a device
for less than $10 at the hardware store and plug it into the outlet and
it will tell you if the plug is wired the correct way.

when a recording made in the R50 is played in another machine.

Ok, so the manufacturer writes hello on one instead of me doing it. The
result is they are physically different even though they are made of the
same material.

There are sites that have information on hacks to different pieces of
equipment to make them do things they weren't supposed to do. There
might be such a site for stand alone CD recorders.

Right, but your analogy is flawed in that data CD-R and audio CD-R are not
identical pieces of paper to start with, before you write "hello" on one of
them. A closer analogy would be a data CD-R is a piece of white typing
paper while an audio CD-R is a blank piece of music sheet.

No, it doesn't. On a Sharp portable, which has automatic end searching,
  you
can do the exact same thing; just insert a full disc, press PAUSE to make
  it
pause at the start of the prewritten track 1, and then go into record. It
will overwrite just the same as a Sony portable does if you don't press
  its

Re: MD: Beginning at the beginning....

2001-03-05 Thread J. Coon

Sharon,
here is the mike I designed to allow me to record jams at places like
Evart, Paint Creek, etc.
http://www.tir.com/~liteways/Mandolin.html#Microphone It is pretty handy
and cost about $10 to build it. No cords, no muss no fuss, just plug it
in and record the jam session. At the Paint Creek Tinwhistle, I started
recording with it and set it up on a ledge so it would be away from the
crowd noise.

I haven't messed with plugging into the sound board, but it should work,
just watch the levels so you don't overdrive it. The same goes for
using a mike, you need to watch the levels and error on the low side.
These things have a wide dynamic range, and no tape hiss, so if it is
recorded too low, you can usually bring the level back up with no
problems. However, if you overdrive the unit, it will clip the signal
and it will be very distorted and you can't correct it. It is best to
try some run throughs to make sure you get good results. (It is hard to
play and record at the same time, but once you've done it, you don't
have to do much except make sure the mike is plugged into the correct
jack, (I plugged it in the wrong one once when I was in a hurry and
didn't get anything.)

PARAMOUNT TO EVERYTHING ALWAYS PRESS "END SEARCH" BEFORE YOU RECORD
ANYTHING. If you don't do that every time, you will record something
and someone will want to hear how it sounds. So, you play one of the
tracks back. They listen to part of it and marvel at the clarity of the
recording and hand it back to you. Now you go to record the next tune,
and you press record BINGO, you just wiped out everything you
recorded after the point that you listened too. I don't know why Sony
was so FOOLISH as to set up their portable recorders that way. Someone
at Sony should be taken out and shot... or at least severely
chastised. Other than that, it looks like you have a good handle on
things.

act for a concert. (We will be playing with another couple on
hammered dulcimer, guitar, autoharp, and a wonderful vocals.)

This Thursday we bought a Sony MZ-R70PC MD. We have lots of sound
equipment and mics and we're hoping to use two mic systems fed into
the 1/8 inch input into the Sony to create a minidisc or use a feed
off our mixer into the minidisc recorder. We'd then like to transfer
the minidisc recording to a CD using CoolEdit 2000. (Which we've
been trying out and we're ready to purchase.)

We don't have much time to learn what we need to know, but maybe you
can help us with the basics so we can accomplish what we want to do.

We have lots of computer space (about 50 gigs) so we can store the
file to the hard drive before transferring it to the CD (and, yes, we
have a cd burner -- in fact two).

Is there anything we need that we don't have?

We will have to do our own engineering while we're playing, so it has
to be a simple no frills set-up. (We can probably get someone to
"turn us on and off" but nothing more.)

Hey, if anyone is in Central Michigan and wants to give us a hand,
 we'd welcome them

We're totally illiterate when it comes to digital and analog. I just
know I want to be able to create a CD which I can give to friends and
 family.

Can anyone give us any pointers?

If it is like all the other Sony units I've had, you plug in the remote,
and the head phones unplug from the remote and you plug the new head
phones in where the Sony haed phones went. One caveat though, the older
Sonys used a proprietary headphone jack so Ihad to get an adaptor from
MiniDisc Now.

it in to the md player. Normally this means that I will not be able to
use my remote because the 'remote plug' and the headphone jack are put
in 1 plug. My question is if it's possible to chop my headphone jack
from the remote plug, so that I can insert my airhead connector directly
 into the md player.

I want to connect a miniplug to my unit (not the remote). And I want to connect my
remote
to the unit. I will not use the headphone jack in my remote, only on the unit
itself. My
remote connector is combined with a headphone jack, which goes to the remote as
well. I
want to remove the headphone jack from the remote connector, so I can plug a seperate
 minijack into my unit.
So a Y connector will not work, because I only need 1 headphone port.

  Niels explained,

  | The problem of the Y connector is, that when I put the y adaptor in it, I
  | will not be able to put my remote control connector in the md player,

I don't follow. If the line/headphone output jack on the unit and the
headphone port on the remote are both 3.5mm stereo minijacks, why would a
Y-connector not work? How does the headphone jack on the remote prevent
  use of a Y-adaptor?

Radio Shack or even Best Buy and Circuit City, so I'd expect Niels to find
one without difficulty in the Netherlands.

Whether the output from the E900 would behhave as a headphone-out or a line-
out if you use a Y-adaptor and put the remote on one side and these head-
phones on the other I cannot guess, but it would certainly solve the problem
of having the remote's weight in the middle of the cord from the headphones
 to the unit.

I must be missing something here; the Y-adaptor is such an obvious solution,
yet nobody else has suggested it yet. Is there some reason it wouldn't help?

What make you think this is a threat to MD? MD reaches further than to
just swipping music from commercial CDs. You can't cart that CD

it.

Nope, CD copiers are only for one segment of the population.

People are just trying to talk about the pros and cons of minidisc vrs.
other recording media. That is what this list as all about IMHO, to
pose questions and get discussion on them. If yoiu are having trouble
with such a larg amount of email, you should set up filters and filter
all of the MD email intoa separate folder automatically. Then you can
sort that folder by subject matter and all the email for a subject will
be together and if you want to read it, you can read everything on the
topic at once. If you don't want to read it, you can highlight all of
them and delete them all at once.

Now, I realize that this doesn't work on all platforms, but it works on
most of them.

Re: MD: recovering deleted TOC

2001-02-16 Thread J. Coon

When you delete something, it's reference to it in the TOC is erased.
The data is still there unless you start recording over it. If the data
itwelf were to be erased, it would take longer to erase it than it does,
considering the MD records in what seems to be real time or on some
units 4x. In any case it would take several minutes to erase a full 74,
80 149, or 160 minute disc, but it doesn't. if you record something and
like a friend f mine did, took the batteries out before it was done, the
TOC isn't written but the data was. I was able to recover it for him on
my Sony 520 deck.

Matthew Bullis wrote:

How do you know the data is still present? In my MZ-R70 manual, it says that

IBM put it together and got the DOS operating system from Bill Gates.
They didn't buy the whole DOS program and Billy Boy, decided to sell it
to compeditors too, since Big Blue didn't have an exclusive license to
use his software.

Jim the "PC" that IBM "invented" was a worthless piece of sh!t. All they
did was throw together a bunch of off the shelf parts. The system did
nothing. Along comes Bill Gates and partner.

Now IBM thinks that the value of the PC in next to zero. Just a joke side
project that they really don't even see a future in. So they don't even
design their own operating system. They don't even buy an operating system
 (like Gates did).

They license the system from Gates and his partner. They don't even get an
exclusive right to the license. Gates turns around and starts licensing
anyone who will pay him for "DOS".

Funny thing. People start taking an interest in the "PC". Since IBM has
no exclusive rights to the "PC", companies start putting together PCs in
their garage. They have zero over head and can sell the PC for a fraction
of what IBM has to sell it for.

It is truly a credit to programers and electronics engineers that they have
been able to reverse engineer the PC so that it is capable of doing all of
the things that it can do today.

And where is Big Blue today? a comfortable capitalization of 202 hundred
 mil. Microsoft? 311 hundred mil.

So, how does it sound? That is really the crux of the matter.

 I see it this way:

The lossiness of ATRAC is not orthogonal to the lossiness of MP3 encoding.
If a song was on a CD but you have it as a 10:1 .mp3 file, and you play the
.mp3 file as input to MD, the resulting MD track is 1/5, not 1/50, the size
of the original CD track. There is a lot of extrapolation in decoding the
.mp3 file into S/PDIF or into analog output, and, because of overlap in the
algorithms, a disproportionate part of what ATRAC discards comes from the
extrapolation rather than from the retained data.

For the 510, the answer is yes, that and the turn on bug which may be
related. I took my 510 in for service 3 times and each time it came
back worse than it went in. I say trash it or sell it on ebay as a
nonworking unit. Some tinkerers may pay you $10 or $20 buck to play
with it. In all fairness, be sure to make it known what is wrong with
the unit and that you pried it open with a screwdriver.

There used to be some links on the md community pages that showed
attemps to fix the unit. I am not sure how successfull they were.

You are better off getting a new unit, not another 510.

Re: MD: Carver Fire

2001-01-30 Thread J. Coon

That is the way it works in conventional physics. That is how a hot air
balloon rises, it is part of what makes the wind blow. However, in the
field of audiophidialia, things are reversed. Usually based on the
latest issue of some magazine. That is why you can easily tell the
difference between different brands of minidisc blanks. The more
expensive ones always sound the best.

So put away your intellect, what you were taught in elementary school,
high school physics and even what you learned at an institution of
higher learning. What the heck do the learned professors know any way?
Just go visit you local audio store and swallow the hook line and sinker
the salesman has for you and remember that "He has a HIGH SCHOOL
diploma",... and he gets a commission.
